Its been 5 years since you left me
Life has never been the same
You touch my heart in a special way
I still see your face
I still see your smile
I hear your voice
I hear you sing
I will always miss you
But I have so many wonderful memories
That I will always treasure
You gave me a wonderful gift
The gift of you
Even though it was for such a short time
You taught me so much
My love is with you every day
Happy heavenly birthday, Kaleo
My very special FRIEND

Dear Sandra, John, Keanu, and Kanoe,
I look at the little bunny sitting near my computer each day when I sit down and remember the spunky little man that Kaleo was while he was here with us. I imagine the other angels in heaven smiling as Kaleo's spirit comes shining through. His time here on earth was brief, but he will always be remembered and his spirit encourages many of us every day. May the knowledge that your family is in the thoughts and prayers of many and that Kaleo is no longer suffering, bring some measure of comfort to all of you.
With love and prayers, Ruth

Dear Sandra, John, Keanu and Kanoe,
I have wanted to share these thoughts with you for almost a year. I can't think of a better time than on Kaleo's Heavenly Birthday. I don't know who actually wrote these, but I wish I had.
Forever in Our Hearts!
We thought of you with Love today, but that is nothing new. We thought of you yesterday, and days before that, too. We think of you in silence, we speak your name with pride, and we relive our memories of living side by side. Your memory is our keepsake with which we'll never part. God has you in his keeping - we have you in our hearts. Our hearts still ache in sadness, and secret tears still flow, what it meant to lose you, no one will ever know.
Kaleo, I want you to know you have taught me not to take advantage of the time we have with the people we love. I do not miss any opportunities to let my nephew Trent and niece Lauren know how much I love them or how much they mean to me. Thank you so much for this. I will always be here for your family. I miss you!
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers always, Aunty Kristine

Dear John, Sandra, Keanu and Kanoe,

It's sad not to have Kaleo here, but we can all remember the times we've shared with him and be assured that he is flying with all the angels in heaven. He will always be our little prince charming and our bravest hero. It's good that Lauryn & Laurissa will always have that memory of him in their hearts and minds.

You guys are a special family to us and being able to see Keanu & Kanoe grow up will help us imagine what Kaleo might've been like too. That's going to be a blast to see! We know Kaleo will always have a strong influence on his brother and sister. Just watching Kanoe in front of our TV enacting the entire Cinderella movie gave us just a hint that Kaleo's spirit is with her. And the way Keanu has opened up to us is another sign of Kaleo's blessings.

We love you all and are glad to have you in our lives. God bless you today and always. Keep Kaleo's memory alive through the love, strength, and laughter you give to us.

Love always,
Lance, Tish, Lauryn & Laurissa

Sandra and Family,
My thoughts are with you during these difficult times. I often think about you (mostly when I think about Tristan and how much joy he brings to my life). I know the pain must often seem unbearable. I really can't imagine it. I am sure you are right about Kaleo talking to Kanoe and Keanu in some way. Believe that your black crow may be his way of making contact. Take comfort in the fact that he is okay, and has not left you completely.

Sandra and John,
When you asked me to say a few words for Kaleo, I told you I would be honored. The truth is the honor is in having had a chance to know your son. Kaleo is a remarkable little boy who touches the hearts of everyone here on a daily basis.
When we see a beautiful sunrise - that is Kaleo.
When we feel the comfort of a favorite blanket - that is Kaleo.
When we hear the voice of the calm sea - that is Kaleo Kana’i.
Kaleo has taught each one of us how to laugh in spite of ourselves and how to cry without shame. He has given us smiles on gray, cloudy days and brought us peace in our darkest hours. He has taught me what it means to be real. No one here could argue the fact that this precious angel was taken from us too soon. No one can possibly say that the pain he has had to endure is fair. But through it all, this extraordinary gift from God has shown us the meaning of bravery, strength and determination. Kaleo has shown us how to be real.

John, Sandra, Keanu, Kanoe - look around at the people who have gathered here today to help you in your hours of deepest sorrow. We are all here because we love Kaleo Kana’i and because we love you. We will be your strength when you have none. We will hold you up when you fall. When you feel that you have nothing more to give - we will be there for you to lean on.
We are your family. We will stand behind you as you learn how to face the world again. We will walk in front of you to help guide you back into the light. Most importantly, we will walk beside you as we journey together through the memories of Kaleo’s love.
Thank you for sharing your precious child with us. I know that right now, he is up with the angels smiling down on us, protecting us, and waiting to make us laugh again.

Kaleo Kana’i, please know that we all love you and miss you. I ask you to wait for us as someday, we will all be together again. Until then, good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Sandra, John, Keanu, and Kanoe,
these words mean as much to Lance and me today as they did one year ago. We are still beside you as you continue to make your way on this path of pain and sadness. We are praying for you always and I know, as sure as I am sitting here writing this, that someday we will all be together again celebrating life for an eternity.
We love you all,
Stephanie and Lance

Dear Sandra and John,
I just wanted to add the message I sent to the McCullough family today. Since it is about both Kaleo and Kyla, I wanted you to see it.
Thinking of you!

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2005 01:11 AM, CST
Dear McCullough Family,
As the anniversary of another one of our young friend's deaths is upon us, I have been thinking more about how brightly both Kaleo and Kyla shone. They both were the center of attention without trying to be, took their roles of big sister, and big brother, very seriously, and had a complete handle on the important things in life. They have both taught us so much and are so missed by thousands of people. I think most of us wish that we had just one more day... but that was not in the plan. As their families, you are both the luckiest and the most devastated because you knew them the best, and got to experience their passion for life, and their love for you the most. What an amazing blessing to have such stars in your lives.
You are in our thoughts and prayers everyday.
Love and peace to you all,
Jennifer

Dear Shadron Family,
As I think back to last year and the wonderful slide show you blessed us with at the service, I remember what a bright and shining star Kaleo is. He was always brave and strong and the center of attention without trying to be. He endured more than most of us have to in a lifetime and yet had such a strong spirit and kept up his sense of humor and his dancing feet throughout it all. I envision him dancing around with such joy, using his brilliance to become everyone's friend, because he finally won. The tumors died with his physical body, but his spirit is with us forever. I just wish we could celebrate with him. :) I wish we could somehow ease the pain a little, but I know that is not possible.
We love you,
Jennifer Schroeder

Shadron's,
Kaleo, as I sit at my computer at home I look up on the shelf and see the scruffy looking rabbit I selected at your memorial service. It had meaning to me as a representation of you; rough and tough, ready to go at a moments notice, warm, funny, giving, and always bringing a smile to everyone.

When I need some inspiration to talk smack to auntie Stephanie about Rowe's fantasy football league, I just think about your mischievous, impish ways and it comes to me. Maybe when we all get to heaven you can give her that "Stink Face" you owe her.

John, Sandra, Keanu, and Kanoe, know that we all love you and your family and consider you part of our family as well.

I can't believe it has been almost a year. Spencer brought up Kaleo this summer, which really surprised me. He said "Are we going to that boys house for his birthday this year. You know mom the one with the pool and cars". Kaleo touched so many people and I am so glad to hear that his characteristics are coming through in Kanoe. I strongly believe that the crow is very special and Kaleo will continue to watch over you. You are in our thoughts.

Sandra, John, Keanu, Kanoe,
When Eric Clapton's 4 year old son passed away, he wrote this song for him. As the one year anniversary of Kaleo's passing approaches, remember that your friends and family are still here beside you to help you carry on. We will never leave you on this journey and someday, we will all be together again for an eternity where there will be no tears or pain. Only laughter and joy. We love you
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Dear John, Sandra, Keanu, and Kanoe,
Lately, the girls have been asking all kinds of questions about heaven and God. Katie said that she was afraid of God because he just takes people. She wanted him to just come down here to visit and then to "go home' and leave her family and friends here. I thought that was a good idea. When we talked with her about heaven, she said, "Well I think Heaven would be o.k. because of all the people I already know are there to meet me."
We miss Kaleo and all the funny stories you share with us. He is an amazing spirit in our lives.

ya kno, i also remembered, that in 7th grade, on the first day of school, i was kind of scred to go to a new school and a new district..and right when i walked into your room, i knew right then that this year was gonna be the best ever (i thought u were the prettiest and youngest teacher i've ever seen!!) and then as i got to kno u more, i had gotten to love u more and more..and i knew that u were my fave teacher..EVER..and then of course, u announced u were pregnant and i was EXCITED!! i mean, u were already pregnant, but i dint want to be rude and ask! But i had told u that i loved babies and little kids to it was exciting!! and then came the time when u were going to have Kanoe! i just couldn't wait til you'd come back to school so i cud see it! i remember giving u a pair of adidas shoes to Kanoe too! hehe.. what a beautiful baby! i loved her! looks just like her mother!! :-) and then i DEF. remember the days u brought in Kaleo..And remember? i IMMEDIATELY fell in love with that little boy. Even tho he was really shy and kept hitting me! LOL and then u brought him in on the last day of 7th grade and i was in charge of babysitting that lil tyke! (By the way, i loved every mintue of it!) and David mcViegh met him adn stuff...which was really funny..he thought i was crazy for spending my whole day with him! And while we were on the field, i felt like his big sister! i remember @ some points he called me "sissy" and when we were eating ice cream, he got it all over himself! i loved taking care of him that day..i wouldn't it trade it for anything else..i remember just running back and forth the field and he was just so little! and so cute! and seriously, EVERYONE thought i was crazy for volunteering to take care of a little kid on such a nice and fun day! but i loved it and i had loads of fun..i never forgot about that day one single bit..his little hand in my hand..it was just so...great..and his hugs were always loving and warm..and so tight! and the pictures i got of him and my friends..and the cutest thing i remember was when we were all sitting in the shade and i was lying down and Kaleo was layin on top of me! i was so cute! i was layin on my friend Austonn's knee...LoL..aww man...i really loved that day! and i really loved having u as a teacher..i just wished i could've had u longer and spent more time with Kaleo...but for that one day i spent with him...i just couldn't feel any happier with any kid..i really did fall in love with that little boy..o0o! and his smile!! it lit up the whole room everytime he smiled! well, my thoughts and prayers will ALAYS be with you..b cuz for that one day...i felt so connected to him and that makes me feel connected to the family as well...love u always! <3 Michelle

Dear Family -
We met you all at a BBQ at the Kuenzly's this past summer and had the opportunity to meet little Kaleo. He touched our heart with his shinning smile. He was a very sweet boy, we admired how respectful he was to his elders and have thought of him often. We are very sorry to hear that he has passed.

Our prayers are with you.

I'm extremly sorry to hear about your loss,my heart was filled with pain as the anoncment was read over the intercom, i know that no matter how many "im sorry to hear...." notes you get or how many flowers are sent to your house it dosent seem to make you feel any better because right now all you mind can think bout is you son, life is extremly painfull and everyones hearts begin to hurt after awhile, but the one thing we all need to remember is that we have each other to lean on and remember you have a great family to lean on here at Rowe middle school everyone here loves you and will do anything to help.

Our daughter Onalee is in the same class as Keanu. Our hearts were saddened as she came home with the news on Monday. She has prayed for you faithfully every night and you are in our thoughts and prayers daily. I read through your journal pages today. What a strong family you are, God has really been with you! May the Lord continue to use you through this journey you have been through. You and Kaleo have been an ispiration to many.
We wish we could be there on Saturday, but Onalee has a Bible quizzing tournament that she is in. Our love and prayers to your family!

I work w/ you at Rowe but rarely get an opportunity to see you. I've heard such wonderful things about you and your son from Lori and the others. I wish I would have had the pleasure of meeting Kaleo. My heart and sympathy reaches out to you. I just felt the need to write because I too have a 5 year old full of life and energy. After hearing about your sadness, I have gained a renewed appreciation for life and my family. I'm very sorry for your loss but know that Kaleo is resting peacefully with a new healed body in heaven. When you are able to come back to Rowe, know that you have wonderful colleagues who love and care about you and your family. What a great bunch of people to lean on for support.

I remember the first day I heard Sandra talking about her boys. We were in new teacher training before school had started. Kaleo was just a baby and you were in search of a new home. I remember thinking how awesome to have a new baby seeing the excitement in Sandra's face. Since I got to know Kaleo I learned how very special he was. i have so many unforgettable memories of Kaleo, my whole family and i do. when i think of him, i remember when we went to chucky cheese's and i could barely keep up with him :) as he ran from game to game. i also remember when i babysit kaleo and keanu and they locked me out of the house and wouldn't let me in until i told them the correct password ("blues clues"). i'll never forget kaleo's "stinkface" and other WWE moves. most of all I won't forget his cute little rascal smile. he will be missed by so many, but it is comforting to know that he is up above and watching over us all.

Dear the love ones of kaleo
hello I know there is nothing to help you in this time of loss.I understand that it is hard to lose someone and I hope that you think about the good times instead of the bad.Everyone feels bad about something they may have done or said but if you remember that you and him had fun and think about all the good times. When Mr.Becker announced that your son passed away he himself was in tears as long with many of people.Even though I never met him I was heartbroken we heard so much and we prayed for him but things happen for a reason and even though no one wanted him to go God had a good reason to take him.We at Rowe Middle School love you and miss you and your son

Dear Shadron's,
we r so sorry to hear about kaleo. When we heard Mr. Becker on the intercom this morning we all were almost crying. We know what it's like to loose someone special but their really never gone. They will always be in your hearts and in your memory. He was so sweet when he would sing "baby got back" to us over the phone. We will never forget the days when kaleo would come to work with Mrs. Shadron and he would be a little shy but he always had a smile on his face. sometimes even if he didn`t feel up to it he would always make us laugh. Kaleo is always in our prayers and in our hearts.

Love you alwayz, Kallie and Kristen

Kaleo was definitely a fighter. He will be remembered and loved, always. In such a short time he has touched many lives--I am glad that you got to spend the time you did with him. With no doubt, he is watching over all of you now. You are in my prayers and thoughts.

Love to all of you,

Another angel takes flight.

My deepest, most sincere sympathy and condolences to each and every one of you!! Kaleo was a fighter, there is no doubt about that! He is now pain free, free to fly in the Heavens and watch over all of you!
We lost our precious Pam on Oct. 7, 2003, so I know what you are going through. There are no words that can ease the pain.

The worst thing that can happen to a parent is to lose a child. It feels like someone ripped your heart out. You go from the unbelievable to the unbearable.

Kaleo is in a good place now and I'm sure Pam is with him. She just loved children so much.

I would just like to share a saying that was on the card my wife Diane picked out, and we bought for Pam:

If you were a star
That wasn’t expected back
In the universe
For a thousand years,
I’d wait.

If you were the sky
And everyone went inside
When you got sad
And started to rain,
I’d stay.

And if you were a peach
And the world decided to get rid of all peaches,
I’d pick you up,
Put you in my pocket…

AND KEEP YOU……..FOREVER.

I would also like to share, with you and your family, a poem that was put on Pam’s website:
God's Garden

God looked around His garden
And found an empty place
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face

He put His arms around you
And lifted you to rest
God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best

He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb
So He closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered "Peace Be Thine."

It breaks our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

Below is a poem that we have on a plaque dedicated to Pam:

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly, in death
we do the same… It broke our
hearts to lose you, you did not go
alone; for part of us went with you,
the day God called you home… You
left us peaceful memories, your love
is still our guide, and though we
cannot see you, you are always at our
side… Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same;
but as God calls us one by one,
The Chain will link again.

You are all in our prayers. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Hey Sweetie Pie,
I am so glad to hear that you went to see Shark Tale. I hear it is a great movie. You can tell me all about it the next time I see you. We'll have to go and see the new Sponge Bob movie. I know how much you love that show. Thanks for letting me make pumpkins with you the other night. I had a good time and Uncle Lancey-Pants had a blast chasing sister around trying to keep her out of trouble. (Don't tell him I told you - but he is afraid of sister! I think she could take him!) Hi Kaleo! Just checking in to see how you're doing & it sounds like your still the tough guy we all know & adore. I just got back from Italy & had to tell you that I actually saw your WWE wrestlers on Italian TV!! They were broadcasting from Washington, DC too. (Even though the announcers were speaking Italian, I think I got the gist of it all.)
Love to you & your family! Auntie Vicki

Kaleo,

I hope you had a good first day of school. I sure liked kindergarten. I remember my teacher playing the piano and singing to us. I liked our snack of gram crackers and milk. After that we would take a nap on our mats.

Hi Kaleo,

I'm sure you don't remember me. (I worked with your mom for a couple of years.) I sure remember you! You make quite an impression...good, of course.

You look so cool with your smooth head. The boys in my class (4th grade) think the smooth look is really, really cool. They work hard to look 1/2 as good as you.

Did Kindy live up to your hopes? Did you like your teacher? Do you have friends in your class? I hope the answer is yes to all 3. If its not is is OK to say so.

Try and take those vitamins-ask your mom about the gumball and gummy bear ones. Much more fun even when your feeling yucky.

I keep you and your family in my prayers.

Much love to you all!

Shardrons,

It was great seeing all of you at the pool party at Daun's place. I really enjoyed seeing everyone and their little keikis. The kids are growing so fast! Kaleo is a trooper. Very kolohe and full of energy. He is heaven sent. Hope your visit back home was memorable as well as fun, especially the heat, sunshine, little tradewinds and of course being surrounded by the love and support of family and friends. I think the kids had enough of the beaches and swimming in general with the exception of Kanoe. She is a tita (just like mom). Funny how our parents always told us that our children will be just like us in three folds...We are definitly in trouble!!
