Amy’s Story

Site created on September 30, 2018

On August 1st I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of cancer in my bones. My first symptoms were fractures in my sternum and spine that occurred on Memorial Day weekend while exiting my kayak. It seemed so odd to be able to break bones with such little force. The cancer weakens the bones to the point I currently have Osteoporosis. It took two months of minor improvements, then more pain, more doctor visits and finally a trip to the ER, when the pain became unbearable, to get the testing done that resulted in the diagnosis.

I started treatment immediately and am lucky to have such great care from my Oncology team right here in Oneida. My system is responding well to the treatment plan they have me on. I am expected to go into a full remission after I have a stem cell transplant.

Hi all,

Paul and I met with my PA on Thursday and received the results of my bone biopsy I had about 10 days ago.
They found zero cancer! I'm considered to be in a complete remission. They will now send my marrow sample to another lab do more extensive testing called MRD. In this one they look for cancer out of a million cells. Hopefully mine will be negative for this one too. That would help us feel I could potentially keep a remission at least the average length. On this drug it is 15 months.

The only negative in my bloodwork was my white counts and neutrophils were really low, meaning my immune system is really low right now. So I have to get a shot everyday for a week and then get retested on Thursday. Paul is able to give me the shots at home. The only symptom I have is feeling more tired.

We are enjoying my health and doing the things we want to. Last weekend I was able to travel to my sister Joanne's in NC to attend my dad's 95th bday party. His birthday isn't till June, but he's spent the past few months in NC and Joanne and Mike wanted to celebrate him before he left to go back to Oneida. Over 30 family members came from around the country. It was so good to see so many that I hadn't seen in at least a few years. I think it was also good for them to see how well I'm doing. My friend Mary Matwijec drove with me. Her brother is married to my sister and Linda and Tom were both there. Mary hadn't seen Tom in 5 years so it was nice for her to come.

I've started on a special quilt for my dad that I hope to finish by his actual birthday. I hope to complete this by the time we go home in June.

Attached are photos from the party.
