Henry’s Story

Family and Friends,

Wesley, Kyle and I wanted to take the time to share with you about our life the past two weeks. As you know, we are expecting a 'Little' one to join our family around August 5th!

At our 20 week ultrasound, we were unable to get all the necessary pictures of the baby! Already, just like their Big Brother! After a few ultrasounds, our Doctor called to inform us that our Baby's right ventricle was smaller than the left ventricle. With this, we were referred to Fargo to see a Pediatric Cardiologist. We met with Dr. Horner on June 19th. We had a Fetal Echo Cardiogram done, then consulted with Dr. Horner.  Dr. Horner informed us of our Baby's heart condition - Pulmonary Atresia. In Pulmonary Atresia, the valve that lets blood out of the heart to go to the baby's lungs (pulmonary valve) does not form correctly. Along with this diagnosis, Dr. Horner informed us our Baby would have a series of 3 surgeries over the course of 3 years. With 2 of the surgeries being within 6 months of birth - one within hours of birth. As you can imagine, this came as a shock to us all. Dr. Horner suggested we continue our care at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Fast forward a week, and we are headed down to Mayo to meet with a variety of doctors there. Kyle is amazed by how big this campus is. On June 27th, we had another Fetal Echo Cardiogram done - just do not ask Emilee how that went for her! 😂 We had a consultation with another Pediatric Cardiologist who was able to show us through the Echo Cardiogram exactly what the concern is for the baby. He was able to give us a few more answers in regards to how common, and what the success rate is, etc. On June 28th, we had an ultrasound done in the morning. The ultrasound tech showed us all the hair the Baby has, as well as informed us the baby is 5lbs 14 ounces. Baby might just be bigger than Big Brother! We met with Dr. Davies who will be my OBGYN while I am there. His hope is to have me relocate to Rochester around 36 weeks, we are currently 35 weeks. Emilee will hopefully hear from a Social Worker from Mayo to see if she will be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald house. Dr. Davies set an induction date of July 30th. We were able to meet with Dr. Asay, whose medical team with be the Baby's primary care doctor. He explained more to us about what will happen after Baby is delivered. Unfortunately, Baby will be delivered in one building, then taken a mile away for surgery and recovery. Kyle will be able to go with Baby while Emilee recovers and is reunited as soon as possible.

Overall, we feel a sense of relief after meeting with the staff at Mayo! Everyone was extremely nice and shared their compassion to our situation and continually reassured us that this may be new to us, it is not new to them.

We will return to Mayo on Tuesday, July 3rd to meet with the Cardio Surgeon. After this, we will wait to see when Emilee is able to relocate down to Rochester.

We want to THANK those who have sent their thoughts, well wishes, and prayers! We are so THANKFUL to have a great support system!

Journal entry by Emilee Little

Goodbye Summer. Hello Fall. We are officially in the full swing of ALL the Little Boys' FAVORITE season! Duck Hunting and Bow Hunting have consumed our weekends, as well as truck drives for grouse.

Henry had a pretty boring summer being stuck home with an adult every day for most of the summer. By the time we were comfortable with how he was healing, Henry was begging to go back to daycare with his friends. Bless his daycare provider. When Henry went back to daycare in August, he was still on his low-fat diet. She worked with us and Henry providing him meals for his low-fat diet, while monitoring to protein, etc in his diet.

We met with Dr. Horner at the beginning of August. Henry had a full work-up on this day - EKG, Echocardiogram, Chest X-Ray. All of his tests looked good. Dr. Horner encouraged us to slowly re-introduce higher fat foods. We made the decision to allow lunch to be his 'free meal' where he got to eat the same as his friends at daycare. Kyle and I still managed his low-fat diet at home for a few weeks. We slowly began to wean Henry off his diuretics or as Henry says his "pee medicine." While weaning Henry off of his meds, we were monitoring him for excessive weight gain, as well as a protruding belly - which would be signs of his lungs filling with fluid. We slowly diminished his low-fat diet, He began to eat all the foods he loves again! At the beginning of September, we were finished with his diuretics, and had an x-ray scheduled for a final view of his lungs. Dr. Horner informed us that the x-ray looked GREAT and Henry could carry on as he was. However, if we feel like there is an issue, we are encouraged to get him in for an x-ray.

Henry has been feeling great! Throughout the summer, we often heard "he looks great" or “never guessed he just had his third heart surgery.” And just like that, summer was over and Henry started Kindergarten. Kyle and I were anxious about that first day as we remembered how last year went. Boy, were mornings a struggle for all of us. We are now 20+ days into the school year. Henry has been adjusting well. We are grateful for his teacher who has taken the time to accommodate Henry's anxiousness. Thankfully, at this point, there is no need for any physical accommodations for Henry when it comes to phy ed or recess. Dr. Horner just mentioned how we should allow him breaks in those times of physical strain but continue to encourage him to be a normal 5 year old boy. At this time, Henry will be able to stay as physically active as his peers. As the years go by, his ability to stay physically caught up with his peers will begin to lag behind.

As is the case for many children with medical conditions, throughout the past few months, we have been helping Henry with his needs outside of the medical realm. We are Henry's biggest advocates when it comes to what he needs to be successful. This journey has been full of appointments and honest conversations but in the end, it is what is best for Henry.

We are truly grateful for those who hold us in their hearts! We are blessed with the greatest support system from Henry's Heroes.
