Ali’s Story

Site created on April 25, 2018

At 1am on Thursday, April19 Ali had a severe seizure in bed. Thankfully Ryan was home and called 911. EMS arrived and rushed her to the hospital. After an MRI they determined she had several tumors on the membrane surrounding the brain. The Neurology Dept at Good Samaritan hospital in San Jose decided to perform surgery that day. Ali was taken into OR at 3pm Thursday afternoon and was there for over 6 hours.  It’s good to note that her neurosurgeon is an absolute all-star,. They managed to remove the majority of the large tumor that was pushing on her brain, it was the largest he has ever seen.  There are several small ones that will need to be monitored over time. Ali is in Neuro ICU. A follow up MRI showed that the brain is doing well, but she did experience a stroke to some extent. The surgeon says the stroke is in the non-motor area of the brain and she should still recover fully with therapy. She is still sedated, intubated  on a ventilator and receiving many medications. This morning Wednesday, April 25 Ali was rushed back into surgery. Overnight her intracranial pressure went up, the surgeon felt he needed to relieve the pressure by removing a portion of her scalp to give the brain room for swelling. This portion of bone will remain off  until it is safe to put it back on.   Ali’s husband Ryan, Bruce and I will try to keep this site updated. We appreciate your kind words and all the prayers that have been sent our way.

Journal entry by Ryan McCall

It turns out, this fun little chapter did not end with 2018. We received a call from the neurosurgeon December 26th. He had reviewed Ali's most recent CT and discussed with the plastic surgeon. It was agreed that her body is reabsorbing the right side side of her skull that had previously been removed and then replaced. Because of this, they needed to again remove it and replace it was a plastic piece instead.

Ali went in to surgery at 7:30am PST today. Total time was about 2 hours. I met with the neuro and plastic surgeons after, and they agreed that things went better than they even expected them to. The fit of the new bone flap was perfect, there was no infection or damage otherwise, and closure of the wound was straightforward. They believe she will make a quick recovery. Ali is in the neuro ICU tonight, tomorrow she will either transfer to general surgery recovery or head straight home, it all depends on how she's feeling.

We're grateful for all the well wishes and support coming from everywhere. We are also looking forward to this being the last surgery she will need, and moving on to the next stage of life while watching the Wonder Twins grow.
