Life's Journey Takes a Turn

There's no easy way to tell you this. An email eases the pain of telling the story over and over. It's hard enough living it. So here goes...

I received the diagnosis on Monday May 22, 2017 that I have Cancer of the Esophagus. It's a cancer that reveals it symptoms late so i'm already at a Stage 3. The tumor pushing on my esophagus is midway. My symptoms that led me to the doctor on May 8 were difficulty swallowing that started after the stomach flu on April 18. Swallowing became more & more difficult. On April 28 I couldn't get my food down at Culver's, not even water, and everything 'back fired' - serious choking. Then it happened again at Grizzly's on May 5. That was the last straw, time to go to the doctor. I called at 8 am on May 8 and was seen at 9 am.

After the initial endoscopy and biopsy and CAT scan in Willmar on May 18-19, I asked to be referred to Mayo. I was at Mayo Thursday and Friday, June 1 & 2. I had a PET scan and another endoscopy with more biopsies of the upper, mid, and lower esophagus. I met with a radiation oncologist and a thoracic surgeon.

They are not wasting any time. I go back on Monday, June 5 & 6, for biopsy results and simulation and treatment planning for radiation. I'll will have everything done at Mayo. This will be an aggressive treatment and will include radiation and chemo immediately, maybe more chemo, and eventually surgery to remove my esophagus and replace it with my small intestine.

I'm so blessed to have Don's support as life's journey takes this unexpected turn. The road ahead will not be smooth but exceptionally rough.

We both covet your prayers for strength, endurance and healing. God is on my side. And I trust that He will go with me on this journey.

Joshua 1:9 ESV Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Writing and seeing all this makes it all so final.  Wasn’t she just diagnosed with cancer?  And then we celebrated her being cancer free Labor Day weekend of 2017.  And then in January 2018 the return and spread of cancer.

I thought I would share this poem a good friend from our small group at our church sent me today - I believe it captures what Ann Marie would want us to consider:

Written by Carol Buhr

I am not dead.
It’s true this body I have shed,
But my soul lives, my spirit soars.
I have gone home to meet the Lord!

This is the word Christ came to bring -
That by HIS death, death lost its sting;
Because HE rose, I too shall rise
AND find my place in Paradise.

Don’t mourn for me, instead rejoice!
It was for this I made my choice.
It was for this I walked life’s way.
I have continued on today.

Don’t mourn for me.  I’ve gone to see
My loved ones who’ve preceded me,
Someday, again, you’ll see me there
And great rejoicing we will
share.

Don wants me to THANK YOU for ALL the kindness shown - through your comments, support and love - shown thru this website.

It has truly been a privilege for me write for Ann Marie (and Don) sharing her journey.  I have loved doing it. Part of me does not want this to end.  These are life’s hardest goodbyes as they are so painful and just hurt so much.  But I and you know - Ann Marie is dancing on streets of gold.  She will always be our sister.  Your friend.  Your co-worker.  Your niece.   Your cousin.  Your Aunt. All of our’s Sister in Christ!

If you don’t know the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I hope you will reach out to someone - your church, another Christian brother, sister, friend, co-worker -  even one of us.  Ann Marie, Don and I want you to know the Love of God...that HE loves us SO much, HE sent and gave HIS only Son, Jesus Christ, SO THAT, whoever BELIEVES in HIM should NOT perish, but have EVERLASTING LIFE.

Your are loved SO much.
God bless you,
Sherry
