Anna’s Story

Site created on June 9, 2018

Welcome to Anna’s Caring Bridge 2018 site. I appreciate you taking the time to care about Anna.

Many of you are aware that Anna has had intractable epilepsy since she was 11 months. You may also know she has had many, many treatments over the years without a lot of success. You may have visited her Caring Bridge page in 2013 after her first craniotomy. Here we are 5 years later, (she is now 16), facing another surgery. We are grateful because Anna was originally scheduled to undergo a Anterior Corpus Callosotomy surgery tomorrow, but after undergoing more tests last week, the decision was made for Anna to receive an RNS device instead. The RNS, or Neuropace, is a cutting edge device that is implanted on the surface of the brain to interrupt seizures. It is pretty cool stuff as it uses AI technology, and there are less than 2,000 people who have it (according to WSJ). (John is saying Anna will now be a cyborg and essentially be the next “Ironman/woman” 👍) We are very lucky Anna is a candidate. Tomorrow (June 11) Anna will undergo another craniotomy to implant the device on her brain, if you are a praying person or not, Anna could use good thoughts, positive vibes, prayers etc as she faces this surgery and recovery. I will update this page as we go. Thank you so much for caring about our incredible and brave Anna!!!

Journal entry by Sarah Dimon

Hello All,

You’ve been there through our highs and lows. This week we have had both. Anna has had some improvements since turning on her RNS device in July. Anna feels she is able to focus better at school and we have seen a big improvement in her schoolwork—which is just wonderful! However, while we have seen a mild decrease in her random break through seizures, her daily seizures have not changed. She has been on the lowest setting of her RNS, so a big improvement was not yet expected.

Last Friday was our 2nd appointment at the RNS clinic. They turned up her device another small amount. I am assuming it will take a while for her brain to adjust to it. Since then she has struggled with seizures and things have not been super. I am hopeful this will pass but will contact the MD today. If you are the praying type or the sending good vibes type, I’ll take it all. Please keep Anna in your thoughts this week. Thank you friends.
Love,
Sarah
