Barbi’s Story

Site created on March 16, 2023

Hello everyone! Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. I am starting this on my moms behalf, Barbi Walker who was recently diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Her journey started on 2/2/23. She has an amazing care team working with her every week at KU Medical Cancer Center. She started chemotherapy on 3/2/23, going every Thursday for treatment for 24 weeks. After chemotherapy she will have a mastectomy surgery with a 4–6 week recovery period, followed by 6 weeks of radiation. She will have radiation treatment everyday for 6 full weeks. It’s going to be a long road ahead this year that no one expected for my mom, but we will be supporting her 100% of the way through it all. I already know how much she is loved and supported by all of you who have lifted her up in prayer, personal messages, and daily thoughts and will continue doing so until the end. It truly does make a difference during this process.

With that, I do ask for everyone that feels led to send uplifting messages to my mom every Thursday, so she can read through them during her chemotherapy. She is not allowed to have any visitors with her during the chemotherapy sessions and sometimes they can last 6 hours long. Being able to read inspirational quotes, see funny memes, or receiving any type of message via text, etc. is going to make all the difference to keep her spirits as high as possible during her sessions.

Please feel free to mail her a card, a simple handwritten letter, or even sending a quick text as she will love reading each and everyone. I want my mom to be showered with cards, letters, messages, etc, as she battles through this challenging year.
Her address is: 1006 W Cox School Rd, Odessa, MO 64076.
(Please try to spread it out as she will be fighting until likely January of 2024.)

For those of you that know my mom, you know she is not one to ask for help, but is always the first person to give it. I’ve created a GoFundMe account to help her with medical bills, meals, gas, and all of the additional expenses that will come with this new journey of hers over this next year. I want to put this out there for those that feel led to donate in this kind of way. I know my mom isn’t going to ask for anything from anyone, but I know she’ll accept the help especially when she sees how many people love her and want to help her through this. https://gofund.me/7d7b4682

Sometime in October during National Breast Cancer awareness month, we plan to have an open house to throw a “Pink Party” where you can come out and paint a rock/write a card filled with words of encouragement for a cancer patient. My mom received a “Battle Bag” from KU after her 1st round of chemotherapy and it was filled with different donation gifts from survivors. This gave her a sense of hope as well as the idea of starting to paint rocks and to write encouraging cards to give to other breast cancer patients in their own personal battle bag she will be donating to KU starting now as well as those we collect during the October event. Details will be posted once we get closer to October. My mom has always reminded me growing up that some of the most important attributes to life were being kind and compassionate to others no matter what, as you never know what they are truly going through. She enjoys helping others and now it’s her turn to receive the help. We can’t thank you enough for all the prayers and well wishes my mom has already received so far and all of those to come. Love is a powerful thing. Let’s continue to shower my mom with love this year! My mom is so strong and a fighter and will be even stronger once she beats this cancer. I will try to give updates on this website as much as possible. 💗

Journal entry by Jordan Huffman

Today is the end of a long and hard journey for my mom. She finished her last and final round of preventative chemo treatments today! She got to ring her last bell for good and forever!🔔 We are closing this chapter and moving onto the next one! I’m so thankful she came out on top of this breast cancer and won. She is the definition of a warrior. She is truly unstoppable with understanding all that she had gone through this past year and seeing her overcome everything. She has been so strong and has remained so positive. I couldn’t be more proud of her. She’s been such an inspiration to me. She is a bright light in my life and I’m so glad I have her by my side. I finally get to retire the bracelet I’ve worn ever since the day we found out the diagnoses. This is a really good feeling and allows for a big sigh of relief for us all that have loved and supported her each step of the way to see and come to this exact day. You did it mom! I love you!! Cancer can kick rocks! 🩷🩷🩷
