Journal entry by Andrea Carson Tanner —
Yesterday marked six months since my last chemo infusion, and I'm finally brave enough to show off my new hair! The curls are coming in slow but steady. It's also time for an overdue update on my health and treatment.
I've been on anti-estrogen meds for about three months, which I'll continue for many years, to hopefully prevent a recurrence. I'll have quarterly appointments to check in, rotating between the three doctors on my oncology team. My first mammogram since this whole thing started is scheduled for next month.
I've been feeling OK, still walking regularly, and using a great fitness program through NC Cancer Hospital called Get Real and Heel. They offer daily yoga classes (on Zoom for now) as well as 30-minute total body workouts (also virtual). Both are thorough but gentle, and the instructors do a good job of showing modifications to scale up or scale down as needed. I'm trying to do each at least twice a week, in addition to my walks.
And speaking of walks... let's schedule a walking date! I'm finding that my mental health need right now is more socialization. I think we're all feeling that, right? So, local friends, please reach out to set up a time to meet up at the trails or even just a neighborhood walk. (267-210-5341 cell or acarsontanner@gmail.com) I'm also game for a cafe chat over a warm beverage. My experience over the last year is that I feel so much better after spending time with friends; it's such a mood lifter.
Here's to a healthy 2022 and beyond!
