Adam’s Story

On Friday, June 18th, our world as we know it was turned upside down. We got the news no parent ever wants to get. Your son has cancer. Adam was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma - an extremely rare form of bone cancer in his upper left arm. This shocking news coming just one week after graduating from high school, after just getting back from a fun grad trip to Florida and one week before he was to go to orientation to prepare to start his freshman year at UofSC.

His arm had been hurting him off and on since March but we thought it was a muscle pull or injury from lacrosse or weight lifting. We didn't think much of it but when he came home from his Florida trip, the top of his arm was stiff and swelled. We took him to be looked at right away. In a matter of a week, Adam had x-rays, MRI, biopsy, blood work, CT scan and PET scan. The cancer was detected from the MRI and confirmed with the biopsy. Thankfully the scans showed the cancer is localized in the upper arm which is great news given the circumstances. Adam is going to beat this!!

We have created this site so that we can post updates on Adam and his care as he begins chemotherapy treatment just after the July 4th holiday weekend on July 6th. They estimate 9 months of treatment. He will first start with 12 weeks of therapy to shrink the tumor and then his medical team will determine if he will need surgery or radiation to remove the tumor. Many more weeks of therapy after that. He will not be starting his freshman year in the fall as planned.

We kindly ask you to leave your well wishes, thoughts, prayers, and memories for Adam here on this site. All of us, and especially Adam, are coming to grips with his new reality and he wishes to maintain some peace on his cell phone and social media. When he is ready and comfortable he looks forward to reading and responding to all your messages via this site. He thanks everyone for the well wishes on his graduation. In the meantime, we will be doing our best to keep everyone updated through his journey of healing and appreciate you keeping Adam in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for your love and support during this tremendously challenging time in our lives. We are all still in shock and disbelief, but will stay hopeful and optimistic that he is in God's hands and will get through this!

Amazing!!! That is the first word that comes to mind when I think about what just happened last week. Adam had surgery Tuesday, October 12th at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte to remove the cancerous bone in his left arm. Dr. Anderson, his surgeon, said they were able to remove the tumor and did not see any surprises or additional cancer. They believe they got it all. Hallelujah!! So grateful for the great care he has received. We were told the procedure would be 7-8 hours and he would need 3-5 days in the hospital to recover. Well our cancer superhero was out of surgery in 4 hours and home in less than 2 days!! Adam now has a bionic left arm and is on the road to recovery and remission!!! Like I said earlier… just amazing!!!

He is home adjusting to his new reality and we are in awe at his strength and stamina. We focus now on his comfort to control the pain and keeping his spirits up! After a couple weeks of recovery, he will start back on chemotherapy again to ensure the cancer is all gone. This will be the final phase of his treatment! No radiation will be required. 🙏We remain positive, hopeful and resilient through this life changing experience! We appreciate all the support, love and prayers!!! We all feel it! ❤️👍🙏❤️👍🙏
