Journal entry by Steph Discher

Happy 1st Day of September!!! Nine months into this roller coaster, would’ve never thought for a second that previous to this, would this ever be in my family’s future.

I was able to go see Mama the other weekend, it was definitely a lot of emotions happening, best feeling ever just being able to hug her.  Her Doc and the Endocrinologist are working on a plan to wake up Mom’s adrenal glands that are taking a catnap from her steroids, they produce cortisol in which gives us energy. Mama’s been very fatigued and weak but the steroids are what is keeping Mom’s “graft vs host” at bay, but need to lower the rest of the steroid she’s on to work with the new meds to wake up her adrenal glands.

Message from Dad today…Mom had a better morning, but is exhausted now already, she is getting her magnesium right now, she is out like a light. Doc said that he still feels good with her, he said that she had a very very serious type of AML with the type of very serious cancerous blood disorders that went with her AML, plus she had really bad Graft versus Host disease. He told us today that he still feels good about this yet. It will take a long time to recover. He said that out of 10 patients, 6 patients will get this disease, two of these patients will not make it, two of these patients will mildly be affected, two patients will be moderately affected. He said that with Mom, for as bad as her AML was, with her other rare cancerous blood disorders, that he still feels that mom has a good chance of beating this disease and coming home. The next two to three weeks will tell a lot as they start to take her off of some of the steroids and immunesuppressant medication, and see how her Graft versus Host disease reacts. Tommorow she goes down to 1.5 mg daily instead of two mg daily of Tacrolimius , and discontining her Bunsiduin steroid for her stomach. Also he is going to put her on a medication to promote blood cell growth. Her Hemoglobin to as at 8.8 this morning, and she did have a little better morning, but she is totally drained right now.

With extra faith and prayers for this to keep going in the right direction Mama has a return home date middle/end of this month give or take.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the continued prayers, encouraging words, meals, food, and goods,  friends and family have sent with us to give Mom and Dad, they are grateful and feel truly blessed.
