Hey, Jalen! I just read about you being a Steelers fan. My husband is a huge, huge, huge Steelers fan too. We only watched the first quarter of the game last week because we had to be at a party for some friends from church. Toward the end of the game, I found Tom outside on the cell phone with a friend who was watching the game. I'm glad he didn't watch it because he does have a tendency to get very LOUD when he watches his team. You don't jump around when you watch the game do you? ;-) (I think I know the answer to that one!)

Glad that you are home and will be able to watch the game this weekend with other fans. Maybe Nigel will take a liking to Pittsburgh?

Before I begin this letter, I'll have to remind you of who I am. You will remember me as Miss Monger, your Head Start teacher during the 2000-2001 school year. I'm now Mrs. Reeder, and I teach reading. Isn't that funny? God has a wonderful sense of humor.

Two weeks ago, my husband and I were in Harrisonburg at the Potter's House Worship Center. This is our "home church" since we have been worshipping there for several years. However, we had to move down toward the beach so that my husband could go to college to become a chef. It is always good to be back home at the Potter's House when we can get there.

In the announcements, I saw your name on the prayer list for healing. I couldn't believe that your name was on the list! I found Linda Roy to ask if that was the Jalen Williams from Spotswood Elementary.

Jalen, I am standing in agreement with you that God is doing a magnificent healing in your body. He has such special plans for you. I knew that even when you were five years old and in my classroom. Continue to rest in God's arms because He's holding you close!

Jalen - I work @ Merck with your mother, though I do not know her well. Wanted you to know that you are in excellent hands with the Duke docs. My daughter had a brain tumor 7 years ago and had surgery at Duke. She loved the hospital and the doctors and nurses who took care of her and we continue to go back to Duke every 3-4 months for checkups. Hey guys. I'm sitting here in computer science with absolutely nothing to do! I'm starting to really dislike this class. I'm at least a day ahead of the entire class always! In physics today we had a catapult project. The teacher gave us 15 popsicle sticks and an unlimited amount of string. I knew I could make something that could shoot a clay ball but the catch was that it had to go 40 ft! Well guess what.... mine went 18! LOL!!! I did better that most of the kids though. I'm supposed to be coming down that way this week, but I haven't talked to your Granny (Lynn) yet to find out for sure. Well stay strong, and I'll see you soon.

Sounds like you are constantly busy with hospital stuff.
I have brought in four caterpillars that are starting to make crystalis. One of them turned into it within 15 minutes! There is now one that has been hanging upside down for five hours and hasn't done anything! The first one should be a monarch in 10 days(Sept. 25) I wondered if anyone there could still find you a monarch caterpillar for you to watch?? They are still out on the milkweed.
We had picture day this week and I wonder how many kids made faces instead of smiling. I am busy doing errands for Mrs. Kyger and Mrs.Haney. have a good day today. Mrs. King

She went through treatment and acheived remission, unfortunatly she relapsed in December, 2003 and needed a transplant. "The Strength of an Egg"

Parents of children with cancer are often referred to or viewed as having "strength like a rock". Albeit flattering it is not quite true. It is more like the strength of an egg. An egg you ask? Yes!
If you'll think about it, you'll see my point.

An egg has a polished, smooth outer appearance, with no cracks or weak spots visible. It seems almost inconceivable that the inside might not be
as smooth or solid.

Most children, at some point, are shown the famous egg trick. An egg set at just the right angle can withstand enormous amounts of pressure and cannot be cracked or broken. Yet the same egg, tapped gently at an even
slightly different angle, will break. The contents, once so neatly concealed, will come spilling out. The no-longer perfect shell will be crushed. It looks so fragile that it seems inconceivable that it ever held any strength.

A rock, on the other hand is solid all the way through. To break it is almost impossible. If you succeed, you will find that there is nothing inside but more rock. It takes a lot more than pure hardness to hold the "HAND OF HOPE".

Parents of children with cancer are not solid all the way through. We hurt, we fear, we cry, we hope. It takes a very careful balancing act to keep the shell from being shattered. "Balancing an egg" while running a household,
going for doctors' visits and hospital stays, keeping the family together, and holding on to the constantly unraveling ties of your sanity can be very tricky indeed!

Occasionally, the angle will be off and the shell will break, shattering hope and the neatly secured appearances of a truly fragile existence. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, though, parents of children with cancer will pick
themselves up and put themselves back together again.

I was with Grandpa A.C for the Thanksgiving Holiday and he said that you went home on Saturday I think. I am glad that you got to go home. We are all still praying that you will have a full recovery. Hi Jalen. I heard from you grandpa A.C. that you did get to come home on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Your homepage said that you didn't get to come home yet. Hi Jalen,Jamessa,Kevin & Nigel. I have written this week so this is my first entry. I am glad the Jalen is feeling a little better. Maybe by the time he gets this message he will have been able to eat something. Your Grandpa A.C. came up to visit with me this week. He took me out to play some golf. I really stink at that game. I am going to practice before he comes to play again. He is really a professional at it though. I am sure if he hasn't seen you since he got back to Virginia that he will be there soon to visit you. There a lots of people keeping you all lifted in prayer. So keep fighting the good fight and keep your mind stayed on Jesus. He will get you all through this. Hi Jalen- I already wrote this once and somehow lost it, so if you see two entries from us it is because I am not very good with computers. It looks like you and my son spent your summers the same way, except on different ends of the country! Jeremy is 9 years old and was diagnosed with AML M4 on May 30 of this year. We live in Idaho. He is not scheduled for a bone marrow transplant either. He didn't have a match, so we are trying the chemo only route for now. So far, so good- he is in remission and we are finishing the protocol. We are going to Salt Lake to start our last round of chemo next week. From your journal entries, it sounds as if you and Jerm are on the same or similiar treatment protocols. Jeremy has been pretty mad about the whole deal, but like you, is very brave and is facing all of this head on. I know that it is hard for him some days to deal with all the changes in his life, it was really tough when school started and he couldn't go. I can't ever find the words to make those times better for him- he just gets through it and keeps going. Know that our thoughts are so with you! He is a very nice young man, and I thought it very considerate of him to want to do that. When he asked earlier this month, Jalen was going through treatment and AC told me that he would not be able to have visitors. If Jalen can now have visitors, I am sure that he will come down.
