John’s Story

Site created on December 1, 2020

On 11/2 my dad, John Alexander, was exposed to COVID-19. On 11/4, he was feverish and coughing a lot.  He got tested on 11/7 and on 11/10 he learned his results were positive. My mom, Margie Alexander, brought him to Regions Hospital on 11/11 where he was admitted due to difficulty breathing. We thought he would just be there for a few days to catch his breath, but it took a turn for the worse. He was transferred to the ICU on 11/20 where he was doing okay until he was experiencing tachycardia the morning of 11/22, so he was put on the ventilator. We have been able to set up video calls with him, which has been nice! We know he can hear us and he knows we are all rooting for his recovery. This has been a rough rollercoaster ride, but we are optimistic!  Prayers and positive thoughts are needed!!

Journal entry by Margie Alexander

A friend  of mine at work stated 'I can only imagine at this point what you and your family are going through.  Such a tough and really unbelievable journey – I’m sure you are still in shock.'

Shocking is an under statement.  One day my family and I are telling John stories of our day laughing, smiling, having fun and then in a flash life changes.  John, even though he drove me crazy multiple times, had a heart of gold.  He made me laugh and that is what a family needs.  Love and laughter.  I am missing him a lot but I have a ton of memories to rely on.  The kids bought a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert streamlined ticket for this past weekend and we, as a family, like we have done for multiple years beforehand, got together to watch the concert.  Even though it was emotional because John/Dad was not air drumming with us or laughing at us girls swishing our long hair around, we felt his presence with the wonderful music surrounding us with his Love.

I can only imagine how lucky John is being in the presence of God.  He is probably striking up a great conversation about a NASCAR race or when are the Vikings going to win the Super Bowl with a beer in his hand.  My hope for the Christmas Season and throughout the year you hug your family as much as you can and embrace them as they are.  Everyone is special.

John's service is December 26 at noon and will be streamlined per our St John's website. More information is below.

Thank you everyone for your prayers. Blessings to you and your family.
