Audra’s Story

Site created on January 4, 2021

In October, my mom was dropping me off at school, and we were waiting for my dad to pull out of the driveway behind us, and we continued to rear-end my own dad's car, it was a laugh/cry situation, and that morning I was told my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. So here is my mom's story; In September and October, my mom went in for a couple of tests, and her tests came back positive for breast cancer, and she has had three surgeries in the past three months. She will start to have chemo and radiation coming soon. She has a great support system, and meals have and are being delivered. She is a fighter, and we do not doubt that we can beat this. Here is where we will give updates and keep everyone up to date.

Journal entry by Audra Shaneman

Too long since an update.
Going through piles of stuff that accumulated during my journey, I came across pictures from Survivor Fitness at Crossfit classes. I was bald. BALD!!! I cried. Again.

I’m told these things are called triggers, as they trigger or remind us of painful or difficult times. I’m choosing to not let triggers be only negative. The women I met during that time were sincere, funny, strong and kind. I was bald. I WAS bald. Notice the past tense. By the grace of God I am sporting a headful of hair, and Olivia Colman from The Crown is my inspiration.

The journey has been long… I’m doing so well…but triggers happen.  So grateful for the people who give me perspective…

When you unpack after a vacation, you live again those memories. Similar to cleaning up after cancer, but you have to choose to see them in a more positive light.
