Adam’s Story

Site created on August 21, 2018

On August 13, Adam was admitted to the Oncology unit at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN after a recent biopsy of a mass in his chest confirmed he had B-cell Lymphoma. After several tests, imaging, and a larger biopsy, later that week, Adam was diagnosed with Primary Mediastinal B-cell Lymphoma. This essentially means that he has a fairly aggressive lymphoma that originated in the mediastinal area in his chest. He has several masses in his chest & neck, which his treatment team believes will respond quickly to treatment. On August 20, he began his chemotherapy treatment and the journey to a cure is now underway for both of us. His chemotherapy regimen runs 24/7 for almost a week at a time, and they anticipate 6 cycles every 21 days. We will be back and forth between Rochester and Park River for a week of chemo, and two weeks home until mid-December, for sure. His treatment plan is directed by a Hematologist who specializes in B-cell lymphomas (absolutely incredible!), as well as about 5 other MDs and midlevels - some of the best from the Hematology world. We truly feel that Mayo is the best place that he could be right now. Everybody we've met, including the providers & staff and other patients and families, is so encouraging and genuinely caring. Overall, Adam is feeling good, although we know this will likely change as we see how his body responds to treatment. Of course, he is still funny as ever and maintains his positive attitude. For now, we are doing our best to take one day at a time and keep our faith strong during this journey. We are so grateful that we can be together through this (they even let me stay in his room here at Mayo), and we appreciate all of the love and support! As you know, Adam is an avid runner and lover of everything endurance-related, so he wanted this site to capture his journey on the race to being cancer-free. I (Emily) will do my best to update this site and keep everybody posted with what is going on in our world.

Journal entry by Emily Koenig

We want to reassure everybody that no news on here is good news. Adam's 3 month appointments went really well! The scans showed no change since January, so he is still in remission. We are happy to hear that he can just keep on doing what he’s been doing and we will plan to return in another couple of months. 🙌🏻  It was a short trip this time, but we were able to watch our nephew, Tyler, score a hat trick on the way through!

Thank you for the continued thoughts, prayers, and well wishes!
