Annie’s Story

On February 19th 2019, Annie and Mike Peshut will undergo Kidney Transplant Surgery. Mike will be donating 1 of his kidneys while Annie will be a recipient of another donor's kidney. Here is their story...

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis  (a.k.a. FSGS). Yes, it's a mouthful. If you want to know more about it than just plain kidney failure, feel free to read this link. Otherwise, keep reading :)

Our story dates back almost three decades, most notably since May of 2012 when I was officially diagnosed after my second kidney biopsy.  Fast forward through many drug therapies and failed treatments, my third biopsy finally determined my situation to be a genetic disorder that made my condition impossible to treat through drugs. So the good news is that the mystery was finally solved and I was able to get off most of my meds, the bad news is that I would have to move forward and wait for my kidneys to fail in order to move to the next course of action.

That brings us to June of last year when I was put on the “The List”—National Kidney Registry and the Mayo network transplant list. At this point, in order to get a kidney before having to succumb to dialysis, I needed to get a donor to donate their kidney on my behalf (deceased list for me was around a 5 year wait). Mike likes to call it “give a kidney, get a kidney!” Without question, Mike stepped up to be my donor. Though we were not a direct match we were entered into the Paired Donation Program in October. Since that time it's been a string of highs and lows and constant communication with our transplant team coordinators. The organization of this whole thing is unreal and of course Mayo is a machine when it come to this, dishing the good and bad news effectively and helping us to move forward each step of the way as they worked diligently to find a good match.

So here we are, 8 of us in a transplant chain—4 donors, 4 recipients—all having surgery within a few days at multiple facilities across the country. Yes, my kidney will arrive in a Playmate cooler on a plane, and Mike's will go out the same way ALL IN THE SAME DAY! Incredible!

I can't even begin to voice the gratitude that I feel, to be receiving this incredible gift. A life changing event for sure! A humbled humanbeing, I am.
Now I have two guardian angels—Mike who has faithfully always had my back no matter what the situation, and also an anonymous donor who out of the goodness of their heart is giving me the gift of life! How blessed can one be?!  I will take the responsibility of caring for my new kidney in a healthy body to the highest level.  Kazoo (that’s for my Fred Flintstone fans) will always be riding on my shoulder keeping me on the right track!

Please pray for my dear Mike and my donor for a successful surgery and recovery! They deserve to slide right through this for their selfless act! And for my incredible kids who have been supportive and loving, as both their parents undergo major surgery on the same day.

Journal entry by Annie Peshut

WE ARE HOME!🍀

I made it it past my surgeon, Nephrologist and coordinator today! It's is big day on the transplant floor when it's discharge day, as it doesn't take much to hang you up.  All three have to give you a thumbs up and then care has to be coordinated and in place at home, to get the big “D”-Discharged.

Our experience here at Mayo has been incredible! From the transplant floor staff to the transplant house, everyone is celebrated and congratulated by our housemates on the way out. I made some awesome connections with people at the house and feel a little guilty for those whom I left behind, and still have a ways to go. It truly is a humbling place to recover. We now have the lifetime membership there as anytime either of us has an appointment at Mayo, we can stay at the house. We will both be back in June for our 4 month, 2 day follow up and biopsy. Mike will be cleared and I'm on the 10 year follow up plan which I consider a gift to have my health and care followed by Mayo. The doctors will follow us closly at home through labs and the scheduled visits and  go to lengths to keep us safe and healthy.  I already came home to a huge box of lab work to be completed weekly and shipped back to Mayo for the next 8 weeks! Mayo is a machine of moving parts and on top of their game, which is part of makes them so great. Very blessed to have been apart of it!

In other amazing news-no kidding we walked in the door and 5 minutes later, Mike’s recipient reached out to him! She's from Ga. about 3 hours outside the Atlanta area and so very grateful for his gift. She was very ill before her surgery and Mikes gift literally gave her life back!

Such an amazing feeling for Mike to have been apart of that.  It was worth every minute of getting qualified as a donor,  to not only be able to help me, but also  another persons quality of life.   I'm so proud of him, it's indescribable!  I highly recommend you all to consider it.  At Mike’s appt he was told his remaining kidney will prob grow by up to 40 percent  to compensate for his gifted kidney being gone, Pretty cool and comforting. I was also told that because my kidney is so big ( from a man, which we named George )  I actually got a BOGOHO (buy one get one half off). My kidney will get to a function level  of a kidney and a half!🍀🍀🍀🍀

We are blessed, humbled, and so very grateful for our new life that I have been given,  and doing it together was really a remarkable experience. ( ok, second to a nice beach Spring break :-) ) It's all still pretty overwhelming and unbelievable.

We also were so grateful for the incredible support we received near and far,  Knowing we had you all behind us, helped us and was truly wonderful support!
We love you all and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!💚💚💚💚💚💚

~Love always, Annie & Mike
