Newest Update

Journal entry by Ashley Marriott Borniger

What a whirlwind month!  I have almost entirely recovered from surgery, minus a sore spot on my arm which is to be expected after lymph nodes have been removed.  My surgeon says I look great and don't have to see her again until my follow-up mammogram in September!  My oncologist had wonderful news that the CANCER IS GONE, but I still have to continue on with radiation and immunotherapy because studies don't have a good indication on what would happen if I stopped early.  I meet with my radiologist this coming Wednesday to get a game plan and I also go in for my next round of immunotherapy that same day.  Radiation will be every day for 4-6 weeks (ugh!) and immunotherapy will continue through the end of July.  My hair is starting to slowly return and so far it looks to be dark brown (although my eyebrows look black ?!) so I'll be curious to see what it looks like as it continues to grow out.  Some people have their hair grow back in a different color or texture; any guesses out there?  In addition, I'm meeting with a physical therapist and occupational therapist to help me get my strength back so I can work out and continue this road to recovery.

I returned to work a couple weeks ago, was all set to get my updated vaccinations yesterday now that I'm feeling back to normal, and I was unfortunately struck down with COVID this past Tuesday.  This stuff is no joke and definitely felt like I got hit by a truck.  Luckily, this happened post-chemo or the symptoms could have been way, way worse.  The oncologist on-call was also able to prescribe Paxlovid, which has sped up the ickiness and I can break out of quarantining away from the family tomorrow.  Shout out once again to Chris Borniger, super dad and super husband, for holding down the fort and keeping the kids fed and occupied for most of the month of January and now into February.  And another shout out to my mom, who has been helping with school pick-ups, chauffeuring Elena to dance, and taking the kiddos out to dinner the other night so Chris could have a break.  Love my tribe and couldn't do this without you!

Thanks again for the prayers and check-ins.  Everything is much appreciated and I feel the love.
