Hi Kim and Nick!, thanks for the message. Sorry we missed you at the block party, but we were just getting back from Philly that day. Good luck at preschool!, I will be enrolling Grace later this fall. Her stem cells won't engraft until the end of Sept (she gets them back on Sept 6) and then the first week of October is her "disease assesment" (What a horrible term!!) all of her scans and bone marrow test. Then we will determine her next phase of treatment. Thanks for the prayers and good thoughts, and please know we are doing the same for you. By the way, your landscaping looks good!! Ours will be starting next weekend (Finally!!!!)

I checked on your site because you visited Bridget's site recently. I haven't read your whole journal, but I saw your most recent entry about the port. Bridget never had a central line, but started with a port right away. She still screams when they access it, but not because it hurts, more because she doesn't like it when they tape the access needle to her skin. We're pleased with it, especially that she can still bathe and swim in the pool (when she's not neutropenic, that is). We'll be thinking of you.

Just wanted to let you know that you are in our thoughts everyday. I was reading over your last update and laughing the other day. Well, Alexis started maintenance on Monday with 15mg prednisone 2xday and well let's just say I am not laughing any more. I didn't realize that it really only takes 1 dose to start to see some of the irritability and only 3 doses to see the "out of body" experiences that she has along with the increased appetite. I think we are up to 3 bags of popcorn with extra butter today and it is only 6:00pm.

Hey...We know how crazy those little Nicky's can be, we got one of our own, only he isn't on steroids, his big brother is!!!! 28 straight days of decadron, tomorrow is the last day...yeah! My little Nicky told me "hey mom, I am going to hit you on the head" and he did just that with an IV pole from the home health nurse...It really hurt. Must be in the name??! Hi Nicky And Family First Kim i am so sorry nicholas is having such a rough time with the steroids meguire is just being cranky and eating like crazy he looks like a chubby bubby again and they tell me he is going to have to up his dose a little because his GVHD is flaring up a little so instead of lowering his dose i get to increase he is on 7mg twice a day. Nicky sweetie, I know you want to get this horrible sickness mess over, but please, don't take all of your medicine at once silly boy!! I suppose kids will be kids though. Once, when I was about 4 or 5, I dug through my Grandma's purse and gave my poor little brother some of her high blood pressure medicine. :( oops I was in some BIG trouble, let me tell you!! Grandma had to call the EMTs and poor Zach was whisked away to the hospital. Thankfully though, he was ok and has since grown big and strong, just like you will. I'm sorry to hear you were all so sick. If it makes you feel any better, I was in the same boat for over a week. It was the sickest I've been in ages, and in fact, I'm still a bit stuffy. I do have good news though--I'm headed back to school in the fall!! **sigh** (of relief) As much as I love waitressing (snicker,snicker) I will be happy to get back to school. Call me crazy, but I MISS homework!!! I used to be a biology major, but I'm switching my major to education, so I can work with little ones. Maybe your mama will be able to give me a few pointers. I have a hard enough time walking on flat surfaces without falling down. I was walking in a store last week with my boyfriend and some how managed to fall flat on my face. I do mean flat on my face. The floor was completely level and dry as a bone, so I'm not quite sure how it happened. I suppose I some how deserved it since I had just five minutes prior been telling Mark what a horrible driver he was. I have to tell you that I'm so glad you're doing well. It seems like just yesterday, Uncle Mikey was telling me about you being sick. Keep on trucking you little super trooper!! Happy early Valentine's Day to you!!! Hi Nicky i hope you had a great christmas Meguire and his brother Dominick did santa brought them a trampoline for chistmas and they were so excited and of course meguire had to get cars and some mini street bikes of course cause daddy rides a street bike they had to get some also. Well here we are 7 days from disney we can't wait and kim i completely understand the flying thing this is only my second time ever flying and my kids have never been on an airplane so this will be a great experience for all of us. Hi Nicholas, I have been checking your site all year...I don't sign in much but I just had to today to let you know how proud I am of you and your family. You are a big brave boy! My grandson Andrew is just about your age, and he just started LTM, and now you will join him in a long two years of continued treatment, but hopefully with not nearly as many clinic trips or hospital stays. I pray for continued remission and some "normal" kid stuff added to your daily routine.
Kim, I can't imagine what parents go through. I watch my daughter and son-in-law deal with the never ending emotional rollercoaster, and pray for our Lord to continue to provide them with the strength and wisdom to endure. As a grandmother, please know that this bumpy road is very tough watching our children raise a child suffering with cancer. It's a helpless feeling that can't be fullfilled it seems. We had the exact same experience --- last year Kendrie was pushed in a stroller, having been diagnosed only two weeks before that, and would't walk or talk or smile. This year, costume and bucket flying in the breeze, she ran as far ahead as we would let her, whooping and hollering all the way. You're exactly right --- I'll take many, many more Halloweens like this one. :)

I would like to share this story with everyone who reads Nickey's website. It was last July and all the family went to the bowling alley in Bowling Green to celebrate Zach's birthday. The kids bowled and Nickey bowled with Pappy (his Grandfather). Pappy took his turn and bowled leaving 2 pins standing. He was about to roll his second ball, when Nickey decided he wanted to bowl. Even though it was out of turn, Pappy let him bowl. When Nickey rolled his ball, he knocked down the 2 pins that Pappy had missed. He got the spare! We thought that it was so funny that he picked up the pins that Pappy had missed. He's become quite the little bowler!

Hi nicholas sorry you having a rough couple of weeks Meguire is in the hospital now for his 3 days of high dose Methotrexate again, but we should be going home on Monday morning or maybe afternoon. Try not to drive mom too crazy it sounds like she is going a little bit crazy but, not too much. Hopefully next week guire can get his other chemo since he was already delayed a week 1/2 for this chemo. Hi, I just happened upon your site and started to read your story. I, too, have a child with high-risk ALL. She is 17 years old and in the middle of DI #2. She is counting the days until she is on LTM and can trade her broviac in for a port-a-cath. In July, Krysta has also suffered from seizures as a result of chemo. Hi NIcky we all very well know keep all weapons even cars away from our children when they are on steroids as we all know meguire like to throw his cars at the doctors heads when he is on steroids so when they walk in the door we take all cars-weapons away from him HA HA HA. Hi NIcky it was so nice to see you yesterday at the hospital sorry Meguire was being so nasty but,as your mom says blame iton needing the blood. Today he is much better except they failed to tell us at the hospital to give him zofran every 6 hrs we went to an apptmnt this morning and he starts screeming I'm going to throw up so we had to run to the bathroom but i came home and gave him some zofran and he is as good as new. Hey Nicky! Ok, tell your mom that my mom is praying.....but here is the down low on the bacterias...I got them once, 3 different types all at once (and c-diff as a special "cherry" on top!) We did the IV antibiotics and all was well....didnt have to remove my line. We are going to pray for you, that the bacterias are killed off quickly, that you can keep your line, and that God protects you from any side effects.

Nicky, today I got to go to the grocery store, McDonalds, and yesterday to gymnastics. It was the first time in over a year that my paranoid mom let me out in "public" and boy did it feel good. Sounds like you're having a bit of a rough week there Kim. Don't feel too terribly though, I managed to trip in the same hole TWICE this week in our parking lot. As far as the amount of testosterone in your household--I FEEL YOUR PAIN. I live with my boyfriend and his best friend--our cat is even a male. My boyfriend and our roomie are out of state for a few days visiting my future in-laws. So,it's just me and the cat. Believe it or not, I miss them like crazy. Hello Nicky!! I spoke with your Uncle Mikey last night and he said that you're getting some of your hair back!!! He was so excited to be able to see you the other day. Just wanted to send a note saying I am definitely keeping Nicholas in my prayers. Also to let you know that Amanda had seizures 20 days after she was Dx with ALL. She is doing fine now, the seizures only happened that one "long" night; chemo related. It was the scariest thing I have ever witnessed and I am so sorry that you now have those horrible memories that will stay with you forever as well. We too have played the "what if" game. I truly believe it was one of those "Godincidences" for Amanda and now for Nicholas also. (If you would like more details on exactly what treatment was like for the seizures in Amanda's case, just e-mail me.) I'll be watching for updates.

I can totally relate to all that you wrote. I too have started running again and am hoping to run a 1/2 or full marathon next spring. Not sure where yet? Do you know which one you're going to do? I agree that we are all a part of a club that we didn't sign up for, but I read something just after Leah was dx that has really helped me. It said when going through a difficult trial you can choose to just get through it or "get out of it all that you can". I have made that my goal for this journey. I never would have chosen this path, but I'm on it and want it to strengthen me and be an encouragement to others along the way.

Oh man, does your top 10 list ever ring true! During induction, I don't know who gained more weight, me or my dad...but mine came off. I had a "pause and reflect" moment after 100 days with sick blook kind of like you and your mom did after 6 months. It didn't feel right to "celebrate" 100 days of cancer, but it sure felt right to celebrate 100 days of perserverence and 100 days closer to a permanent, meaningful remission! Cheers to your 6 months...may you never have to live through them again.

Plan on some transfusions the last couple of weeks or so (actually, DI is the same as consolidation...so tell your mom to see how you did) My counts dropped in DI#1 the same place as consolidation, needed the transufions at the same spots too. I hope everything is going better for Nick today I know he has been in the hospital the past few days. My now 3 year old who is in remission from neuroblastoma always cracked up about the cotton balls on the diaper. If I get a cotton ball out at home he pulls his pants down. Hi, Kim and Nicholas! You know, that "ice hockey free skate with the players" thing sounds like a LOT of fun! Like you, Kendrie is a little afraid of big stuffed costumed-things. Or at least she used to be. We went to Hershey Park a few years ago, and they have giant candy-things walking around .... Hershey Kisses, Reesee Cups, etc. She wouldn't even pose for a photo with them, unless her dad and I were holding her. Not quite the scrapbook pictures I had in mind, ha! Maybe now that she's a little older, she would do better. Mainly, I'm just glad you got to go and have FUN like that!

I just went back and read all your journal entries. Your mom is pretty funny! I especially liked the part where she apologized to the interstate truckers. I got a speeding ticket a few weeks ago in town, so I've been driving slowly (or actually, driving the REAL speed limit) ever since and I think the truckers are pretty mad at me, too!

Aren't mascots the best. My kids love hockey too, good thing coming from Canada. We got to see an OHL game a couple of weeks ago and having a friend on one of the teams, My son Brendan got the goalie stick signed by all of the Bellville Bulls players. That is SO fun that you got to meet Freddy and Frieda! I think mascots are the coolest! When I was in college at the University of Oregon, I thought about trying out to be the Duck! (who looks just like Donald Duck!) But at 5'1" - I'm a little short for the outfit!!! I'd be a duck with very wrinkled legs! :) But my favorite was the night they would have Mascot Basketball! It was SO cool! They would get all these mascots together - the Duck and our opposing mascot for that night - plus all these mascots from local businesses - like Homer Depot from Home Depot - and the T-mobile cell phone and all sorts of things - and they would play basketball during halftime of the basketball game! It was AWESOME!!! The cellphone doesn't have arms! :)

Hi Kim - my name is Ava and my daughter Maria was diagnosed in October 2002 with ALL. Like Nick, she was high risk because of her white cell count (130,000) and like Nick she is treated in the slow early responder group because her day 7 bone marrow aspiration showed M3 marrow (60% blasts). I believe we are on the same protocol as well. This time last year, Maria was in consolidation and had just finished her cranial radiation. This year, we've just begun maintenance. I know treatment is a long and scary journey. It has always made me feel better, though, to know that we are not alone. I just wanted to send you a note to let you know that you aren't alone either. We have been where you are and we know how it feels. Maria sends Nick a big hug and kiss from across the Atlantic! I hope you all had a merry christmas. Hang in there!!!

Dear Little Nick,
This note is just to tell you that we are thinking of you. My name is Sally, and your daddy works with my son, Mark. Last year you came to my grandson Zachary's birthday party, and I got to meet you and your Dad. I wanted you to know that the children at the school where I teach are all praying for you. Tomorrow is the feast of St. Nicholas, so today our principal announced your name over the loud speaker and we all prayed for you together. Every day in our first grade room we say a special prayer for you. Some of the children told me they are remembering you in their night prayers with their families. Please know that we are all keeping you and Mommy and Daddy in our hearts.

Nicky, I love you and I am praying for a speedy recovery. Dave and Kim, I want you to know that I am here for both of you. Here is a poem that I really liked when I was a young girl. I read it in a book called the House of Tomorrow.

Nicky is my grandson. I'm not sure I can even begin to tell you how tramatic this has been for all of us. While I still have trouble accepting this, I worry about Nicky constantly. And I worry terribly about my daughter--his mother, his father and his big brother.
