Journal entry by Sherri Derr —
My 4 1/2 month old grandson Avery was brought into the Emergency Room on Mother's Day. He was struggling to breathe, was limp and could not eat or swallow. His condition worsened throughout the night and he was placed in the PICU at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk VA. He was intubated and a feeding tube was given a feeding tube. On Tuesday May 15 he was diagnosed with Infant Botulism. He needed a special medication that had to be flown in. It was critical that he received the medicine within a small time frame. The medication arrived in less than a day and this was administered to him. We were told that he will be in the hospital for up to 2 months as his body recovers. He has had some ups and downs over the past week but we thank God everyday that it was caught in time.
