Amy’s Story

Site created on March 21, 2023

If you’re visiting this site, you know my wife, Amy Marcus. I am maintaining this site to update anyone that is interested in her condition.
Recently Amy was diagnosed with a molar pregnancy. This is a rare complication of pregnancy that involves unusual growth of cells called trophoblasts. In a molar pregnancy, the fetus cannot survive.

In a small number of women, the molar pregnancy can result in a rare form of cancer. Unfortunately, this happened with Amy. She has been diagnosed with choriocarcinoma. The cancer has spread to her lung. While her prognosis is good, she must undergo an intense regimen of chemotherapy. During her treatment, she is unable to work and will unfortunately lose all her hair. While the diagnosis was a shock to us, we are coming to grips with what lies before us and are encouraged that choriocarcinoma is usually successfully treated with chemotherapy. The chemo treatments will last as long as it takes to get her HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels back to zero. This will be a minimum of 2 months, but most likely 3 or more months of chemo treatment.

We appreciate all of you that have reached out to us during this difficult time.  Amy is having a hard time leaving the kids in her classroom for the rest of the year. If you're a parent of one of her students, please know that she misses them deeply and that they are in good hands.

We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Steve Marcus

Hi All,
I just wanted to let you know that today was Amy's last day of chemotherapy. While it's been a long few months, everything went well and we are looking forward to our lives getting back to normal.
I want to thank all of your thoughts, prayers, and everything you did for us. It really helped us get thru this difficult time.
Here is a post from Amy on her Facebook page:
Ready to walk into a new beginning. I count myself lucky to have been surrounded by my loved ones, who made this journey lighter. Not everyday was easy, but those around me carried me through, when I could not. Today I will focus on a path that nourishes my body, my heart, and my family.
