Hello, everyone! I hope and pray that all is well with all of you! God is soooooo good and He is still at it...blessing Jalen and making him stronger each and everyday! We owe all the praise and the glory to Jesus...without Him, who knows where or how we would be...lost, for sure! Praise the Lord!
Jalen is recovering wonderfully! He is getting stronger...yeah, those monster calf muscles are coming back, and he is more active now than he has been in quite a while! I am so thankful to God for all that He has done. I know that Jalen is special...God has big plans for him. He has touched so many already, even at such a young age. You would not believe all of the hair on his head!!(...and face...and back...and EVERYWHERE!!!) As long as he is on the cyclosporin, he's gonna look like a little hairball. But, he had his grandmother shape his hair up the other day and tighten up his hair-line, and he looks soooo handsome! I'll have to post some new pictures soon...bear with me. His counts are still really good and he is eating like there is no tomorrow!! Praise God!
Nigel is doing very well. His teachers are so pleased with the changes in his attitude and work ethic since we returned home from Duke. His grades have gone up remarkably! He just might make A/B Honor roll this six weeks, which I promised him a Nintendo DS if he did...so needless to say, he is working hard!!
I am truly enjoying being home and reunited with both my boys...they are so entertaining and amazing. I know that I am blessed to call them sons! Some advise...take the time to love on your kids every chance you get...each and everyday. It is nothing like the bond you form, and the therapy it brings...my kids are my sunshine on the cloudiest days...God uses them to bring me so much joy. Even when they upset me by doing those foolish things that kids (especially boys) sometimes do...I can't help but see all the good in them and love them still. And I know that they love me too...because I can't leave their sight for 5 minutes before they start blowing up my cell!!! LOL!
Well, I want to end this email with a very important request. I want to ask that everyone please lift up our friend, Deondra who is at Duke and is having a rough time. Please take the time to mention her name in prayer and if you feel led, to turn over your plate and fast a meal or two for her healing! That is the least we can do! You know that "the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much".
Take care and be blessed!! Love you all!

Hello, friends and family!! I know, I know...its been a long time since I updated the page and I apologize to all of you who check the page regularly to see how Jalen is getting along. I am back to work now, so my routine has changed quite a bit. I am working nights and trying to sleep during the day, which doesn't really work too well for me. Kevin is with Jalen during the day while I snooze and I am up in time to get dinner ready, help with homework and spend a little time with the boys. Its not easy, but we manage. I thank God for my job because everyone has been great, and just because I have one!!! Glory to God!!
Jalen has been going to UVA every Monday for his check-up appointments with Dr. Dunsmore and everything is going great. Other than trying to keep his magnesium, potassium and phosphorus up...things have been going smoothly. His counts look beautiful and he feels good. He's been getting lots of exercise. He's been playing tennis, basketball and running around with Nigel and Kevin. They keep him very active. He has been eating very well.
Overall, everything is going great and as expected at this point. God is good and He is soooo faithful to His promises and to His Word!!
Just wanted to let you all know how Jalen is getting along. Please continue to pray for a continued smooth and speedy recovery for Jalen and our friends at Duke. Please mention Cortez and Deondra in your prayers. They are two of our friends who are still down at Duke.
Until next time, take care and be blessed!! Love ya!

Hello, friends and family! I bet you guys were wondering what in the world happened and why I hadn't updated in quite a while. Well, everything is alright!! Praise the Lord...whe are finally HOME!! Back in the 'Burg to stay!! God is so good and we owe all of Jalen's success to Him.
We arrived home on Friday, January 7th at around 10:30 pm. I suggested that we spend the night in NC and leave early the next morning, but Jalen was like..."Yeah, right...are you kidding?!" So, we had to head home as soon as we got the "discharge is a 'go'" nod from Dr. Martin. We were so excited to be home and so blessed because very few kids actually get to go home on their 100th day!! To God be all of the glory!
Jalen is doing very well readjusting here at home. He is still under the same restrictions as he was in North Carolina...no malls, no church, no visiting...etc. But with Nigel and Kevin around, there is never a dull moment!! Last weekend when the Steelers played the guys had Granddad Bro over for a 'Steelers party' since they are all Steelers fans (except for Nigel). They had a blast except for when the game got really close and then everyone got quiet! Thank God the Steelers pulled through because I hate to see grown men cry...especially over a football game!! Ha,ha,ha!!
We were so excited to see our UVA family again when we went over for our first clinic visit on Monday! We got lots of smiles and hugs, and it made us realize just how much we missed everyone there! We love our hospital families at UVA and Duke and have met so many wonderful people on this journey...people who have touched us and who we will never forget!!! We love you guys!
Please continue to pray for Jalen to continue to recover and progress wonderfully, and also for our friends still at Duke...specifically Deondra and Cortez. Please sign the guestbook so we know you were here. Take care and be blessed!!

Good evening, friends and family!! The weather is wonderful down here in Durham. It has been in the seventies for the last week or so, and we are loving it! We praise God today for the small things that make us appreciate life, and make us thankful for one more day in the "land of the living".
Jalen is still doing well. He has been having belly aches and a little diarrhea, so we are trying to figure out why. I have a feeling that it is all of the medicine he is on. It is just about time for us to be heading home to Virginia, but the doctors want to be sure that the diarrhea and nausea is not being caused by something more serious before they discharge us. So, please pray that by Friday's clinic appointment, Jalen will be rid of the diarrhea and belly aches...and that nothing serious arises.
We want to take a minute to send our heart-felt condolances and love out to the families of our friends, Ryan Smedley and Amanda Ellis, who passed away this week. We love you guys and will truly miss our angel-friends...our cowboy and our princess...God is taking great care of them. Please pray for God to continue to bring comfort, healing and restoration to the Smedley's and the Ellis's in their time of loss.
We will update again soon! Until then...take care and be blessed! Love ya...

Happy New Year!! We are so blessed to be entering into yet another year! We have to give thanks to the Lord for all that He has brought us through this past year, and for all that He has in store for us in 2005! "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." (Romans 8:18, NKJV) We are thankful to God for the good and the bad. It is through the good times that we gain the faith and strength to go through the bad, and through the bad times that we grow in Him and learn to appreciate the good! God is good all of the time!
Jalen is doing very well...praise the Lord! All of his counts look very good and he is still eating and drinking good. We are looking at being discharged and heading home very soon! Please pray that nothing unexpected arises that would cause us to have to stay longer.
We are having a very nice New Year's day. Nigel and Kevin are here, so we are having fun together. They will be leaving in the morning, early...then we will be back into the routine of Monday, Dr. day...Tuesday, hang out...Wednesday, hang out...etc.... (Not complaining!!!) We don't mind as long as Jalen's progress is coming along well, which it is.
Please lift up our friends, Amanda and Ryan who have not been doing very well, but whom God can still touch and restore! We thank you for all of your prayers and support and we will update again soon! Until next time...take care and be blessed! Love ya!

Tuesday, December 28, 2004 3:01 PM CST

Good afternoon, friends and family! Praise the Lord for every blessing, the greatest of all being His gift of love, Jesus Christ!
I know that its been a while, but my computer has been giving me a fit!! We were discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, Dec.21st and all is going very well with Jalen's progress. All of his blood cultures came back negative, so we still do not know what caused Jalen to get sick last week. But I do know what cause him to get better...thats right, God will heal every ailment, big or small!!
We had a very blessed Christmas. Nigel was able to catch a ride down here with Aunt Barbara and Uncle George who were coming down to visit their son, George on Thursday. We were so happy to finally get him down here!! That same night our friend, Nadia who is a nurse at the clinic came and sat with Nigel and Jalen so I could go out and pick up a few things for them for Christmas. That was so nice of her, because I was not able to get out and get anything because Jalen couldn't go into the stores. She has been such a blessing to us, and the boys absolutely love her! Kevin made it down on Christmas Eve with lots of presents from home! We couldn't have asked for a better Christmas...not because of the presents, but because all is well and we were together! God is sooooo good and we are truly blessed to be here another day and another year!!
Jalen is doing so well. The doctors are still very pleased with his progress, and we are still scheduled to go home in a couple of weeks!! Hallelujah!! We are so excited but at the same time being prayerful that all continues to go well, and no complications arise! We miss everyone so much and cannot wait to see everyone at home. This is the first Christmas that we have ever spent away from home, family and friends and I must admit...I missed that!!
Well, please continue to pray for Jalen and our friends down here in and out of the hospital. I will update soon since I've got everything working again with the computer! Please take care and have a blessed and Happy New Year!!
Love ya!!

We want to send an early Happy Birthday Shout-out to Uncle Calvin!! We hope you have a good one!!

Tuesday, December 21, 2004 9:08 AM CST

Good morning to all!! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! His praise shall continually be in my mouth, because He has done great things for us! Nothing showed up in Jalen's blood cultures and his blood pressure and everything is back to normal, so we are going back to the apartment today...Praise the Lord! I'd rather be bored there than in here!
Jalen is eating and drinking very well...he has even gotten quite a bit of exercise playing basketball in the hallway with some of the other kids. He was a little upset because we are still on isolation due to the positive viral battery test from a few weeks ago, so he couldn't go into any of the lounges and play video games with the other kids. But, we still found things to get into to stay busy.
To be honest, my calendar is at home so I really do not even know what day Jalen is on today...somewhere around 85. We have to go into clinic tomorrow to see the nurse practitioner so they can look Jalen over and check his blood counts and chemistries to make sure all is well.
I thank God that this did not turn out to be any more serious than it was! The doctors were almost positive that the cultures would grow something and at this point say that we may never know what the cause of all of this was. But I know that God knows what it was and he took care of it!!
Anyway, there is nothing else to report right now. I will be sure to keep the page updated so you all know how things are going. Please keep us lifted up as well as our friends here going through. Please say a special prayer for Amanda who is having a rough time, and for Ryan who is still in the hospital going through chemotherapy. Nothing is too big or small for God!
Until next time, take care and be blessed. Have a blessed, Merry Christmas! Love ya!

Hello, friends and family! Sunshine or rain...God is ALWAYS good!! Sorry it has been a while since I last updated, we have had an eventful week(end)! Thursday night Jalen and I had steamed shrimp seasoned with Old Bay for dinner, which is one of Jalen's favorites...or WAS one of Jalen's favorites. About 10 minutes after eating it, Jalen began to throw up and had diarrhea. It lasted for quite a while, and his fever began to rise. I called the doctor on call and we decided that I needed to bring Jalen in because by this point I knew that he had to be dehydrated if nothing else. When we were about to walk out of the apartment door to head to the hospital, Jalen almost fainted, which I must admit, scared me senseless for a few minutes, but I knew what name to call on...JESUS! I ran him to the car and did about 90 mph to the hospital, talking to him and tapping him to make sure he did not close his eyes or fall asleep. So, we got to the unit around 12:30 am and Jalen's blood pressure was dangerously low. His little hands and feet were ice cold. The nurse started pumping lots of fluids in him very fast and they also had to start him on Dopamine to get his blood pressure back up. Blood cultures were drawn to see if the cause of all of this was a bacterial infection of some sort. We were put in a room here on the bone marrow unit, and here we are today in room 5211.
As of yet, none of the cultures have come back positive for any type of bacteria in the blood. So, I am convinced it was the shrimp, until the tests prove differently. Jalen said that he will never eat another steamed shrimp, and he never wants to smell Old Bay again!! The cultures have 72 hours to come back positive. After 72 hours of watching and waiting, if nothing grows then it is assumed that there was no infection. Our 72 hours will be up tonight around midnight. We will get the official results from the doctors in the morning. If the results are negative for infection, I am not sure if we will be discharged right away or if they will want to keep Jalen for an additional day or two. We definitely don't want to be in here for Christmas if we don't have to be. Nigel and Kevin are planning on coming and spending Christmas with us at the apartment and Jalen is really looking forward to that.
I don't think that this episode will affect us coming home on time, since no infection has shown up by now. If it was something he ate and his body is over it and back to normal, then we should still be on track. I will definitely keep you guys updated on what's going on and the results of the tests.
Please continue to pray for Jalen and our friends, Amanda (who is really having a rough time), Ryan, Cortez and Deondra...as well as all of the kids fighting for their lives.
Please have a safe and Merry Christmas! Take care and be blessed!! Love ya!

Sunday, December 12, 2004 9:27 AM CST

Hello, everyone! Praise the Lord for all of His mighty acts and His tender mercies!! Sorry that it has been a whole week since my last update. I have been so busy checking on all of our friends and visiting their pages, that I didn't take the time to update Jalen's. While I am there, I want to ask that everyone please take the time to say a prayer for Ryan and his family. He is back in the hospital and is having a rough time...please take the time to pray for him. Remember, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much"...it's the least that we can do! (James 5:16, KJV) On that note...please continue to pray for Jalen and all of the children fighting sickness and disease. For we know that the victory is in Christ Jesus!
Jalen is doing very well...praise God!! We had another vomitting and diarrhea episode on Tuesday evening, but didn't last long and didn't end us up at the hospital. His temperature was normal and he continued to eat and drink a little so he didn't get dehydrated. We do not know what caused these episodes, but everything is back to normal now - his stool, his eating and drinking, and his stomach is not upset anymore. To God be all of the glory...all that is good and perfect comes from Him! A viral battery test that was done on Jalen a couple of weeks ago did test positive for a cold virus, so he has been placed on isolation at the clinic. This just means that when we go into clinic we go straight into an examination room to avoid contact with the other patients. And when we leave out of the room for any reason, we have to wear a gown, again to protect the other children. Naturally, chest x-rays were done to be sure that the cold did not get into his chest. The x-ray showed that his lungs are clear, so the cold was just in the upper airway (sinus cavity). We will probably be on isolation until we leave here, because there has to be 3 negative viral batteries before he can come off of isolation, and they are done about every 2 weeks...you do the math!! As long as Jalen is doing alright, we don't mind the whole 'isolation' thing. Praise the Lord!
Today is Day 74!!!! Hallelujah...we are getting soooo close! We are hoping to be able to get a weekend home around Christmas time. Just keep praying that all will continue to go well with Jalen and that he will go home when he is supposed to.
We want to give a Happy Birthday shout out to our cousins Lil' Dwight, who turned 18 and thinks he is grown now...and Valerie! Hope you guys had good ones!
Until next time (it will be sooner than later), take care, be blessed and continue to take time to pray for Jalen, Ryan, Amanda and Cortez. Love ya!!

Monday, December 6, 2004 3:23 PM CST

Good afternoon, friends and family! God is good all of the time and all of the time, God is good! We had an eventful weekend! On Saturday, Jalen was complaining that his belly was hurting and burning, which is not unusual because some of his meds cause that to happen. Then he became very sleepy and his temperature went up. Then he got diarrhea. After calling and talking to Dr. Martin, I ended up taking him into the after hours exam room on the bone marrow unit so he could be seen. Dr. Martin ordered stool and blood cultures to be drawn and looked Jalen over really good. Jalen was a bit dehydrated, so he got lots of fluids and a boost of steroids to help him get over whatever this was. Dr. Martin said he thought it might be a virus because there are a couple going around that are very easy to catch...you can get it from just about anywhere. Whatever it was came on too sudden for them to be really concerned about graft vs host disease, which was great to hear. After we got the fluids and some meds to help get rid of the nausea, we were released and got home around 2:45 am. Jalen hasn't thrown up, had diarrhea nor a belly ache since that night which is a blessing!
That was Saturday. Then on Sunday we spent the whole day in the clinic getting platelets and blood, which gave us a chance to catch up on our rest...so we won't complain!
Today was our Doctor day in the clinic and Dr. Martin is still very pleased with Jalen's progress. He said that all of the cultures drawn on Saturday were negative, so it must have been something Jalen ate. Praise the Lord!!! All of his counts are looking good and his meds were decreased some more. We are moving right along, thanks and glory be to God!
Nigel and Kevin were here this weekend for this whole saga, so we had lots of support which was great! I think that helped Jalen feel better having his dad and brother here with all of their energy!!
Well, that about sums up what is going on down here with us right now. We are still content with being bored...its much safer that way!! Please continue to pray for Jalen's progress to continue to go smoothly. Please lift up our friend Ryan and his family for they are going through a rough time...but God's bigger than all of their troubles! Also lift up all of the children down here at Duke who are going through, or about to go through.
Until next time, thanks for stopping by and signing the guestbook. Take care and be blessed. Love ya!

We want to send a Happy Birthday shout-out to our cuz, Lil' Jai!! Hope you had a good one!

Saturday, December 4, 2004 1:19 PM CST

Good afternoon! Today is Day 66 after transplant and God as always is blessing! Jalen is doing very well. He just gets a little bored sometimes, but like the doctor told him, "Bored is good at this point". So, we can take a little boredom! Jalen is still eating well. We haven't been able to go out so he can ride his bike as often as we would like because it is getting a little colder now. I am trying to get him a stationary bike to have here in the apartment so he can get his exercise each day.
His blood counts are still looking very good. He is beginning to make more cells on his own now. We are getting platelets around every 3 or 4 days, and blood every 7 or 8 days.
Nigel and Kevin are coming down today to spend the night. Jalen is really excited about them coming, I'm sure he gets tired of looking at my face 24/7! He misses spending time with his dad and his brother. We cannot wait until Nigel can come and spend Christmas break with us.
We want to send a Happy Birthday shout out to our cousins Chavis and Jerrod! Hope both of you guys had a happy birthday!
I don't have anything else to report right now, so I will go. Unitl next time, take care and be blessed. Please continue to pray for Jalen and our friends down here. Don't forget to sign the guestbook.

Monday, November 29, 2004 6:40 PM CST

Good evening, friends and family! Today is Day 61 after transplant and all is well! Today was a long day in clinic because as I told you before, Mondays are 'Doctor day'. We got to see Dr. Martin today and he is very pleased with Jalen's progress. He decreased more of Jalen's medicine today since everything is going well and Jalen's counts look really good. To God be all of the glory for the wonderful things that He has done, and is doing! Dr. Martin was teasing Jalen about his moustache that has grown as a side effect of the cyclosporine. Jalen was laughing and told Dr. Martin that he likes his moustache! It was cute!
Mom and Nigel came down for Thanksgiving and stayed through the weekend. We really enjoyed the visit and was sad to see them go. Of course we had to have some of Grandma's good cookin' before we would let them leave, so she cooked on Friday...all of Jalen's favorites. We had ham, potato salad, deviled eggs (Jalen calls them 'Jesus eggs'), rolls, scalloped potatoes, green beans, brocolli w/cheese, and pumpkin pie. It was mmmmmmmmm good! Our family back home sent soooo much stuff down with Mom. Food, cleaning supplies...all kinds of stuff. It should definitely get us through until time to come home, and we want to say thank you to all of you. We love you guys sooooo much!
Dr. Martin mentioned today that around Day 80, if all is still going well (which we believe it will be), then they may plan for Jalen to go home for a weekend visit. Isn't that GREAT!! He will be thrilled to be able to step foot in the 'Burg! Please keep praying that all will continue to go well for Jalen and we won't have any setbacks. Please pray for our friends, Ryan, Cortez, Amanda and their families that God will continue to move on their behalves to heal and strenghthen them.
Until next time, take care and be blessed. Don't forget to sign the guestbook! Love ya!

Thursday, November 25, 2004 10:19 AM CST

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! We have sooo much to be thankful for. We are thankful to be blessed with another day of life, for friends and family who love us (and we sure love them), and for every need that God has met and is meeting in our lives! But I have to say that the one thing that we are most thankful for is to know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. I cannot imagine anyone going through what we have been through without knowing Him - knowing Him as a healer, a deliverer, a comforter, a miracle-worker...and so much more! He is our hope when things look 'hopeless'. He is our "rock in a weary land". To sum it up...Jesus is EVERYTHING to us!!!
Jalen is still doing very well. We had to go to clinic yesterday to get a blood transfusion, Jalen's red blood cells were a little low. While we were there Jalen spiked a low-grade fever. The nurse practitioner was alerted and the nurse checked his temperature every ten minutes or so to see if it was going to keep going up. The protocol is if his temperature reaches 101 degrees, then an antibiotic has to be started and he would be admitted to the hospital. So, I'm sitting there like...no, God, please not now. Jalen would be crushed if we have to go into the hospital today! With Nigel and some other family coming down to spend the holiday with us, this would not be good! So, I began to pray and called Mom to begin to pray. I pulled out my sword (The Word of God), and began to speak the Word over Jalen and praise and worship God. The sweetest anointing filled that room, God moved and touched Jalen's body. By the time the nurse came in and took Jalen's temperature again, it was 98.6...PERFECT!!! God is so good, and he is a faithful keeper of his promises! Praise His wonderful name...to Him be all of the glory. The nurse could not beleive it, she just said, "Wow. That praying worked. Jalen you can go!" Hallelujah!!!! I wanted to break out in a praise dance and shout right there!! All I could do was praise and thank God over and over and over again. He is AWESOME!!
All of Jalen's blood counts look very good, and he is still eating and exercising. Today is Day 57 after transplant and everything is going very well...Praise God!!
Well, please continue to pray for Jalen, Ryan, Cortez, Amanda and all of our friends who are fighting. Please sign the guestbook. Take care and have a blessed Thanksgiving!!! Love ya!

Sunday, November 21, 2004 9:15 AM CST

Good morning! Again, its been several days since my last update because, well, there was nothing going on. Jalen is still doing very well, praise God, and we are still visiting the clinic on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Jalen is still eating well and exercising. I am so happy with how well he is doing. He is really trying hard to get stronger and better. His skin has peeling due to the radiation and chemotherapy he received, so he looks...well, a little different. But that is getting better now. He is almost all one complexion again. Jalen is on a medicince called Cyclosporin that helps prevent graft vs. host disease. One of the side effects of the medicine is lots of body hair. Jalen is beginning to grow a unibrow, hair on his face and back. Its not a whole lot, and some of it is sandy colored so you can barely see it, but he looks so cute!
We are on Day 53 after transplant and Jalen is doing everything that the doctors want to see him do - eating, growing cells, pooping, etc. To God be all of the glory, honor and praise! He is beginning to get a bit restless down here, and to talk about home a lot more. I know how he feels, because sometimes I get very lonely and homesick and wish I were there. The way I deal with that is staying busy, staying focused on doing my part to keep Jalen well, and praying. In a situation like this, I have to stay prayed up so that I can stay positive and keep Jalen positive.
We didn't have any visitors this weekend, so it was a bit boring. We had to entertain ourselves, which consisted of reminising about home and talking about what we are going to do when we get back there. We also took walks and rides in the car since the weather has been very nice. Nigel, Mom are coming up this week sometime, for Thanksgiving. Tomorrow is our 'Doctor Day' at the clinic. We will get to see Dr. Martin and go over everything concerning Jalen's progress. Please continue to pray for Jalen and our friend down here fighting for there lives. Don't forget to sign the guestbook. Have a blessed week!

Wednesday, November 17, 2004 3:40 PM CST

Hello, friends and family! Today is Day 49 after transplant and all is well! Today was a 'clinic day'. We spent almost all day in the clinic getting platelets and seeing the nurse practitioner. All of Jalen's labs (blood work) look really good and we thank God for that! There has been so much going on around us. Some of our friends down here aren't doing so well right now so I ask that you pray for them. (Cortez, Ryan, Mikey and Ian) It is only by the grace and mercy of God that Jalen is doing so well and we are sure to give Him ALL of the glory. Its not by might, nor power...but by the Spirit of the Lord! The only part that I have played in Jalen's success is keeping him covered in prayer and with the Word of God. I plead the blood and apply the stripes of Jesus to his body daily!! The bottom line is...we are in battle and it is constant warfare. Sometimes we get tired, but our rest is Almighty God...our refuge is in the 'shadow of the Almighty'. We owe God everything...He has been and is everything to us!!
Jalen has been riding his bike almost everyday and is looking good! He is getting stronger and stronger each and everyday. I am so proud of him for trying so hard, even when he really doesn't feel like it. I know its mostly because he misses home so much and doesn't want any reason to be here longer than his 100th day. Sometimes he will bring up something funny that someone did back home and we will crack up laughing. Just the other day, he was talking about our cousin, Tyya and how she runs around like a chicken with its head cut off, with so much energy, and as soon as she sits down she falls asleep! It was so funny because we both could picture Tyya running around, talking all fast...then asleep! We were laughing so hard about that! We miss everyone at home and cannot wait to see them all again!
Well, thats all to report right now. Please continue to pray for Jalen and our friends. Don't forget to sign the guestbook! Oh, and I made a correction in the address to the apartment below. I had the zip code wrong. Love all of you...take care and be blessed!

Sunday, November 14, 2004 11:00 AM CST

Good morning! I know that it has been several days since I last updated the page, but this has been a very uneventful week, which is definitely a good thing. Jalen is still doing very well. His blood counts are looking beautiful. We finally had to get red blood cells this week for the first time since being discharged from the hospital. He has to get platelets every six days or so. So, he is definitely beginning to hold his own and make some cells on his own. Because of his progress, our clinic schedule has been changed to Monday, Wednesday, Friday instead of everyday. This is so much better because we get our weekends off to sleep in and just lounge around the house for a change. This also frees up some of our days during the week to get other things done instead of sitting in clinic all day.
We had visitors this weekend. Nigel and Kevin came down and spent the weekend, which meant nonstop video games for 2 days. (...about drove me cRaZy!) Grandma Lynn and Boo came down and spent the day on Saturday which was also very nice. That gave me and Mom a chance to go out for a little while and catch up on things. While Grandma Lynn was down here, Jalen got the taste for some sausage gravy and biscuits, which just happens to be one of Grandma's specialties. That's all he had to say, and dinner was on the table...sausage gravy and biscuits! So, thats two weekends in a row that Jalen has had some of (one of his) grandma's cookin'. He is on a roll...I don't know who we will call on next weekend...even though one of Aunt Sarah's homemade poundcakes is sounding awfully good right now!! :)
Well, thats all that has been going on around here. Please continue to pray for Jalen's recovery to be a smooth and speedy one. Also pray for our friends Ryan, Cortez and Amanda that God will touch each of them and bring forth healing and restoration of every physical ability in Jesus's name!! Praise the Lord!
Don't forget to sign the guestbook! Have a blessed week and take care. Love ya!

Hello, friends! Its been a few days since I last updated the webpage because Jalen and I have been busy with clinic appointments and trying to get settled into the apartment. Today is Day 33 and everything is going great. Jalen's white blood cell count is at 7.0 (7,000) which is good, it is still increasing daily. We had our big day in clinic today (Mondays). This is the day that Jalen is seen by his primary doctor, Dr. Martin, to go over everything and answer any questions. Dr. Martin is still very pleased with Jalen's progress. We are almost at the point where Jalen will not have to go to the clinic everyday, but will have to go every couple of days. We praise God everyday for Jalen's progress and strengthening us to endure until the end!
Nigel is doing much better. He was discharged from UVA on Sunday with 'crunches' (as he would call them) and a walker. He is still on an antibiotic to take care of the infection. He stayed home from school today because he had a fever last night and is still slow getting around. Hopefully he will be back to school on Wednesday. (There is no school tomorrow - Election Day.) Thanks to everyone who called to check on Nigel and everyone who visited him. I really appreciate all of the concern. It made me feel so much better since I could not be there for him.
Thanks to everyone for the prayers, calls, cards and support. We appreciate you guys and hope that all is well with you and your families also. Please continue to pray for Jalen's progress and for all of our friends who are going through.
Don't forget to sign the guestbook! Take care and be blessed! Talk to ya soon!

Hello, everyone! We finally made it out of there...ahead of schedule actually! Praise the Lord!! Dr. Martin said that Jalen is about 2 weeks ahead of schedule, which is truly a work of God! We are in the apartment now, and let me tell you...it wasn't a very restful night for me nor Jalen. We are so used to the IV pumps beeping, nurses shuffling, whispers in the hallway...it was way too quiet! But we like it here on "the outside"! Today was a long and busy day. We were up early doing meds. and then we were in clinic all day long being seen by the doctor and receiving platelets, so hopefully tomorrow will be a shorter day in clinic. We got the results back from the FISH test, and Jalen's cells are 99onor cells, which is WONDERFUL!!! This means that the stem cells he received have engrafted and have basically have become "his". We are soooo grateful to the Lord for all of this! He is definitely moving on our behalf, and a lot of it is due to your petitions to him for us! We cannot thank you enough!
Yesterday was a day filled with bittersweet news! The good news was Jalen was being discharged, set free! The bad news came from home when my mother called and told me that Nigel was being taken to UVA because of a quickly spreading infection in his leg. The cause of the infection at this time is unknown, but the MRI done at UVA showed that the infection had spread to the knee joint and caused two pus pockets in his knee and one in his thigh. He underwent a procedure last night to drain the pus pockets and flush the sites. He is expected to be discharged in a couple of days on crutches, but no more football this season. When I received the news, I felt like the breath was being sucked out of my lungs. All I could do was immediately go into prayer and ask the Lord to put a stop to this madness!! I wanted to quickly clone myself and be here and there at the same time! If you are a parent, you know how I feel. I just want to kiss my Nigel, rub his head and let him know that its alright, and this too shall pass. I cannot wait to be able to be home with both of my boys again!
Please continue to pray for my family and for our friends who are still fighting for their lives. Thanks for all of your support, prayers and encouragement! Don't forget to sign the guestbook and the new address is posted below for anyone who wants it. Take care and be blessed!!!!!

Hello, everyone! Today is Day 28 after transplant and things couldn't be better! Jalen's white blood cell count is up to 2.5 (2,500) today and his neutrophil count is 1800. This is all excellent news, and even better...Jalen is being discharged from the hospital tomorrow! Yeeeaaaahhh! Praise the Lord, and to Him be all of the glory! Today has been the best day Jalen has had in a long while. He actually smiled today...and more than once!!:-) Christina (Cortez's mom) went out with me today to stock the apartment with groceries and other items that we will need. The apartment is really nice and spacious. We made sure that there was enough room and a bed for Nigel when he comes to visit. We are soooo excited about being "on the outside"!
I am hoping that someone will make it down to visit this weekend so they can bring Jalen's bike and his safety gear, so he can ride and get some exercise. There is the perfect spot in front of the apartment for him to ride. We will still have to visit the clinic everyday to have his blood counts checked and for Jalen to be seen by the doctor. But, we will take that over inpatient anyday!
We feel so blessed to be doing so well, and want to thank everyone for their prayers and support. Special thanks to our friends at H'burg Peds. for the box of goodies, we are enjoying them. You guys have been great! Please continue to pray for Jalen and all of our friends who are fighting for their lives. Don't forget to sign the guestbook and take the time to check out Jalen's quilt.
Talk to you soon...from "the outside". Take care and be blessed!

Good afternoon, friends! God is soooo good...all of the time! We are on Day 27 after transplant and everything just keeps getting better!! Jalen's white blood cell count is up to 2.2 (2,200) today and his neutrophil count is 1,694 which is GREAT! He is doing so well that we are looking at being discharged from the hospital and going into the apartment on Thursday or Friday of this week. Jalen gets to leave the hospital today on a 2 hour pass. So, he gets to get some fresh air and some exercise outside today for the first time in a month. Needless to say, he is in a very good mood today!! The doctors are still very pleased with his progress. They sent away a blood sample to make sure that the cells that are growing are donor cells and not his own. Dr. Martin said that he is almost sure that they are donor cells, because Jalen's cells most likely would not have grown back this fast. So, we are encouraged by that fact and by the fact that God has got this thing under control and we trust that we will receive nothing less than a GOOD report! I had classes yesterday to prepare me for administering Jalen's meds at home and all of the do's and don't's. Everything seemed pretty simple and I am sure that we will do just fine!
I have to say that all of the medical staff here at Duke are absolutely wonderful! We feel so safe and comfortable in their care, and they are so caring and understanding ... especially when Jalen is in one of his moods!! UVA was a tough act to follow, but everyone has been great. We know that God sent us to the right place!
Nigel and Kevin came in this weekend and Jalen had a good time playing video games and visiting with his brother. He was so sad when they had to leave, but I explained to him that we will be in the apartment soon and Nigel can come and spend the night with us! That helped a little.
Thanks to everyone for the prayers, cards, and all of the support! Thanks to Aunt Cathy, Lauren, Cassie and Jarrod and friends for all of the cards...that was a GOOD day!! Please continue to pray for Jalen and all of our friends who are fighting for their lives. I will post the new address as soon as we get into the apartment. Take care and be blessed!!

Saturday, October 23, 2004 2:05 PM CDT

Good afternoon, everyone! Praise God for another beautiful day! Jalen is doing wonderfully! His white blood cell count is up to 1.0 (1000) today, and this is the second consecutive day that his neutrophil count is over 500. So, we will talk about going to the apartment towards the end of next week! We are so excited about how God is blessing Jalen and making him stronger each and every day!! We are trying to make the transition of changing his meds over from IV to oral at this point, to get ready for discharge. Some of the meds like the GCS-F (stimulating growth factor) I will still have to give Jalen via IV at the apartment, which won't be hard at all. I'll have to hook it up to his central line to administer.
Nigel and Kevin are coming today, so Jalen is very excited. He's had his breakfast, bath and his morning walk so that he will be ready for hours of X-Box when Nigel gets here! I talked to Nigel on the phone this morning and his dad was just not moving fast enough for him! He was ready last night! I'm sure that we will have a very nice visit!
Everything is going very well at this point. Jalen, as always, looks and feels very good and the doctors are very pleased with his progress. We want to thank everyone for the cards, pictures, books and prayers! I am going to have sooo much stuff to pack up this week!! I will post the address to the apartment as soon as I get it. Please continue to pray for Jalen's progress as well as for our friends in need of a special touch from God...Ian, Amanda and Ryan. As always...take care and be blessed!

Friday, October 15, 2004 9:13 AM CDT

Good Morning! It is Day 15 after transplant, and what a wonderful day it is! Jalen is doing very well. His white blood cell count is back up to 0.2 (200) today and things are looking good. He is still trying to scratch his little hands and feet off. But we won't complain about that because its a sign of engraftment. The itchy, red hands and feet, sporadic low-grade fevers, bone and joint aches...these are all symptoms that are treated, but welcomed because they let us know that those good cells are busy growing and Jalen is getting stronger! Praise the Lord!
Jalen is still doing a good job walking everyday. I can tell he feels better now because I don't have to beg or nag him to walk. He is doing it at his own free will now! (He probably got tired of the lectures and speeches on why it is so important!)
Jalen is very excited that his dad is coming today to spend the weekend with him. Jalen has big plans for the two of them. (Kevin has no idea...!) I am going home for a couple of days to get lots of hugs and a kisses from Nigel! I am really looking forward to that! This will be Jalen's opportunity to stay in bed all day eating Fuity Pebbles cereal and playing Playstation 2 in his Spider Man pajamas. And no one had better say anything about it or Kevin will tell them, "He doesn't have to do anything he doesn't feel like doing...he's alright!" LOL! Thats how it is when Dad comes to town! And, Jalen needs that this weekend. I know that they will have a ball!
Well, there is nothing else to tell! I hope that all is going well with you guys. Thanks for all of the prayer and support. Please continue to lift us and our friends here up in prayer. Thanks for all of the cards...Jalen LOVES receiving mail!! Don't forget to sign the guestbook! Love ya and be blessed!

Wednesday, October 13, 2004 10:01 AM CDT

Greetings, friends and family! Praise God for his grace and mercy that is new every morning!
Jalen's white blood cell count was 0.1 today, which is down from yesterday. It is normal for the count to see-saw before it shoots up, so we are not alarmed by this. We know that engraftment is taking place because Jalen's hands and feet are red and itchy, his muscles and bones are achy, and he is running a low grade fever off and on. These are all signs of engraftment, so we know that those cells are growing and are about to take off! We are not discouraged in the least bit. If you have been following the web page from the beginning then you know that Jalen's counts have always teased us a little before sky-rocketing up.
Other than being a little irritable and achy, Jalen is doing pretty good. He is eating very well, so the nutritionist cut back on his TPN, which is nutrition given through IV. Usually kids do not have an appetite at this point, but Jalen is an exception! He is consuming enough calories on his own, so he doesn't need as many calories through IV.
Kevin is coming this weekend and Jalen is very excited about that. I am going to go home to take a break and visit Nigel. This will be a nice break for Jalen and me. I know he is ready to get rid of me for a minute. He knows his dad is all about having fun, so he cannot wait to see him. He'll probably get a lot of walking done when his dad gets here, which is great!
Well, there is really nothing else to report right now. Please continue to pray for Jalen, Ian, Amanda and the rest of the children here. We appreciate the cards, please keep them coming. Jalen could use the encouragement! Don't forget to sign the guestbook! Love ya. Take care and be blessed!

Tuesday, October 12, 2004 11:09 AM CDT

Good morning, guys! I am coming again with lots of good news! First of all, Jesus is still Lord and remains on the throne!!! (Thats the best news you will hear all day!) Besides that...or I should say, because of that, Jalen's white blood cells have begun to grow, and we are only on Day 13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Yea!!!!! We are so excited here! It is way early for this to happen, but his white blood cell counts are up to 0.2 (which is about 200). The doctors and nurses are really excited. Dr. Martin came in this morning to share the good news and say how impressed he is. We really want to see 0.3 tomorrow, because three consecutive days of increasing numbers makes it official. But, I know in my heart of hearts that it is already official! Jalen is showing other signs of engraftment also. His little hands and feet are really itchy and red. God is sooooo good...thats all I can say. Its only by His power and His grace, and the strength He has given Jalen, that Jalen has done so well. We stand in awe of Him...He is truly an awesome God!! We give thanks and praise to Him daily for everything that He has done, is doing, and is going to do.
The mucositis has eased up a little. Jalen doesn't have to use his "pain button" as much now. The narcotics have caused his bowels to slow down, so he is getting medicine to help him to go to the bathroom. His appetite has GROWN, and he is putting it in way faster than his body can get rid of it!! He is in really good spirits, though the steroids make him very moody! Yesterday he was in such a bad mood that I felt sorry for the poor nurse that had to take care of him! I told her, it is definitely the steroids, because thats not my J.J. And he felt so bad after his mood got better, he apologized to his nurse and to me. (of course, we forgave him! :-) I explained to him that anyone in his situation would get irritated sometimes and its alright. I'll still put up with him, even if no one else can stand to!! He is so funny!
We had lots of visitors this past weekend, which was great!
Mom, Nigel and Boo came down on Saturday night, then our cousins, Juan and Tashon came on Sunday! We had a good time visiting and we even got to spend Grandma Lynn's birthday with her! Tashon and the boys had a good time playing games in the room and they were all sad when it was time to go.
Well, thats what is going on down here right now. We are just taking each day as it comes. (which is easier than looking forward to the 100th day) We want to thank everyone who has sent cards, we really appreciate you! We still have room on the walls for more, so please keep them coming! (the address is below) Thanks for all of the prayers and encouragement! Please continue to pray that there will be no complications in Jalen's recovery. Also please pray for a healing miracle for our friends, Ian and Amanda! Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to sign the guestbook! Love ya!

Hello, friends and family! Today is Day 8 after transplant and overall things are going very well. The mucositis has made its way to Jalen's belly, so they have had to increase his pain medicine to keep him comfortable. I don't believe it will last very long.(The mucositis, that is.) His mouth and throat are looking very good and he is eating like a horse!!! He has gained about 3 pounds in the last few days! His white blood cell count is still at zero, so keep praying for those cells to grow, grow, grow!!! We still have not reached the average time for cells to begin to grow, so we are still on track!
Jalen has been walking his little buns off! Yesterday he walked 12 laps in about 10 minutes, which is GREAT!! He is filling that necklace up fast! I tell you, sometimes I can't even keep up with him walking around these halls. I'm like, "...Jalen, um...hun...can...you...please...wait up!" But I love to see him go.
School has been going very well. The teachers here are very nice. If Jalen is not feeling well, they will still come in and read to Jalen, just so he still gets his instruction time in each day.
Jalen has been missing home an awful lot lately. He really misses his brother, Nigel. He's been crying for him the last couple of nights and I feel so sad that they cannot be toghether right now. But, praise God that all will go well down here with Jalen's recovery and we will be home on our 100th day, and no later!!! I explained to Jalen that for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we will be out of the hospital and in an apartment and Nigel can come and spend the holidays down here with us. That made him feel a little bit better.
We are still decorating Jalen's room with cards and letters from friends and family. Jalen's face just lights up like a light bulb when the nurses bring mail to his room! It really makes his day to receive things in the mail! So, please keep the cards and letters coming! We miss and love you guys. Take care and be blessed!

Greetings, everyone!! It is Day 5 after transplant and I've only got good news to report! Jalen is doing fabulous! The doctors are impressed with the way Jalen is looking and feeling. The mucositis has gotten a lot better and Jalen is eating, drinking and talking again! He hasn't had to use his pain pump as much either. God is truly showing himself strong on our behalf! Thanks for all of the prayers! We can feel and see them working. To God be all of the glory!
Of course there is no white blood cell count to report to you guys yet. That part usually takes at least a couple of weeks. Jalen has been receiving platelets and red blood cells to keep those counts where they should be until they begin to come back on their own. All of this is completely normal and to be expected at this point.
Jalen is feeling really good today and even got out of the room and walked laps twice already! All together, he has walked 12 laps today, which is GREAT!!! He has a necklace with footprint charms on it. He receives the footprint charms when he gets out and walks! He is working hard trying to fill up the whole necklace so that he can start on another one. So far, he has about 8 footprints! Go, Jalen....!!!
Thats all there is to report on Jalen's progress right now! Everything is going very well!!! We want to wish Nekia a very Happy Birthday on tomorrow, the 5th. I won't tell how old she is!!! :-) Thank you to everyone who has sent cards to Jalen to help decorate his room! We still have plenty of room, so please keep showering Jalen with cards and letters. He loves reading them and finding the perfect spot to hang them. The address here at Duke Hospital is below on this page.
Thanks again for all of your thoughts, prayers and support! We miss and love you all. God bless!

Friday, October 1, 2004 8:13 PM CDT

Greetings, everyone! It is Day 2 after transplant and everything is going well overall. Nothing is happening that is not commonplace at this point. Jalen has developed mucositis, which causes sores in the mouth, throat and stomach and can continue througout the digestive tract. His little mouth and throat are really sore and he hasn't been eating, drinking, or talking much. This usually lasts about 2 weeks before it starts to get better. And when the white blood cell count begins to rise, it will take care of itself, for there isn't anything that they can give to cure it. Jalen has still been getting out of the room to walk his laps in the hallway. Sometimes I have to push the issue and he gives me "the look". You know the one he gives that sends the message, "you are about two seconds from getting it...and you know what IT is"! Yeah...that look. He also has school everyday where the teacher comes to his room and does work that Mrs. Kyger sent for him and other 3rd grade stuff as well. He is doing an excellent job with his school work. (He even gets homework!!)
He is hooked up to a special IV pump that is giving him pain meds continuously for the mucositis. He can also push a button and receive extra if he needs it. The nurses and doctors try very hard to make him comfortable and pain-free. (They do a wonderful job!)
Jalen has a best buddy named Jeff who is a student at Duke. He comes to visit Jalen at least twice a week to play games, watch TV, or just to sit and keep him company for a couple of hours. That gives me a little break to get things done, or just to get some fresh air. Jeff is a Seventy-sixers fan just like Jalen, and likes Allen Iverson! The first time he came he wore an Iverson jersey and he and Jalen have been best buds ever since!
That is really all that is going on right now! We sure do miss everyone at home, especially Nigel. We can't wait until he can come and visit again. Jalen wants to send a special hello to: Nigel, Daddy, TJ, and Mrs. Kyger's class!
Please continue to lift Jalen up in prayer and all of the children here in 5200 for complete healing. Don't forget to sign the guestbook and to send your cards and letters to help me decorate Jalen's room. We've got plenty of wall space to fill up! Jalen would love to hear from you! The address is below, on this page! Love ya...and be blessed!

Thursday, September 30, 2004 6:02 PM CDT

Hello, everyone! The bone marrow transplant yesterday went great! Jalen did beautifully! Mom, Tiffany and Boo came down for the big event. We anointed Jalen, had prayer and praise and worship, and watched the stem cells infuse into his line. Just to clear up a common misunderstanding, the process does not require surgery. The stem cells (cord blood) come up in a bag from the lab and looks like blood. They hook it up to his IV line and infuse it in. Just like a blood transfusion. It is as simple as that. The only reaction Jalen had was high blood pressure, which is perfectly normal during the procedure. He received medicine to fix that and all was well! Nurse Jenise stayed in the room the entire time and took vital signs every five minutes. It was a very anticipated and exciting time for us! Afterwards, Jalen was a bit sleepy from the benadryl, and took and short nap. It was more like a power nap because afterwards, he walked laps and shot some hoops in the hallway. I love to see him moving and getting his exercise. It is very important at this point that he stay active and exercise his lungs and other muscles. As you all know, Jalen is a very muscular kid and we want to keep those muscles intact.
As I watched Jalen walking down the hall last night I was in awe of his strenghth...his walk, the way he carries himself, his mind, his determination to do whatever he sets his mind to (and to do it well). Everything about him is so strong! He is absolutely amazing! All that's good and perfect comes from above...and Jalen is just that, good and perfect in my eyes!
Transplant day is Day 0, and today is Day 1. So now we are counting the days and watching for those cells to grow, grow, grow! The average time for engraftment to take place is around 25 days or so, but we know Jalen is not an average kid, so we'll see!
Please continue to pray for Jalen and for those cells to get growing and for all of our friends here fighting. The goal is 100onor cells, we don't want to see anymore of Jalen's cells. Also lift up our friends Amanda and Ian that God would touch them in a big and special way, and their families. Don't forget to sign the guestbook so we know that you stopped by.
We are in the process of decorating Jalen's room and are in need of some decorations! Hanging cards and letters from our friends is a perfect way to decorate. So, I want to encourage all of you to send your cards and letters to Jalen at the address below. I appreciate your help, and Jalen will truly be uplifted by the gesture! Thanks again.
Love you guys, be blessed!

Monday, September 27, 2004 4:23 PM CDT

Good afternoon! This is the day that the Lord has made, and we will rejoice and be glad in it! (Ps. 118:24) In the midst of a storm or when all is calm, we will not cease to give Him all of the glory, honor and praise...for He has done, and is doing GREAT things!
Jalen had a rough night last night. That ATG is definitely the nastiest medicine that we have encountered! If I could find the horse, I'd give him a taste of his own medicine! (Ha, ha, ha!) The side effects Jalen experienced were vomitting, rash, high fever, chills, and aching. He vomited so much last night that he busted a blood vessel in his eye, and it is blood-shot red! Needless to say, we didn't get very much rest last night. His fever finally broke around 1 o'clock this afternoon, just to start the ATG all over again at 2:30 p.m.! We are told that the side effects are less severe on the second and third dose! I hope so! He is doing very well right now. After his fever broke, he began to eat, drink and talk again. He looks like himself again! To God be the glory, because I prayed all night last night that God would ease his pain and make him comfortable! Its so hard not being able to take away all of his pain and suffering. But, he is such a strong and brave boy, he just bears down and takes it like a champ!!
His white blood cell count is almost down to zero now, which is what we want before transplant day. He had to have a blood and a platelet transfusion this morning because they were both low, which is normal at this point after radiation and chemotherapy. Everything is going well and as planned! God is good! Sometimes we get lost in our circumstances and fail to see that God is still working on our behalf. Yes, Jalen is going through a rough trial right now, but the biggest blessing is God has kept him and is with him through it all! He has not deserted us, and as long as we know He is present, we can continue to endure, press and remain in His peace - the peace that passes all understanding.
Please continue to lift us up in prayer and all of our friends here who are going through the same ordeal. Don't forget to sign the guestbook and check out Jalen's quilt by clicking on the link below. Thanks again to everyone who has supported us through fundraisers, donations, and prayer. We appreciate all of you!

Hello, everyone! I am sorry that I have not updated the page in a while, I was having computer issues and am now back in business! Everything is going very well and as planned. Jalen is such a trooper and an awesome gift from God! He finished up his week of radiation on yesterday with no complications, other than a little nausea. They expected him to be very fatigued, nauseous, and skin burned...but not Jalen. His skin looks and feels as smooth as a baby's bottom! And as soon as Kevin and Nigel got into town, his energy level was off of the scale! Kevin went to radiation with Jalen on Wednesday afternoon and Jalen had to show him how brave and courageous he is! He did a fantastic job holding very still and helping the technicians out with the props and so forth. Buddy (AC) came Thursday to visit and took Nigel and Jalen to the driving range to hit golf balls. They really enjoyed that and cannot wait to do it again! Nigel and Kevin left yesterday afternoon after bringing Jalen and me to the hospital for Jalen to be admitted. So, Jalen's been chilling out here in the room enjoying the Playstation 2 that they've got in here. They have almost every game you could imagine and every movie also! Jalen started his 3 days of chemotherapy this morning. It is given once a day and takes an hour to run. Other than a belly ache, he hasn't had any side affects from the chemo.
He starts another medicine tomorrow called ATG which is a horse serum. (Yes, it really is derived from horses raised just for this purpose!) This medicine, according to the doctor, is the "meanest" stuff that Jalen will have to take during this process. Some of the expected side affects are fever, chills, vomitting, diarrhea. He has to take this for 3 days, and then the big day is on Wednesday! That is the day of the transplant! We are really looking forward to that day because then we can start watching those new cells grow and start counting the days! Grow, cells, Grow.....day 1, 2, 3...day 100! Then we are on our way home!!!
Thanks to everyone for all of the support - moral, financial, and spiritual (prayers)! We appreciate all of you, and pray special blessings over you always! We miss all of you and hope to see you guys real soon! Please don't forget to sign the guestbook and check out Jalen's quilt by clicking on the link below!
Love ya!

Hello, everyone! Just wanted to check in and let everyone know how everything is going down here. We are still busy with appointments and everything is going great!...still on schedule! Jalen had his central line placed today and has been really sleepy from the anesthesia. He is in wonderful spirits! He will be admitted to the hospital on his last day of radiation, the 24th and will have the transplant on the 29th. And then we wait for the new cells to grow! Please be praying and don't forget to sign the guestbook!
We'll be in touch!

Saturday, September 11, 2004 4:51 PM CDT

Hello, everyone! We only have good news to bring you! Everything is going great and we are moving along right on schedule. We have completed one week of "pre-transplant work-up" appointments, and have one more week to go. Jalen begins total body irradiation on Monday, Sept. 20th. He has to do a week of radiation and will be admitted to the hospital on Friday, the 24th, his last day of radiation. At that point he will complete three days of chemotherapy, will rest one day, then will receive the bone marrow transplant on Wednesday, the 29th!!! Then its count-down time! Jalen has to be in the hospital until engraftment takes place and he has no infections. "Engraftment" is when the donor stem cells begin to grow! The goal is 100onor cells, so please keep that lifted up in prayer! If...I mean, WHEN all goes well and all of Jalen's blood work and everything looks good, we will be able to return home 100 days after transplant. (We have to be here at least 100 days after transplant.) We miss you, Virginia...there is no place like HOME!!
Jalen has been doing absolutely wonderful! He is so brave and so patient in spite of all that is going on. He did cry for the first time since we've been here yesterday. We were riding in the car and he put his head down and silently began to cry. Mom noticed his tears and asked what was the matter. He said he wants his daddy...and he wants him NOW! Thank God his dad will be coming down very soon to visit us.
We got to see our friends from UVA, Ryan and his mom, Kim yesterday at the hospital. They both look awesome and Ryan is doing great. God is so GOOD!! They invited us over to their place to visit, so we have something to do, and someone to hang out with when Mom and Nigel go home. We will miss them so much!
Well, until next time. Continue to pray for Jalen's procedure and progress and all of the other children going through the same. Don't forget to sign the guestbook and leave Jalen some mail. There is a link below on the page that will allow you to look at Jalen's quilt that our friends have taken the time to put together. It is so cool...take a look!

Hello, visitors! We finally made it! We arrived in Durham, NC last night, and Jalen's first appointment was this morning. He began his transplant work-up today. That just consists of a lot of tests to make sure everything is looking and working well before the transplant is performed. Jayne, the nurse coordinator gave us a tour of the transplant unit and the clinic today, and I don't think that we will have any problems making ourselves at home for the short period of time that we will be here. Everybody here is very nice and gave us such a warm welcome. Jalen and I really appreciated that!
The hotel that we are staying in is sooo nice. Jalen and Nigel had room service last night ($$$$ for the first and last time $$$$), and are in the pool expending all of that energy right now. Mom and Nigel came down with us to help us get settled in and to help Jalen feel at ease for the fist couple of days. They will be leaving on Sunday to go back to Virginia so Nigel can get back to school and football! Jalen and I cannot wait until Dad can come and visit us, we miss him so much already. We always have such a good time when he is around!
We spent all morning in the clinic getting labs drawn, chest x-ray, EKG, etc. They had to draw so much blood that I thought I might have to carry Jalen to the car, but of course that didn't phase him! We also have more appointments in the morning, so we will definitely be busy for these next couple of weeks. Jalen is expected to be admitted to Duke Hospital on Sept. 24th, his last day of total body radiation.
Well that is all that is going on right now. Please continue to lift us up in prayer and all of our friends who are going through the same. Don't forget to sign the guestbook! See ya later.

Hello again, visitors! Jalen started school and is having a blast in Mrs. Kyger's 3rd grade class. He is doing very well. We finally got the call from Duke and Jalen has to be down there for his first appointment on Tuesday, September 7th. That means he gets to spend his birthday and Labor day weekend at home with his friends and family! Yeaaaa! By the way, his birthday is Saturday, August 28th. I think we will have a cookout, cake and ice-cream at home with some of Jalen's friends and family.
The benefit concert raised $986.00 and was a complete success. We had such a good time, we are all ready to do it again! Thanks again to everyone who participated and to those who gave for Jalen's cause. God bless you over and again!
That is all I have to share at this point, but please continue to lift Jalen up in prayer, and don't forget to sign the guestbook!
Toodles!

Hello, visitors! I have only good news to report! Jalen started school today and is doing great! His bone marrow aspiry results were normal and he is still in remission! Hallelujah! He is feeling really well and is still full of energy. His blood counts look beautiful and his lip is fully healed! Praise God!
The benefit gospel concert was a complete success and lots of fun! Special thanks and lots of hugs to my Godmommy Tish for doing such a wonderful job organizing that event! Also, thanks to all of the groups that participated...it was truly a blessing!
I have been in contact with Duke and they are ready for us. We don't have an appointment date yet, but that is in the works now. We should expect to be down there within the next week or so.
Please continue to pray that all will continue to go well and that there will be no complications. I will keep everyone posted. Don't forget to sign the guestbook!

Hello, everyone! Well, we thought our stays at UVA had come to an end, but here we are once again on 7 Central, room 7140. Jalen was playing baseball with some friends on Friday. One of the kids hit the ball and slung the bat which hit Jalen in the mouth. After recovering from what I thought was cardiac arrest, I rushed him to the emergency room at RMH where he received 6 stitches in his upper lip. He then spiked a fever in the wee hours of the morning and we ended up here at UVA. We cannot explain the fever, but blood cultures show no infection and his lip also looks fine. (other than the swelling, which is to be expected) He has not had a fever in almost 48 hours, so we are expected to go home either today or tomorrow. Jalen told the Dr. he has to go b/c he has things to do - he has plans. (...and we miss our Nigel!) I hope those plans involve indoor activities!
Jalen is still slightly neutropenic, though his counts are on the rise and looking good. Thank God that his platelet count was high when he had this accident! A bone marrow check is scheduled for Thursday to make sure he is still in remission. We are still waiting for an appointment date from Duke. We should hear something this week. They seem to be having a bit of a bed crunch down there, so please be praying that Jalen will get down there soon.
Until next time, be praying for all children battling this horrible disease, and be blessed!
Don't forget about the benefit gospel concert on Sat., Aug. 21st at 12pm at Immanuel Mennonite Church on Kelley Street. See you there!

Wednesday, August 11, 2004 6:23 PM CDT

Hello, everyone! Everything is going very well and according to plan. Jalen is still at home and his blood counts are recovering beautifully! He is scheduled to have another bone marrow check on the 20th to make sure that he is still in remission. If everything still looks good, (which it will...thank God), then he will be ready to head down to Duke so we can get this show on the road! He is out fishing with his Nigel, his cousins, and Granddad Bro right now. I hope they catch lots of fish! Jalen has not slowed down one bit, he is constantly looking for something to get into. I think he is going extra hard to make up for lost time! Go, Jalen, Go!

FYI.... there will be a benefit gospel concert for Jalen on August 21st, at 12pm at Immanuel Mennonite Church on Kelley Street. There will be wonderful praise and worship and gospel music, food, and lots of fun! Please try to join us!
Please continue check the website and keep us lifted up in prayer! Don't forget to sign the guestbook!

Hello, everyone! Jalen came home from the hospital yesterday and is doing very well. Once again, he had no problems with the chemotherapy. He was so upset while in the hospital because he could not be disconnected from the IV pump because the chemotherapy required him to receive fluids continously. So, he couldn't really get around and play and socialize like he usually does. Therefore, I couldn't get him to leave the room. Now I can't get him to come inside the house. He's been going non-stop ever since we arrived home! Believe me, I am not complaining! I love to see him being active and doing all of the things that he loves to do like riding his bike, his electric scooter, and playing basketball outside with the other kids. Nigel was happy to have us back at home because he said that he was soooooo bored while we were away! We were especially glad to see him and to be able to spend some quality time together.
At this point, we are waiting for Jalen's counts to go down and recover. Then we will be ready to head down to Duke to begin the transplant process. When we receive a date to go to Duke, we will let you know!
Thanks to our friends at Spotwood who sent Jalen lots of cool stuff! Jalen is enjoying the coloring books and the stickers! Hugs and kisses to all of you!

Saturday, July 31, 2004 12:00 pm CDT

Hello, visitors! I am Jameesa, Jalen's mother and I will be taking on the task of keeping Jalen's page updated from now on. This is to keep everyone updated on a daily basis on Jalen's treatment. Thank you, Melanie for a beautiful job on the webpage. We love you!
We are at UVA finishing up the last round of chemotherapy Jalen will receive before being sent to Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) for a bone marrow transplant. We've been told by the doctors that an almost perfect blood cord match has been found for Jalen. God is soooo amazing! He is AWESOME! Jalen's bone marrow has to recover from this chemo before he will be sent to Duke, so hopefully that won't take too long. We are anxious to go and get everything over with, so Jalen can return to his normal routine at home. He will certainly miss all of his family at home and his friends at Spotswood! We will definitely keep in touch with everyone!
Jalen is doing very well with this chemotherapy, as usual! (Thanks be to God) He only has a couple of days left, he will be going home on Monday.
Until next time, keep praying and believing for Jalen's complete healing!
Blessings!

JALEN IS STILL DOING REALLY,WELL.HE HAS NOT GOTTEN SICK OFF OF THE CHEMO. HE IS TO THE POINT OF HIS CHEMO WHERE HE HAS NO WHITE BLOOD CELLS LEFT IN HIM. SO THAT MEANS HE HAS NO IMMUNE SYSTEM. HE IS LIMITED TO VISITORS SO HE IS REALLY MISSING HIS FAMILY . HE GETS BORED,WISHING HIS BROTHER WAS THERE WITH HIM. HE LOVES BALLOONS,THAT IS WHY I DECORATED HIS WEB WITH THEM. HE IS A VERY STRONG LITTLE BOY AND HAS A TERRIFIC IMAGINATION. HE WAS MAKING UP RAP SONGS ABOUT HIS DADDY. THEY ARE CHECKING HIS BONE MARROW EVERY WEEK AND BELIEVE IT IS PROGRESSING. PLEASE KEEP HIM IN YOUR PRAYERS.

This is our first entry on Jalen. he is 6 year old little boy that was just diagnosed with acute mylegenous leukemia. He has already had 4 days of chemotherapy and has it 24hrs a day and then off of it for 6 days. He started is second dose of 4 days today. Luckily he didnt get sick off the first set. The hospital let him come home for a few days but his platlets drop and he had to return to the hospital on sunday. He is a strong little boy and has a great attitude. He loves to play video games, watch movies and play sports. He is dearly loved by all his family and friends. Please kep him in your prayers. I will write again when we hear more. Due to the chemo breaking down his immune system we cant see him often because of him catching a cold or get sick from our germs. By the way if anyone wonders who is writing this iam his grandfather Bro's girlfriend Melanie.
