Journal

On March 31, 2024, it will have been three years since Amy’s strokes. It’s hard to say out loud, because it’s like being slapped by this great revelation of the raw truthfulness and accuracy of the doctors at the beginning of this journey when they said “you need to prepare for a super marathon”. In those three years, we have learned so much about our marriage, our friendships, our community, our physical and emotional limits, and our faith. As I have said before, from one perspective, we are fortunate to have learned things about the strength and resiliency of our love, things that many families may never experience. From the other perspective, it is unfortunate that it was through a great injury and extremely difficult recovery that these things were revealed. We have also recently learned that having experienced such hardship does not immunize you to further challenges. About a month ago, just after Valentine’s Day, Amy was diagnosed with a form of JAK2 Myeloproliferative Neoplasm, which, as we understand it, is a form of blood cancer that is causing her bone marrow to be hyper-productive. Fortunately, the prescribed treatment is a low dose chemo drug which Amy has responded well too, does not cause hair loss, and has not resulted in nausea. Though there are still some unknowns, follow-up appointments, and tests, we are optimistic and thankful for the prognosis given this far. I do apologize for the long gap between updates once again. Writing seems more difficult these days, and I’m not sure why, but I am certain that the frequency of my writing/updates is directly proportional to how well Amy is doing (less frequent = right direction). We pray that all of you have a blessed Easter. Spend time with those you love, and don’t take those moments for granted. He is risen. He is risen indeed.
