Aiden’s Story

Site created on August 27, 2021

On Tuesday, Aug 24 Aiden was biking to work. At the bottom of a hill, he went over the handlebars of his bike and slid on his face for eight feet. Aiden was rushed to UIHC where he had emergency surgery for a broken jaw and orbital fractures. He also has a broken nose and a two fractures in his back. Thankfully, he was wearing a quality helmet and suffered no brain injury. He wants everyone to promise him they will always wear a helmet.
Aiden's girlfriend (India) and parents (Cindy and Michael) will be updating this site, with the help of Aiden, which we will be using to share updates about his recovery in one place. We have been touched by the many kind offers of help we've received in the last few days. Thanks for supporting Aiden as he heals.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Aiden Bettine

The wire holding my jaw shut came out today! The rubber bands that replaced it, feel equally as tight. Now it’s up to me to talk and move my jaw to help the healing process. I used a straw for the first time and ate some apple sauce, a huge improvement from the thin liquid diet of the last two weeks. Each day I realize how long this recovery is going to take and how hard it will be. I’ve come an exceptionally long way that has surprised all of us. My face, which was once unfamiliar, seems pretty normal given the circumstances. What is most concerning to me is the nerve damage. It’s yet unclear how much feeling I will regain as my nose, cheeks, and right side of my upper lip don’t have feeling. From experience, I know how long nerve damage can take to heal and how ghostly it feels when it doesn’t return. I never imagined this would happen to my face.

Even so, I am grateful to be alive and to have all my limbs in working order. I am grateful for my family and partner. I am grateful for my friends, co-workers, and community. I can’t wait to get back to my daily routine - even if it’s a little slower. Thanks to everyone for the love and support.
