Journal

Last week Arni and I were thankful to have some time away at Mt Martha. Whilst we were able to enjoy a few days of walks, coffee shops, good food, reading and just relaxing, this time was not without its challenges. A few days before we left for Mt Martha Arni was admitted to hospital with severe headaches and nausea. As Arni felt a bit better over the next few days, we decided to still head off for our trip. Unfortunately, on the first night we arrived at Mt Martha, Arni became unwell. We are thankful that he, again, picked up and we were able to enjoy the last few days of our trip.

There is something deeply therapeutic for the soul when one is by the seaside. Being in fresh air and nature, and being present to the feeling of the wind and the warmth of the sun, does bring about a sense of peace and reflection. It is easy to get caught up in the daily activities of being a patient, or a caregiver, and so slowing down and reflecting, and just feeling (the many wide-ranging feelings at the moment!) has brought a sense of peace at this time.

Arni and I are aware that we have moved into a new phase of his illness and pain and symptom management. Several weeks ago Arni used to have more good days than tough days, whilst it is now the reverse. Each day has elements of struggle as Arni manages headaches and nausea. We have such wonderful support from the nurses and doctor that frequently visit us from Eastern Palliative Care. These visits help us to manage Arni’s health the best we can at home, for as long as possible, which brings us a lot of comfort.

We have also noticed that Arni becomes tired more quickly when walking now, and sometimes experiences brief moments of uncoordination and imbalance. Arni is also experiencing a great deal of fatigue and now spends large portions of the day sleeping. All of these things are to be expected, but we do try to make the most of the little parts of the day where Arni has a little bit of energy. Yesterday we finally managed a trip out of the house to Eastland to pick up Arni’s new glasses. It was lovely to spend, even if only for a little while, some time buying coffee and perusing in a bookshop as well.

In the evening, if Arni is feeling energetic enough, we have enjoyed reading together. This has mostly consisted of me reading aloud to Arni, which I really enjoy! Our current read is N.T. Wright’s ‘John for Everyone.’ We have loved reading and discussing this book together as it reminds us of the core truths of our faith that we cling to at this time. It’s also time where we slow down for the day and gauge how we are going. This is precious time and we relish each day at the moment.
