Alexis’s Story

Site created on June 23, 2020

So ... it seems that I have cancer. It caught me when I didn't even know I was running from it. A persistent upset stomach led to a few doctor visits, which led to an ultrasound and two CT scans. On June 22, my doctor told me that it appeared I have ovarian cancer. A meeting with an oncologist a few days later yielded more details, including that it’s actually colon cancer, but the most important detail:  It’s treatable.

Journal entry by Alexis wilson

The Wilson family continues to be grateful for the outpouring of kindness, comfort and love that so many of you have shown over the last many months and especially, the last 48 hours. Alexis' obituary will appear in the Fort Worth Star Telegram this Wednesday. Details about her Thursday, November 3rd memorial service are at the bottom of her obituary here...

Alexis Ann Wilson was welcomed into the presence of her Savior on October 29th, 2022, surrounded by family at home in Fort Worth.

Alexis radiated joy, tenacity, hope and servanthood to all she encountered. Ultimately, her life, her heart and her beautiful words (both verbal and through her writings) pointed people to Christ.

She is survived by her parents, Tom and Linda Wilson, her brother, Brad Wilson, her sister and brother-in-law, Elise and Glenn Austell of Lubbock. She is also survived by the 5 lights of her life - her nieces and nephews, Peyton Wilson, Jon Thomas Wilson, Lilly Wilson, Will Austell and Turner Austell.

Alexis is also survived by the countless number of people whose stories and journeys have been forever impacted by her selfless love, grace, intentionality, lightning quick wit and her infectious smile. She was the best of all of us.

Alexis was born in Amarillo, Texas on September 12, 1969. She graduated from Texas Tech University in 1991 with a Bachelors Degree in Journalism. While in college, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Mortar Board, Raider Recruiter and a volunteer leader with Young Life of Lubbock. Her giftedness in writing, marketing and advertising led her to a fulfilling career in those fields. She served in various marketing and freelance writing/editing capacities before joining Fort Worth Magazine in 2000, where she served as Editor for five years. But the most gratifying part of her career was with her Fort Worth Zoo family where she was responsible for advertising, public/community/media relations, fundraising functions including special events, capital campaigns and annual giving.

Alexis loved her work, loved her church and she loved her city. And she loved her friends as if they were blood. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for “her people” and “her people” included thousands from all walks of life, all ages, from all over the world. She leaves an indelible mark on the lives of so very many with her long and vibrant ministry of presence and faithfulness. She was fiercely protective and passionate when it came to her family and you, dear friend were family to her.

But it was her love for Christ that fueled her passions, her life and her loving spirit toward the world she lived in. And we celebrate that she is by His side today.

Alexis’ memorial service will be held at Doxology Church (4805 Arborlawn Drive) in Fort Worth on Thursday, November 3rd at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, Alexis wanted to invite those interested into charitable giving opportunities to:
