Journal entry by Leigh Ann Davison

Most of you probably know that tomorrow marks 80 years since William Thurston Atwood was born in Gorman, TX.  He is not in a very celebratory mood these days as he has not been able to successfully renew his drivers license yet.  Tomorrow he will attempt to accomplish this feat, and if he does not pass the test his current license will expire (nothing like waiting until the very last possible minute!).  Whether or not he can attempt to renew it at a later date or whether it will be permanently revoked remains to be seen.  I am not so familiar with DMV laws and regulations in the state of Texas that I would know the answer and if any one of you out there does know please chime in with a comment and fill us all in.  Inquiring minds want to know!  I just have not had the where-with-all to put in the research.  Thank you in advance to anyone who can share.

Of course, if Dad is unable to drive his entire life will drastically change.  But Vera and Glen, the palliative care team, can guide us safely down the path of transition and help arrange for meal delivery service, transportation to and from doctors appointments, accessibility to medication, housekeeping and laundry services, etc.  As things develop and change over the next few weeks (assuming he does not, in fact, get his license renewed) I will keep you informed.

Although I have not yet booked my ticket to return to Texas I expect I will be back the last week or two in October to check on Dad and make sure he is managing well.

Until next time, I bid you all adieu!

Love,
Leigh Ann
