Andy’s Story

Site created on December 24, 2023

Our family nightmare. While on the first night of our family vacation in Mexico, we had a lovely family dinner filled with laughs and talking about old memories. We all went to bed a few hours after our dinner. Those of you that know Andy, are quite aware that he has a whole host of “sleeping issues”. In order to not wake his sleeping sister and girlfriend up, Andy decided to sleep on the patio bed. At some point in the night, Andy got up to use the bathroom and fell over the railing onto the ground. A three story fall. Hotel security found him, after he laid there for some time. He is beyond lucky to be alive. When Pete and I came to the place where he fell, he was in shock and unable to move his legs or feet. He was rushed (with his momma) to the hospital for a long day of testing. He has a fractured lumbar vertebrae with damage to the spinal cord. There is an angel, neuro specialist, that is able to do surgery this morning (12/24/23). Thank you to everyone that is joining our prayers for a 2023 Christmas miracle.

Hello all,

Wow...one day goes by...and then a bunch of days go by!  We have settled into a pattern of a lot of therapy & gym time.  Andy is determined to figure out his "new normal" and to start getting everything working again!  When I look back on how far he has come...it really is astonishing.  Very proud of him.   Andy is also creeping closer and closer to being able to drive....again, a lot of hard work going into all of these processes!!!

There have been some mentally very "down" days for Andy...yet, he continues to GET BACK UP.  Very proud of him on this front as well.  Keep sending prayers for him (and, for all of us 😌 thank you!).  I have really learned to "dig deep" to find strength for the next minute!

I AM doing well with my grant writing, and/or, they LOVE reading what Andy has to say.  This week brought news that we are receiving an FES (functional electronic stim) bicycle.  This is a piece of equipment that Andy really liked using in therapy at the Mayo Clinic.   It is very expensive (approx. $15,000) and we never could have "swung it" on our own.   It will be awesome for him to have one here!

Lastly, we are staying filled with hope.  Andy has connected with many health professionals about future treatments and research studies.  Most all of these studies require you to be at least 12 months past injury.  So, come December of 2024....Andy will be game on.  Thank you all for adding your wishes of hope to our journey!

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.  Romans 15:13

Happy almost Friday!  Prayers for everyone's weekend & for hospital families everywhere!

Linda
