Adam’s Story

Site created on August 1, 2018

On Thursday, July 26, 2018, Adam was unable to sleep because of a headache. Becky took him to the ER at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, where he was examined and then quickly sent to MGH. The following Monday, July 30, Adam had surgery that lasted 6+ hours to remove a glioma in his brain. As of Wednesday, August 1, here is what we understand:

     * A glioma is a brain tumor by its nature, and is highly unlikely to spread outside the brain
     * The glioma could not be completely removed
     * It may exist microscopically in areas around the tumor and in other parts of the brain
     * It is a fast growing cancer.

Once Adam has healed enough from the surgery, he will most likely begin six weeks of chemo/radiation treatment. Chemo will probably be by pill; radiation would likely be five days a week for 20 minutes at a time. This will likely reduce and inhibit the cancer but is not expected to eliminate it. The surgeon said they do not yet have enough information to offer a prognosis.

Adam is expected to return home on Thursday, August 2. He will need some degree of support, both at home and most likely help getting to and from medical appointments. We will use this CaringBridge web site to let Adam's strong family and communities know how best to help Adam, Becky, and Brenna.
