Glad to hear about your checkup, and praying for more good news next month.

Sorry about Aunt Wendy.

I'm so sorry to hear about Aunt Wendy. Have a safe trip to be with family. Fergus' counts look great so maybe the testicle just has a mind of it's own (I didn't think that happened until they were older). Testicles: the bane of the world's existence.

Hi Lauren! I have you guys on my favorites list so I check in occasionally. Great to hear that Gus sailed thru his appt! I'm sure checking on that one issue won't make him too happy!
I see your Mom all the time - the kids love seeing "Quinnie" at the quilt store!
My condolences to Rob and his family - that must have been quite a shock. Travel safely!

I absolutely love to read what both you and Rob have to say. You are both so eloquent and I really relate to what you both write. In fact, this last post really hit home, as we're just a few weeks off treatment and I'm starting to realize that the fear never goes away.
Sending my love to you and yours.

As another Cancer Mom in off-treatment mode, I think your fears and anxiety all sound perfectly 'normal'. We spend so many years in remote control and just do what we have to do, that these normal times bring too much time to think and worry. Every fever, every little sore, abnormal blood tests etc, send us into panic mode or get us thinking about the what if's. Can't say if it will ever go away, these are our children. While we don't ever want relapse, it will find a corner of our brain to hang out in and the thought will give us pokes now and then. All we can do is try to set that other shoe down gently and hope the man below never hears it fall!!!!!!!!

Don't worry--this has happened to Finn before, too. Give him some high iron foods and it will pop right back up. Mine is so low most of the time that I can rarely donate blood. Eamonn's is so high he wouldn't pass a drug test in cycling. There's a huge range--never fear! Spinach anyone???? A nice burger sounds better.

Hi Fergus and Lauren! You may not remember me - it's been awhile since we've "talked". I am so thrilled to see Fergus continuing to do well. Audrey Kate is now 19 months OT and has almost identical counts to Fergus'. I'm horrible at updating her CB site. I should though so that everyone can see how fantastic she is. So far, we've seen no real late effects. She is doing well in school but is a bit slow in completing work. We'll have to watch that to make sure it's not a processing issue. She loves being a "normal" 8-year old and does not want to discuss her leukemia past at all. The only time the topic can come up is at her bimonthly doctor's appts and any oncology-related parties. I figure she'll talk about it when and if she's ready. Right now, she doesn't want to be any different than her friends. Well, I just wanted to let you know I still think of you, Fergus, and wishing you well!

Happy Holiday!

Hi All:

We hope Santa Claus is good to you all, especially Gus & Norah!

Gram & Grampy are excited you will be with us a week from today, on Christmas Day. We will have a big group of family at our Christmas Day Buffet and hope you come with empty bellies!

We will miss having Uncle Michael for Christmas and hope he has an enjoyable one feeding the homeless and visiting with friends. We are so proud of him devoting his life to others who are in need and know there will be no coal left by Santa in his stocking!

Love you all and see you in 7 days!

I just happened by tonight and saw your update! YAY! I love reading about your life in Vermont and your homeschooling. If we didn't live in CO, I'd want to live in VT. But maybe that's just because I love White Christmas. Snow, snow, snow, snow, snow!. . .I'll think of you when I watch it! Fergus' counts will be great next week--I just know it! We're off to NYC next week for Finn's Make A Wish trip! I haven't blogged about it yet--I'm waiting to get our intinerary from MAW late this week. They make you wait until right before you go. Nice surprise, and yet horrifying for a control freak such as myself who is wanting to know exactly when we have to be where! Happy Belated Thanksgiving!

Ohhhh, I was so happy to stop by and see an update! I miss you! I'm so sorry to hear about all of the challenges you've had this fall. And the leg pain? What is up with that? We hear about it from Finn, too, and it sends me into a dither. Our oncologist probably thinks I'll never leave them alone. I'm imagining you all walking in the beautiful fall leaves...

Hi Everyone!
It was great to see you in clinic and it is great to read an update from you! We are so sorry about all your recent challenges - and especially your kitty. Teague is gorgeous - of course. You all looked wonderful and we are so glad that everything went well this month and that Fergus is doing well. We have a box for Norah when you are ready!! Love, Jennifer & Betty

Wow - what a time you guys have had. We also lost a kitty in the past month. My son Jake picked out his first ever walking out of a tank (i.e., hermit crab) pet. We picked a black and white kitty out from the humane society. Unfortunately, within three weeks he got sick and died suddenly. I know how hard it is - especially if your kitten helped you so much during your difficult days of treatment. I am glad to hear October is turning around for you guys and what beautiful pictures of your outing (on the day of my wedding anniversary). Take care and enjoy your fall days!!

So glad to read an update. I can totally understand the feeling of not wanting to be reminded of the last three years. I just myself, update my son’s site after a 6-month void in my updates. However, even though I was not updating our site, I have been checking on Ferges and family. I find a fondness for your family and can relate to your cancer mom worries, etc. Anyway, I am happy to hear you are having “normal” problems. I do hope you continue to update some and/or blogg because I love reading of your parenting and daily lives in VT (a place I secretly would love to live – I guess its not much of a secret now!).

Take care and enjoy your cancer-free days!

So glad to hear things are going so well!!! Sure hope Fergus goes to camp. Owen went to Camp Good Days for the first time last year (also an overnight camp for kids with cancer). It was very hard on both of us as he boarded that bus. I was crying he was scared and we just watched each other as the bus pulled out. But you know what - he had an AWESOME time and forgot all about being sad and scared as he entered this fabulous world! This year he almost forgot to give me a hug&kiss before boarding - I had to call him back!!! So give it a try!!!!

Hey Fergus and family.

Hope you're all doin' well and enjoying the winter like we are. Lot's of sliding, ice-fishing, ski-dooing, etc. We are having a good old fashioned winter that does not want to end. Stewie's off at a friend's house sliding and eating ribs and seafodd lasagna, so he's good. You should plan a trip here and visit. We'd buy you all a lobster. Hi Lauren, I'm glad you've found the space to start thinking about all of these aspects of your life, beyond leukemia. I know how overwhelming it can feel, trying to decide how to move forward, but it is a good thing. You will work it all out and continue to get more of what you want from your life by facing all of this.

Good luck with the new adventures, and I hope you find lots of joy and satisfaction in the days to come. I'll be thinking of you as we move closer to our own OT date (this July!).

Hi Lauren! I learned of Rob's climb when I was at Onion River yesterday with Sir Sox the Cat. SO I had to check in here and say hello! I seem to miss you when I'm at the Vets but know you are always in my thoughts and prayers in Northfield.
I am struggling a bit with Morgan's O/T coming up in April. I, of course, am thrilled she is almost done this journey; but I am petrified of the thought of being without the safety net of chemo. I'm just praying on it.
If it would be ok, we'd like to mention Rob's climb in Morgan's C/B Journal. Just let me know if we can put a little plug in for him. (Matthew was hilarious at Onion River. When they told me Rob was going to climb Mt. Ranier, Matthew pipes in "Why not Mount Everest?"...everyone got a good chuckle and assured Matt that Rob had to start with a wee bit of a smaller Mountain before he attempted to conquer Everest. Just let Rob know that Matt has all the faith in him to make that his next climb - haha!)
As I read your entry I sense that Matt and Fergus are alike in many ways. Maybe a play date one of these days, and if you and Rob need some adult time and G & G aren't available, we'd be happy to entertain Fergus and Nora. Morgan can show Fergus her port scar! (grin)
Thank you for allowing us into your lives through this Journal. Your writing has been spectacular and has really given a clear and heartfelt picture as to what the journey is like. Praying always that Fergus remains A Survivor!

I read your thoughts and I recognise a lot of them from my own experience. Here in Sweden they do not perform any tests like that - only if problem arises. And right now we do not think much about how chemo might have affected Leon in a long time perspective. We'll see what happens in school though. Leon too seems to be very personal in his learning style, and I hope school will be able to cope with that.
I also recognise that part about problems to have babysitters and find time for yourself, or maybe rather problems to decide that it is important enough.

I think leaving this site and focus more on life just now is a good decision - but I know for sure I will continue to check in and look for updates... I will miss you here!

It is great to hear that you are at a point where life is too busy to need this page right now! Hopefully it will stay that way!

I wondered how those neuropsych evals were done, and now I wonder how Kaden will do in a couple of years. The answers that Fergus gave sound reasonable to me, but then again we homeschool also, so thinking outside the box is normal around here too. My kids stink at fill in the blank questions! Hmm...at 8 years old kids should be able to ask an adult to show them how to do something, he is 8 not 15. Like boys need another excuse not to read the directions before performing a task lol.

Enjoy the date nights and exploring things that are your own!

Oh, I have read your entry about fears at night many times now. Leon had a stomach infection with fever last week and I had just been reflecting upon many of those things. I recognised it all. Those relapse scenarios playing in my head at night. And all this thinking about how to think, trying to find strategies for how to think, strategies that does not work at night...

Lauren, don't worry about your friends and family using up their support for you, Rob, Gus and Norah. The support is strong and steady, just as yours has been for so many others. It's okay to share your fears - especially if it lightens the load a little. Be strong. In 20 years you'll look back on this time with relief that your natural fears were only that.

Hi there,

Thanks for stopping by our site. I'm was quite surprised that Bianca was so confident as this is only the second time that she's been to her daycare centre since she got sick.

I'm so pleased that you are finished with treatment. Did you find that life is pretty much what it was like before the illness or has it changed quite a bit?

Happy birthday Fergus! Hope it was a wonderful wonderful day!

Morgan got her OT date. Last oral chemo on April 25th! We're excited and scared at the same time. But hopeful. Always, endlessly hopeful - that the beast is gone for good!
Was thinking of you because I'm getting ready to bring Sox in to Onion River for a follow up. He had a lovely abcess burst on his tail (UGH YUCK!) so we're going in to see what's left to do. Its amazing that getting antibiotics into a cancer teen is easier than getting them into a 9 pound cat. LOL.

Hey Fergus and family! I am so thrilled that you are already 7 months OT - just a couple weeks behind Audrey Kate. She had her bloodwork last week and her ANC was over 5000 and her WBC was 12,000. It hasn't been that high ever since treatment began. Those high numbers take a little getting used to. I just ran the Disney half marathon for TNT and was thinking of you and all my other leukemia heroes the whole way. I will try to update Audrey Kate's CB site soon - I'm no where near as good at updating as your mom is! Hope you keep feeling well!

Love,
Robin

Man! 7 months! That's flown by for me, I don't know about you! :) I'm so glad counts were so great. I hope the sinus troubles get cleared up soon.

Lauren - I can't wait to see you Monday. It will be nice to talk in person again. See you at the airport. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Betsy...

Oh the sinus troubles for Finn--they are the bane of my (and his) existence. We are finally having some success with a few methods. He's letting me use some saline spray which we're doing morning and night. Because of the sensation he gets from the spray, he is FINALLY blowing his nose. May I just say hallelujah??? I also bought one of those NeilMed sinus rinse things. I use the adult version and now they make a pediatric version. It's somewhat of a battle to get him to do it, but it seems to help and once he realizes that, he settles down and lets me squirt the stuff up his nose. So at least stuff is coming out now and I can see that it's not actually infected, like I thought. We're also meeting with a homeopath next week to see what else we can do because the sinuses are eventually going to drive me around the bend. So, now I've taken up a huge chunk of the guestbook talking about things coming out of Finn's sinuses. How appetizing is that? Our oncologist says these sinus issues are very common is these post-chemo kids so at least we're all in this together. I'll think of you every time Finn's nose drips now. Happy New Year!
