Journal entry by Whitney Kolbe

Charlie had his first cardiology check up since post op today. I went in a bit nervous- as he grows you just never know what they could say, he has been gaining weight and length good and generally is a laid back kiddo, but you just never know what’s happening in the heart. He is also fighting his first cold and got on some meds to hopefully help kick the drainage and mucus. This appointment consisted of an X-ray and echo. He did great during the X-ray and all looks awesome she said! The echo he wasn’t so fond of and we could only keep him so entertained before he let the gal know how he felt about it 🤣 this too he passed with flying colors. His VSD is continuing to close the remaining part that wasn’t fully patched during surgery and his pressures in his arteries are looking even better than they were post op. He had no wires to close his chest so other than the scar you would have no idea he had surgery at all. She said he looks great and is doing so well we don’t have to be seen again until he is 12 months. I about cried at this news out of pure relief! I went into this diagnoses thinking the worst if I’m being completely honest and little Charlie has continued to beat the odds. What we thought would be appts every few months during his first year or two is now tamed way down. He continues to prove to us what a strong little boy he is with the heart of a fighter.
This week it was also announced by the American Heart Association of Iowa that Charlie will be this years Heart Walk Ambassador! He will get to lead off the walk and we will be sharing his story in the coming months to help spread awareness about CHD.
We continue to be overwhelmed with gratitude for our family, friends, coworkers and network in general for the support and cheers.
I also tackled solo parenting for 4 days/3 nights this week and I’m even more thankful for Dave 🤣 in all seriousness the boys were great and it was good bonding time for Chase and I. He is still adjusting to being a big brother and some set backs of behavior after his world was turned upside down. He is doing great at learning his way through it though. We are trying to give him daddy and mommy date days so he feels special too since this year has been mostly about Charlie. He is an important part of Charlie’s life and growth and loves to do tummy time with him and make him laugh. Their bond already warms my heart. Another milestone down! ❤️👶❤️

Charlie’s scar- you can hardly see the spot the chest tubes were and doc said it will be a small
White line probably by the time he is 5.
