Hayes’s Story

Site created on November 14, 2023

Hello Everyone!

First off, we want to thank you so much for the outpouring of prayers, love, and support. We are so excited to welcome our third child into our family in a few short months. As you likely know, it was discovered that our Baby has severe heart outflow defects that will require open heart surgeries after birth.

For those that have a medical background or want to learn more about it, our child has Double Outlet Right Ventricle (or "DORV"), transposition of the great arteries, ventricular septal defect (or "VSD"), and severe coarctation (or "COA").

These challenges were discovered a little over a month ago on our 20 week ultrasound, and we have since spent time in the Children's Minneapolis hospital system digging in and learning about the best course of treatment for our little one! Our last visit was yesterday, 11/13, where it was discovered that our baby's aortic valve has grown in relation to the rest of the baby's heart and body, which was a MASSIVE answer to our prayers. We, and the cardiology team, are hopeful that with the growth of the aortic valve that our baby can have a 2 ventricle repair. We would love continued prayers for continued aortic valve growth and strong function of all valves.

It is very likely that we will not know the entire course of surgery until after our baby is born and they can do more detailed imaging. We know we have one of the best medical teams in the world to support our little one's needs, and while we are anxious to begin the best treatment, we know we are in HIS HANDS and are grateful for the outpouring of love and support. We plan to leverage this site to share updates in one place. Please feel free to share with anyone you'd like.

"The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" -Joshua 1:9

With lots of love,

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kevyn P

Our beautiful baby boy, Hayes Joseph Pien, was born on February 19th and went to heaven on Thursday, March 28th. He was a warrior and fought each day as he attempted to recover from two open heart surgeries. We are so grateful for every moment we had with Hayes, the opportunity our family had to support him in his battle, and we will continue to love him unconditionally forever.

While we are deeply saddened to not have had the opportunity to bring Hayes home and see him grow up, we rest knowing he is sitting on our Heavenly Father’s lap fully restored! As our wonderful pastor reminded us, being away from Hayes will feel like a blink of an eye to him but will feel like an eternity for us, until we see him again and truly get the opportunity to understand what eternity really is. We are further reminded during this Easter season, that Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice guarantees the opportunity for our family to see our little warrior again as well as for everyone who believes in Him.

We are going to have a big celebration of life for Hayes on Saturday, April 6th at our church, Bethel Lutheran - Highlands Campus, in Hudson, WI.

504 Frontage Road, Hudson, WI 54016

9 AM - 10 AM Family Only
10 AM - 11 AM Visitation for All
11 AM Service Begins

We ask those that plan to attend to please wear something colorful, as we celebrate Hayes’ life and story. For anyone that cannot attend, please feel free to join virtually, as it will be live streamed via “Bethel Lutheran Church Hudson” Facebook page.

Our family is so proud of our loving “Hazy Boy,” and we will work our whole lives to honor his name, his place in our family, and his impact on people all over the world. We are in the process of starting a foundation in Hayes’ honor to support families that have children with congenital heart defects and other challenges. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the foundation via Venmo @RPien, which will be transferred directly into his foundation once established in the weeks to come. Please include Hayes’ name under the “what’s this for?” section. Additionally, if you would like to send a check, please include Hayes’ name on the memo line.Checks can be mailed to:

271 Turnberry Court, Hudson, WI 54016

To celebrate Hayes’ life (and from first hand experience), the first goal for our foundation will be to provide 15 new beds for the 15 rooms in the Ronald McDonald House at the Children’s Minneapolis campus. We will continue to provide updates about our new foundation and its goals in the near future.

Thank you all for being a part of our family’s journey. We love you all and ask you to carry a piece of our brave little warrior with you wherever you go, spreading Jesus’ love.

With faith, hope and love,

Rob, Kevyn, Cece, Ezra and heaven’s newest warrior Hayes
