Barb’s Story

Site created on February 9, 2020

Our mom experienced a long period of time with a significantly low blood glucose level, to the point where brain damage has occurred. She was found on Friday, February 7th around 11am unconscious. The first blood glucose reading from the paramedics was 20. She was transported to mercy hospital via ambulance, and was given dextrose to increase her blood sugar. There was no return of consciousness. She was intubated, so that the machine could deliver optimal and efficient breaths. In the emergency department they did a head CT. The head CT showed significant injury to the brain. A toxic metabolic stroke. It was determined that she is in fact, in a coma. Neurological concerns are monitored by completing a neuro exam to test the function of brain stem reflexes. When she arrived to the ICU, she was not exhibiting any reflexes, whether or not she was on sedative medication. She had extensive brain swelling and cerebral edema. Medications were started to increase her blood sugar, increase cardiac output and to keep more fluid/swelling from occurring on/around her brain. A tube feeding was started to provide nourishment and to help keep her blood sugars up.

It is now Sunday, February 9th at 2pm and we haven’t received many updates which is to be expected. The sedation that was started to keep her comfortable was stopped prior to the neuro exam for the day so that the neurologist could have a clear picture of her neurological function this morning. There was an MRI completed which showed a more clear picture of significant injury to the brain. Today she started moving in response to pain, has opened her eyelids a couple times, and moves her toes when feet are touched. These three assessment findings indicate a little improvement. At this time, the plan is to continue to monitor to see what happens over the next 3-7 days before a prognosis can be provided. Her blood sugars are finally able to stay within a normal range as of 11pm last night, so the treatment now includes a regular insulin drip to keep that level stable.

Any prayers, and positive vibes are welcome. The plan is to take it one day at a time and see what happens. Please refer to this page directly for any updates. Our whole hearts are invested in our moms wellbeing and we are striving to exude peace/love for this woman when we are in her presence, so that we can offer the optimal level of support for her. We ask that you do/pray for the same.

Thank you.
