Alaine’s Story

Site created on June 6, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Alaine has been battling something called Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) in her liver for a number of years. In recent months she has struggled to find a "new normal" - often struggling with pain, fatigue, and also with progression of her illness. She was pursuing chemotherapy to slow the progression, and was hopeful about an experimental treatment that she was thinking to start later this year after the chemotherapy.

On Tuesday, May 30, Alaine went in for chemotherapy.  The following day, she returned for her next course of treatment.  At that time, doctors discovered that with her limited liver function, her body is unable to process the toxic chemo drugs.  She is unable to receive further chemo treatments.

Currently, Alaine is pursuing palliative care.  This site is our way to keep her community of fans (yes, that's us!) up to date on her condition as she writes the final chapter.  For those of us who love and support Alaine, please come here to stay connected to her journey.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kate Smith

Hello all,

It was lovely to see such a crowd at Alaine's memorial.  I felt the service, and all who attended it, was lovely.  I really enjoyed the sea of purple in the crowd!

Thank you to each and every person who has been with us on this journey.   Some folks have asked for a copy of "Alaine's Gems of Wisdom", which were read at the service - I've included those in this post.

This site will remain active for a time for those who still wish to share memories, pictures, or connection.   I don't anticipate many further updates on my end.

In closing, I will leave you with a poem, written by WUUC member Ann Lu, in the hours after she heard about Alane's prognosis.  With love to you all.  💜

Sunset Prayer For Alaine

Sunlight with all its promise on the western horizon

As another day ends, too soon, but with hopes for tomorrow.

A life is thus.

Quiet and serene, yet with love reflecting back to me.

Memories, sometimes painful, sometimes positive,

Always present, even when you are not.

We all leave the world, with projects unfinished,

Trusting that others will complete them,

When the light of day returns.

Sunlight and darkness, love and grief,

One cannot exist without the other.

Tears are price of friendship.

Orange on the western horizon

Clouds turning purple and pink in the sky

A beautiful, sad goodbye.
