Abby’s Story

Site created on September 9, 2018

On July 11th, an MRI showed an acoustic neuroma, which is a benign tumor, that develops in the hearing nerve leading from my brain to the inner ear. This nerve sits alongside the facial nerve, which controls muscle movement in my face. These nerves also delivers balance information. We know that due to the large size of the tumor that I will have 100% hearing loss in my right ear. There is 50% chance of temporary, up to a year, of facial paralysis, with 15% chance that it will be permanent.

I am heading to Mayo at Rochester right now for surgery tomorrow morning morning. It Will take about 12 to 14 hours. We will use this site to post updates throughout the week. Thanks to everyone for your prayers and positive thoughts! They are much appreciated!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Shannon Dahlberg

It is truly amazing that we have been home for almost 48 hours now. Time flies at home! We are so grateful for all of your prayers, comfort, and support. Prayers were definitely answered this past week. When we reflect upon these past days, we remember Dr. Link closing the door and sitting down to give us a recap of the surgery. We heard words and phrases such as 'rare', 'multiple tumors', 'wanted to hit a home run but we didn't', 'much more difficult surgery than anticipated' and saw a look of defeat in his eyes. We prepared ourselves for the worst, but when we saw our girl in the ICU, smiling and even cracking a joke or two, we knew she was much better than expected. This was confirmed when our favorite resident came in and told us how ecstatic the entire team was to hear how strong her facial nerve was and how she was responding as she came out of anesthesia. During the week, we heard multiple times that Abby is a rock star and how impressed everyone was with the results. What a great lesson this was to us, as we too felt the defeat of Monday (although how can you say defeat when your daughter makes it out of a 12 hour brain surgery), about the strength of prayer and God's guidance.
What's next? Abby has a three month recovery, lifting nothing more than 10 pounds. The nausea, dizziness, double vision, and ringing in her ear will hopefully go away soon. We will see the team at Mayo on December 5th and discuss Gamma Knife radiation to get the rest of the tumor, and look into genetic testing to see if these tumors will continue to come back throughout her life. We will continue to say prayers of thanks and for healing and invite others to pray with us.
Thank you for joining us on this journey!
