Annabeth’s Story

Site created on March 2, 2018

Annabeth was diagnosed with a form of epilepsy as a baby.  Over the years, her seizures have been increasingly difficult to control. She underwent brain surgery to help control her seizures.

Journal entry by Jodi Dura

Annabeth keeps impressing us with the progress she has made. This week she weaned off her first seizure medication! The medication weaning process one more big hurdle she will have to overcome before we can safely say she is seizure free.  The medication weaning process could not start prior to surgery because she was having so many seizures.  Once she had surgery, she had to wait a few months to let her brain recover from the surgery before we started stressing it with medication weaning.  Annabeth did get to start weaning a little earlier than we thought since she was doing so well.
On the physical recovery side, Annabeth rode a bicycle for the first time since surgery! She does have some trouble with starting and stopping, but once she gets going, she does great!  And she decided to start whistling while hiking this weekend.  No one is sure where she learned how, because none of us taught her.
What a week!
