Allie’s Story

Site created on August 10, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On February 26th, 2021,  Allie was visiting her brother, Luke, in North Carolina, when she went to the emergency room due to shortness of breath.  The doctors did a CT scan of her lungs and diagnosed her with pneumonia.  Allie received  a call the next day and was told they found an ascending aortic aneurysm on the CT scan and Allie was to follow up with her primary doctor in Minnesota.

Allie has had numerous appointments with a cardiologist in Fargo and her case was then transferred to Duluth since the Fargo cardiologist wasn't a surgeon and Duluth is the only Essentia facilities in the area that does this kind of surgery.

Allie hadn't experienced many symptoms until a month ago when she was having chest pains and shooting pain in her back and arms.  She was airlifted to Fargo where more tests showed the main aneurysm had grown and there are 2 more in her aorta.

Allie will be having open heart surgery on Tuesday, September 7th, at the Essentia Health Duluth Hospital.  Dr. Heck will be performing the surgery.  Allie has waited for the surgeons return from medical leave as she was advised, he is "one of the best".   That is why she has waited to have this surgery until September.

Allie will have an 8-12 week recovery with the first month at her mom's house.  She will have restrictions that first month with many follow up appointments and cardio rehab.

I felt this site was the easiest way to stay connected with everyone that cares and has been sending good thoughts and prayers as Allie completes this next journey.  We will update this site the day of surgery and days to follow with her condition and when she will be ready for visitors.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Cathy Upton

Allie will be treated with meds to get rid of the fluid around her heart.  They are “thinking” the higher , concerning numbers of the tests they took yesterday could have been from Allie “possibly” having Omnicrom a few weeks back when she had a stomach bug.  This viral infection caused the liquid around the heart.  Medicine should clear this up. Thank God and best news we could have received
