Koen’s Story

Site created on August 8, 2018

Baby Anderson has arrived! He decided to arrive about 6 weeks early, but entered the world at 8:16PM on August 8th, 2018. At birth he weighed 4 pounds 4 ounces and is 18 inches long.

We have been anticipating his arrival, but did not expect it to be so sudden. Today, August 8th, Kelsi went to the University of Minnesota Hospital with severe preeclampsia, which is high blood pressure caused by pregnancy. Doctors were able to stabilize her blood pressure, but to ensure Kelsi's health and wear on her kidneys and liver, they decided to begin inducing her today. Later in the evening, the baby's heart rate began to drop and Kelsi was taken in for an emergency c section. Kelsi  is doing well and is beginning her recovery. Baby boys's vitals all looked great and he is breathing on his own. The nurses even said he was crying before he could even be fully delivered. Baby's arrival was very sudden and unexpected, but there is much more to this little babe's story.

During Kelsi's pregnancy, they became aware that there was a blockage in baby's intestine, in the duodenum. This caused amniotic fluid to build to excess amounts, which caused kelsi grow larger, made breathing more difficult  and caused a spike in her blood pressure. Their prenatal care has been at the University of Minnesota, where Kelsi was getting 1-2 ultrasounds per week to make sure Baby was growing and developing at the correct pace. Once their care had switched to the U, Kelsi and Joe met with surgeons to discuss how Baby's arrival would look.  The plan was to induce Kelsi on August 29th which would have been 37 weeks. Once he was born, Kelsi and Joe would get about 30 minutes to spend with Baby until he is taken to the NICU to undergo tests and get a better look at the obstruction in his intestine. Surgery was planned for the day after Baby was born. After surgery, Baby will staying in the NICU from 10 days up to 6 weeks. The duration of the stay largely depends on how well he is digesting  milk and if he no longer needs a feeding tube.

Baby boy Anderson needs yours prayers as he undergoes surgery. Keep him, Kelsi and Joe in your thoughts and prayers as the days and weeks progress.

Koen is 6 weeks old today! It is also our due date, so he is now 40 weeks gestation! The three of us are doing well at home. It has been an adjustment and challenging at times, there is certainly a learning curve in being first time parents! We are enjoying the family time together but the days are flying by way too fast. Our little Koen continues to be a champ at eating. He weighed in at 6 pounds 10 ounces today! Such a big boy!

We took our first walk yesterday and both dogs joined us. It was fun to get out of the house and enjoy the cool fall weather. We're looking forward to spending more time bonding as a family and watching our little guy grow!

Thank you to everyone who continues to keep our little man in your thoughts and prayers! God has blessed us with Koen's successful surgery and recovery. He has a lot of growing and developing yet to do, but we know he'll do great!
