Another long awaited update. This one is mostly from Debbie. She has an MRI this coming Friday, the 3rd of October at 3:00 and labwork done at 2:00.
Here is something from her:

"My eyesight is getting worse. As you know, I am already blind in my left eye. I purchased bifocals for my right eye a few months ago and they were perfect. I had great vision. Now, my vision is growing worse and I am trying to get an appointment with the New York State Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped. A person has to be 51 years of age to get in to an eye doctor that specializes in legal blindness, etc. I need to see such an eye doctor, and ,hopefully, after talking to the NYS Commission I can get in for free. Otherwise, like I said, you have to be 51 years of age. My current eye doctor is the one who gave me their phone number.

I would appreciate if you all would pray for me right now. I've always said if I lost anything, I would rather lose my hearing than my eyesight. I have always been a complete 'bookworm'; the thought of not being about to read God's Word, my devotional books, and additional reading (Karen Kingsbury, the Thoenes)is hard. I know God does all things well; there is a 'purpose for everything under the sun'. I don't want to be insensitive to what He is doing in my life; I just want to be clay in His hands so I can be completely molded into what He wants me to be. He has been so, so good to me. He has given me a wonderful family, a wonderful husband and son, and He has been there every single step of the way. I have no complaints!! He's a wonderful Saviour to me! :) There's not much I can do for Him, but one thing I know . . . He has ALL of me! Thank you for your prayers! You all are tops, in my book!"

So there you have it. Please pass the word around. We certainly covet your prayers.
Todd

I have just a little bit more information to share with you. Debbie has found out a few things. Things are stable as far as the brain tumor and cyst are concerned. Things are looking very good there.
The other issue is her sight. She has now been officially diagnosed as legally blind. Not something you really want to hear. But Debbie takes it all in stride. And she wonders why I consider her a hero of mine.
We thank God for everything He has done for Debbie. And we still long to see Him continue to work in her life in many areas. So if you would, please continue to keep her in your prayers. We appreciate them so much.
Todd

It's once again been a while since I've updated Debbie's site. I apologize for that!
Maxine, David, Aunt Marjorie and I just visited her last week. She is doing so great! While there, I took her for her check up MRI. We are waiting to hear the results of that. So please pray for the outcome. We would sincerely appreciate that!
We were in the mall on Saturday. We heard someone calling her name. We turned around to see her brain surgeon! She did not go to him the last brain surgery, so he was asking about it.
John had given Debbie a set of puzzles for Christmas. She asked which one I wanted to do. I chose the 1000 piece one. So we had a lot of fun working on that while we were out there. She and I were the most dedicated to it, I believe. Ha! John did get into it one night, but that was about it! lol
A man that John works with gave the family a Wii for Christmas. You ought to have seen David, John, Kody and I bowling on there. I hurt so bad, but I couldn't resist. Probably shouldn't have done that! But David about beat us all.
We had to leave a day early. We had a snow storm coming in back here in Indiana, so we thought it best to get home.
Another note to pray on. She is starting the disability process. Please pray that it would go smoothly for her. I know from personal experience, it's not an easy thing to get accomplished. So we covet your prayers in this situation. It would be such a blessing just as far as prescription costs are concerned. I won't be specific, but I know they are already in the thousands of dollars for this year alone.
Debbie is truly a hero to me. Each time we go to visit, I come back with so much more respect and admiration for her. I love her so much. I want to see God continue to work in her life. He's done so much for her already. But when it comes to her, I guess I'm a little selfish. I want to see more for her.
We certainly appreciate your prayers!
Todd
P.S. I've added some new photos. I wanted to get pictures of all of us together, but since we left earlier than we had planned, I didn't get that done... So I used what I had to work with... Sort of.... lol

Saturday, December 8, 2007 9:13 PM CST

Hello all. I could say I'm sorry for taking so long in posting again, but then, you get the apology every time. So I'll spare you that one!
Maxine, David and I visited Debbie, John and Kody in October. I think it was October. Pretty sure it was. We spent a week there. Or pretty close to a week. We had a great time. It seemed like the time really flew by while we were there.
While there, some other family from Indiana stopped by while on their way to Maine. Steve and Brenda Stalker, Howard and Francis Lee, Jeremy, Rachel and Derric (Stalker) Schwarz stopped by. That would be David's brother, sister and niece and spouses. We went out to eat with them and then they came back to John and Deb's for some dessert. It was really nice to have them there. It was their first time to see where they live.
We also met John and Deb's new pastor while there. Was nice to meet them.
It seems that once again, Princess has left the flock... And it would appear to be for good this time. She escaped one morning and never returned..
John, Deb and Kody came out to my parents' house for Thanksgiving this past month. It has been a few years since they've been able to come, so it was good to have them. Personally, I think she just missed the carrot salad and my Blueberry Torte.. I believe that is the true reason they came out. Ha..
Another MRI has been scheduled for Debbie in the next couple of months. I wish I could tell you for sure when it is to be, but Debbie did not give me that information. So as soon as I find out, I will let you know!
It will be a while before we get to see them again. Since they came for Thanksgiving, it's not financially feasable to make the trip out here for Christmas. It's very disappointing, but that is the way life is. So, keep them in your prayers. I know Debbie will miss being here. Also, it will be the first Christmas without John's mother. So, please keep the family in your prayers during this time.
That is all I can think of at this time. If I think of anything more, I will let you all know! Thanks for caring about Debbie and John. They mean the world to us. So it means so mucj to us to have you checking in on her!
Todd

When you hear the term "hemorrhaging", you don't think of it in a good way. But when it is used to describe what is happening to a cyst that would cause problems, it's a great thing! And that is exactly what is happening to the cyst growing from the tumor in Debbie's brain! The doctor called her on the fourth and gave her the good news!
The cyst has become smaller, due to this happening. And, as a result, Debbie does not have to have another MRI for another six months! So, as you can imagine, we are elated. She told John she feels like the tumor is on it's way out!
We thank you all so much for your prayers over the past few weeks and months. We would still like for you to remember John and Debbie and their family as they mourn the loss of John's mother. It is never an easy thing with which to deal.
I'll keep posting as things happen!
Todd

Hi! It has once again been a while since I've written. It has been a very busy time. And to tell the truth, not much to be told. Debbie is STILL waiting for the results from her MRI. So, we don't know whether the cyst is still growing or not.
Our county camp was last week. John and Debbie were the singers for the camp. Kody even sang twice! He did a great job! This was his first time. I've gotta say, the boy didn't really need a mic! He definitely has some strong pipes! It was great to have them here for the week.
I do have some sad news to tell. Around two years ago, John's mother Lois was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Her health has rapidly declined. In fact, the doctors cannot believe how fast the disease has taken it's toll.
Today, the family was called in and she passed away this afternoon. While we know she is in a much better place, it is still difficult as humans to let go of a loved one. So, I'm asking you all to keep the family in your prayers. We had wanted to go up and be with them, but I'm not sure that is going to work out.
We certainly appreciate your prayers.

Friday, April 27, 2007 9:31 PM CDT

OK! OK!!! I got the message! Ha! I was told by several at IHC that I needed to update! So, here you go!
Maxine and I have made a return trip to New York. It didn't take long for her to lose something. Had not even got out of Berne! FOUR MILES FROM HOME!!!! She went to the bank, came back to the car and couldn't find her purse. Typical. Yes, the cell phone was in the purse. It's a curse, I tell ya! She left it in the bank.
We arrived last evening around Eleven. Kody and John were in bed, but Deb was up waiting on us.... Sorta.. Had to pound on the door to wake her from her "nap" in the chair.
Was a nice day here. Started to rain this evening tho.. So it appears to have started to cool down again.
Anyway, on to the important things. Debbie is doing really well! Made some killer lemon cooler cookies. Thanks for the recipe, Lenita! She has a few appointments she wants me to tell you about. The biggie is the MRI. It is scheduled for May the 9th at 12:15 PM. Please be in prayer especially on that day for her.
She also has an appointment scheduled in June on the Fourth with an ENT specialist. They have found a cyst growing in her sinuses. So, they want to check that out and make sure it's not anything serious.
This next one is not life threatening, but I think you can understand this one! A tooth has been giving her major pain in the last month. We are going to take her to see the dentist Monday morning. She is praying that it's not root canal time! She has come to the conclusion that if she could live without her head, she would be alright!
In the "interesting" category: Three weeks ago, on a Sunday afternoon, the world came crashing down around them! Actually, it was a car. John and Deb live right next to the church. A son was out teaching his mother how to drive. While turning a corner, she panicked, but was able to dodge a tree, finding the church instead. She plowed right thru the wall, with her front passenger tire finding a resting place (still intact with the car) in John's Sunday School classroom in the basement of the church. If this would have happened in the morning, there is no doubt that his class would have been injured. So we thank God for His protection.
Maxine wanted me to add this wonderful tidbit of information. Our county has a Holiness campmeeting every June. This year, John and Debbie have graciously accepted the invitation to come and be the singers for the camp. We are excited about this and are looking forward to it!
I think that is all I have to tell at this point. Remember the important dates in your prayer. And pass the word along as well!
Todd

Saturday, January 20, 2007 11:17 AM CST

Hey all! I finally have something to post!
Debbie and John finally heard back from the doctor about the MRI! I'll let Debbie tell you in her words.

"I just had to write and tell you that John talked to Dr. Payner's office today, and the doctor told him that my cyst has only grown a quarter of an inch and an MRI will be done again in March. So . . . I'm skipping February for once! I'm ALWAYS in the hospital in February! Wonder if they'll miss me, ha! Oh, well. God IS GOOD . . . ALL THE TIME."

So, in other words, even tho it IS growing, it is growing very slowly. So, this is good news!
Not much else to tell right now. Maxine, David, Marjorie and I are going to go up to visit in February. Kody will be on winter break, so we'll be able to take Deb and Kody and get them out of the house every day. John will have to work, but I'm sure we'll get in as much time with him as possible! I'll be sure to post while we are up there.
Todd

Wednesday, December 27, 2006 9:25 PM CST

Hey all! It's me, TODD!! I'm back, whether you want me or not! I've moved back to Indiana, so I'll have alot of time on my hands to update. That is, if I have things to tell.
Debbie did have an MRI done a couple of weeks ago. The doctor, however, has chosen not to contact her and let her know the results. So, we are impatiently waiting.
Debbie did, however, get some good news. Her pituitary gland has shrunk! That is good news. We are not certain to what extent, but any is good news.
John, Deb, Kody and Princess (Nellie's replacement.... still can't believe they got rid of Nellie) came out for Christmas. They were here for a few days, leaving for home today. It was so good to see them. Although I was soundly beaten by Kody on Mario Kart! That boy can play that game!
As soon as I hear about the report on the MRI, I will certainly let you all know.
Keep praying.
Todd

Thursday, August 17, 2006 7:56 PM CDT

Well, Deb needs your prayers once again.

Deb and John were in Indiana for the first few days of August. While they were here, Deb went to Indy for an MRI.

Once again, she has a cyst that is growing. It is growing slowly, but growing none the less.

She is to come back to Indiana around Christmas time for another MRI. At that time, the Dr's will decide what to do.

Pray. Prayer has moved the hand of God many times on Deb's behalf. So, once again, let's band together and pray, and always pray for God's will to be done.

Sunday, July 9, 2006 7:57 PM CDT

Hello, and once again I am so sorry it has been so long since an update. There really has not been anything to report.

John still says that Deb is in the best condition she has been in for a few years. Her wacked out (sorry Deb!)sense of humor has returned, and she feels good.

The only area of concern is that she still feels tired most of, if not all, the time.

Deb has a Dr's appointment in Indy the Fourth of August. The good news about that is she will be staying in the Hoosier state for the next little while, and will be at Central Friends camp for the whole camp!

So, if you would like to see Deb and give her a personal word of encouragement to her face, come to Camp for a day or so. You can find more info on the camp at this site:
www.centralyearlymeetingoffriends.org

Keep praying for Deb, John and Kody!

Monday, May 8, 2006 8:20 PM CDT

Hey, here is something way more exciting than me posting: Here is a note from the lady herself! Also, we are adding some updated pics, so make sure to visit the photo's page.
___________________________________________________________

Dear Friends and Family, I just want to say a HUGE 'thank you' for all of your sweet and encouraging words you leave on my website. You don't know how uplifted I feel when I click on it and see you've responded! It makes me feel so encouraged!

I've been feeling good since my last surgery this past February 20. Of course, John has told you I don't have much energy, and that's true, but I'm doing well! I've had six brain operations and I'm still alive and well! Thank God for all of His goodness and blessings. They are new every day! He's been extra good to me and I've never had the desire to do without Him.

I'm now praying more earnestly for a healing touch. I know God is more than able to do it, if it is His will. If it's not His will, I know He will continue to carry me through!

Well, I've talked long enough and your eyes are probably wearing out from reading this! You all take care, and I'll be looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Love, Debbie

Wednesday, April 26, 2006 4:35 PM CDT

Hello to all. Deb sent me this picture. We wanted for you all to know what she looks like right now. This picture is of Deb (of course) and of John's mom, Lois Fike.

Monday, April 24, 2006 9:43 PM CDT

I talked to Deb on the phone today. Nothing really to report, other than the fact that she sounded more like her old self, and she said she is feeling fine.

The only complaint she had was that she is totally with out any energy. She feels tired all the time.

Continue to pray that her strength will return, and that things continue to go smoothly.

Tuesday, April 11, 2006 2:31 PM CDT

Sorry that it has taken me so long to do an update. I will try to do better in the future.

Here is the latest info. I talked to Maxine last night and there is some more good news to report. John Fike says that Deb is more like the "old Deb" than he has seen in the last four years. This means that her sense of humor has returned somewhat, and that she is thinking clearly.

The only downside is that Deb seems to have no energy. Her get up and go got up and went.

Continue to pray that things will improve, and that Deb's strength will return.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006 6:56 PM CST

Hello. This is John. Deb has asked me to take over the care and feeding of her site. Todd has moved to Kentucky (insert redneck joke here!) so she figures that it will be easier for me to keep everything up to date.

Deb is back in NY, and doing quite well. Maxine and David came home from there today. They had been there for the past week or so after taking Deb back after her surgery.

This surgery seems to have went very well. The Friday after the procedure, Deb felt as if she had some sight in her right eye. This was good news since she has had no vision in that eye for quite some time.

The care that Deb is receiving in Indiana seems to be a lot better than the care she was getting in NY. No offense to NY, but the Dr's here are really on top of things.

I hope to give you an update here every week. I will be updating the pictures soon also. Check back often. And keep Deb in your prayers. Thanks, John

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 4:42 PM CST

Looks like Debbie will get out of the hospital tomorrow. They had her up and walking today. Seems to be doing really well.
Maxine and David are coming home tonight. David has a doctor appointment tomorrow. Nothing serious. Routine stuff. So they have to be there for that. Not sure when Debbie will be returning to northern Indiana. Probably later this week. She will be staying at her aunt Francis and Uncle Howard's house until then.
Things are looking good!
Todd

Monday, February 20, 2006 7:12 PM CST

Debbie's surgery went very good!!! It was to be a two hour surgery, but it only lasted one hour and forty minutes. The concern was that the scar tissue would make the process of draining the cyst difficult. It did not! There also was little hope of removing any of the tumor. They were able to remove a considerable amount of the tumor. They were not able to remove it all since it is attached to her optic nerve.
In this type of surgery, they usually take some fatty tissue to close up the hole made in the sinus cavity. However, they were able to leave it open. This will enable any fluid that may build up to drain into her sinus cavity. This was a plus as well!
I have to say, she cried when she saw me! And, no, it wasn't because I scared her! I was in the room when John gave her the good news about the surgery. She cried again. She was really sharp mentally even tho she had just come through the surgery. Nothing like the past surgeries she has had.
Thank you for your prayers! They certainly made the difference!
Todd

Saturday, February 18, 2006 2:10 AM CST

Debbie, John and Kody are on their way out to Indiana. They left Friday afternoon and drove part of the way. They were getting a hotel for the night, then they are to come the rest of the way today.
Surgery is scheduled for Monday morning at eight. I'm so glad it has worked out that I will be able to be there for the surgery. Not glad that Debbie has to go through this once again. But, we hope that you will be in prayer for her throughout this weekend as well as Monday during the surgery. It is a very risky one. She could lose her eyesight. Many other things could be affected as well, but we pray that everything will turn out right.
I'll keep you posted on the outcome.
Todd

Wednesday, February 8, 2006 1:07 AM CST

Debbie wrote me a couple of days ago to let me know at what time her surgery was scheduled. She has to be at the hospital in Indianapolis at 6:00 AM. Surgery is scheduled for 8:00 AM. That is to be on Monday, February 20th. We would certainly appreciate your prayers on that day as well as the ones leading up to the surgery.
Thanks
Todd

Monday, January 23, 2006 10:55 AM CST

Just thought I'd let you know that surgery has been scheduled for February 20th. Not sure what time. It will be in Indianapolis at St. Vincent's hospital. Other than that, I don't know anything else. I'll let you know when I know more!
Todd

Friday, January 13, 2006 12:37 AM CST

Ok. I just talked to my mother. The doctors have decided to go up through the nose to remove the cyst. The surgery will take around two hours. She will be in the hospital for just a few days then sent home. Probably to stay with Maxine and David in Indiana for a while.
The surgery will probably take place while Kody is on vacation the week of the nineteenth of February. That is contingent upon whether her eyesight continues to stay the same or deteriorate. If it gets worse, they will work her in earlier than the nineteenth.
That is all I know at this point. Keep praying.
Todd

Tuesday, January 10, 2006 4:15 PM CST

John, Debbie and Kody are headed to Indiana on Thursday. They see the doctors on Friday. They then drive back to New York on Saturday. Talk about a short trip! Or, rather, a long trip in a short amount of time.
Debbie called me today. It looks like she will be having surgery sometime in February. They are hoping to schedule it while Kody is out of school on break towards the end of the month. Debbie said that it looks like they will be going through the nose this time. Only as she can put things, she said: "Well, at least my nose will be cleaned!" Sounds like her, doesn't it!?!
Pray for them as they drive out on Thursday. Also pray about the doctor visit.
Todd

Tuesday, December 20, 2005 9:41 PM CST

Maxine called today. David's brother-in-law, a cancer specialist in Indianapolis, called Debbie today. He has been working with the doctors in Indianapolis on Debbie's case. I think I've mentioned that in the past.
Anyway, he was speaking to one of the doctors, and that doctor does not think it wise to wait to do this procedure. In fact, he wants to see Debbie as soon as possible. He wants to check her eye to see if she is losing anymore sight as well as other things. He feels it is necessary to get right on it.
So, it looks like Debbie and John will be headed out very soon. Don't know when as of yet, but as soon as we do, I'll let you know.
Anyway, please continue to pray that everything is done right and at the right time.
Todd

Monday, December 19, 2005 2:30 PM CST

I know it's been a while, but life has a way of getting very busy....
Debbie wrote and asked me to post the results of the MRI. The cyst has doubled in size. So, they gave her two options. However, the one option evidently is so bad, she won't tell me what it is. So, the only option I know of is this: Wait a couple months (don't know why) then go in and shoot another isotope of radiation into the cyst. That looks like it is what they are going to do.
John and Deb don't get to come home for Christmas this year. John has run out of vacation days at work, so it is just not possible. We are a little... no, very bummed out about that. It just won't be the same. But, life goes on.
Continue to pray.
Todd

Wednesday, November 16, 2005 0:15 AM CST

Debbie wrote me this e-mail today, so I thought I would just copy it and paste it on here for you all to read.

Hey, Todd! How's it going? We're doing fine here, even the dog! Believe it or not, we have a new dog. It's name is 'Princess' and she is house broken, three-years-old, and is a shi-tsu (however you spell that word). AND. . . she DOES NOT shed!!!! PTL!

Maybe you could post my upcoming MRI. It's on November 21 at 9:15 a.m. Then I go to see my surgeon on December 2 at 1:45 and he will go over the MRI with John and me. So I need prayer! I know God is sufficient and I am definitely
trusting in Him.

The dog has to go out. See you later!

Love, Debbie

Tuesday, October 18, 2005 3:10 PM CDT

Maxine just called. Seems that Debbie does NOT have diabetes insipidus. Which is very good news! So, she is home.
Not much else to share at this moment!
Todd

Monday, October 17, 2005 11:09 PM CDT

Debbie was admitted to the hospital today. She has developed Diabetes Insipidus. Whether that is spelled correctly or not is anyone's guess! This is a direct result of the cyst on the pituitary gland.
They are going to try to regulate this new developement with medication. Therefore, the reason for her being in the hospital. They will monitor her while they begin these meds. She may be out by tomorrow.
Continue to pray for Debbie and the family. One of the things that has so impressed me and many others about Debbie is the attitude she has had through this whole ordeal, even when new things develop. She is SO amazing!

Monday, September 26, 2005 3:37 PM CDT

Again, sorry for taking so long to post again. Debbie met with the doctors last Wednesday. The plan? Wait... They want to wait for two more months and take another MRI and see what happens between now and then.
According to the doctors there, the surgeons in New York did actually do the right thing. Where the tumor was before, you could not get to it through the nose. However, where the cyst is now, they can get it through the nose. It is now below whatever it was above the last time! Hope that makes sense.
Anyway, continue to pray. We continue to hope for the best.
Todd

Saturday, September 17, 2005 12:46 AM CDT

As I sit here writing this, John, Debbie and Kody are on their way out to Indiana. They are meeting with several surgeons in Indianapolis at St. Vincents Hospital on Wednesday. The doctors there think that they will be able to help Debbie.
The intent is to go up through her nose instead of opening her up again.
Please pray that the meeting will go well and that they will be able to do something for her. Our hearts have been heavy knowing that Debbie faces this again, but we know that God's not finished!
Todd

Monday, August 1, 2005 11:43 PM CDT

Well.... How do you start another one like this? We've been heavy-hearted the last couple of days. Debbie found out last Thursday that the cyst is back. She has one the size of a marble on her pituitary gland.
The doctors aren't sure what to do. It looks like right now that they are going to wait a couple of months and see what happens. If it grows, they plan to shoot another dose of radiation into it. They hope that will take care of it. To be honest, she can't stand another surgery. Five has been too many.
Please, please pray hard about this situation. I know you all have in the past, but it's seriously needed once again.
Todd

Thursday, July 14, 2005 11:26 AM CDT

I've had many asking about our vacation. We had a great time! Debbie really enjoyed herself, as did Kody! We had an awesome location in the smokies. The cabin was huge! It had a beautiful view of the mountains. It was located in the valley that Christy was filmed in.
We went to Cades Cove several times to see the wildlife and scenery. Wednesday, we were able to see eighty-four deer! Thursday night, we saw ninety-three deer, nine wild turkey, and SIX bear!!! We saw a mother bear with FOUR cubs, and then a very hungry bear later on. At least he looked like he should be hungry. He was a big bear, but looked very thin. We didn't try to get close to any of them! 'Course, there were always the dumb ones who got out of their vehicles and tried to get close. Stupid! One man told us that earlier that day, a man had placed his three year old behind a bear on a log and tried to take a picture. The bear charged! What was he thinking?!?
In the "something always has to happen" category, on the way down, they all wanted to go to Long John Silver's for lunch. I don't do that restaurant. So, next door was a Wendy's. Kody and I decided to go there. We had sat down to eat, and I had taken a couple of bites when I looked up to hear an older woman that worked at Wendy's telling the table next to us: "I don't know what we are going to do here! We have had this building sprayed by Orkin SEVEN times! But we just can't seem to get rid of the MAGGOTS!!" The people had found them in their food! I looked down to see several small flies buzzing around my food. I told Kody to put his food down! We were leaving! The wierd thing is, she said this loudly so everyone could hear. Yet others continued to chow down! We went to Long John Silvers......
Charlie took Debbie home Tuesday. We miss her already. But, we will see her soon.
Keep praying for Debbie. She still is on the mend. She gets sleepy very easy. Not a whole lot of energy. So continue to keep her in your prayers.
Todd

Wednesday, June 22, 2005 11:06 AM CDT

Next week is the week!! Debbie (and I believe, Kody) is coming out Monday. She is going to be riding with the Durgans from New York. John will not be able to go, but we are still looking forward to our vacation.
This past week has been a little strenuous for Kody, Debbie and John. Kody slammed his finger in the door of the house, severing close to a quarter of his middle finger on the left hand. He was screaming, Debbie was crying, and John was at work. Thankfully, Kathy Schaeffer, in an attempt to surprise Debbie, came up the walk. She's a nurse. They found the missing part of his finger and rushed him to the hospital. Once they arrived at the hospital, Kody stopped crying! The doctors were able to re-attach the finger, and they gave Kody a prize for doing so well. They didn't get home from the hospital till around one in the morning. I guess if it isn't one thing, it's another!
Please pray for safety for the Durgans, Deb and Kody as they travel to Indiana, and then as we travel to and from Tennessee. We look forward to the rest and relaxation as well as the awesome sights we'll see in God's country!
Todd

I know several have been asking why I haven't updated lately. I apologize for that! Life has been a little hectic the last couple of weeks.
Anyway, I just talked to Debbie. She sounded groggy. I asked her if I had awakened her. She said that I hadn't, but that she was just sitting down and had shut her brain off! Kody was at the Carter's down the street playing with their grandchildren.
I asked how John was doing. She said that some days he's good, but other days, he still seems to be struggling. We had so hoped that he would be able to go on vacation with us, but it looks like that won't be happening. Since that probably won't take place, he has asked that Kody could stay home with him instead of going on vacation with us. He can't stand the thought of being home alone while Debbie and Kody are gone. So... we are not sure what will happen there.
Debbie's memory seems to be working pretty well. She had remembered some things that her mother had told her about me. She says that she is really looking forward to going to Tennessee.
Please pray for John. I can't imagine the stress that he has went through. And still is. If you will, pray for a miracle that would allow him to go on vacation with us. I know that sounds crazy, but he really needs it! Continue to pray for Debbie as well.

I talked to Debbie this evening. She, John and Kody were at a birthday party for a lady at their church. Happy Birthday, Bonnie!!! What is it? 35?
She sounded really well. I asked her how she has been doing. She said that she has her days. Some days, she doesn't feel too good. But most days, she feels good. It's nice for her when Kody is in school. She is able to rest while he is gone. She said that he is still fat and sassy! She also said that John is doing pretty good.
She also stated that she has been fixing meals now. Spaghetti was one thing she mentioned that she had made. This is a definite sign of improvement.
We are looking so forward to Debbie and Kody going with us on vacation to Tennessee this year. This will be a first since she's been married. The time is getting closer but it seems like it's taking forever to get here! She is so excited to go. We would love for John to go, but he says he needs the money he would make that week. So, if this wouldn't be too petty to ask, would you mind praying that God would find a way for him to go. He really needs the vacation just as much as anyone else!
I plan to keep on posting, so please check back!

John, Deb and Kody left yesterday afternoon for New York. We hated to see them go. They expected to get in last evening around 11:30... Ever heard of car problems? Yep. They had 'em! The way I understand it, the alternator went out a few hours from home. So they did not get home till three o'clock this afternoon. Kody missed school and John missed work. *Sigh* What would life be without drama??
I haven't had a chance to talk to them since they've returned. But I plan to do so this weekend.
I've updated the photos. I had to include a picture of us all in front of Bandidos. Not everyone was able to attend. My dad was in the fields and John and Monica were not able to be there due to work. But the ones who were there enjoyed the food and time with Deb and family.
We appreciate your continued prayers!

Debbie, John and Kody arrived on Saturday morning. Kody spent Saturday afternoon at his cousin Alisa's house. They spent time fishing in the pond behind James and Kristy's house. They also rode the go-cart, which I'm sure Kody enjoyed! Not only that, but Grandpa took him on a ride on his old John Deere tractor. He loves to ride on that putt-putt!
Debbie seems to be doing real well. Her left eye continues to open up. It also seems to be tracking better with her right eye. She drove home from Decatur the other day. So she seems to be doing pretty good!
I was wrong about when they would be going home. They are leaving tomorrow. Tonight, we are going to go to Bandido's Mexican Restaurante! It's the best Mexican food anywhere! And I've been to a lot of them around this country! Can't wait for the fajitas!!!! So much for the diet....
I'll be posting new pictures on here sometime this week of this weekend.
Keep on praying!

I haven't had a chance to talk to Debbie anymore this week. I apologize for doing such a terrible job of updating. I must try to do better in the coming days!
Debbie, John and Kody are leaving tomorrow to come out for the weekend. It was to be a surprise for Maxine since Sunday is Mothers Day. They were concerned that Maxine would make other plans, so they went ahead and told her.
While they are here, there are at least a couple of get togethers scheduled, so it will be a busy time. I hope she gets to rest a little while she's out here.
We are really excited to see them. Even though it hasn't been that long since I've seen them, it seems like it's been a while.
Please pray for their safety as they drive out here and back. I believe they'll be leaving to go back to New York late Sunday night. I don't envy them! Short trip....
I'll keep on writing if you'll keep posting!!!

I talked to John, Kody and Debbie (in that order) tonight. They were headed back home from the mall.
I talked with John about Debbie's problem. He says that Dr. Holsapple believes it to be a cyst. Dr. Montgomery won't commit. Whatever it may be is located in a place that is non-threatening at the moment. So both doctors agree that they should wait for three months to take another MRI before doing anything.
John did say that surgery is not an option. Debbie is to the place that surgery would do more damage than good. So, if it's a cyst or part of the tumor, they will shoot radiation into it.
Both John and Deb seemed to be in good spirits. Debbie was herself. Not down in the least.
In the light mood department (and good news), Nellie is still in the Fike household!!!! They don't want to get rid of her because they know that Jenny Gardner will want to see her when she gets back from the mission field! Sorry, Jenny, I know your true feelings!
Please continue to pray for Debbie. If you know of anyone that may not be checking out this site anymore, please let them know that prayer is still needed!

First of all, I'd like to express my appreciation for those who let me and my aunt, Maxine know at IHC that they read about Debbie on this page. It was an encouragement to the family.
I apologize for taking so long to post again. I have been waiting on the results from Debbie's MRI. We found out yesterday, but she had to see a doctor today to talk about the results.
I wish I could say that everything showed fine.... But, they didn't. Something is showing up on the MRI. The doctor said today that it could be one of three things. A cyst, scar tissue from the surgery, or part of the tumor that they could have missed.... They want to wait three months and have her go back for another MRI to see if there is any change. If it is part of the tumor, he said they could shoot radiation in there to get rid of it. If it's a cyst....... Don't want to think about that. If it's scar tissue, that would be fine.
I know that it seems we are always asking for prayer, and I apologize for that. But this needs prayer. And lots of it. Please join with us and pray that everything turns out alright. Debbie really can't afford to go through another surgery, according to Dr. Holsapple. So pray that God would see fit to take care of this for her. If you will, let's bombard Heaven with prayer in Debbie's behalf.
Keep posting words of encouragement to her during this time. It will most certainly be appreciated.

I haven't talked to Debbie in the past couple days. Sort of hard to get in contact with her. She, John and Kody went to his dad's camp in Pennsylvania for the weekend just to get away. A time to relax.
Maxine did talk to John this afternoon. He gave some exciting news. He took Debbie out on a back road and had her drive. As long as she kept her left eye closed, she did really good! She had thought that she would never drive again, but this is a start! She definitely feels that she is not ready to drive in the city, but who can blame her!
She seems to be doing real well on her own. As soon as she gets home, I'll try to talk to her and find out more so I can share it with you.
Please continue to post encouraging words to Deb and John and Kody. And continue to keep them in your prayers.
Todd

I've talked to Debbie a couple times in the last two days. She was riding with John last night as he was taking the youth home from church. She sounded like she was enjoying the ride. The conversation was interrupted every little bit as she said goodbye to each teen.
I asked her what they had for Sunday dinner. Leftovers! Said she didn't feel like cooking yet. John was bringing home subs for their meal tonight. It looks like she may be a little hesitant to cook at this time.
Maxine said Deb told her she awoke at fifteen till nine this morning. Kody was to be at school at nine! He made it, somehow! Her mother-in-law picked him up and took him to school. Then he spent the rest of the day at her house, so Debbie spent the day alone.
I failed to mention while I was in New York that I received some bad news. Nellie is being put up for adoption. They just can't handle the shedding of hair anymore. Although I can't blame them, I told them that they won't ever find a dog with as good a personality as Nellie has. They agreed. So, when we left Saturday, I had to spend some extra time with the dog. I'm seriously gonna miss that dog!
I've posted new photos on the photo page. So take some time and check them out. Be sure to check out Debbie's fancy hat. It's a keeper! Ha!
Please let other people know that we are still updating the web site. I know Debbie would love to hear from you all! Please post!

Friday, April 8, 2005 10:00 AM CDT

I drove up here to New York Wednesday night after the last service in a series of revivals we have been singing in. My aunt Marjorie decided to come at the last minute. Thank goodness she rode with me. I fell asleep at the wheel several times. But she always caught me in time. That is, when SHE was awake! Other times, it had to be God. I woke several times to see us headed toward a ditch or gaurd rail. Don't think I'll try that again anytime soon.
Debbie seems to be doing really good. Her eye is really starting to open on it's own, and it seems to be tracking better along with the other eye. She is, however, a little nervous to have her mom go home tomorrow. I can understand that. She won't be able to go home with us because she has doctors appointments next week. One of those appointments is an MRI. Pray that everything shows ok.
Last time I was here, Kody and I had a "stare-down" while trying to get him to sleep in his own bed. During the "discussion", he made the statement that he knew everything. I tried to explain why he DIDN'T know everything, but it didn't go so well. Well, last night, while riding in my truck, he asked me if I remembered that! I said yes. Aunt Marjorie and Aunt Maxine decided to use the moment to teach him a Biblical lesson. They asked him "Now, who is the ONLY Person who knows everything?" Kody thought a minute and said "TODD!!" Now the boy gets it!!!
We went to Gary and Joanna's house last night for supper. It was awesome! Afterwords, we played a Bible trivia game. In it, there are four or five categories. Drawing, charades, word scramble and a couple others. It was women against the MEN! Joanna decided to do a charade. She had Debbie help her. The phrase was "Looking for the lost lamb." Jo asked Debbie to be the lamb and she would be the shepherd. Well, Debbie got on all fours and proceded to "MEOW"!!! She said, "Oh, wait, that's not right!" Everybody laughed so hard. It was really funny... Guess you had to be there....
I plan on taking some pictures today. I will post them on the website when we get home. So look for that!
As I said, we are leaving tomorrow morning. Please pray for us as we travel. Also, pray for Debbie as she adjusts to not having her mother here to help. She is not looking forward to it. Continue to pray for her health.
Another thing. Please continue to post encouraging messages in the guestbook. It will mean more now than ever since her mother won't be here with her. Even though I may not post as often, she'll still be checking out the website to see if you all have written! Who knows, maybe I can coax her into writing on here sometime! I will keep in touch with Debbie along the way and let you know how things are going with her!

Talked to Maxine today. She and Debbie were in the process of mopping the wood floors in the upstairs. Doesn't that just sound like so much fun?!?! I guess Maxine is trying to get the house cleaned from top to bottom before she leaves next week.
Debbie seems to be doing really good. According to Maxine, she is still on her way, but definitely doing good. She's helping around the house a lot more.
We have come to the conclusion that John and Debbie are going to need a lot of extra prayer next school year. Kody is a bear to get up in the morning! I guess they had quite a time with him this morning. 'Course, I can identify with him! I hate mornings! I've always claimed that the greeting "Good Morning" is an oxymoron! There's NO such thing! If God would have put me in charge of laying out the day, I would have put the crack of dawn at 10:30! The snooze button was one of the greatest inventions ever! I wear mine out!
I asked Maxine how everyone's nerves were up there. She said they ALL have been struggling with them here and there. Even though the surgery is over, the effects are not. Bills keep coming. It has been a dark time, and that is not easy to forget. It's been emotionally draining. Plus, there is still the issue with Debbie's left eye. At this point, it looks like surgery is the only option.
Please continue to pray for Debbie and the family. It is still needed.
We appreciate you all and your prayers!

Not much to report today. Debbie continues to make progress. To my understanding, Maxine is trying to help her get back in the swing of things as far as housekeeping is concerned. In other words, letting her take on more of the responsibilities each day.
I will be going to pick up Maxine the week of the fourth of April. Um... Let me rephrase that! I will be bringing Maxine back the week of the fourth!! I don't think my back would allow me to pick her up!!! She may have to lose a few pounds for me to be able to do that!
We have plans in place to talk John into letting Debbie and Kody come back with us for a little while. Pray that he would see the benefit in that! We think it would be good for Debbie to come to a relaxed atmosphere for a little while. The city there is so fast paced, and although she is in her house most of the time, the hurriedness of life affects them there as well. Does that make sense???
I guess what I'm trying to say is this. The phone rings off the wall up there! People calling for this. People calling for that. Not to mention the tele-marketers calling trying to get them to buy something! They need a "do-not-call" list up there in New York! While I've been up there, I've told too many to count to take John and Deb's names off of their lists! Yet, more seem to call than I can get rid of!
By the way, I'm not speaking of the friends that call Debbie. I don't want you all to stop! Unless it's twelve midnight! Or after nine! Ha! She loves to hear from you all. It spurs her on.
Anyway, I've went to prattling! If I hear of anymore news, I'll be sure to let you all know!
Keep praying! God's not finished with her yet!

I apologize for taking so long to write again! We have been extremely busy. We sang in Alabama and Tennessee last week, so I wasn't able to get to a computer! Plus, when I AM home, I spend most of my time laying down because of my back. My computer is at my parent's, so it's hard to get to it every day.
I talked to Maxine again today. She says that Debbie is really doing great! Seems like her normal self. I have noticed that she is still a little slow in her thinking, but I too have noticed a drastic change for the better in her!
Maxine is getting anxious to come home. I can hear it in her voice. I think I'll be going out to pick her up the first week of April. We are hoping that Debbie can come back with us for a little bit.
Nothing much else to share about Debbie at this point. My mother went for a heart catherization today. They noticed blockage in and EKG she had a couple weeks ago. But, they didn't find anything today. They don't know what is showing up on the EKG!.... Hmmmm. Sometimes I wonder about these tests they run!
Continue to keep our family in your prayers. Things are looking up for Debbie, and we are so grateful!

Debbie's HOME!!! She came home Monday afternoon. She was very happy to get out of that wonderful place in which she has spent too much time!
I talked to her yesterday. I asked her if she was able to sleep Monday night. She said she went to bed at nine, but decided to stay awake till John got back with Kody from his parent's house. The next thing she knew, she woke up in the morning with John beside her and Kody in the chair beside her bed! So, she slept really good!
She hasn't been having any pain! She's doing really good with her thinking and talking. My brother talked to her yesterday, and he said he can still tell a difference in her. I guess since Maxine, John and I have been around her through this all, it seems like she's totally herself. But John hasn't been there, so he can still sense a difference. That said, she has still made a huge improvement.
Not much else to share at the moment. Keep praying for Debbie. And all of them up there. Life is not back to normal for them yet, and it may be a while! Debbie still has to get back in the "groove" of things, and that will take some work!
Todd

Monday, February 28, 2005 2:35 PM CST

It looks like Debbie will get out of the hospital today! They took the CT scan earlier today and are waiting on the results. If everything shows fine, she'll get to come home!
I've talked to her on the phone several times, and I've gotta say, she sounds just like the old Debbie. Maxine and John say that there has been a major turn around! She doesn't have problems forming sentences. She laughs just like she used to! She's doing great!!
Maxine sounded exhausted on the phone this morning. She said that she was bored. In a hosptial?!?! Bored?!?! Aw! Really, Maxine! I can't imagine why!
They are calling for a major snow storm to hit in Syracuse this week, so John is really hoping they can get her home before that happens. 'Course, the weathermen have been known to be wrong before!
That's all I have at this moment. If I find out more, I'll let you know!
Keep praying!!!
Todd

Saturday, February 26, 2005 6:40 PM CST

Well, they moved Deb up to step down today! She is off the IV's and is back to her normal medications, except for the steroids she is still on for the swelling. She is looking great!
The swelling had increased quite a bit when we went in today, but Dr. Holsapple looked at it and said it looked normal for what she had been through. He is going to keep an eye on it though to make sure that he won't have to put a shunt in to keep draining that ventricle.
She's eating solid food, but for some reason doesn't eat much of it.... May have something to do with the fact that it's HOSPITAL FOOD!!!
The doctor said that the MRI results showed normal! Everything looks great! Which we thank the Lord for! They want to do another one before she is sent home. That looks to be on Monday.
Kody was able to spend some time with her today. He was very happy to see her! He says that when mommy gets well, he's gonna marry her! I think his Dad may have a bit of a problem with that!
I'm leaving for home tomorrow morning. Hopefully around nine. If Maxine will let me out the door! It's snowing pretty good here! I had my truck in four-wheel drive on the way home tonight and was still sliding around alot. 'Course she was screaming and hollering over in the passenger seat. "Leave me out!" I asked her what good that would do and she had no response! Just kept screaming about "seeing a far off land" or something to that effect! No, just kidding on that last line! Ha! But she WAS pretty worked up. So she's concerned about me driving tomorrow. A big snow storm is supposed to be heading here Monday, so I don't think I want to wait till then!
Please continue to pray for Debbie. It looks as though she'll be in the hospital at least till Monday. Pray that I would have a safe trip tomorrow. Pray that Maxine will be able to hold together with no-one else here from home. She gets quite lonely without that connection.
I'll keep you all posted!
Todd

*yawn* Who'd a thunk it! Being at a hospital all day could be tiring?! It mentally drains a person! And I ain't got much left to drain, if you know what I mean.
We spent the majority of the day up there. Until John got there from work, then Maxine and I left to go eat something before coming home. Didn't feel like cooking.
Deb's doing real good. This afternoon, they had her sit up in a recliner. She was still sitting up when we left!
They are keeping her in ICU until tomorrow. Her... how shall I say it... fluid output is quite a bit high. So they want to keep a close eye on that. She's had that problem after every surgery, though, so we aren't too concerned about that.
While sitting up, we noticed that her jaw was quivering just like it did before she had her seizure last year. She said it's been doing that every now and then. So we told the nurse, and they are keeping an eye on that.
They've been giving her morphine for the pain. It's been small doses as the pain hasn't been more than a seven, and at most times around three or four on the pain scale. They took the bandage off before we got there. The incision was in the same place as the last three surgeries.
Not much else to share at this point. I'll let you know more as I get it!
Keep praying for her. Pray that the tremor in her jaw isn't a pre-cursor for a seizure. She certainly doesn't need that! Pray that she would continue to improve and have no set backs.
Thanks!
Todd

OK! OK! Here it is!! Boy some of you are impatient! Ha! Thought sure my "I'll let you know tomorrow night" statement would surely hold off the phone calls, but I guess it was wishful thinking. If you were one that called, for the moment, please let this be the way you find out! As you can imagine, we are exhausted from a day spent at the hospital, and as I type, John is still up there! So we would like to spend our evening resting, and maybe we can catch up on calls later on this weekend! Thanks for your understanding!
Debbie's surgery went PERFECT! It lasted right around two hours. But, she spent the next five and a half hours waiting for a bed to open up in ICU! So that was a long miserable time to wait. Especially since we couldn't be back there where she was except for about five minutes each.
The swelling on her left side from the last surgery has gone down quite a bit already! The doctor did say that it would get worse before it got any better. She already looks so much more like herself, it is unbelievable!
She is very coherent. Er... she was until they gave her some morphine for the pain she was experiencing. Even then, she could still carry on a conversation.... In between sips... of water..... and more water.... and more water.. and... I must have made close to ten trips for her to the water and ice maker! She were quite thirsty!
We had an interesting experience right before we left. Jo, John's sister, brought Kody and Chase up to the waiting room so she could see Debbie and John could visit with Kody. They were doing extremely well, playing quietly.. For boys... There were two women in the same waiting room. One was in a motor scooter.. For health problems, I'm guessing. As soon as Kody and Chase walked in, these two women started making snide remarks about the two boys being there. They were "talking between themselves", but of course loud enough for John and Jo and another woman that was sitting by them to hear. It finally ticked that woman off so that she left the room. She did not care at all for the remarks the two other women were making.
Enter me... I'm standing, talking to John and Jo, when the woman decides to back up. She is about to hit me, so John says, "Whoa, ma'am! Someone is behind you." Boy! Did she let loose with the language! I mean, she went off on us! We tried to urge her to use nicer language in front of the five year olds, but that only encouraged her more, telling us that it was an "adult floor" and children were not to be present. Well, we knew that wasn't the case, and tried to explain the situation to her as far as Deb and Kody were concerned. Didn't phase her! She said she didn't care if Debbie had just had her fifth brain-related surgery! Then she made some snide remark about us being "Bush supporters!" How'd she know?!?!? Hmmmm... I'll be honest, I haven't told half of the story, but there's just no room here for all of that!
Anyway, back to what's important. Dr. Holsapple says that it will probably be two to three days and Debbie can come home!! Thank goodness it's not like the last time. Seventeen days alone in ICU! Not to mention the weeks in rehab! Physical rehab, that is! Don't think Deb's addicted to any drugs!! Ha!
Please continue to pray for Debbie. They are keeping an eye on her left ventricle to make sure that it keeps draining properly. They have a drain in it right now to get all the blood out, but that will probably come out tomorrow.
If you think of it, pray that we don't have anymore run-ins with that nice lady in the "go cart"!! Kody and Chase were very intimidated by the whole ordeal. Ok... So was I! I don't deal well with confrontation!
I'll keep updating as I find out more things!
Todd

Wednesday, February 23, 2005 8:00 PM CST

Tomorrow's the day!! Early, early, early, early, (get the point) in the morning! We have to have her at the hospital by 6:00. Surgery is at 7:30.
I asked Debbie today if she is nervous. Nope! Not a bit!
Kody is spending the night at Nana and Papa's house tonight. I can only imagine trying to wake him that early! Thank goodness we won't have to try.
We had a better day today than the past few have been. Thank the dear Lord! It just went along at a nice and even pace. Maxine, Deb and I went to Wal-mart and Aldi's. The women have to do their daily dose of shopping. Of course, I did none!.......
Well, please pray for Debbie tonight and tomorrow if you are up that early! We need some of you early risers to really pray! Not sure how long the surgery will be. As planned before, I'll post on here tomorrow night as soon as I know anything! That's a promise!
Todd

Ok. First off: How many have noticed that we, piddly old us, have had over 20,000 hits on this website!! I think that is so awesome and shows how much you all care about Debbie!
Now, so sorry it's taken so long to post again. It's been a frustrating weekend. To be honest, we all sort of fell apart. Well, Maxine fell apart and we all were taken with her! No offense to Maxine. She has endured so much herself the past few months, and sometimes, when put in that position, you don't feel like you can take anymore. She's there! I, by no means, mean this as being negative towards Maxine! We are trying to help her along in this matter by encouraging her!
Today, we decided to get away and go to Bouckville where there are a TON of antique stores. Maxine LOVES antique stores. As do the rest of us. Leave it to us to pick the day that most decided to be closed. Three were open! Two of those literally just had junk piled up on top of junk! The first one we went to was the only one worth going to! Drove an hour each way for just about nothing!
We came back and sat and looked at each other till it was time to go meet John to eat at Jaunita's.. Again.. Maxine wanted to go.. Again.. Something just struck me. I wanted to fix baked ziti again for dinner tomorrow night, and she said: "Well, if you want it AGAIN!" Insinuating that she didn't want it AGAIN. Yet, we went to Jaunita's AGAIN! Hmmph! Seems I must have a little talk with her about that one!
A little over a day now till Deb has her surgery. 7:30 in the morning on Thursday. Let's pray the doctors are wide awake at that time in the morning. I sure won't!
Please continue to pray for Debbie. That God would be near her as she heads toward this surgery. That He would keep her safe and at peace.
Also, pray for Maxine. She really needs prayer for her peace of mind as well. Not being funny. She's just at the end of her rope, so to speak. Things just seem to keep coming to our family, one thing after another. It just seems to pile up all at once. Things are weighing heavily on her mind and heart. So please pray for her as well as all of us.
Todd

So much for the "No news is good news" cliche! We got some disappointing news today. Debbie doesn't get to have surgery until next Thursday... They forgot to tell her to stop taking the aspirin they had prescribed. Plus, the doctor said they should have had the pre-op a week before, but they only had it two days before. He said they would have caught it then.
So, we have to wait till next Thursday... Disappointing, but yet we don't want her bleeding to death either! I guess what's to be is what's to be.
We thank you all for your prayers today and hope that you will do the same next Thursday!
Todd

Thursday, February 17, 2005 7:02 PM CST

We've had many asking what we found out today at the hospital as far as the CT scan is concerned. Well.... The only way we would find out anything is if there was something there that would give reason not to have the surgery tomorrow. And, thankfully, there has not been any word to that effect! So that would more than likely mean that everything showed ok! No news is good news!
We are to be at the hospital at 10:30 tomorrow morning. Surgery is SUPPOSED to be at 12:30. We have no idea how long the surgery is to take. We are hoping it's a short one!
I will post on here tomorrow evening concerning the results. I PROMISE! It will be easier for me to post the results on here than to have to call a thousand people! Ha! We do so appreciate your all's concern! So please don't take that sentence wrong! Debbie and John don't have long distance on their phone, so we have to use cell phones to call people. And, as you know, cellular companies love to charge a nice rate for the use of the "over the minutes" feature!
Please pray especially hard for Debbie tomorrow. And our nerves! Hold her up in prayer all day! We so appreciate your prayers and the affect they have had so far!

Just a quick note to give you information so you can pray for specifics.
Debbie goes for a CT scan at 11:00 tomorrow. Then, her surgery is scheduled for 12:30 on Friday. She is actually more anxious about the CT scan than she is about the surgery!
I don't know that I'll have time to post tomorrow. So please pray extra hard for Debbie in the next few days! We will so appreciate it!

Have you ever noticed that when someone tells a story, a lot of times, they leave out some of the details? Take this for instance:
"P.S. Did I mention that Todd lost in dominoes"
That was in Jenny Gardner's latest post. But I couldn't help but notice that she left out that I led the whole game until the last phase of Mexican Domino Train. I tell you Jenny, if you are going to tell something, it better be the whole truth and nothing but the truth! I was glad to note, however, that she has discovered that the country she lives in is the U.S.A. In her first post, she stated that she lived in Clinton, which happens to be her county, not her countRy!!!
God has said that he would never give us more than we could handle. Right? Without being sacrilegious, I sometimes have to think He brings us pretty close to the edge at times. You all know my problem with my back. You know Deb's problems. We still haven't figured out my brother's problem. Now, today we found out that my mother's heart is not looking good! She was to have carpel tunnel surgery Friday, the same day as Debbie's surgery. They did an EKG today to make sure she was in shape for the surgery, and found that there appears to be some blockage in her left side of the heart. So, surgery has been postponed. She's supposed to see a heart specialist the 28th of February.
She found out recently that she has emphysema. Never has smoked a day in her life. I'm sure with all of the coughing she does, that has not helped her heart. So, if you will, pray for my mother in the coming days.
Debbie is still making some great strides. Her short term memory is really improving! In fact, she's doing better than I am! I couldn't remember where we saw an ATM in the mall today, and she told me right where it was! This is not a pretty illustration, but, live with it! ha! We saw a car pulled to the side of the road on the way to the mall to walk today. A woman was beside the car, and she was... how shall I say..... praising ralph? Tossing her cookies? Revisiting lunch? Two hours later, we drove by the place and Debbie said, "Eww! That's where that woman was up-chucking!" So, she definitely is improving! Hee Hee! Don't you love that story! Brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?!
Debbie goes for blood work tomorrow. Then, on Thursday, she goes for a CAT scan. Then, Friday is the big day!
Keep on praying. God is working!

I have a special greeting for you all today. I asked Debbie if she would like to write something to you all. Sister Wallick gave me the idea and I thought it was a great one! So, she has consented to write to you. Here it is!

Hello, Friends!

It’s so good to hear from you today! You are all so awesome and we think the world of you. The cards you send us have been incredible; so incredible that it makes me feel like, well, crying! Thank you so, so, so very much for being a friends of John and me.

You’re the BEST!!

Debbie

Not a long letter, but I think it says alot! I didn't have to correct a thing. It's all her!
We are just amazed at the steps she's taken in the past week. We are very happy. Yesterday, we noticed that while playing piano for church, she was singing along! She remembers where she puts things, and can describe in detail things that she's done the day before!
She is a little anxious about the surgery this coming Friday. But she wants it done and over with. Please continue to hold her up in prayer like never before. Keep posting as well. She has enjoyed reading the new posts so much! You don't know how encouraging they are for all of us!
Thank YOU!
Todd

We just ate an awesome meal! Maxine fried potatoes. I fixed baked chicken breasts in a sauce. And Debbie made corn casserole. She did an awesome job on it! Tasted just like it always has in the past!
John, Maxine and I sang a special in church this morning. My throat was not in the best of shape. Nellie spent the night with me Friday night. I woke up Saturday morning with my throat swollen shut! It's still not totally open. So, I guess I'm more allergic to that dog than I thought! Now, she has to spend the nights alone again!
Debbie has been playing the piano for church now. This morning we noticed that not only was she playing, she was singing along!! This past week has shown a huge improvement in Debbie. She has made so much progress in the last week, we can't believe it! We are so happy!
She's been helping more in the kitchen. She washes the dishes and helps sometimes in the cooking. She also puts things away around the house that a certain young person leaves out after he's finished. I don't know what we are going to do with that John! ha! No, I was talking about Kody!
Speaking of John... That guy is one awesome dude! He is a romantic person. He took Debbie to a Syracuse Symphony Orchestra event Friday night. Also took her to Olive Garden, then spent the night at his sister's house since they were out of town. He had a new outfit for her to wear so she would look snazzy! He's just an awesome guy! We are so proud that Debbie has him. He has stayed by her side through this whole trial like there was nothing to it!
Sure, he's had his moments where he's felt like buckling under the pressure, but who wouldn't? He is SO supportive of Debbie and so proud to call her his wife! We think the world of him and the way he has been there for her in every way!
This week is the week we've been waiting for. She goes for pre-surgery testing on Wednesday. Then the surgery is on Friday. Please pray that everything goes smoothly! If it does, she should only be in the hospital two to three days! So, if you would, really build her up in prayer this week. We so want everything to go right!

Jenny left early yesterday morning. John took her on his way to work. We sure miss her. She added so much joy and laughter to our day. She is so thoughtful. We are still finding Post-it notes all over the house with encouraging scripture verses on them. On the washer and dryer, over the sinks, on doors, over the ironing board... Everywhere! Kody counted at least thirteen.
We have noticed a huge improvement in Debbie in just the past few days! She is learning to do the thought process needed to come up with the word she is trying to say. She is really making some huge strides! We are so excited!
The therapist is here now, so Maxine and I are holed up in my room while they work with Debbie so she can concentrate.
Tonight, John and Deb are going to celebrate Valentine's day. They are going to go out and eat and then go to a hotel for the night just to get away. Papa and Nana Fike took Kody after school and are keeping him for the night. So it's just Maxine and I to fend for ourselves tonight! We are going to go out and eat and go to the mall. No, David, I'm not taking your place! She is still your wife! You are not that lucky! Ha! Just kidding, Maxine!
Thanks so much for posting! She is reading the posts and is enjoying them so much! Keep it up!!! And keep on praying. She is doing so much better, and I can't help but believe it's due to the prayers of God's people!

What a busy day! Took Kody to school this morning. Jenny went with me to see where he goes to learn/play/give gray hairs to teacher! Mrs. Johnson had a big bin of rice in the middle of the floor for them to play in. Kody was the fourth child there and the floor was already well on it's way to being covered with the rice that was to be in the bin. While we were there, the "stop" came out and rice poured out the bottom. When I went back to get Kody, they were still sweeping up rice! Lucky me. I get to be a helper on Friday! I should have requested that there be no rice! I knew I couldn't stand rice and now I know why!
After we picked up Kody, we went to eat, then to Wal-Mart. After that, we ran Jenny to the mall to return something she bought yesterday. Then we went to the antique store here in town. Four floors of antiques! Kody and Debbie were asleep in the back seat of my truck, so they stayed out in it while Jenny, Maxine and I went in.
We came home and fixed supper. Man, was it awesome! Pot pie, mashed potatoes, corn, lettuce salad, rolls, lemon bars, and more pot pie! Mmm-mmm good!
Debbie de-boned the chicken for the pot pie. We didn't even ask her to do it. She just did it on her own. She had occupational therapy today. She was to have speech this afternoon, but it was canceled.
She is really anxious to get the surgery over with. As are all of us! We can't wait until it's past so she won't have to wear that annoying helmet!
She still struggles quite a bit for words. She will start a sentence, but half way through, she'll forget what it was she was saying. She did that this morning with Jenny, but five minutes later, she remembered what it was she wanted to say and just blurted it out! So she is coming.
Continue to pray for her. And post!!! She comes in all the time asking if anyone else has posted lately in her guestbook. So, come on, people! POST!!!!!

I arrived around three-thirty this morning. No close calls or anything! Just an ordinary trip. Which is just fine with me. There seemed to be a lot of cops on the way up, though. Somebody must have warned them I was on the way!
I tried to get a little sleep but couldn't get there for a couple hours. Even then, it was pretty restless. Then this afternoon, Debbie, Maxine, Kody and I went to the airport to pick up Jenny. She arrived right on time! She brought several gifts from friends of Debbie's in Indiana. Very thoughtful!
We ate supper, of which I fixed the main dish - baked ziti (yes, we are all still amongst the living!) Maxine made a salad. Jenny took the texas toast out of the box and put it on a tray and baked it.... an hour too early! But it warmed up nicely! Ha!
We sat around a while and visited. But now, we are exhausted and ready to go to bed.
There's not been much change in Debbie that I can see. She still struggles with words. She did say today that she can't wait to have the surgery and hopes that it takes care of her left eyelid.
Please pray that God would touch her if it be His will. We would love to see Debbie back to her old self again! She tires easily, not having much energy. She just needs a touch from God.
Todd

Sunday, February 6, 2005 10:42 AM CST

I'll be leaving tonight to head back up to New York. I'll be driving most of the night, so pray for me. I need to get up there so I can pick up Jenny Gardner who will be flying in tomorrow to visit with Debbie a few days before her surgery.
Maxine says that there has been some improvement with Debbie in the past few days. So thanks for praying to that end. Please don't stop!
I know this is short, but I'm going to eat with my parents and run home to take a nap so I'll be rested for this nice trip I have planned! Ha!

Yesterday was Kody's birthday. He turned five, going on seventeen... We called him to say Happy Birthday. When I told him "Happy Birthday", he said "Happy Birthday" to me! He is so funny! They took him to Chucky Cheese's. Along with three other boys his age that goes to his church. David and I both agreed that we didn't feel like we missed out on anything other than it being Kody's party! Four young boys screaming and running around was not our idea of a fun evening! Ha! But I'm sure they had fun!
I've been very persistent in trying to find out Debbie's condition. Maxine says that there really has not been any change in the past couple weeks. She seems to be at a stand still. Maxine seems to be down quite a bit. I know she is homesick. Even though she knows she's where she needs to be, it doesn't make it any easier.
That is all I really know. That's why I haven't been posting. Nothing really to tell.
Continue to pray for the whole family. It doesn't get any easier as time goes by. Every day is a constant reminder of what has happened. And that's not an easy thing to deal with. Pray hard for Debbie. Pray that this stand still would cease and that improvement would start again.
Thanks!
Todd

Sorry it has taken so long to post anything. Trying to get information out of Maxine is like getting honesty from a crooked politician!
We found out yesterday that the surgery has been scheduled to replace the bone flap! Finally! It is going to be on Friday, February the eighteenth. She will go for an MRI and other tests to make sure she is ready on the sixteenth.
I've been meaning to tell this, but it keeps slipping my mind. Maxine has reminded me several times, but my brain keeps hiccupping! John and Sharon, across the street from Debbie, gave her an awesome gift for Christmas. They printed out all of the guestbook entries and put them into a scrapbook, making a really nice book to look at. Plus, they left pages for more entries to be put in. Hint, hint! So you all can keep on posting! I'm telling you all, there were a lot of pages! So it was no small thing for them to do! So, thanks so much, John and Sharon!!!
Can't think of anything else to share at this point in time. I'll keep you posted if I find anything else out.

Wednesday, January 19, 2005 11:20 PM CST

I'll be leaving tomorrow (Thursday). It's a bittersweet thing to do. It will be nice to see my family that I haven't seen in a little over two weeks, yet I hate to leave Deb, John, Kody, and, yes, even Maxine. Oh, and Nellie too! But, especially Debbie. I honestly get teary-eyed just thinking about it. Forget that! I just cry! Yeah, a man who cries. Get over it!
It was really nasty this morning when I took Kody to school. You know that when a child thinks it's too bad to even play in the snow, it's BAD! We had planned on getting Debbie out for excercise, but when I came back, we talked it over and thought it might be best to stay in.
When I went back for Kody, it had calmed down quite a bit. The wind (which had been horrific) had died down, but it was still snowing. We decided that Debbie did need the excercise, so we bundled her up real good and warmed the car so she wouldn't get too cold.
We took her to the antique mall that has four floors. Take that, stair master! Kody was such a gentleman and made sure his mother knew where each step was, checking on her every little bit.
Then we took her to the mall and ran a few miles! NOT!!! We did walk quite a bit! She was pretty wore out by the time we finished! She did some shopping for her husband (don't tell him! I think it may be for Christmas!)
Kody had to use the facilities while we were at the mall. Debbie said she would take him. En route to the restrooms, two men looked at Debbie and laughed. That didn't set well with Kody, according to him. He stuck his tongue out at them! When he told me, I said that usually, I wouldn't condone that behaviour, but I suspect they deserved it, so "Right on, Kody!" I find myself staring back at people that stare at her. Once they see me doing the same to them, that usually stops the staring! God may have to help me along those lines! Thankfully, it appears that Deb is oblivious to the whole thing.
After returning home, Maxine and I made up a concoction of our own for supper. Noodles with hamburger covered in a cream-of-mushroom-soup-with-sour-cream-sauce. Stirred it up real good, poured it in a dish and sprinkled it with cheese before baking in the oven. It turned out quite tasty! It's amazing what you can do with what you find in a cupboard!
Can I take a moment right now and say what a wonderful husband Deb has?! He is incredible. That man goes from sun up til sun down! He comes home, barely has time to eat before the phone rings off the wall! People asking him to do this and do that. He rarely has time for just his family. It's been rare that I've seen John just have time to himself and wife and child. Yet, he takes it in stride, and when another duty is piled on, he doesn't complain, just does it. I feel for him. I know he would love nothing better than to just come home and share time with his wife and child. No interruptions, no duties calling. Just rest and relaxation with his family. Pray for him that God would give him strength as he continues to do what is asked of him!
Debbie fell asleep and missed church tonight, so I stayed with her since I wasn't feeling too well with my back.
I told Maxine I thought I'd take a nap and expected her to wake me once she returned from the service. Can you believe she didn't! Yeah, I knew you'd believe it! So I just woke a little bit ago. And they were all in bed! I needed John to wake me at seven in the morning, so I hope Maxine gave him the message.
Pray for me tomorrow as I travel home. The road conditions up here aren't too wonderful for travel. Pray that God would keep the car on the road!
Continue to pray for Debbie. Some days are better than others. But she's a trooper. She becomes bigger than life to me each day I'm around her. She's certainly my hero!

Tuesday, January 18, 2005 10:09 PM CST

It has already been more of a week than I would care to have! Debbie has a steady stream of health care workers coming in and out. Too many to count! Yet she somehow remembers each one's name! That's cool!
Kody had the day off of school yesterday, and, YES, I didn't take him to school on accident! So, Sunday night, he went to his cousin Chase's house to spend the night in his new sleeping bag he got for Christmas. Boy, the house was quiet!
Monday morning, Deb, Maxine and I went to the antiques mall to spend some time. But, it was closed. So we plan to go tomorrow. Instead, we went to the mall. It is very important that Debbie gets the excercise she needs to build her lungs in preparation for her upcoming surgery. She really hates to just walk in the church as she does on occasion, so we try to get her to places where there is a purpose for walking. She has no health workers coming in tomorrow, her only day this week, so we are going to make the most of it.
Don't forget about Debbie in your prayers! Pray that she would continue to gain strength in the coming days leading up to her surgery. Also pray for her her mind and her thinking. She still has a LONG way to go in that area. She still struggles for words, and has a time trying to carry on a conversation. Pray for her mom and I as we continue to take care of her and help keep her from injury. She hates that helmet and HATES for us to keep on her to wear it! But it is a necessity. It's hard for her to comprehend the seriousness of what could happen if she were to hit her head without the helmet on. So pray for her anytime you can think of it.
Todd

Saturday, January 15, 2005 7:53 PM CST

I'm going to take the risk of writing this with Maxine looking over my shoulder... "Is that the way you should have put that?" "Did you spell that right?" "Is that what that word means?" *sigh* Give me grace! She's already complained! "Picking on me again, I see..."
Debbie, John and Kody went in a sleigh ride today. They left while I was still getting ready. Maxine and I went to an antique show and sale. Before we left, I went to leave Nellie out as I always do. I called and called for her. No answer. Maxine had been on the phone for who knows how long talking and talking and tal..... You get the picture. She said: "Oh no! I left her out and got on the phone and forgot about her!" So I go outside and call for her. No Nellie in the backyard. So I look out the front door and holler. No Nellie in the neighborhood. I look upstairs and down. No Nellie. Maxine, cold-hearted as she is, said: "Let her go. We need to get to the antiques show. We only have four hours to look." I took Nellie's side and said we couldn't do that.
I looked some more. Then, just to be a little stupid, asked "Did they take Nellie with them?" Maxine,in such wonder, said, "Oh, that's right. They did!" I was stunned! Here I am, looking all over for that dog, and Maxine had "forgotten" that they had indeed taken her with them! Here she is, behind my back saying "Don't tell that. They'll think you hate me!" I don't hate her... Just stand in amazement sometimes at her "blondeness".
Deb and them had a great time, although I can't picture Nellie doing so well in a sleigh. Actually, John said she didn't do so hot. But they had fun. After they finished there, they met with John's family to exchange gifts. They haven't had the opportunity to have Christmas until today since Deb was in the hospital the weekend they were planning to do it.
This morning, Debbie woke John, Kody and Maxine up with the question if they wanted pancakes. Well, she had intended to wake only Kody and John, because when Maxine came down, there were only three place settings! Come to find out, it is a ritual for Debbie to do that on Saturdays. She already had them made when they came downstairs. Maxine let them go ahead and have the meal to themselves. Last night, Debbie made a dessert for our meal. So she is definitely making some improvements.
She found out from her endocronoligist that she has Adrenal Insufficiency. (Thanks Maxine for the spell check. So voluntarily given!) Her doctor has ordered her to wear a medical bracelet with the information on it. So we had one made for her this past Thursday. They believe this is why she became so sick two weeks ago. You can read about this in the journal history (cued by Maxine). It was what they would term an Adrenal Crisis.
The second opinionated doctor... er opinion from the second doctor is the same as the first. He can't find any trace of the tumor. However, he wants her to come back in six months, after the bone flap has been replaced, to check into it further. He said that it was hard to tell because of the bone flap being out. Don't know what that has to do with it, but that is what he said. He did say that there were some post-operative changes that made it more difficult to tell what is really going on in that head of Debbie's.
Pray hard for Debbie. She doesn't say much, but I'm sure this can't be easy on her. I know how I would feel if I were in her situation. Pray that God would encourage her in the days and months ahead.
Please stay tuned for more episodes sharing the adventures of every day living with Maxine!!!

Thursday, January 13, 2005 10:35 PM CST

Would like to ask that you all pray real hard at 1:15 on Friday. Debbie is going to see another specialist who will give a second opinion as to whether the tumor is totally gone. If he doesn't believe that it is gone, there will be two options. One: Wait and see if the tumor grows back, which will happen if there is any left at all, or Two: shoot radiation into the area to kill what's left of it.
Dr. Montgomery will be the one looking at the pictures tomorrow. Please pray that if there is any left, he will see it. But we can also pray that it IS gone, just as Dr. Holsapple has stated. Please keep this in mind.

Tuesday, January 11, 2005 10:30 PM CST

We got some WONDERFUL news and some not-so-wonderful news today. Which do you want first. Now wait! Some want the good first, and others want the not so good first.... I guess I'll have to make the decision!
Ok. We'll go with the wonderful first. Dr. Holsapple said that he can not find one trace of the tumor!!!!! It's GONE!! They won't even have to do radiation! Isn't that awesome! He is going to send the MRI results to one of his colleagues to make sure, but he is confident that it is gone!
Now, part one of the not so great news. Her left ventricle is swollen to one half again the size of the right one. He believes that this is retarding Deb's healing process. He is going to keep a close eye on it just to make sure nothing goes wrong. He believes that it's just because of all the trauma that it has gone through in these past surgeries. But it is crucial that it goes down so the healing process can continue. If it doesn't go down on it's own, they may have to go back in and put a shunt in. Truthfully, Debbie can't afford to have that kind of surgery.
Part two of the not...... The earliest they can schedule the surgery to replace the bone flap is February 25th.... They have to order the plastic replacement, and it's done on a first come first serve basis. They had to wait until today to see how she was doing before they could order it. This is because her bone continues to grow, so they have to wait until the latest possible date before surgery to order. Does that make sense?? I know what I'm trying to type, but I don't know if it's coming out the way I want!
In other words, if she wouldn't be ready physically for the bone flap to be replaced, they would have to wait until she would be. And by then, if ordered ahead of time, the bone flap replacement would be too big.. How's that?! Understand now??? Ha! I don't!!!
So we have two major things to pray for. And we BEG of your prayers! One: That the ventricle swelling would subside. That's a biggy! This would help her thinking be more clear, and would help her to heal. Plus, we don't want to have to have her go through yet another surgery for the shunt. Two: That if God wills, her bone replacement would be done faster than they expect! The risk of brain damage is wearing on our family very much, so the sooner the bone flap is replaced, the better! Also, don't forget to thank God for the miracle he has performed in the fact that the tumor is HISTORY!!!
We thank you all for your concerns for Debbie. I don't know of a person that is more loved by so many people. And you all have shown it time and time again! Thanks again!
Todd

Saturday, January 8, 2005 8:41 PM CST

What a day... It's been busy, fun, depressing, tiring, thrilling and sad. I'll try to share all.
John thought it would be nice to take Kody to see Disney on Ice. So we all went. Maxine, Kody, John, Deb and I. And it was fun! Watching Kody get to see Donald Duck (my favorite), Goofy, Minnie and of course Mickey, he loved it!
After that, John, Deb, Maxine and Kody went to Sacred Melody bookstore while I went to walk at the mall. I need the excercise....
That's where the depressing part was. Seeing all the good sales on stuff that I could definitely use, but the pocket book having cob webs! Oh well, that's life!
While at the mall, Mother called me with some bad and sad news. They have been out of electricity since Wednesday, and it could be till this coming Wednesday before the power is restored. They had a lot of ice and then snow on top of that.
Dad had hooked up the generator to the furnace so they could have heat. My brother Tim decided to hook up more of the house today. In the process, he blew up my computer. One I had just bought one and a half years ago when my other computer was struck by lightning... So I am now computer-less. *sob*
The sad news is that my mom's double cousin Vaughn Mattax died today. His mom was my grandpa's sister, and his dad was my grandmother's brother! So this was not something we wanted to hear. We feel badly for his family. Keep them in your prayers. The Funeral is Wednesday.
Now, to Debbie! That's what your here after anyway! She has an eye appointment Monday at 2:45. Then she meets with her brain surgeon, Dr. Holsapple, on Tuesday at 2:45. Pray that everything checks out ok so she can have the surgery to replace her bone flap soon!
She sleeps quite a bit. It takes nothing at all to wear her out. She really needs to excercise three times daily, but she fights us on it. She really hates to do it. So pray that God would give her strength to heal in the coming days ahead.
Todd

Wednesday, January 5, 2005 8:15 PM CST

.................... How in the world do I begin??? Have you all noticed that my journals are not nearly as interesting as they are when Maxine is around??? Well, you'll have to read to the bottom of this thing to find out what happened to us today.
Debbie had a doctor's appointment this morning. Maxine took Kody to school, then came back and Deb, Maxine and I went to the doctor. Well, I took them and dropped them off. I went to Wally world for some "necessities".
The appointment went pretty good. He said three words or phrases, "George Washington, Television, and ...." uh oh, forgot what the third one was. He then said that in five minutes he was going to ask her what he had said. He then had her concentrate on excercises for five minutes, then asked her for the words. The only one she couldn't think of was "Television". So he was impressed.
We then went to the mall, since Debbie is to walk every day. Not sure how much walking she got done as Maxine took her to Bon Ton...... Ladies and their "excercise"!!
I left and picked up Kody from school, then went back and met Max and Deb at the mall where they ate. Then we went to Aldi's for some groceries. After that, we decided to stop at Eckards for some Sierra Mist for Debbie.
This is where the day becomes interesting. I told Maxine and Deb and Kody to just stay in the car while I ran in and got it. While I'm at the register, here comes Maxine with a cart. "I'm looking for some buys!!!" Ok. So she looks a little. As we are getting ready to leave, here come Deb and Kody. Kody had to use the rest room. That's when something hit me.
I had left the keys in the car for them.. I prayed that Debbie hadn't locked it, but......... *sigh* So, I go back in and tearfully ask Maxine why she had to come in!!! I walk across to a gas station to ask for help, but I forgot that this is a big city where people don't feel like helping...... For free...... $57.50.....
I walk back and tell Maxine. She goes up to the clerk at the register and tells her our problem. A man, checking out at the next register, overhears our plight. He told Maxine that he had AAA and he would call them and wait for them to come out to unlock the car for us! He waited forty-five minutes for them to come! We offered to pay the man for helping us out, but he REFUSED!!! Talk about an angel! There for us at the right moment, and at the right place.
Anyhoo.... Continue to pray for Debbie. She still has alot of trouble coming up with the right words when she is talking. She has to sit and think for a while sometimes. The doctors have her describe it to us if she can't think of what the word is. Otherwise, she is acting pretty good! Praise the Lord.
Todd

Monday, January 3, 2005 12:20 AM CST

It appears that Debbie is coming home today. I've not heard for sure what the diagnosis was.. Just found out that Kody has the flu... Not good for Debbie to be around.
Maxine wants to leave tomorrow for New York. I am to take her. Not looking forward to the drive. Nor sleeping on a sofa. Nor being around someone who has the flu! But, that's the sacrifice that will be made for Debbie! Isn't that what it's all about?!?
Please pray for our safety as we travel. So far, no accidents, even though there have been a few close calls. I'm not sure how long I'll be up there, but I'll keep you all posted.
Keep praying for Debbie. This infection has not been good for her. We hope that things clear up soon so she can have the surgery to replace the bone flap. So pray to that end.
Todd

They have decided to keep Debbie in the hospital over the weekend. Her heart rate was at 140 yesterday. They are really concerned about her heart since her temperature was so high.
When John found her yesterday morning, she could not talk. She had been revisiting meals all night long, so she was very weak. He called the EMS and had them come to get her.
They did another MRI, spinal tap, and other tests to determine what was going on....
John said she was better this morning. She was more responsive. But they are still keeping an eye on her just to be sure.
Appreciate your prayers!

Hello. This is John Myers again. I just talked to my mom and then to Todd and they gave me this report: When John and Deb got back to NY from IN, John came down with the flu. Since then, Deb has come down with it also. Last night John woke up to a half empty bed. Unbeknownst to him, Deb was down stairs (how shall we say this?) being sick. He took Deb's temp and it was 105. He rushed her to the emergency room and they are keeping her for observation. So as we type Deb is once again in the Hospital. With Deb's system being at low tide from all she has been through, this is something they need to keep a very close watch on. As an update on Deb's condition prior to this setback, I observed her quite a bit at Christmas and was both impressed and concerned with her progress. She is moving about quite well, but at the same time she is moving slowly. Most of the time she was very able to carry on a conversation without any trouble. She is still in need of seroius prayer for her condition. We appreciate all that you have done and will do. Keep Praying!

John, Deb, Maxine, Kody and NELLIE left around two o'clock Thursday afternoon. The weather wasn't so great to travel in. They didn't get here until two in the morning! Debbie was awake the whole ride home. In fact, she was the one who kept John awake at the wheel. She offered to drive, but they all seemed to think better of it for some reason....
Nellie was really happy to see me last night. She jumped about two feet in the air. It was so good to see them all again. I think Kody has grown a foot! Well, not really, but he has grown!
I went with my Dad and Mom and the rest of my family to Dad's family reunion last evening. When we returned, John, Deb, Kody, Maxine, David and Marjorie came up to my place to show John and Deb. They stayed for a while and visited.
Debbie had no problem walking up the stairs to my apartment. She could have used the elevator, but John thought she needed the excercise. She is to walk fifteen minutes three times a day. It's pretty hard to do that since the temperature only got up to five degrees yesterday. When they came up to my place, it was twelve BELOW!!! You talk about cold! So, they plan on coming up to my place to walk the halls. Plus, there is an excercise bike as well as a treadmill in the community room there.
David's side of the family has come up today for a meal and to see Debbie. They are still there. When they leave, Debbie and Maxine are coming up to seperate gifts for our Christmas get together tomorrow. We've always had Christmas together. Maxine's family, my family and Marjorie always buy for everyone. That's usually twenty one or twenty two people. So it amounts to quite a few gifts. We really enjoy doing it even though the family continues to grow. I'm really looking forward to it. We each take turns opening gifts, from the youngest to the oldest. We keep going around in that order till all the gifts are open. It takes a few hours, but it's fun. John and I always fight over giving our gifts first. We enjoy giving them much more than getting. But, I'll still take my gifts, don't get me wrong!
Debbie still isn't herself. She's coming along, but still has quite a way to go. She still searches for words, and we've noticed that she uses words that she didn't use to. It's like her vocabulary has changed. I don't know how to describe it. She didn't seem to remember that I was up there through the whole ordeal. She told me everything that had happened and what still had to be done, not seeming to know that I already knew.
She goes next Wednesday for an MRI. Then they will be able to schedule her surgery to replace the bone flap. So pray next Wednesday that everything will be ok!
Her hair is really growing! I couldn't believe it! You can't see the scar in front. You can on the side, but that will change!
Keep praying. We are so appreciative of everything you all have done!
Todd

Talked to Maxine a little bit ago. They are really getting excited about coming home for a few days.
She says that Debbie continues to get better as each day goes by. I asked if her conversation skills were any better. She stammered around for a little bit before finally saying that she still struggles with that, though it is getting better.
Yesterday, John made the statement that he missed the Debbie that "was the glue that held him together." Debbie responded, "I will be, just give me a few months!" That sounds like the Debbie we all know and love.
Maxine messed up again today... Via John's mess up... But we'll blame Maxine instead. She thought Kody was out of school for Christmas break... WRONG!!! He was still supposed to go today. He didn't...... She let him sleep in. Come to find out, John checked his schedule last night and saw that he was to go, but Maxine was out of the loop. But I still like to blame it on her.....
Not much else to report. Prayers are still being answered!
Todd

Just wanted to let you all know that we are still amongst the living! I know I've been doing a lousy job in keeping you all up to date. Life has been a little busy the past couple of weeks. But I'll try to do better.
I don't know much to tell at the moment. Maxine said that Debbie has her days where her thinking is concerned. Some days are better than others.
We still don't know anymore about the schedule for the MRI or the surgery. We should know more this week.
Maxine, John, Kody and DEBBIE are coming to Indiana this Thursday evening for our Christmas gatherings. She won't have much time here, so we are going to try to cram as much time in with her as possible without wearing her out. She probably won't have time to visit friends, but at least her family will be able to see her. We are so excited about finally getting to spend some time with her. My family hasn't seen her since two weeks before her surgery.
In proofing this post, I noticed how many times I said the word "Time" in that last paragraph. Funny how that little word can be so big in circumstances such as this one! I know so much is said about "quality time", but that's what we are going to make of it this week!
I'll be sure to keep you posted. Keep praying for her. We appreciate your all's prayers so much!
Todd

I can't believe this! This will be the second time I write this. John's computer lost everything that I had typed! Pray for his computer. It may not survive me!!!
Debbie went to see Dr. Holsapple yesterday. He wasn't really able to give much information. He is going to schedule another MRI to see how everything looks. After that is done, they will then be able to schedule her surgery to replace the bone flap.
He still seems to believe that the replacement will take care of Debbie's eyelid. It still is not open. However, if that doesn't take care of it, he said that plastic surgery will....
Speaking of Debbie's eyes, she has Maxine read everything for her. She still does not seem to see very well. Dr. Holsapple believes that will also improve over time.
John and Maxine have caught Debbie doing several things without her helmet. Things that she's not to do by herself. Things that have to do with water and a tub. It really has them on edge! John is hoping that the surgery is soon so they won't have to worry about the helmet anymore. Can't say I blame him!
We will be leaving tomorrow morning for Tennessee to sing. Then we will be flying (on the ground) back to Indiana to our home church to sing Friday night. Then we have Saturday to do all of our Christmas shopping with mom and Marjorie and Monica's family. Then, on Sunday, we have our last Christmas concert of the year at Connersville. I'll try to keep posting as much as possible.
As soon as I hear of the schedules for Debbie, I'll let you know so you can pray. Pray that her eyesight would continue to improve. As well as her cognitive skills! Pray for John and Maxine as well.
Todd

Just thought I'd write a little while I have time. I'm in Kentucky at the home of Tim and Claudette Eldridge. Just had some awesome Chicken Enchiladas. Man, that woman can cook! We'll sing at a church close to here in the morning, then at Tim's church tomorrow night. Then we will leave and go to Zanesville Ohio to drop off the baby sitter and stay at Monica's parent's house before returning to Indiana on Monday.
Maxine called in quite a tizzy on Thursday. Seems Kody was playing with his police car when he noticed the numbers "911" on it. He decided to see how those numbers worked on the phone. A couple minutes later, he decided to brag to his grandmother about what he had done. She wasn't too impressed. Shortly thereafter, the cops called back to make sure everything was alright. When Maxine called, she had to hang up because she started crying... I called her back to reassure her, then had a little chat with Kody over the phone....
Debbie's therapy is going pretty well. She seems to be doing pretty good. I haven't had a chance to find out much, but as soon as I do, I'll let you know.
Keep praying. Tell people about the website so they can get involved! Thanks.
Todd

Wednesday, December 8, 2004 2:30 PM CST

Talked to Maxine yesterday. And today. Debbie had both physical and speech yesterday. And today. The physical therapy is going so well that they plan to end that part of her therapy this week. She will have twelve sessions of speech therapy when all is said and done. That includes the cognitive therapy. I guess that's all insurance wants to pay for.
They have given her papers and other things to help her work on her thinking skills since they will not be able to continue therapy as long as they would have liked. These papers ask questions such as "Who visited you today?" She seems to get the answers pretty easy.
Maxine and Deb took Kody to school today. Maxine went back to get him. The therapists were there with Debbie, so Maxine felt like she could leave without having to worry about her.
I will be leaving tomorrow for North Carolina so I won't be able to post this weekend. Debbie goes to see her doctor Friday, so I'll try to let you know on Monday what took place.
Continue to hold Debbie up in prayer. She is making progress, but still needs a lot of prayer!
Todd

Monday, December 6, 2004 3:06 PM CST

Maxine called three or four times today. At least I know her cell phone is still in her possession. 'Course, that doesn't mean that she hasn't lost it a thousand times in the meantime!
Talked to Deb as well. She sounded tired but good. She still is more concerned about others than herself. She asked how I was doing. But I quickly turned the conversation back to herself.
She was having speech therapy as well as cognitive therapy today. I haven't heard how that went. Maxine was supposed to let me know but......
Sharon, the lady across the street, took Kody to school today for Maxine. Maxine hates to leave Debbie alone, so Sharon said she would be happy to do that. John's dad was to pick him up.
Maxine was distressed to find Debbie down in the basement this morning without her helmet. She was ironing Kody's school clothes.... That didn't leave Maxine too happy, as you can imagine.
She said there has been quite a bit of turn around for Debbie in the past few days. There has been some real improvement.
Debbie played for both services yesterday. She and John also sang a song in last night's service. Maxine said it went really well.
We've started our Christmas concerts. We will be in North Carolina and Kentucky this week. Next week, we will be in Tennessee and Indiana. We were in our home area yesterday. I've got to say that last night's service was probably the worst concert we've ever put on! We couldn't sing to save our lives! So this week is going to be spent practicing!
Well, my family and I are getting ready to make some home made Christmas candy!!!!! Fudge, peanut brittle, party mix, haystacks, corn flake chews, caramels, turtles, chocolate covered pretzels........ FAT GRAMS!!!! Yee Haw!!! Better run.
Keep on praying for Debbie. She has an appointment with her primary physician this Friday. Then, next Tuesday, she meets with Doctor Holsapple. We are praying that the rest of the tumor that was left behind will be gone! Please pray to that end.
Todd

Hi all. We have had some time to think and discuss what should be done about the web site. We have had a lot of people sign up for the newsletter, but we still feel that this site reaches more people. And that is important. So we've come to the conclusion that I will start posting again. It may be only every other day or so, but at least there will be news for you all. I will reserve the more urgent requests for the newsletter, so if you want to know those needs, feel free to sign up for the newsletter.
I talked to Maxine and Debbie a little bit ago. Debbie answered the phone when I called. Her voice sounds strong. She had just awakened from a nap. Kody and John were out working on the front porch. Maxine was who knows where.
I asked Debbie if they had started the cognitive therapy. She said that they hadn't, but were trying to get it arranged. She said they were having difficulty arranging it. I said, "So they haven't started cognitive therapy?" She said, "Yeah. Yesterday...." I asked for Maxine.
She said that they had indeed started yesterday. Maxine said that Debbie is doing better about remembering her helmet. Probably because Maxine bugs her so much about it. That's what Maxine said, not me!
She said that Debbie still struggles quite a bit with finding words. While watching a Gaither video, she got up and said, "I better go get my VIDEO helmet on."
Last Sunday evening, the pastors were called out to an emergency. One of the members of the church was having physical problems, so they had to go there. So most of the service was singing and testimonies. Debbie played for the service as well as the youth service before then. The same was done Wednesday evening and she played for that service as well. Maxine said it wore her out, but she did really well!
On the humorous side of things, Kody hollered for Maxine a couple of days ago. He said "Come and look, Grandma!" She went in to find that Kody had put a shirt on Nellie with the front legs of the dog through the sleeves and a pair of shorts on her back legs. For some reason, I don't think the dog was amused. I'm just trying to figure out where the tail went......
Anyway, as far as prayer goes, the cognitive therapy is where the concern is at. Debbie has regained alot of her strength. She helps around the house quite a lot. So it's the thought process that needs the prayer. Continue to pray for John as well, that God would continue to help him and give him strength both physically and emotionally.
Thanks!
Todd

I am surprised at the response I've received about no new journals. I must say it's not been an easy decision.
I do plan on posting on here the date of Debbie's surgery, once we find out. That way, you will know so you can pray.
I've discussed with my family to a great extent as to what can be done to keep you informed. The concern has been that a certain young lady who we've all been praying for will read about things on here that aren't necessary for her to know, if you know what I mean.
Someone suggested a newsletter sent via e-mail. I discussed this with my family, and we felt that was the way to go. I would probably send one out at least once a week, keeping you informed of Deb's progress as well as concerns that we may have.
If you would be interested in receiving such an e-mail, you may write me at the e-mail address posted on this web site. I will give a few days to get a list going before I start.
To those who aren't interested, just continue to hold Debbie up in prayer. We love her and want the best for her.
Todd

I can't sleep. Third night in a row. So I thought I'd go ahead and post. I'll be leaving here later this morning.
Debbie will be coming home sometime this morning. If she is not here when I leave, I'll go say goodbye to her at St. Camillus.
Kody is very anxious to see his mother come home for good. As are the rest of the family. It will be good for her to be here.
This will be the last journal I'll be writing. One reason is that it will be hard for me to update when I'm not here to see what is going on. The main reason is that there are some in the family who think that I should just give a general idea of what the need is to have you pray instead of being point blank. I feel that you all know the general reason to pray, so that really leaves me nothing to write except little happenings. To be honest, that is not the reason I started this journal. I felt God had given me a way to give you specific things to pray for. I know that I have included funny incidents, but that was to help us all keep our sanity. So, that said, I feel this is the best thing to do. I do reserve the right to post if something drastic happens. But I pray that there won't be the need!
Please continue to pray hard for Debbie. The tough times are certainly not over. There is much more that needs to be prayed for. Continue to post in the guestbook. I know she'll be checking it out in the coming week.
I'll miss writing about our lives here. You all have become a part of our family. I truly appreciate all that you have done for Debbie and her family. God will truly reward you for the things you have done!
Todd

For your information, Kody DID have school today. But he is off the rest of the week. Just thought you might like to know....
We got to St. Camillus just as John and Debbie as well as the physical therapist and Rocky and another lady were coming off the elevator. Rocky (Raquel is her real name) is a young woman who was at University when Deb was there. She was in a bad car accident and has had severe brain damage. She has come a long way though. We've found that in these situations, you tend to root for everyone there as well as your own loved one.
Anyhoo, back to what I was telling. They were all headed to the cafeteria to let Deb put on a concert for them. So we joined the audience as she performed a half hour concert. She did terrific! We clapped after each song.
We are here waiting on Charlie and David to arrive. As soon as they get here, we are going to go back to St. Camillus to see Debbie again. David hasn't seen her since two and a half weeks past her surgery. So I believe that it will be a little emotional for David to see her again.
Back to Kody a little bit. John is a little concerned that people may think he is not a good father with the way things have been with Kody and school! We have assured him that people understand the circumstances and that anyone would have a struggle with trying to juggle everything! That said, maybe say a little extra prayer for him when you think of it. He is really under a lot of stress. I would say more, but I have a certain person standing behind me that thinks I shouldn't. So I guess you'll have to pray blindly.....
Not much else to share. Well, there is, but you know Maxine!
Todd

Sunday, November 21, 2004 6:58 PM CST

Debbie sang two specials in church tonight. "The Lord is Good" and "Thank You, Lord, For Your Blessings on Me." John and I sang the first song with her, and they sang a duet on the second. It was pretty emotional on the first song. Pastor Dickerson had all stand and gave praise to God for what He has done in Debbie's life so far.
Debbie's voice was a little weak, and sometimes she "searched" for her note, but overall, she did awesome! She even played the piano and sang on the second song! So that was pretty neat to see. We are very happy tonight.
We all took a nap this afternoon. That was nice... After the meal of beef and dumplings that Maxine made (in my honor...) (at John's request), we all felt stuffed enough to rest! I think Kody was even coaxed into taking a nap....
Well, not much else to share. Keep on praying for Debbie. God is definitely working. We appreciate your prayers!
Todd

Ok. I feel like every muscle and bone in my body is screaming! Debbie is home for the day, so we have been putting up her Christmas decorations while I'm here to help. I cut down their tree and put it up. Ok, ok. So I took it out of the box from Wal-Mart and put it together! Cutting it down just seemed so much more manly!
Can you believe John has never had an artificial Christmas tree??? He doesn't have a clue how to put one together! He honestly thought you took it out of the box and it just unfolded and there you had your tree! Not so with me! It has to be perfectly shaped if I do it! I'm extremely picky. But I love doing it. It took me around four hours to do the tree.
Now for you that know me, you know I have not much patience! Well, can I say that I have never seen such a mess of lights as what came out of that box today! It took an hour (NO LIE) to get those things untangled! John said he would have given up and bought new, but I'm also very stubborn. You think I was going to let those things win??? Un-uh! No way, no how!
While I did the tree, Maxine and Deb did the mantle and other things. Deb hasn't missed a beat with doing her normal things here at home. She's always trying to clean something up! We have to watch her like a hawk!
After we finished the decorations, John took us to Cracker Barrel. I demolished my diet in one meal! Well, not too bad. Just don't think the onion rings did any good for me. Oh well!
Debbie seems to do much better when she is home. She still struggles for words at times, but as a whole she seems more herself here at home.
I'm going home next Tuesday for the month of December. John, Monica and I are doing Christmas concerts again this year, so I'll be pretty busy each week with that. I'm sure going to miss Debbie and Kody and John. But I'll keep in touch so I can keep you all updated.
Todd

Friday, November 19, 2004 7:35 PM CST

I know that I've started several of these with the words "You know it's going to be one of those days when...", but today is just that! I guess we have alot of those up here! Life is absolutely not normal!
I arose earlier than I wanted to take Kody to school. We were actually early! Yeah, but that was the second time in a row!!!!! When we walked in the front door, the man at the office desk gave me a strange look. I thought, "We aren't THAT early!"
I noticed that as we passed each class, the lights were off and the chairs were on top of the desks. But we trodded on. We went through the double doors where Kody's classroom is, and the lights were off and no one was around! We looked at each other, looked around, looked at each other and shrugged! I decided there must be something amiss. I knew it couldn't be the rapture 'cause it is a Baptist school! Ha! Just kiddin'!
Well, I began to get a weird feeling about things, so Kody and I quietly walked out a side door so as not to be noticed! That's when I saw the sign at the front of the school: Parent/Teacher day. November the 19th!!! Kody had NO SCHOOL!!!! YES! THIS IS THE SECOND TIME!!!! Come to find out, John knew, but forgot to tell me.... Can't wait to get my hands on him..... Oh. Was that out loud?!
Maxine and I then searched all over the house to find out what home health service Debbie had last time. St. Camillus had to know by today so they could call them. We never were able to find the pamphlet they had left. We called John but couldn't get through to him. I had told him last night I needed the information for today and he said he would let me know, but..... So we just decided to go ahead to St. Camillus and tell them to choose since John had acted like he didn't care who would do it.
I went in search of the head therapist while Maxine and Kody searched for Debbie. I found Debbie, but Maxine found no one! She even lost Kody and me in the process! No surprise there! I finally found the therapist only to discover that John had called her earlier this morning and gave her the information! I'm gonna ring his neck!.... Oops. Out loud again.
Well, anyhow. On to Debbie. She was doing better today. She carried on some good conversation and even started some of it. She has a great memory. She remembered that her dad and brother are coming up next week. And what day they are to get here. She told her pastors that while they visited today.
She is really really really looking forward to coming home for good! We found out that they are going to continue physical therapy here at home as long as insurance will allow. That includes cognitive, speech and occupational therapy as well as the physical. So we are happy about that.
Her eye seems to be opening up a lot easier in the past few days. That is very encouraging.
Keep on praying. We know God has not forgotten her, and we hope you all don't either. If you know of anyone that is not reading this, please ask them to pray for her as well. We would appreciate all the prayer we can have on Debbie's behalf!
Todd

Before I tell about Debbie, I'd like to update you on Jacob. They have done all sorts of tests and cannot find what caused his problems yesterday. I talked to Bro. Evans today and he said that technically, they lost Jacob yesterday. But they were able to revive him.
They put him under for an MRI this morning at 9:30 and at 3:30 this afternoon, he had not awakened yet. They are a litle concerned about that. He seems to just want to sleep all of the time. Please keep praying for him and the Evans family.
Now on to Deb. We received a call from St. Camillus this morning. They are being forced to release Debbie next Tuesday because of insurance. They don't feel she is ready to leave, but John's insurance feels that if she is able to walk, who cares about her mental state.
For the first time today, the head therapist admitted that she has doubts as to whether Debbie will ever fully regain her cognitive skills. That was a major blow. Yes, we've wondered, but to hear it from someone who knows..... That will take the wind out of your sails.
They are going to see if insurance will pay for home health to come in and work with her. Pray that they will do that much for her.
Debbie is excited to come home. She was crying this morning, just hating the fact she has to be there. We haven't let on that we don't feel she's ready. We are trying to stay as positive in front of her as possible.
In the humor department, last evening, Kody just barged into my room. His daddy said "Kody, you should knock before you go in!" So, Kody shuts my door and knocks! A little too late!
Well, I must say I'm not feeling too much humor today. We must admit we don't feel the prayers like we used to. Please hold Debbie up in prayer like never before. She's struggling with the eye issue. We are struggling with the fact that she may never totally be herself again. We know God can change things, but we need to know that you are praying for her once again! Thanks.
Todd

Hello. This is John Myers reporting this time. Todd wanted me to let you know that there is a little boy in North Carolina that is in desperate need of prayer. His name is Jacob Evans and he is the 4 year old son of Bo and Amy Evans. He had been diagnosed with leukemia some time ago. Today he went in to what appeared to be siezures and they are worried that there is some bleeding. He is unresponsive and unconscious. As a new parent, I cannot imagine what the family must be going through. Please pray. You all have been so steadfast in your prayers for Deb, and now we ask you to extend the favor to yet another family in need. Thanks, John

Tuesday, November 16, 2004 7:06 PM CST

You know.. I thought taking care of ONE four year old was bad! Well... Maxine and I have had TWO four year old boys tonight! John's sister, Jo, and he went to eat with Debbie tonight on an outing planned by St. Camillus. So we inherited another child, Chase!
We've heard several squeals of delight and have proceeded to run to see what was up. Most times than not, it was trouble! You ever seen a dog chew gum??? Nellie did tonight. It's now digesting somewhere in her stomach. Courtesy of Chase. Ever seen dresser drawers made into a dog house? They were trying to tear them apart to do just that. That's a building that will not be completed. Funny, where there's been trouble, Nellie's been in the center of it.
Debbie's been quite confused the past two days. Fact is, she didn't make much sense at all last evening when we arrived. Don't know if she was just tired or what, but she still seemed confused today. I saw that she was to have therapy at 2:30, but she told me they switched it around. I asked if she was sure and she said yes. But, twenty till three, here comes a nurse asking why she wasn't at therapy.
I know that the healing process can take a while, but frankly, we are really concerned. We know there has been brain damage. The doctors said so. So we don't know if Debbie will ever be the same. Please pray very hard about this. I don't want people to tell us we should thank God for what he has done and not to worry. We do thank God, but it's only human to want her to be normal. So please just pray!
Todd

Sister Wallick wrote me yesterday. I thought that I would just copy the letter and post it on here. She writes so eloquently. She says it better than I can. She writes a request at the end of this letter, so those of you who feel it on their hearts to respond, we would appreciate it.

"We went to see Deb this afternoon. We were with her for just about 2 hrs. She conversed real well and only had to stop and think a couple of times. (I'm having to do stop and think, and I haven't had a brain tumor). :o) Sr. Dickerson and I didn't say anything about Deb's eye appointment on Thursday, but she brought it up and told us all about it. She did seem real disappointed when she talked about not being able to read. You know how she loves to read. But we reminded her that there are books on tape and that seemed to brighten her up. We talked at length about it and let her talk and express herself. It would just be wonderful if her friends could buy her some good Christian books on tape so she could have them while she is recovering. She likes books by Jan Karon, Janette Oke and Francine Rivers real well.

I reminded her of Fanny Crosby and that there are still so many things she CAN do: play the piano, sing, even teach Sunday School. And I told her one thing doctors don't take into consideration is: "But God". The Lord has answered so many prayers for us in the past few months, that I wish all of us would take a fresh new hold in prayer and ask the Lord to touch Deb's optical nerve and bring healing in that area. You remember how the surgeon told us the optical was stretched so much over the tumor? Well, I know that God can un-stretch it!!! :o) So let's just take fresh new courage in prayer and faith and "cry out" to the Lord for help in this area. Many times in scripture, all some people could do was "cry" to God. Matter-a-fact, God hears even animals that "cry". Listen to what Psalm 147:9 says: "He (God) gives to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry." I ask Deb if she was able to talk to the Lord about all of this, and she said: (these were her words) "I just haven't been able to cry out like I would like to". That is what turned my thoughts toward this matter of "crying". Deb is working very hard to get back, and she is in an environment where she can't really pray OR cry, but we can help in that area. Todd, ask her friends and family who know the Lord to do that crying for her. Let's just pour our hearts out to the Lord and ask His healing touch for Deb's optical nerve and eyesight. GOD IS ABLE. After all, if He hears a baby raven (in Psalms 147:9), He will hear His children. He has already done so much for us. I am trying to praise Him every day for so many answers on her behalf. But He will not chide or rebuke us for asking Him again. After all, He said: "Ask largely". Let's do it, and watch Him work. Praise God from whom ALL blessings flow!"

Don't know if you all noticed her writing about the books on tape. I think that is a great idea! So if you want to do that as well, the address is just below this paragraph. But, most importantly, let's remember the last part of her letter!

I talked to John last evening. He gave me a little more information than Maxine had.
I guess Debbie's optic nerve has had a lot of damage due to the surgery. They aren't giving much, if any hope at all of improvement in either eye. However, he said that her eyelid will definitely be able to function whether it happens naturally or if they have to do something surgically.
Debbie took the news very well. John, however, has been struggling with it. He said that he had a good cry after he left her off at St. Camillus. I know this is not easy. We are happy that she can see, trust me, but we are human, and our hearts ache at the thought that she won't have total use of her eyes.
I find it amazing how many people have said that we should just be happy that she can see. Yes we are, but who wouldn't want to be whole?? I have to hold back the urge to say, "Ok, let's take your eyesight in one eye and see how you handle it!" But, I behave myself.
It will have a major affect on her life. She may not be able to drive anymore. There are alot of things that will have to change in her life. And, while life does go on, it won't be easy.
Maxine and I plan on going back to New York Monday morning. So we'll once again covet your prayers while we travel.
Keep praying for Debbie. They seem to be adding more therapy sessions weekly. They are really working her hard!

Just spoke with Maxine a minute ago. Ok. More like several minutes ago, but who's counting...
She had spoken with John. The eye exam was a long one. I think the appointment was at Eleven, and they were just getting out at twenty after One!
There was good news and not so good news. First, the good. She has Twenty/Twenty vision in her right eye. She has, however, no peripheral vision in that eye. The not so good news is that she is legally blind in her left eye. She can see movement, but can't make out what it is that she is seeing.
The eye doctor did say that if putting the bone flap back in doesn't help bring up her eye lid, there is something that can be done that will remedy that. So it is a relief to know that her eye won't always look that way.
Debbie had SIX therapy sessions yesterday! John said that she didn't seem the least bit tired last evening, even after all of that work! So that would definitely show some improvement on her part.
We've been keeping busy while we've been home. The other night while we were moving my belongings, mother and Maxine decided to make Chili while we were working. Maxine asked what we needed. I started going through the list of things needed for chili. Beef, onions, tomato juice, kidney stones........ Yeah. Maxine caught that. She insisted that I put that on here. In fact, she has a gun to my head making me type it right now! No she doesn't! But she did threaten me if I didn't!
Well, anyway, please pray that if it's God's will that Debbie's eyesight would continue to improve. We hope that it will. And your prayers can make the difference!

Heard from Sister Wallick today. Haven't heard from John, so I'll pass on the information from her!
They visited Deb last evening for a couple hours. She seemed to be in good spirits. Sister Wallick always makes it a point to ask if Debbie's down about ANYTHING! Debbie said she was not.
She talked about Christmas, the snow (I'm still jealous!) and the kitchen sink..... Ok, maybe not that! But just about everything else!
John and Kody came up at around eight, so they had prayer with Debbie and left so John, Deb and Kody could spend some time together.
Tomorrow, Debbie has an appointment with the eye doctor. Please pray that everything goes well. I'm not sure what all is to go on, but I think they are going to at least get her new glasses so she can see better!
Well, I must needs get going to church. Remember to pray tomorrow for Debbie.
Todd

John called this morning. I am so jealous... They have SNOW!!! Wouldn't you know it! After I leave! And God knew I wanted some! Maybe He's just getting it ready for me when I get back!
He said there wasn't much new with Debbie. She was really quiet last evening. He asked her if she was down, but she said she wasn't. But he just couldn't get much out of her.
Kody stayed at Chase's house last night. He's been wanting to go there for a few days now. I guess he finally got his wish.
We spent all day yesterday moving my belongings to my new abode. I was up till three this morning putting things away and hanging pictures. Then this evening, we put up my Christmas tree. I know it's early, but since I'll be gone until Thanksgiving, I needed to get it done. I'll have mom and dad's tree to put up as well as John and Monica's as well as Marjorie's as well as Deb and John's! So I thought I better get a head start!
Well, not much else to tell. I'll try to keep you updated!

Maxine strikes again......... Have your nerves ever been so obliterated by something so that every square inch of your skin is jumping uncontrollably and you just sit there and let it twitch??? Well, that happened to me this morning.
Sister Wallick came to the back door to give us Sister Dickerson's famous apple salad for dinner. Maxine (second time in two days she's done this) opens the door without any thought as to whether the alarm was set or not. Yep, it starts beeping to alert her that indeed it is set. She shuts the door on Sister Wallick and saunters into my room to tell me that she has done it once again.
Last time, she alerted me early enough that I got to it in time. Not so today! I'm almost to it when the shrill alarm starts alerting us that we are in trouble. I'm standing there pounding in the numbers, but it won't shut off. Over and over and over, the numbers go in, but, alas, it won't quit! Visions of police cars once again surrounding the house are flashing in my mind.
Maxine opens the door to let Sister Wallick in to try. I'm not quite that presentable, so I rush into the little room to hide. Thankfully, she gets it to shut off.
I'm telling you, people, that was an hour ago, and I still can't stop shaking. That alarm is L.O.U.D!!! I've come to the conclusion that since I took Maxine's cell phone away, she has had to come up with another way to get attention! I think I'll give her cell phone back! At least I'll still have my ear drums left. Can't say so for my sanity no matter which way I go!
We are going to go get Debbie in about a half hour. We plan on eating an early dinner so we can spend a little time with her before Maxine and I leave.
Pray for us as we travel. Also, continue to keep Debbie in your prayers. She was really quiet yesterday. She doesn't have the capabilities as of yet to carry on a real conversation. So pray that the Lord would touch her in that regard.
Appreciate your prayers!
Todd

Another busy day at the Fike residence. I finished up the laundry today. Nine loads, grand total.... I don't care if I ever see another dirty towel in my life! Yes, I know I'm dreaming.
John picked up Deb around noon. They brought home some subs and the neighbor across the street gave us pizza and BBQ wings! Plus, we had strawberries and ice cream! My diet took a screaming nose dive!
Debbie and Maxine took a nap while John and Kody cleaned up the front yard. The work that was done on the house left a nice pile of mud in the front yard, so he tried to clean off the sidewalk and driveway so we could at least park up there again.
We went over to the church and she played the piano for us. We sang a couple songs together as well. She really sounded good!
Debbie wanted to go to Sacred Melody, the bookstore where she used to work. So we took her there tonight. The people who worked there were so happy to see her. They thanked the Lord right then and there.
She is still here for another hour. She's doing so good today. We hate to see her go back, but what has to be has to be. We don't get to make the rules.
We are going to pick her up around ten tomorrow. The church people want her to come to church so bad, but we just don't feel that she is up to it yet. When we leave tomorrow afternoon for Indiana, that will give John and Deb some time alone.
Pray for us as we travel tomorrow. We would really appreciate it!
Todd

Friday, November 5, 2004 7:49 PM CST

Debbie didn't have any therapy this afternoon, so we went up around noon and stayed till three today. The Modlin's, a family from Deb's church came and visited for a bit.
Debbie seemed to be doing rather well today! She seemed much more herself than yesterday. She is able to get up and walk around now. Without the aid of a walker. And, boy does she move!
She said therapy went pretty good today. She only had two sessions. She tested her own blood sugar while we were there and it was only 81! So we were happy about that. It appears that the sugar once again was just a side affect of the steroids she was on.
She gets to come home for eight hours tomorrow and eight on Sunday. We are all looking forward to that. Deb's a real trooper.
We came back home to clean up this house. This week, some work has been done on the house. The workers made it nice and muddy from all the rain we've had, so, much time was spent on sweeping and cleaning floors! They had to remove the washer and dryer while they worked, so I couldn't do laundry all week. So guess what I'm getting caught up on??? Six loads so far and counting! I'm really wishing they were upstairs instead of down in the basement!
Since Deb is going to be in St. Camillus for four more weeks, Maxine and I have decided to go back home for a week. I have to take care of some health issues as well as move into my new home. Since Maxine is looking at being out here quite a while, she is going to go along for the ride and get some more time at home.
I'll let you know how tomorrow goes! Keep us in your prayers.
Todd

Thursday, November 4, 2004 4:05 PM CST

We went up early today to see Debbie. Charlie is leaving for home as I type this and he wanted to be with her awhile before he left. Pray for Charlie as he travels.
We are a little confused about something. Debbie has said in the last few weeks that things taste too salty. Now, she says that she can't taste anything. She ate her meal and said she couldn't taste it, but then a few minutes later said it tasted good. Later on, Kody gave her a taste of his sour candy and she puckered up. I asked if it tasted sour and she said yes, but it was good. She still insisted, though, that she can't taste. So we don't exactly know what she's thinking.
She did really well in therapy today. She still has problems with the balancing part of it but she said her speech and occupational therapy went well. They had her and her roommate slice and cook potatoes for their breakfast tomorrow. The regular cook will make home fries for them in the morning. We sat and watched while they did this. Deb remembered how to do it, but her roommate kept putting her finger under the knife. Fortunately, the therapist was keeping an eye on her!
We found out today that Deb will be there for another FOUR weeks.... We were a little disappointed in that fact. They just think she has too much to go before she is allowed to come home for good. They will let her come home the day of Thanksgiving, but then she will have to return.
You already know what I'm going to ask you to do. Pray! Thank you for doing so.
Todd

I'll warn you. I don't know how this journal may turn out! I'm exhausted. I think today was one of the most emotionally wrenching experiences of my life. With the funeral, add on staying up all night keeping an ear tuned to the elections, it was too much.
It's not an easy thing watching a young mother with her children, ages 12,8,6 and 1 walk in to have her young husband's funeral. To watch this young preacher's people grieving over the death of their pastor. To look on as his parent's and sister mourn over losing their only son and brother. And to lose a friend. He was so loved, and it was evident.
Please keep Esther Dotson and her children and family in your prayers. It's not going to be easy to go on. It's not easy to understand why this had to happen. Quite truthfully, it's impossible to understand.
We went straight to St. Camillus. We only stayed there around twenty minutes. Debbie seemed to be in good spirits today. She asked about Esther and seemed to be pretty sad about that.
She said that the therapy went well today. She told Charlie that she can't wait until they can "fix her face so I'll look normal." That appears to really be bothering her. I think it will be fine once they put her new "bone" back in. But until then (January), she's going to have to deal with this.
I think I'm going to hit the hay. I'm exhausted. Did I mention that?
Keep on praying for Debbie. She's having good days and bad. She appreciates knowing that you are continuing to hold her up in prayer!

Well, here we are! It's election day! Well, maybe the beginning of "Election DayS!!" I can feel the acid rising in my stomach! The ulcer is working over time!
Didn't get to see much of Debbie today. She had FOUR therapies scheduled back to back. Group therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy. Man, that would be too much for me! But she took it like a trooper.
Maxine, Kody and I came back to wait on Charlie to arrive. He got here at around 6:30. We left and went back to see Debbie. She had just come back from voting. Thankfully, they didn't have to wait to vote. It took all of fifteen minutes.
John has been really nervous about what is going to happen in the election. He asked Debbie if she wanted a shower tonight. She said "No thanks! As jittery as you are, I'd have no skin left once you were finished!" So we just sat and listened to the returns.
We are going to Tim Dotson's funeral tomorrow. We are leaving rather early (Maxine's idea) in the morning. We'll be getting back in time to go see Debbie. I don't know that I'll have time to post on here. It all depends.
Keep on praying! She was much better today. And so was Deb! NO! Just kiddin'! I forgot that I was not talking about Maxine! Debbie did seem much better today. What little I got to see her.

Monday, November 1, 2004 10:38 PM CST

I know I've been running late getting these updates on this week. I'll try to do better!
We went to see Debbie this afternoon. We've noticed that the past couple of days, she has started to get words mixed up again. I know to some people it wouldn't be noticed, but since we are family, we notice a difference. I know some think that since she's doing this good that we shouldn't worry about these things. But I guess we are human, and when we see these things happening, we have a little concern. But, we are trying to just believe that it's just "one of those days!"
They've had problems with her getting up and out of bed on her own. Therefore, they've installed an alarm on her bed so that when she does get out, they know! I discovered that alarm by myself today. I sat down on her bed and it went off! Boy, it's loud! The nurse responded rather quickly!
She was not a happy camper to find out it was me. She was rude the rest of the night! Debbie's had great nurses for the most part, but this one........ She chewed Debbie out for having to go to the restroom during her meal this evening. She said the timing wasn't "good!" I told the nurse that I guessed when nature calls.... nature CALLS! She smarted off to me as well, saying that Deb should have told her before she brought her the meal, so Maxine and I just thought we better go!
We came home and relaxed. It was a bit of a stressful day today. This morning, Kody could not be found. Maxine had been in the basement ironing. I was in the little room getting ready to go to see Debbie. I heard Maxine calling for Kody, going upstairs, downstairs, front porch, backyard, and back to the basement. Nothing... I quickly dressed and we went through this house looking in closets and everywhere we could think of! Maxine was starting to panick, and I wasn't far behind! After fifteen minutes, Maxine was getting ready to call John when she looked under the dining room table, and there he was, hiding. We did not see the humor in it.... Neither did he..... I don't think he'll pull that one again! He did tell me later that if he had pulled that on his dad, the punishment would have been bigger! Now how do you discipline a kid like that!?!
I have to say that Kody has been the best child through all of this. He hasn't taken advantage of the situation and acted out. If you tell him to do something, or not to do something, he is most usually more than willing to comply. We couldn't ask for a better behaved child.
He did draw a picture of his family tonight. He left out Deb. We asked him where she was, so he drew another picture with Deb in a hospital bed. That was tough for us to see. My heart has been broken several times in thinking of what it must be like for him to have his home disrupted for this length of time. Yet it's only every now and then that he complains. He seems to have the understanding of an adult. I wish he didn't have to. I don't want him to lose his childhood. So we try to allow him as much time to play in his house as possible.
Keep praying for Deb, John and Kody. And us! We covet your prayers.
Oh! VOTE!!!!!! It is so important! May God have His way!
Todd

Sunday, October 31, 2004 9:47 PM CST

Sunday was a good day on so many levels! I'll try to tell about each one.
First off, Debbie came home again! That's a definite positive! You can just tell she's so happy to be out of the nursing care environment she has been in for the past two months. Yeah, it's only been two months. Feels like a year or more!
Debbie just sat around after the meal and relaxed. Joanna did some "plucking" on Deb's eyebrows. Don't know what it is with women and their eyebrows! Ok ok! So I take care of mine as well.... Just don't tell anyone! But Debbie really enjoyed her time just sitting and spending time with her family. John's mom and dad, sister Jo, her husband Gary, and their son Chase (what a cutie) were all here.
Next, the meal was awesome! I know I told a little of what we were going to have in the last entry, but allow me to relive what I so enjoyed today! Beef and pot pie, mashed taters, fried green beans (sorry not allowed to have those Maxine), macaroni and cheese with extra velveeta (we won't tell who had the most helpings, will we Joanna?!?), baked beans and weiner coins (Maxine's fiber), salad (awesome, Joanna!), relish tray, home made rolls (incredible, Sis. Fike!), cake (sorry, didn't have room Sis. Fike), pumpkin pie (sorry, didn't have room Sis. Fike), and I think I may have gotten a little paper plate in there as well (the reason I didn't have room, Sis. Fike!!!) Tomorrow, I'm back on the wagon (cart/buggy)!!!
For our excitement today, we turn to Chase and Kody. They were in the basement playing while we ate (God knows, playing was much more important than eating!) All of a sudden, Kody and Chase come upstairs screaming! Did I mention they were soaking wet?? Seems Chase, acting like a monkey, grabbed a pipe to swing on and pulled it apart! So John, Gary and I go running down to see what can be done. Ok. John and Gary ran! I walked. Thankfully, it was pulled apart at the joint so it wasn't too bad to fix. So much for the sofa downstairs! Oh well. It can dry out.
John took Debbie back to St. Camillus around five-thirty. Maxine went with her and stayed while John came back and went to service tonight. They had a pastor appreciation service this evening. They honored Sis. Wallick and Sis. Dickerson as well as John and Deb since they are youth pastors. They had EVERYONE come up to speak about them including the four four year olds in the church! Yes, there are FOUR four year old BOYS in that church! Those people spent two solid hours bragging on their pastors then had them gather around the altar for prayer with them!
Now to the interesting (and best) point of the day! We (John and I) thought the other one was picking up Maxine at St. Camillus!!!! I'm sitting here minding my own business while John is out taking people home, both of us enjoying the peace and quiet........... But the phone had to ring and bring me to the harsh reality that Maxine is on the other end quite upset that we had forgotten her! So I guess serenity doesn't last forever!
Well, we've had fun this weekend having Debbie home. Now tomorrow, we go back to the daily grind of going in to see her there. But she is a bright spot. The world around her in the rehab may be dreary, but Debbie lights her world!
Keep on praying.
Todd

Sunday, October 31, 2004 8:01 AM CST

Just thought I'd let you all know that I was able to get the cd-rom working last evening. So the new pictures are up!
We are getting ready to go to church. Maxine has to sing a special and I have to play for her. John is going to pick Debbie up a little early so she can come home and relax in a bubble bath before we eat. She said that sounded SO good! Been a while since she's been able to do that. I guess you don't realize how much the small things matter until you don't have them anymore!
Maxine is preparing a feast fit for a king! She's making beef and square noodles (we call it pot pie) with taters, fried green beans, corn (for those who don't care for fried green beans), mac and cheese. Joanna's bringing a lettuce salad. Sis. Fike is bringing home made rolls and two desserts! So much for the diet again today! Oh, did I mention that Maxine is too lazy to use dishes! We get to use paper plates!!! *sigh* I guess nothing is too good for our Debbie.......
Well, I know this is short, but it is going to be a busy day. I better get going or Maxine may have some words to share with me!
Todd

Saturday, October 30, 2004 5:53 PM CDT

Today has been a GREAT day! Debbie arrived here around fifteen till two. She was so happy to be home! You could just see it in her eye. It was so great to see her sitting in her chair once again!
We waited a little while, then she decided she was hungry and wanted to go to Colorado Mining Co. It has a mean rotisserie chicken sandwich! BBQ sauce and Monterey Jack cheese... Mmm mmm Good! We were concerned about whether she would think it was too salty, but she loved it.
John went into the kitchen and I knew that wasn't good news. So I summoned our waitress. I asked what John had said to her, but they both denied talking to each other. But, a little later, I heard her say to someone else in the kitchen (we were right by the door) that she needed singers. Seems John talked to another waitress. Well, I was finished eating, so I told Maxine "I'm out of here!" So I went out in the foyer. All of a sudden, I hear this racket, and sure enough, here come about eight women....... towards ME! One had a cake, not a piece but a whole cake! Another had a cowboy hat with HORNS on it! She slammed it on my head and another girl took a polaroid picture of me with the hat on! To say the least, I was mortified! And the picture looked horrid! John refuses to let me touch the picture. He's afraid that I'll take it and destroy it. I shudder to think of what he is going to do with it! Maxine seems to think it's poetic justice for all the things I told on her.... WHATEVER!
Debbie came back here and sat a while, then John took her back to St. Camillus. I left to get some pictures that I had taken in to have developed. I had planned to put them on the website tonight, but the cd-rom quit working. John Lane across the street is going to come over and fix it, so hopefully I'll be able to put the new pictures on tomorrow.
A couple days ago, we bought Kody some Play Dough. That night, Grandma Fike, Grandma Stalker, John and I played with it just as much as Kody! I think we may be reverting to our childhood!
I've got to say, today was very good for us all. It lifted our spirits. Made us feel like we were a little bit more normal! She gets to come home tomorrow for a few hours and eat dinner with us.
God's working. Thanks for your prayers. Keep it up! We sure appreciate it!
Todd

Friday, October 29, 2004 6:38 PM CDT

Sorry I'm so late in posting today. I think the day that started yesterday ran on into today. But I'm hanging in there... To translate, Maxine left her cell phone somewhere again and never thought of it till we were far away. She left it at St. Camillus. So John is to pick it up tonight.
Debbie had another busy day. Therapy this morning. Some of it went ok, some did not. Questions like "What's the difference between salt and pepper? What do they have in common?" Couldn't answer them. So I guess (and I'm probably wrong) that it would be the cognitive skills involved there. That would be her main struggle. She does great on the physical part.
When we arrived, they were having a "paint the pumpkins" party. Deb was painted to look like a clown. One man had a snake painted on his face. Glad it wasn't Debbie! Of course, Debbie's pumpkin looked the best! After they finished, they had dessert for them.
We took her outside for a bit since it was so nice. The paint on her face really was bothering her, so we took her in to wash it off. So the outdoor adventure didn't last long.
She's doing really good with her eating skills. She doesn't struggle with that anymore. Her tastes have definitely changed. John has tried to take her some of her favorite foods, but she will take one bite and not want it.
Keep on praying for her. Maxine made the statement today that we haven't seen her smile once since we've been back. She had been doing that quite a bit at the hospital. But she is better than she was at the hospital, and for that we are thankful!

Thursday, October 28, 2004 5:45 PM CDT

You know it's going to be one of those days when the first words spoken to you by another being in the house are "Nellie is not in the backyard and will not answer!" So, still clothed in my PJs, I head out into the backyard area to look for her. Yes, there she is, in the next block, minding everyone else's business... Not paying any heed to my bleeting call! That is, not until the yard owner started to kick her. Then she took off across the street in front of a car. Yeah, I have a few more gray hairs this evening. I finally grabbed her, but Maxine thought and voiced the opinion that I should have let her go. I tried to cover Nellie's ears so she couldn't hear, but truth be told, Nellie hasn't spoken a word since to Maxine!
Now on to what matters. We'll get back to the zaniness later on in this journal.
Debbie is still improving. Her therapy sessions went really good today. The only thing she really struggled with was putting one foot directly in front of the other on the line. She kept losing her balance. But Maxine can't do it either, which she so deftly demonstrated!
They are really working her hard! They have one therapy session right after another. They did have three scheduled in a row, but thought the better of it. So they canceled her last session today.
She is really looking forward to getting out of there. I mean this weekend! Well, I think she just wants to get out of there PERIOD! But she knows that it is best for her to remain there until she is better. She still is not totally herself. She comprehends things, but she doesn't seem to get the full impact of what we are telling her, if that makes sense.
Her hair is growing so fast! It seems such a shame that it will have to come off again in January. But what has to be has to be.
In the continuing saga of "The Missing Cell Phone", last evening Maxine uttered those almost INfamous words "I can't find my cell phone!" So, everything ceased and we went to work finding her phone. Finally, the bright idea of calling it arose. So I dialed the number. I heard it ringing, but it kept moving around. Finally, when Maxine stood beside me, I heard it loud and clear! It was in her POCKET!! I tell you folks, she is losing it!
We won't mention about John locking himself out of the car at St. Camillus last evening and me taking the extra set of keys to him.....
Well, I'll quit telling on people for the time being and let you all go back to what you were doing. Keep remembering Debbie in your prayers!
Todd

Thought I would just copy and paste this from an e-mail from Tim Dotson's aunt. Since we haven't been up to see Deb yet and there's nothing to report. I know some of you are interested. I'll have something later this afternoon on Debbie.

Some of you may have heard of my nephew, Tim Dotson, going to be with the Lord this afternoon. He and his little family of 4 and wife Esther were in PA on the route to IN for a Youth Challenge retreat this weekend. This was a vision of Tim's to unite the holiness Bible Colleges and not to have a competing atmosphere. Just a united front. His dream has grown to a yearly event looked forward to by many young teens and college students from most of the eastern US.

In w. Pa they stopped at a rest stop or service station on the turnpike and Tim did not return from the restroom. Esther became alarmed after too much lapse in time and sent someone in to check. They didn't see him, but upon second checking found him, collapsed and not breathing.

The hospital worked 45 minutes trying to revive him and could not. This appears to be the same type of incident as he had a few years back and they feared losing him then. I surely don't understand the medical reasons behind all of it, but that incident was an ischemic colon where part of the colon loses it's blood supply and dies. He had another incident which was a close call.

We will not at this time put out rumors, as some are floating and I do not think are accurate.

His assistant youth pastor was also on his way but about 1/2 hr. ahead of them...word was gotten to them and they returned and were at the Greensburgh hospital with Esther and the 4 children when the Dr. told her they could not revive him. Also, the pastor of a Greensburg Church of God Holiness, Rev. Wm. Fish and his wife were asked to go be with her. I understand they took them to their home just a few miles on the edge of town. Since then they have proceeded to OH to Tim's parents, Ruth and Glenn Dotson. They planned to meet Esther and the children and be home around midnight.

WE DO NOT KNOW ANY ARRANGEMENTS UNTIL TOMORROW....DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE FUNERAL WILL BE. I am sure his church in Gratz, PA is in shock. Such a loved couple and so beautiful with a wonderful spirit. Tim had such a winning way about him.

You who attend MM Retreat will know the Dotson's as the ones who take charge of the music. Their only son. It is only human to ask "why", but Ruth told me this evening when asking the Lord why, He seemed to say to her, "Why not you?" We sometimes feel we should be exempt from the hard knocks of life, but they come to God's children, too. How wonderful they know he is in heaven.

Tim has been pastoring in Gratz, PA for several years and they have just dedicated a brand new church only a couple of weeks ago. TIM WAS SUCH A BRIGHT SPOT IN OUR FAMILY....WE COULD ALL BE SO PROUD TO CLAIM HIM AS OUR OWN. NOW THE LORD HAS CLAIMED HIM AND WE HURT, BUT PLEASE PRAY FOR WIFE, ESTHER, THE 4 CHILDREN, PARENTS AND SISTER KIM.

We may never understand this, but we trust a God who knows what He is doing. Many will be the hours when it will be dark. Please hold them up in prayer. This was such a beautiful family, a beautiful marriage, and an exemplary Christian couple.

Was up to see Debbie for a couple hours today. She was in therapy for most of the time. They had her fixing cups of tea, which she drank some of! Had her walking quite a bit. Plus they did her speech therapy. She said she did much better today in that. She's in really good spirits.
Found out this afternoon that one of her closest friend's husband passed away today. Esther (Edwards) Dotson's husband Tim. They were on their way from Pennsylvania to Indiana for Youth Challenge which Tim is the head of. They have around 1200 kids come from all over to this event. They stopped at a rest area and he never came out. I can't imagine the shock. If we remember correctly, he was around Debbie's age.
Please pray for Esther and their four children. The children are very young. Pray for his family as well as her's.
Not much else to tell about Debbie. She's still improving. Keep on praying for her as well.

Went and had pizza last evening with Deb. She took one bite and said it was too salty. Her tastes have changed since the surgery. Anyone who knows a Stalker knows they love salt! They salt everything! So her tastes have definitely changed! John ended up paying four dollars for a ham and cheese sandwich out of a vending machine for her. She took the cheese off....
Her headache was gone. She (and her visiting mother) slept the good part of the afternoon while I was slaving away here at home. *sigh* What a life! No! I think I'd rather be out and about rather than stuck in St. Camillus. No offense, Kathy!
After we ate, Maxine and I went to the Bon Ton. Maxine's favorite haunt. We picked up some Christmas presents for aunt Marjorie. On the way home, Maxine made the statement I've never heard before. "Where's my cell phone?!?!" So, I had to turn around (running a red light in the process.. barely - it was pink) and head back to the mall. I dialed her number and walked around the store listening for it. I found it. She had left it on a shelf while looking for an item. Does any of this surprise you? Doesn't me!
Kody has his first school picture taken today. So Maxine got him up early to get him looking all spiffy. When I took him there, his teacher said "Wow! You're early for you all!" I was offended! Ha!
Well, I better run. Maxine is waiting on me. She's wanting to go back to that store of her's before we pick Kody up from school.
Pray for Deb today. They are really working her hard. She hardly get's a rest between therapy sessions. Actually, sometimes she doesn't get rest! But, she is improving! And boy is she looking forward to the weekend!

Well.... Now that everyone knows how old I am (thanks to those North Carolina women) I believe that you all will have to be more sympathetic towards me! That means no more rooting for Nellie over me! Ha! And, Cousin Gloria, your e-mail came on the right day! You weren't late. It's today!
Debbie had a very busy day today. They have her going through hoops there! Literally! They suspend hoops over the floor and have her walk through them. They had her walking sideways, walking the line like a drunk person (she did better than a drunk!) They had her doing math again, which she did better on today!
She does have a headache today. She said it's the first one she's had since she can't remember. So I told the nurse. Debbie didn't want to "bother them".
Tonight, John is bringing pizza to St. Camillus for my birthday so Debbie can celebrate with us. Then we are going to go out Saturday as well for my Birthday. Wow! I'm really popular up here, I guess! NOT!
Kody is "helping" me here on the computer. He said to tell you all that "I love you! So much! From Kody!" He said that he "loves his dad and mommy too! From Kody!" So there you have it!
Well, I'm in the middle of doing laundry (yee haw), and I think I heard the buzzer. Better run.
Keep on praying for Debbie. Her spirits seem much better today. God is working.
Todd

This is the second post for today, so if you are just checking for the first time, you may want to read journal history!
John, Kody, Maxine and I rode together tonight to see Deb. We spent a little over an hour there. She is really remembering things. We had told her earlier today that tomorrow is my birthday, and she remembered and told John tonight! She doesn't seem to have any peripheral vision. She doesn't notice you when you walk up beside her.
We found out that she gets two four hour passes this weekend! Four hours on Saturday and four on Sunday! So we are going out Saturday for my birthday, then she will come here on Sunday for dinner! She is really looking forward to that!
I finally posted the new address for Debbie at St. Camillus. I had brought it home with me earlier today so I could put it on, but had to hurry to get John's dad home before he was soaked! Then someone called from South Carolina to give me the address while I was gone! So thanks, Glenda! You had it right!
Well, we are going to just sit and relax for a few minutes before going to bed. Keep praying for Debbie physically and emotionally.
Todd

Just returned from seeing Debbie... Been a while since I've been able to say that!
She was peeking around the door watching for us when we arrived. In a wheelchair. Make that a hot rod! That woman flies in that thing! Better watch out. Woman driver, no surviver!
She went to occupational therapy not long after we got there. They had her fold clothes and such. She did really good at that. Then they had her do math and paperwork. She struggled with that. She said she just couldn't think straight.
She is able to open her left eye a little bit! She couldn't do that when we left! So that is a definite plus. She talks so plain also. She doesn't seem to have to search for the words she wants. Her swelling is down. She is just improving all around.
Her spirits are still a little low. She doesn't try to let on, but it shows. She said she is doing some better in that regard compared to a few days ago.
Well, John's dad is here needing a ride back home. He usually walks for excercise down to here three times a week. It's starting to rain, so I better get him home!
We'll be going back up this evening, so maybe I'll have more to post later on.
Todd

Sunday, October 24, 2004 11:37 PM CDT

We made it here safe and sound. We arrived around nine-thirty God's time! We only stopped ONCE!!! With Maxine in the car, that is a miracle!
John had Deb try to open her eye today. After working at it a little bit, she did get it to open a little on it's own. So the nerve is definitely alive!
I keep finding out about people that are reading this. I found out that the staff at a dental clinic in North Carolina keep checking in. And they don't even know Debbie. But I think that is so awesome! It's nice to know that people care! So, Hi to them and keep D.E. in line!
I've gotta say, Nellie was so happy to see me! She jumped up and down and I think she may have even danced a little! Gonna have to pray for that dog! I think Kody must have grown an inch since we've been gone from here! He is such a great kid. Blue's Clues anyone??
Keep praying for Debbie's emotional state. We hate to see her have to go through this. I must admit that I've not seen Debbie struggle like this before, but who wouldn't?!!? Really lift her up in prayer whenever you think of it. Remember John and Kody as well. It cuts John like a knife to hear Debbie ask why he would love her. And also remember her mother, Maxine. God is going to have to supply her with strength and patience these next few months.
I'm tired, I'm going to get some shut eye!
Todd

Saturday, October 23, 2004 5:06 PM CDT

Debbie has really rediscovered something that women love! The PHONE!!!!! She called my mom today. She called her mom, aunt Marjorie and me as well. She talked and talked and talked! She sounded AWESOME!!! I mean, she was herself! Didn't even sound tired! She did get one phrase a little twisted when she was talking to her mother. But, hey, I do that!
She is really remembering things. She asked if we were still planning on coming tomorrow. She asked if I was getting ready to move. And there were other things. So this shows that her short term memory is really improving!
I believe her eye situation is really bothering her. The first words out of her mouth to me (other than hello) were "My eye's not any better than yesterday." The swelling has really gone down, but I know she really wants that eye to open it. Continue to pray in that regard.
John, Deb and Kody took a walk outdoors today. She really enjoyed it, but it wore her out! The healing process for the brain takes alot of energy. So she loses her get up and go quite easily.
Maxine and I are getting ready to head out tomorrow afternoon. We are going to go to our home church, come home to mom and dad's and eat chicken noodles and taters and corn and rolls and california blend and ...... man! There goes my diet! Then we will leave right after the meal.
Since we are leaving and won't be back for a while, Maxine and I have been getting things taken care of before we leave. Last night, she had me down at her house wrapping Christmas presents! Can you believe it!?!?! Truth be told, I believe if she thought she could get away with it, she would have had me wrap my own! Then this morning, she came to my house with Marjorie and helped pack up my dishes and such since I'll be moving when I come back from New York.
But enough about that. I probably won't have time to post tomorrow. Please pray for us as we travel. We are taking David and Maxine's car and the seats in it kill my back. So pray that my back will hold out! Pray that God will keep us safe.
Continue to pray for Debbie. God is really helping! Pray for John and Kody as well.
Todd

I received this e-mail from John and Deb's pastors. Thought it might give some information to you all. It really tells what is going on!

We went to see Deb at 3:00 and spent 1 hr. and 45 min. with her. Joanna and Chase were there. They took her to therapy while we were there and Deb did just fine. The therapist seemed to think she's doing great, accept she's a bit fuzzy once in a while. We were so surprised that the swelling has gone down so much just since we've last seen her. Deb had her glasses on and her left eye is blinking with the right eye. The left one is still closed, but she opened it several times while we were there with her hand. Her memory is good. She remembered all of us telling her that Nellie came into the church before we left and other things. So we are very encouraged.

*Note From Todd*
Did I tell you Nellie loves to go to church?????
Ok. Back to the letter!

In therapy they showed Joanna how to have Deb get in and out of a car. (they have a car down there in the therapy section). Deb did fine with no problem. They have to do all that or someone could come back on them and sue them. Joanna is to show John, and when you all come back they will show you. We have a feeling she won't be at St. Camillus very long. Deb said the food there was really good. After we left her, we went to Walmart and got her a radio/cassette player so she can listen to the radio. The only thing is, next week she really has a full therapy schedule. They're going to have her busy. The therapist didn't even hold on to her when she walked her. And they had her walking up steps etc. too.

Oh, she said when I wrote you to tell you: "I'll be glad when the ole Toad is back". She said you'd know what she meant. :o) And she said something about the "frisky frog". She made sense when she said it, but I can't remember how she said it.......so the fault is ALL mine, not hers. (and I haven't had a brain tumor. What's my excuse?????) Anyway, we could tell she's back to her old self. She said she was down a little bit yesterday, but after John came, she said "I was fine". Her spirits were very good today. She has a beautiful view out her room window (she's next to the window). The lawn view is real pretty. She's on the 2nd floor, where the brain patients are, so don't think she's stuck with a bunch of old people!!!!! She goes to the dining hall etc. She said she's played the piano there once. I can't think of anything else right now. Sorry!!!

Thanks Sis. Wallick for the information. I can't wait to get there to see her!
Keep praying!
Todd

Maxine talked to Deb and John again this morning. I'm getting a little jealous! Two days in a row for her, none for me. Hmmm. I guess I see where I'm at in the pecking order!
Maxine said that Deb just really seems to be down. We think that now that she is alert, she realizes how far she has to go. We've tried to tell her that she has come so far from where she was, but she continues to struggle.
They have scheduled an eye appointment for the eleventh of November. That seems like an eternity, but we'll put our patience to work!
Not much else to share about her at this moment. Since I haven't been able to talk to John, information is limited. I'll try to find more out this evening.
I guess it looks like Maxine has "changed up" (Kody speak) her mind once again! Now we are leaving Sunday after church. She is anxious to get back to be with Debbie. 'Course, that could change twenty times between now and then!
Continue to pray for Deb. I know you have been, and we appreciate it!. I can't imagine what it must be like for her. I know how much I ache for her, so I know it must be really difficult for her. So if you would, give special consideration in your prayers for her in the days ahead.
Thanks so much. We appreciate you all!
Todd

Maxine talked to John this morning. John had not let on to Maxine till this morning that Debbie had been pretty low last evening. Her evaluation didn't go as well as they had hoped. She struggles with figuring out what letter she is looking at. She has to study it a bit before it registers in her mind. 'Course, John forgot to take her glasses, so that didn't help matters any!
They are going to have an optometrist come in to do an eye exam on her left eye. So far there has been no change there. They haven't scheduled that as of yet.
Deb's spirits are better today. She told her mom she doesn't like St. Camillus. But, she did say the food was better there! That has to be a plus!
As time goes on and she progresses, they will give her a four hour pass to go home, then eight hours, then twelve hours. So I'm sure she is looking forward to that!
I'm getting anxious to get back and see Deb. If it were up to me, I think I'd leave tomorrow. But, Maxine's the boss! And she says we leave Tuesday! So, we are going to leave Tuesday. Did I mention that the reason we are leaving Tuesday is because Maxine said so???
Continue to pray for Debbie's spirits. I know that it has to be tough being away from home for so long. Added on to that is her desire to be whole again. It frustrates her that she isn't herself.
Keep John and Kody and the rest of the family in your prayers as well. It's going to be a long road ahead.
Todd

Wednesday, October 20, 2004 1:13 PM CDT

Talked to John last evening. And Deb!!! He was there with her and let me talk to her on the phone. Boy, she sounds GREAT!! She sounded weak, but she didn't sound like she was in outer space!
I asked her how she liked her new "home". She didn't sound real thrilled to be there! I think she is just ready to go to her own home. Don't think I could blame her for that!
John said they were to give her the evaluation today. They say that people can stay there from two weeks to two months. It looks like Deb will be there for two to four weeks. John expects no longer than three weeks.
Yesterday was a pretty exhausting day for them. It seemed like they spent the whole day waiting on different nurses and therapists to stop by and discuss treatments and what can be expected. She didn't have therapy yesterday due to all of that.
I asked John how the animals were doing. He said he hasn't forgotten one time to feed the fish. Just twice! NO! I'm "just kiddin'"! Nellie did escape the back yard a couple of days ago. John said he thought he'd never see her again. He searched everywhere. But she finally returned on her own. So now he has to fix the hole in the fence before he can let her out again! Funny! When I was there, she stayed in the fence for me!..........
It looks like Maxine and I will be returning next Tuesday. Since she is going to be there for a while, she wants to spend as much time as possible here at home.
Some have expressed concern about me contacting John while we are away. They felt that he and Debbie needed some space. I guess they get the impression that Maxine and I are a burden on John! Ha! Anyway, just to put to rest those fears, John has asked me to keep in contact with him so I can keep people updated on this website. He doesn't want the prayer to stop!
So keep on praying for Debbie. John said there has not been real improvement in the past few days, so remember her in prayer!
Todd

Tuesday, October 19, 2004 3:51 PM CDT

Well.... Talk about trying to get something out of someone. Worse yet, trying to get in contact with them! John Fike is going to have to answer to me once I get back! Ha!
I guess David finally talked to him today. They have Debbie moved. She is finally out of that wonderful place called a hospital! They haven't done the analysis as of yet, so we don't know how long she will have to be at St. Camillus.
Unfortunately, that is all the info I have. I promise you I will get with him tonight and find out more for you. I'll have to find out how Nellie is doing as well as Cleopatra, Clarence and Dan. You know, I still haven't found out if that's really his name or not!
Maxine and I spent the day together today. As if we haven't done enough of that already in the past couple of months. We went and ate with "the relatives". They meet every Tuesday. Missed you Uncle Bob and Aunt DeLee! Then we voted.
Then (and this is why I'm sharing this all with you) Maxine replaced her cell phone... I'm not kidding, ten minutes later, she was looking for that thing!!! "Oh no! Did I leave it at Verizon????" I'm telling you, I'm going to staple that thing to her clothes! God help that woman's memory.
Speaking of her memory... She has taken Ginkgo for her memory. God as my witness, she FORGETS to take it! Oh my.
I know this is supposed to be about Debbie, but since my information is so limited, I thought I'd go ahead and share what happened in our life today. I promise I will be giving out more info! Hopefully before I return to New York, but definitely after I get there!
Keep on praying for Debbie. Pray that her recovery will continue, which I'm sure with God's help, it will!
Todd

Monday, October 18, 2004 5:12 PM CDT

This one will be short today. I haven't heard from John, and neither has Maxine. Least ways, she can't remember that she has!
So, I guess that would mean I wouldn't really have anything to share as of now. I'm sure with her moving tomorrow, I'll have alot to share then.
Maxine and I are really enjoying our time here at home. Yet Debbie is constantly on our minds, so in that respect, we are anxious to return.
Please remember Debbie tomorrow as she is moved to St. Camillus. Pray that everything goes smoothly. Pray that the transistion into a more rigorous "work-out" goes well! I can imagine that we are going to have one tired woman on our hands starting this week!
Continue to remember the rest of the family as well. With this respite, our nerves have settled down a bit. And we are thankful.
I'll hope to have a bunch of news tomorrow!
Todd

Sunday, October 17, 2004 6:36 PM CDT

John and I keep missing each other when we call, so this information came from Maxine. I'm sure she's a reliable source even though she does tend to lose things. I don't think her mind is gone as of yet!
Debbie is still improving. She called Maxine this afternoon and talked to her for a little while. She's able to get out of the therapy ward quite a bit now. So when she does, John makes sure that she can call someone on his cell phone.
St. Camillus has a bed opening up for Debbie!!!! She'll be moving there next Tuesday. John is going to take a half a day's vacation to be there with her during her analysis. That will tell how long she will have to be in St. Cam.
Not much else to tell at this moment. John is pretty quiet when it comes to certain things, so feel blessed I'm getting this much out of him! I'll try to drag more out of him when I get in contact with him.
Haven't received word on whether the fish were fed today.. Poor Cwarence and Poopatra and Dan. That's Kody talk there. Just like he says "'pewter" instead of computer. So they may be living on water alone. Just as men can't live on bread alone, I wonder if they can do it on water...
Oh my. I'm losing it..
I know it seems like every time I finish this, I have to leave a bunch of requests. So this time I'll just ask that you continue to pray in the way you have. You know our concerns, you know our desires for Debbie. So, thanks for praying.
Todd

Saturday, October 16, 2004 10:19 AM CDT

We've heard from John. Actually, Maxine talked to him last night. Pray for her mind. She thought New York was an hour behind! She called him at 11:30 our time, which is actually 12:30 New York time last night! I'm sure he was thrilled to hear from her at that time! Then he called me just a few minutes ago.
Debbie is continuing to improve. She's starting to use bigger words. Twice yesterday, she used the word "unbelievable" to describe her meals.. Not sure what that says about her mind, though! I've seen those meals! Nah. As Kody would say, "Just kiddin'"! I've also noticed that she doesn't struggle as much to find the word that she is looking for.
John took her some food from "Cajun Cafe" last evening. He said she really enjoyed that. It's one of her favorite restaurants. I used to love it. But it's Chinese. The more I ate it, the more I thought that the texture just wasn't the texture of chicken. You know, Chinese are known for loving dog meat..... Yeah. I know. I'm a mess!!!
Still no word on when she will actually get to move out of the wonderful hotel she is in and move to St. Camillus. They said they would give us notice so we could pack things for her and have everything ready once they pick her up.
A new prayer request. Pray for John's memory. Clarence, Cleopatra, and Daniel (I think that's his name) are relying on John to feed them. And John can't seem to remember them. You see, they are stuck in a little corner of the room, so he doesn't notice. Oh. Did I mention that they are Kody's fish??
Although we don't miss the hospital, we do miss seeing Deb. And although she didn't let on, I think she misses her mom. After we left Thursday evening, John was with her a while. When he left, he told her he missed her. She started to cry. He believed that even though she didn't want her mom to go, she knew that Maxine needed some time away.
Pray for Debbie's emotional state. On the outside, she has seemed so strong. But yet I know that on the inside, there is some struggle with what she is going through. Every now and then, she can't help but let it show. My heart broke for her Thursday when we took her outdoors. People just stared at her. And I know it bothered her. It bothered me!
Pray for John as well. He's going through alot. He really needs to feel God's strong arms around him at this time. This is an urgent request. Satan is really trying to get him down. And it's no wonder. He doesn't normally read these, so I feel I can ask this of you.
Again, keep on praying. God's definitely still working.
Todd

Friday, October 15, 2004 6:30 PM CDT

We have arrived! Around 4:30 Indiana time. Had a safe trip. Saw a couple accidents, one truck on fire, one meeting up with the back of a semi, but we weren't invited! Thank goodness!
I haven't heard from John. I'll talk to him tonight and I'll update first thing tomorrow.
Appreciate your prayers. Keep up the good work!
Todd

Friday, October 15, 2004 6:35 AM CDT

Just thought I'd write a quick note to let you know that we are on our way home. We started around seven, God's time (Indiana time - God never changes, just as His time doesn't either!)
John has promised to keep me updated daily, so keep checking. I'll keep on informing!
Todd

Thursday, October 14, 2004 5:45 PM CDT

Today was a warm, clear (for the most part) day. So we took Debbie outside for the first time in five weeks! First words out of her mouth once outdoors: "This is like Heaven!" She really enjoyed being out of the confines of the hospital. I called some family members on my cell (pray for the bill) and Debbie talked to all. It did her alot of good!
They took her picc line out yesterday. Today, after taking her back to her room, they took her stitches out. So things are really starting to progress. She is really starting to communicate again. It won't be long before she's talking like a regular woman! Ok. Ok. I don't want to hear it!
She gave her mom a birthday card today. She wrote a paragraph in it, and although it didn't make total sense, her momma cried. She said that will be one birthday card she will never lose!
Debbie's coming back! She is making leaps and bounds each day. It really is nothing short of a miracle. Thanks so much for your prayers. Don't stop now!
I won't be on here till later tomorrow evening due to traveling, but I'll try to keep this up to date while I am at home these next six or seven days. Just pray that John keeps me informed!
Todd

Thursday, October 14, 2004 11:09 AM CDT

Have you ever tried to sleep in a house with a skunk underneath it, letting you know that it's presence is so real?? That was me last night! So I watched the clock roll around to Six this morning. Finally, sleep came! For a couple hours, anyhow! You know, God forbid that the day should come that Nellie comes in wearing new perfume! Ah! There's a prayer request for ya! Keep Nellie away from Stripey!
We are getting ready to go up to the hospital. Debbie was really communicating well yesterday. Still not totally Debbie, but she's starting to sound more like herself!
We've told Debbie about some things that she will be facing. She knows that they will have to have another surgery to take care of the bone flap. She knows that she had a light stroke. She's dealt really well with all of the information.
By the way! I found out how to spell her Doctors' names! Saddiqui!!! There's a name for you!
Maxine and I are going home tomorrow to take care of some business. I have a couple of health-related appointments, one with my doc to get new meds. We are also going to get our absentee ballots filled out since we won't be home in Indiana to vote come November 2nd.
Keep us in your prayers tomorrow as we are traveling. We are a little weary physically and mentally. And as always, keep Debbie, John and Kody in your prayers as well. Especially Deb!
Todd

Wednesday, October 13, 2004 5:33 PM CDT

Spent the majority of the day at the hospital with Debbie. She has been officially released by the medical doctors as well as the physical therapists to go to St. Camillus. But she is still at the hospital waiting for a bed to open up for her.
St. Camillus is highly respected in these parts of our grand and glorious country for their capabilities in physical therapy. Pshew! Long and wordy! They will be rigorous with Debbie's rehabilitation, so we are anxious for her to get settled in there and get even further up the road to full recovery.
Today is Maxine's birthday. Joanna brought up a birthday cake "from Debbie" to have a little party. We arranged for Debbie to eat her meal in the big room with us. The nurses made her promise to eat her meal before she had any cake! And she did. Then while eating her piece of cake, the therapist came for her afternoon session. You should have seen the mischievous look in Deb's eye when she tried to smuggle the piece of cake along with her! She kept winking at us the whole time the nurse was getting her ready! That is the Debbie we know!
Debbie's short term memory is really improving! She is remembering what happens from day to day. Well, more than she had been! But some things still fly right on past! She is NOT to get out of bed by herself or into bed from her wheelchair. Well, she seems to forget that. After leaving the room for awhile, Maxine and I came back to find Debbie in bed, one shoe off, one shoe on. Her nurse came and in the course of conversation, we came to the conclusion she had "arose" from the wheelchair on her own and climbed into bed. The nurse asked her if she did it by herself, and Debbie kept pointing up. We finally figured out she was pointing to God when she said, "It's under the Blood!" Maxine and I couldn't help it. We burst out laughing! The nurse didn't have a clue! I guess Debbie doesn't always get things right, but then again, maybe she knows better than we do!
I want to say a quick thank you to a couple of people. Debbie has received several cards, and one came today from a couple in Berne IN that really ministered to her and us. The words were just what she needed! They know who they are, and we thank them. Then we also want to thank John and Sharon across the street. They've fixed meal after meal and done other things as well. Thanks a million!
Keep praying. Debbie is really improving, but still has a long way to go. We really appreciate all of you and your prayers!

We went to the hospital earlier this morning for the first of the two meetings today. This meeting was to tell us why Debbie is where she is at in the healing process.
In truth, even though it is not termed this way by physicians or healthcare, Debbie is still in a state of coma. Because of the swelling, the brain stem had been pushed down causing her "get up and go" to "get up and go!" And that will take some time to recover. In fact, the healing process could take up to a year.
Debbie may never regain some of her cognative skills. She has something called Aphasia. This impairs the ability to comprehend what people are saying to her, and it makes her lose the word she's trying to think of. This is usually a result of brain damage, and there has been some due to the surgery and tumor.
She may lose the ability to do two things at once. She may lose short term memory permanently. She may lose her ability to focus. We just don't know yet. Only time will reveal what is to be. If she does lose any of those, she will have to learn how to do the affected things another way.
Some of you have expressed concern as to the pictures I posted. I want to assure all of you that I not only had permission from John and the family, but in fact, John picked the pictures to post. We just felt that you all needed to see what she looked like so you could understand why we want you to pray for those things we've requested.
People, my heart is pretty heavy today. Satan is fighting us right and left. I'm not going to go into detail, but just pray for all of us a little extra during this time. With the break-in that occured and that playing on our minds as to who did it, add on all the other pressures of the day to day hospital visits and such, it's quite a heavy burden. Our minds and spirits are a little weak right now. So please add us to your prayer lists along with Debbie. Don't take the focus off of Debbie as far as we are concerned, but just remember us as well.
Thanks
Todd

Aren't Mondays wonderful? This morning, Maxine wakes Kody and I in order to get him to school. 'Course we are running behind. Seems to be that way in this house! So she slams a slice of bread with butter in his hand and a glass of juice and we run out the door. I rush to get him there, only to find the parking lot and school empty! It then dawns on me that it is Columbus day! When I was in school, we didn't get the day off. Oh well... Nice start to the week!
We then drove to the hospital. Debbie was sleeping. After a bit, she woke, but really seemed out of it. John said that this morning at breakfast, she pointed to a man with a big machine attached to him and asked "How did they get that truck in here?" He took her down to play the piano and she thought she saw a frog on the keys. We just need to remember that she's still healing and that she will have these days.
The other surgeon was in this morning. His name is Saduski, Sazuki, I don't know, something or other! These doctor's names sometimes are as bad as their handwriting! He seems to think that it will take up to two months for Debbie's eye to open. So we are getting differing reports from different doctors. So I guess only time will tell what will happen.
It seems that we do have a backslider in the house. I came back to wash Debbie's curtains and in the process of doing so, thought I would check on Kody. I found him out on the front porch with Nellie. Not that Nellie had any choice in being there. He had her so tied up with rope, the dog couldn't move! She had the most pitiful look on her face! So it looks like we need to start praying for Kody again! Or Nellie....
I will be posting the new pictures on here later this evening. I'm having them put down to disk and the man is busy today. I should have them tonight.
Keep on praying.

Just returned from the hospital. Debbie is doing much better than this morning. She was sitting up in a regular chair in the community room when we arrived.
Not long after we got there, Dr. Holsapple came in to see her. He had her lift her left eyelid and close her right to find out if she could really see out of the left eye. She could see movement, she just couldn't tell how many fingers he held up. But that will probably improve once the eye is open.
He believes that the reason her eye hasn't opened is because of the bone flap not being in place. Her eyebrow bone is not attached to anything, so it droops. Once they replace the bone flap in three months, he believes that the eye will open! So that was some good news.
He was really happy with her progress. He seemed to feel that she is on track! So we were really happy after he had been there.
Kathy Schafer, a lady who used to attend Debbie's church before moving to Florida, surprised Debbie today by stopping in and seeing her along with Bonnie Cramer, another lady from Debbie's church. So we had Debbie play the piano for them. She played "In the Garden" and it was perfect! She had every chord right, and never stumbled! She also played a couple of other songs. There was a world of difference in today's playing compared to a couple days ago!
I can tell that Debbie is really itching to be complete again. She is really fighting to get back. I'm glad to see that in her.
I plan on posting some new pictures tomorrow. If everything goes as planned.
Keep on praying. God's not finished with her yet!

Just a short note. Maxine and I are getting ready to go to the hospital... again.... Over a month now. I don't care if I ever see the inside of a hospital again! But I'll continue to dream!
John and Kody are there now. John went up earlier today. She was more confused than she had been the past few days. The nurse had brought a bowl of water in for Debbie to wash up with this morning. It had obviously not been touched, but when questioned by the nurse, she said she had washed "all up". There were other things as well, just not coming to my mind. But you get the idea. So pray in this regard.
Will hopefully have more to tell when I get back.

Spent some time on and off with Debbie today. She was so much more alert. It seems to be increasing day by day now. Maxine and I took her in some apple salad that Sister Dickerson had made (man, that stuff is awesome). As I was handing it to her she said, "Oh, this must be from Sister Dickerson!" I guess the pastor has made a name for herself! Deb really enjoyed it.
She told her pastors today that the reason she is so blue is because she has compared her recovery this time to the last. She realizes that it is taking much longer this time around. Added on to that is the fact that her eye isn't opening. She's also concerned about that. The pastors had prayer with her before they left and she seemed encouraged!
Debbie will probably be released from the hospital next week, maybe around Wednesday. She'll then be taken to St. Camilles (I think that's how it is spelled) for extensive therapy. It looks like she will be there for around two weeks. Then she will come home. She will need round the clock care for a time, so it looks like Maxine and I may be making Syracuse home for a little while longer. We have two family meetings next Tuesday where we will learn how to care for her needs.
In the prayer request department, people, you need to pray for my stomach! With all of the food people have been sharing with us, plus eating on the run at not-so-healthy restaurants.... it seems to be getting bigger. Maxine says to add her name to that prayer as well! 'Course she thinks EVERYONE is getting fatter, Nellie and the fish included!
We really do want to praise God for all he has done for Debbie. It really has been amazing to see the growth in the past few days. And it's all in answer to YOUR prayers! Keep on keeping on.
Todd

Getting ready to go up to the hospital. I found Debbie's "to-do" list last evening. THREE PAGES LONG!!! So John and I spent this morning doing the outdoors part of the list. Putting the pool away, outdoor toys, flower pots, that sort of thing. We also went on a four mile bike ride! They have a cart that hooks onto John's bike and Kody and Nellie the wonder dog rode in it! That was great excercise! Especially as much as I've been eating. *sob* *sigh*
John was up to see Debbie this morning. She is in much better spirits. We are hoping that maybe for the time being she has forgotten about her swelling and her eye. Or maybe God's helping her deal with it!
Continue to pray for all of us! God is definitely helping! We are all in better spirits. Keep on praying for Debbie. We know you are!

Today has really been a tough day for Debbie emotionally. Now that she is more coherent, she is beginning to realize the extent of what is going on. And she now notices how she appears. And, as all of us would, she's struggling quite miserably with it.
So John spent the morning with her. He told her that even if her face remained this way her entire life, he'd still love her. He tried to convey to her that her face wouldn't stay that way. But when you feel so low sometimes, it's hard to see the positive.
This afternoon she was physically and emotionally bankrupt. Most of the time she kept her head on the pillow. The Palmer's, a couple from Deb's church, brought us pizza tonight. So I took it up to the hospital and met John, Kody and Maxine there. We brought Debbie in and she ate with us. I had told her we were going to do so, so she had looked forward to that.
We haven't shared with Debbie the fact that she had a stroke. Nor have we told her that she will have to have another surgery in January. Nor have we told her about the break-in. So, there are more bumps in the road ahead for her. But we are going to wait to tell her all of these things until we absolutely have to. And one at a time!
A side note. While looking for some prescription medication of Debbie's today, we found it was stolen as well in the break-in. So it wasn't just my medication that was taken. But it almost seems that whoever may have broken in knew just what they were looking for and where to find it. The only two places that were disturbed were my bag and the cabinet door where her meds were! We are baffled.
All said, with what Deb has went through today, it really is a good sign. She is gaining. It's tough, but she's gaining.
Let's pray for her emotional state. This is not going to be an easy thing to deal with. I've gotta be honest. The helmet is not sleek. It's not a beautiful thing she's going to have to wear for three months. It's going to be hard on her.
Let's still remember her physically as well. Maxine told her she's come a long way, and she has! But it's by God's grace that she will continue on. And your prayers!
Thanks.
Todd

Hi. Just a quick note. Debbie is feeling quite low today. She is crying alot. John hasn't gone to work as of yet, staying with her until Kody is out of school and we can get up there.
I'm not sure how to ask for prayer. The nurses say this is actually a good sign. And we remember that right before she came out of the funk last time, she cried and cried. So I guess if you could just pray that God will give her an extra comfort through today, we'd appreciate it!

Have you ever had one of those days where you just wish you would have stayed in bed? Or since you didn't, you wish you could go back! Well, TODAY has been one of those days!
Maxine, Kody and I went to Eckards to have the pictures made off of the disk we had made yesterday. I know, going twice around the barn to get to the house. When she went to get back in the truck, she noticed that her cell phone was no longer with her. So we went back in the store to look. It wasn't there, but we left information with the cashier in case they found it.
We came back here and searched and searched and... You get the picture. TWO HOURS! We couldn't find it. So I took her to the mall to go to Verizon to turn it off in case it was found by an interested party.... Interested in free phone, free minutes. But since it is registered under David, they wouldn't allow us to do it. So we had to call and leave a voice-mail for David to call them and turn it off.
I then took Maxine and Kody up to the hospital and dropped them off. I went back to Eckards to search there and ask if it had been turned in. Nope! Did I mention this is the fourth time she has lost it since we've been here?!?!? She said to say she "misplaced it", not lost it, but you all know the truth! But it looks this time that it has been dropped somewhere and is really gone for good.
So after that episode, I was finally able to go to see Debbie myself. And, WOW, has there been an improvement in her since just yesterday! When she spoke, it seemed she really knew what she was saying. She made much more sense. Her voice was stronger and she seems to have more get-up-and-go. She just seemed to be much more herself!
We noticed that her left eye seemed to be twitching a great deal more today than it has in the past. So we are hoping and praying that it is getting close to opening. There is still considerable swelling around the eye.
We stayed for her meal. She really has improved there as well. She wasn't trying to put food where it wasn't to be. She ate her sandwich like you're supposed to as well as her soup. She also ate those nasty peas they gave her! Peas! Yuck..
She really is improving! She even stuck her tongue out at me today. And I don't think I deserved it either! I'm sure you all can believe that! Not sure what happened to those manners her nurse was talking about yesterday!
Seriously, though, Debbie has made great strides in the last couple of days. Keep praying that this will continue. Continue praying for her eye, that it would open and that she will have at least some eyesight in it. Of course, we want God's will, but we are human and would love to have her back the way she was - sans tumor!
Thanks
Todd

Wow! Another busy day in the Fike/Stalker/Myers/Nellie household... Yeah, got to give her credit. Went and had a service job on my truck. Going back and forth between Indiana and New York will really put the miles on a vehicle!
Back up a minute. Sister Fike took Kody off our.. took care of him today! So she came and picked him up in time for school. Then, at the last minute, he "remembered" that he was supposed to take a lunch today. So grandma had to hurry and fix it for him. But if I had been up, I would have been able to tell them that it is actually Friday that he is to take a lunch. So, he was late again...
Anyway, after the service job, we went and picked up another Latte for Debbie. Boy, those things are expensive! She has rich tastes!! We walked in to see her and she just seemed so much brighter today than even yesterday! Her nurse told us today that they were going to keep Debbie because she is so polite! Always thanking them for everything they do for her. We declined the offer to keep her.. She remembered that board meeting was today at her church. Her pastors came shortly after we arrived and she carried on an intelligent conversation with us.
Then the physical therapist came to get her for some physical therapy. They got her out of bed and just walked her around the halls for probably fifteen minutes! No walker. The therapist just held on to her arm! And she even stood and talked to her pastors, Maxine and I out in the hall for a bit.
They put her back in bed for some R&R (yeah right! in a hospital?). So I left for a little while. When I came back, they got her up for supper/dinner. She did much better with her eating. She wasn't trying to stick things where they weren't to be put. And she did a better job getting that "food" down than I would have done. And speaking of food, the latte didn't last long today either.
John came about then, so Maxine and I left the two love birds alone. We are going to get ready for services.
Debbie has made some great steps in the last week. But she has a long way to go. The eye is still not opened. The swelling is still not down. She still gets words mixed up. She still gets confused. She's still not herself totally. She just has a way to go. So keep up the prayers.
Todd

Debbie seems even more alert today. She was sitting at a table when we arrived. I took her an Iced Latte from Dunkin' Donuts. A large one. I'm not kidding, that thing lasted less than fifteen minutes!
She seems to be remembering for longer periods of time. She remembered that John had been up to see her this morning. In fact, she brought that up. Usually we ask her if anyone has been in to see her, and she always says no, forgetting that someone really has. So that's a definite improvement.
Not much else to report. Kody and I left to go get a picture of Nellie copied off onto a cd so we could post it on the website. So for those of you asking what Nellie looks like (can't believe you people!), you can now find the celebrity's picture on the bottom of the photo album page.
Getting ready to head back up there. Tonight, Debbie's church starts revival with Noel Scott, so I think we are going to try to get into that service tonight!
Keep on praying.

Monday, October 4, 2004 3:28 PM CDT

Been up a couple of times today for a couple hours at a time. The first, Debbie slept for the most part. She said hi to Kody, but that was about it. Kody does such a great job while in the room with his mommy. In fact, he shushed his grandmother and me! Guess we were being a little too noisy.
The second time, she was asleep at first, but in a little while, woke. She seemed more "with it" today. She asked me how my stomache was. She remembered that from yesterday. It's been touchy since going off the medication they had me on.
They started something new today. Instead of wheeling her everywhere, they are having her walk with a walker. Another nurse follows behind with her wheelchair in case Debbie should need it. So when Kody and I were getting ready to leave, they got her up and she walked down the hallway with us on her way to speech therapy. They gave her fifteen minutes to walk down there, but she walked so fast they had to set her in the day room and wait for ten minutes!
Kody and I sat with her for those minutes and then came home. I decided that maybe the dog (won't mention her name) needed a bath. So, Kody and I "dove" in! I washed and he "rinsed" the dog. I think he got us more wet than Nellie, but he finally got the job done. Then I toweled her off. He held the mirror up to her for inspection! What a kid!
A friend of mine wrote me today. I think she put into words what I was trying to say yesterday. Sometimes after the storm (the surgery), the rough seas caused by the storm (the day to day waiting) can be just as tough if not tougher to go through. I know I didn't do justice to what she said, but I think it says it a little clearer than what I was saying! I guess that is the way I've felt the past few days.
We are trying to stay encouraged. We appreciate your prayers. More and more, I don't know that we could make it without them! I know Debbie has felt them as well. She told her pastors yesterday that she was NOT discouraged! I know it's the prayers that are sustaining her. Thanks!
Todd

Just returned from the hospital. I've come to notice something over the past few weeks. It's really exhausting mentally! To sit and watch a loved one go through such an ordeal, it's tough.
Debbie is still pretty much the same. She's in there, she shows out sometimes. But she's still not the Debbie that went in. But it will take more time since she has had the two surgeries this time. We took her in some beef and noodles since she didn't care for what they fed her today. For you medical people, we have permission! Boy, did she love that!
Maxine told the nurse about Debbie playing the piano, so they want us to mention to the physical therapist tomorrow that she plays. Then they will incorporate that into her PT. So maybe she'll enjoy that part of recuperating better!
Please remember John in your prayers. Somedays, he says, it just seems so dark. So please pray for him.
I know this seems garbled today. I'm having some difficulty concentrating due to a certain child sitting here looking at veggie tales! I won't name any names! Isn't that right, Nellie!
Please continue to pray for Debbie. We long for the day that she comes around. Thanks so much for all that you have done in the way of prayer and otherwise. It means everything!
Todd

Sunday, October 3, 2004 11:57 AM CDT

We are getting ready to go up to the hospital, so there's no news to tell. In all the crazy things going on this past week, I felt that I should take the time to give some good news.
The evening that the house was broken into, an answer to prayer did occur! After all that had transpired, John decided to check his blood pressure. He's been having some difficulty with it. He has the type that is just a small cuff that goes around your wrist. Then you just push a button, and it inflates and takes your blood pressure. Well, his was fine! But, that's not the answer to prayer I'm wanting to tell.
Kody, in his infinite wisdom, decided to take Nelly's blood pressure! So he proceded to put the cuff around her leg, then pushed the button. The dog sat there as the cuff inflated, and we found her pressure to be 96 over 78! Not bad!
How is this an answer to prayer? Kody is finally treating Nelly right!
Just thought I'd share.
Todd

Saturday, October 2, 2004 4:25 PM CDT

Not much to report today. And, you know, I don't mind that! Today has been one of those days that has just pitter-pattered on by. Those are nice every once in a while.
Maxine, Kody and I went up around one. She had just been put to bed for a nap. So Kody hugged on her for a little while, then he and I went to the toy store to "look around for Christmas presents!" He totally lost me! Ever notice we never had such fancy toys when we were young?? I don't think it's fair!
After an hour and a half we returned to the hospital. Debbie was up and sitting at the table. We finally found Maxine, who thought Deb was still in rehab. So we sat around and stared at each other for awhile! Are you getting the picture? Nothing happened!
She's really tired today. They have really been giving her the workout! There was a video box laying on the table, and we asked her to read the front cover. She did! Word perfect!
Her left eye has still not opened, although it did look a little better today. She lifted up the lid, but said she couldn't see out of it. The other day she told the doctors that she could see out of it. So I'm not sure what's going on there.
Not much anything else. John and I are getting ready to head back up to the hospital. He worked today and just got home. Yeah, I'm a sissy. I waited till he got here to come back! Just don't want to be blamed if anything else happens! ha!
Keep praying, as always! God's not finished yet!
Todd

Friday, October 1, 2004 7:18 PM CDT

This is a revised version of what I wrote earlier.
People, you need to pray! And I don't say that lightly. Pray for us. The devil seems to be fighting. We get good news, then something knocks us back.
Yesterday, John parked "too close to a dumpster", and his car was towed. $130 later, he had his car.
Fast forward to tonight. After the good day we had (told in the rest of this journal) Maxine and I came home to find the house had been broken into. The back door was ajar, the air conditioner knocked out of the window (which we did not discover 'til John came home forty-five minutes later) and the only thing taken - my medication.
John called police. They came, and after hearing our story took John out back. They immediately decided that it was an inside job and that I was the one who did it. They feel that I staged the break-in so I could get my doctor to give me more of my medication. They asked John if they could interrogate me, but he refused. They said that was the only avenue they could take, so they left. So we are praying that the thief will feel conviction from God and confess!
Now, I've never been accused of anything by the police, and needless to say, I feel lower than a snakes belly. We don't have a suspect. John doesn't need the worry of looking after his house at this time in his life. Our nerves are shot. We don't feel the safest. And we would really like to focus on Debbie. So please pray for us!!

Now on to what I originally posted.
Wow! Where do I begin? Alot happened today.
We arrived at around 11:45. Maxine wanted to help Debbie with her dinner. She was in physical therapy (pt). They said that she was going to eat at noon. We waited... Finally, at five after, (I know, long wait) they brought her out. That was the first I had seen her since I left Monday. She gave me her signature wave that she has.
They told us that Maxine wouldn't be able to help with her dinner, since at breakfast and dinner the physical therapist helps her to learn again how to eat.
So... Maxine and I went to eat in the cafeteria. Yippee... Then we came back. She still had not had dinner. So we went to the neighboring hospital to visit their gift shop. University's is closed due to renovation.
We came back to Debbie's room to try again! Nope. Not to be. She was headed back to physical therapy. So, we did what any good woman like Maxine would do. We went to the mall..... Don't worry David. I kept her money in my pocket!
When we returned to the hospital, Debbie was sleeping. So we sat there awhile reading all about the debate last evening in the paper. She finally woke up after forty-five minutes.
It was supper time. Or, for you refined folk, dinner. Aforementioned was lunch, I guess. Maxine was able to help Debbie in her eating. I left to take care of some business and came back during the meal. Have there ever been those moments in your life when you didn't know whether to laugh or cry? And I mean really cry! Well, to watch Debbie eat is somewhat emotional. She tends to put sugar in the wrong things. She wanted to pour her tea in her pineapple. That sort of thing. And even though it is on the humorous side, it's not the Debbie we know and love. And it shows that there is so much improvement to be made in the time to come.
After .... the evening meal, we took her to the community room. John's parents had come to see her, so it was easier to visit with her there. Maxine asked if she wanted to play the piano. She said she would try a couple of songs. She made me proud! She still remembers chord progressions, and though it is weak, she still has the same style she had before she went in for surgery.
John's dad told her he was amazed at how far she had come. She said "God's been good to me." I heard it with mine own ears! What a testiment of faith!
Then, she and I had to play a duet.. Well, we weren't the Bouker Brothers! But we tried! Maxine wants me to share that we played "Keep on the Firing Line" We used to play that "together" (Maxine felt I needed to put that word in there! As if you wouldn't know) in years gone by. Ok. This is getting long. Hang in there!
Maxine, Debbie and I sang the chorus to a song about the valley, I can't remember which one. John, Maxine and I sang it last Sunday in church. But neither one of us could remember the words. Debbie started repeating them to us! Then she sang her part! Again, it was weak, but it was her part!
I then played "It Takes a Storm Now and Then", a song Debbie played for the trio in college. I could hear her singing along to the chorus behind me. That was emotional! I may post the words to the chorus in another journal. They are incredible!
I kept asking her if she wanted to go back to bed, but she seemed to be in no hurry. But by the time we left, she was getting sleepy.
The doctor visited during lunch/dinner. He said that she will be there for two more weeks, then probably taken to another facility for a little while. He also said that she will be going to an eye doctor concerning the condition of her left eye.
It is so evident coming back this time how prayer has changed things for Debbie. But she has a long way to go. Keep on praying! God's still working.
Todd

Well, I'm here in New York, safe and sound. Listened to part of the debate on the way up! Boy, that will keep you awake! Go....!!! (I'll leave it blank for those of you who are democrats!)
Good news to report again today. Debbie has been moved out of stepdown to rehab! I guess that happened last evening, but I was kept out of the loop until this morning.
She has been making nice progress. There is a community room on the same floor that Debbie is on. Maxine took her in there today. There was a piano across the room. Maxine saw her look at it, so she pushed her over to it. Debbie played the songs "Blessed Assurance" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus"! Momma had to cry! Boy, we are a weepy bunch!
Two doctors came in and tested her on several different things. One of the tests was an eye exam. Without glasses, she read every line! Now sometimes it seems she doesn't have her peripheral vision. But, at least she is able to see, and see well!!!
She is still quite a bit confused. She poured her milk onto the tray instead of into her mouth last night at supper. She held her medicine in one hand, and put her other hand up to her mouth. So it's little things like that she gets turned around on. But, she did that last time, so it's just something she'll have to go through.
Something to pray about. Her left eye has not opened yet. Maxine asked the nurse if it could be nerve damage, and the nurse said it could be. But, she recommended talking to her doctor about it. There is still some swelling on her left side, so pray, and we'll keep you posted on that.
We thank God that he has brought her this far! And He will continue to help her. The prayers have definitely been answered. But we need you to continue praying. Prayer for her husband, her son, her mother and father, and all of her family. But again, keep her front and foremost in your prayers! It's not something I say lightly. We really believe in them!
Todd

Talked to Maxine a little bit ago. They moved Debbie up to Stepdown last evening. She seems to be gaining strength. She actually walked a few steps! That surprised the nurses.
The nurses also compared her strength from side to side. Since she had the stroke, her right side has been affected. The nurses said they could not tell much difference. When the nurses stated how muscular she was, she flexed her muscles!
They asked her several questions. She answered them, for the most part, very well. Debbie was raised in the Central Friends denomination, but now attends the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Syracuse. When asked what church she attends, she responded "Central Friends Pilgrim Holiness." We'll take that!
John has been working now for the past two weeks. It's not easy traveling to work while your wife is in the hospital, so keep him in your prayers. Maxine is taking care of the Kode-miester, so definitely pray for her! And pray for Kody as well. But, as always, keep Debbie lifted up to the One who is able to return her to what she once was.
I plan on returning either later this evening, or tomorrow morning, depending on how I feel. Would appreciate your prayers as I travel.
Todd

Just got off the phone with Maxine. Debbie seems to be staying awake for even longer periods of time today.
Yesterday, if you'll remember, I told you that she was in the middle of eating lunch. She ate ALL of it! So this should give her the energy she needs to heal. She still is getting things confused. Communication from her is still at a minimum.
When I picked Kody up from school yesterday, we went to the hospital. He told me that he missed mommy. Not an easy thing to hear a four year old say with circumstances as they are. I must admit I cried, but I tried to hide that fact from him.
Last night, John made arrangements for him to see Debbie. She didn't say his name or anything when they walked in. She just put her hands out for him. John checked with the nurse who gave permission for him to go to her.
John laid him on the bed and she held him for ten minutes on her chest. Kody was as quiet as a mouse. She would pat him and carress him, and then she tried to rock him. Both of them never saying a word. Maxine and John both stood there silently crying. A bitter-sweet moment, to say the least.
They are talking of moving her up to stepdown today. They haven't totally decided. She is making some decided steps toward recovery, but they want to make sure she is ready for less observance by a nurse. Pray that they make the right decision.
Not much else to tell. I'm planning on going back up tomorrow evening. The medication they just took me off of makes me sleepy, and it will take a few days to wear off. So I'll see how I feel tomorrow evening.
Please continue to pray for Debbie and all of us. Most of her family is back in Indiana, and it's not easy being away. And keep praying for John. It's not a picnic watching your wife go through this, not once, but three times! But keep the focus on Debbie for the most part. She needs your prayers!
Thanks
Todd

Good news today! Debbie was set up in a chair this morning. Then she ate a whole bowl of oatmeal and a whole bowl of applesauce. Even the nurse was surprised!. When I was leaving to come here to update, she was in the middle of eating her dinner... or what hospitals call the stuff they serve as dinner... She is back in bed, but staying awake for long periods of time!
She is a little more alert today. When her dad sat down, instead of standing by her bed, she pointed at him and motioned for him to come by her side. That caused him to cry. In the past few days, the only one she has really responded to was John. So that made his day.
He is still up at the hospital. We are going home today. In fact, as soon as I finish here, I'm going to load up and go pick him up. Then we will head for Indiana.... I'll be coming back on Wednesday evening, but David will stay home. He has to return to work Thursday. Pray for him. It will not be easy to be so far away from his daughter while she is going through all of this!
People, please continue to pray. It almost feels as if maybe the prayers aren't going up as much as when this first started. We need them now more than ever. While Debbie is improving, she has a long way to go. And our bodies are exhausted. So, we as a family still covet your prayers!
Well, I better get on the road. I'll continue to update this even while I'm home. As always, I'll keep in touch with Maxine and John while I'm gone.

Not alot to report today. Just got of the phone with John. He is up at the hospital with her. He says that she is staying awake for longer periods of time today. She's not talking anymore than she has been in the past few days.
She has developed another heat rash. This is probably caused by the antibiotics they have her on. It should go away in a few days.
Sorry there is not anymore to tell. We still appreciate your concern. We still covet your prayers. Debbie has a difficult road ahead of her. But God can smooth the bumps out for her! So keep praying in that regard!
If there is more to tell later on, I'll update.

Another late journal entry. Haven't been around a computer till now!
Debbie is more alert today. The swelling has continued to go down. It is now more evident where the bone flap has been removed. Her left eye, however, is still swollen shut.
Her brother and sister-in-law, and her aunt went to visit her. When James walked in, she looked at him and said, "Oh my goodness!" She also recognized Aunt Marjorie as well. She still tires easily, so she didn't say much in conversation.
Dr. Holsapple was in talking to John when David and I arrived. He gave some great news. There are seven hormones that are produced by the pituitary gland. (Didn't know you were going to get a biology lesson, did ya!) Six of them are easy to produce with medication if the gland does not work. The seventh one, Vasopressin, is very hard to produce with medication. In fact, it sometimes proves deadly if not taken care of properly. Well... (drum roll please) the pituitary is producing that hormone!!! Praise the Lord! So that is an answer to prayer!
It looks that the bone flap replacement will not be put in until January. Dr. Holsapple says that the longer her body has to get rid of infection, the better. Since the replacement is plastic, there will be no blood flow to get rid of infections that may crop up. So they want that spot to be as clean as it possibly can.
On a lighter note, I have figured out why Maxine should never ever drive in this city. She can't SEE!!! She, Kristy, and I were on the elevator going up to see Debbie. A man comes on the elevator pushing a cart with food on it. Maxine looks at the cart and says, "Oh look. He's driving a Camaro cart!" The man really looked at her strange. So I looked at the name of the cart. It said, "CamBro", not "Camaro"... Maybe she just can't read.. Then I found it runs in the family. Earlier, Aunt Marjorie said, "There goes a Wells Fargo truck. Let's rob it!" Charlie said, "Um, that says Wells Cargo, not Fargo.." I think my family's certifiable... Nuts that is!
Anyhoo... The doctor says that Debbie is coming along quite well. He stated that she'll be in and out for a few days, then one morning she'll just wake up and be herself! So, we are just waiting for that day to come! Would be nice if it were tomorrow, but we'll take it whenever it comes!
Thanks for your continued prayers and support. Please keep it up. They continue to not only help her, but sustain us as well as we set by her bedside and take care of her household each day. We will never forget the kindness you all have shown. Please don't give up on praying. It, with Jesus, is all we have! And it's enough!

*This is and updated version of an earlier journal*

Sorry it has taken me longer to update this evening. We left from the hospital to go to Jo (John's sister) and Gary's (her husband) house for dinner. What a feast! Grilled chicken, whole potatoes, corn, salad, jalapeno poppers, cheese sticks, rolls, and banana splits! Oh, my. Not good on the diet! But I enjoyed it anyhow!
Debbie has slept most of the day. Between the time that John left for work and the time we arrived at her bedside, she had been a little more responsive with the nurses and doctors. But with all of the antibiotics they are pumping into her, they knock her out pretty hard!
The infectious disease specialist was in today. They finally received the results of her cultures today. The strain of bacteria is called..... something I cannot pronounce or spell! Actually, John was supposed to bring back the name of it for me to put in here. Alas, he didn't. Instead, he brought me the names of the four infections she has. These are besides the meningitus that she has. She has Staph infection which came from the picc line. She has enterococcus, E-coli, and strep.
The bacteria just so happens to be one that was not affected by the antibiotics they had her on. So they removed her from those and now have her on THREE powerful antibiotics that should knock the infections out in two weeks. The nurse said that these antibiotics are powerhouse antibiotics! Judging by the name of these, they should be effective! Ha!
The family has finally arrived! They were to be here a couple hours earlier than when they actually arrived. On the way here, a semi tire exploded and hit the side of the van they are traveling in. It knocked the mirror off of the van, maybe a few scratches here and there, but no injuries! Praise the Lord. But they had to get all the information for insurance purposes, so that put them behind.
When they arrived, they brought FOURTEEN boxes of food, paper products, toiletries, monies etc. donated to them by James and Kristy's church, workplaces, and Gracie's schoolmates! It is truly an amazing sight! Wal-mart gift cards, total amount unknown, were also sent! Isn't that awesome?!?!? And more is on the way! Incredible!
Thanks for your prayers today. I believe they are what kept my family from harm. Keep on praying for Debbie. She's a far cry from where she was, but she has a far way to go. God is able!
Todd

Well, you all know the phrase "life is like a roller coaster ride." These past two weeks have been just that! I think it rivals anything that Cedar Point or King's Island could think up!
John came back from seeing Debbie this morning. She is not at all responsive today. They have tried to get her to squeeze hands and such, but she just doesn't seem to want to do anything. She did open her eye once for the doctor. So they were taking her down for another scan. We don't know the results of that as of yet.
We are getting ready to go up. I'll let you know when I get back if anything has changed.
Keep praying!
Oh. I forgot to mention. Debbie's older brother, James, his wife Kristy, their daughter, Alisa "Grace", younger brother to Debbie, Charlie, and aunt Marjorie are traveling in today from Indiana! Pshew! That was definitely too long of a sentence! They are to be here through Sunday. So pray for safety for them on the road today. And pray for our sanity! That will make 10 people plus a human wanna-be (Nellie) in this small house! That will definitely prove to be interesting! This should really test the strength of prayer!
That said, I would like to give an answer to prayer! The human wanna-be (mentioned earlier in this journal) has learned to sleep at her end of the bed, therefore allowing my mind to be fresh an renewed once I arise from my bed! Ready, once again, to write such brilliant journal entries such as the one you are now reading! Ok. I'll remove my tongue from it's position of being firmly implanted in my cheek!
Seriously, though, please continue to pray for Deb. She is definitely going through alot. We hate to see her in this condition, and pray that it won't be long till she is her normal self again! Thanks!
Todd

Just back from the hospital.
Her pastors were there when we arrived. Can I say what two wonderful people they are! They know just when to be there! They have been so supportive with their prayer and concern. You know that anytime you need anything, they will be there to help! It seems they can sense when we need prayer, and it always has been right when we have needed it the most! It's obvious they are in tune with God. Thanks Sis. Wallick and Sis. Dickerson!
When Maxine and I went back to see Debbie, she woke up just as we entered the room! I, of course, had to see if she recognized us. She did. She talked to us! They had her intubated yesterday after the surgery, but they took that out this morning. Her voice is very low... Lower than her dad's! I told her so, and she smiled and tried to laugh. In fact, she laughed twice while we were back with her. And it sounded like Debbie! In the past week, when she has talked, it was in a voice that seemed far away. Today, it sounded (except for the fact that she's a bass) like Debbie. Now, one sentence would be coherent, then the next would not. So, her mind comes and goes.
Her swelling on the left side of the face has went down quite alot! The infection is still draining, but they still think they will remove the tubes tomorrow.
She wears out quickly. After five minutes of interaction with her mother and I, she was back to sleep. She obviously has a long road ahead of her. But the difference in today and two days ago is huge! Maxine walked out of the room with such a look of relief on her face. She walked down the hall thanking Jesus for His help!
Debbie always has been a live wire! The nurses have written on her chart that she is "tricky"! She loves to pull the tubes out of her nose and such. So they had to put mittens on her hands. Well, she found out how to get those off as well! Even though that may be humorous, I would ask that you pray that God would give her a peacefulness and take away the restlessness. Even in the state of mind that she is in, I believe God can settle in with her and calm her.
Thanks again for your prayers.
Todd

Haven't been up to the hospital as of yet. As soon as I post, we are going up. I did take David up a few minutes ago. Maxine had a little mishap at KFC and had to come home to get fresh clothes! Isn't gravy a wonderful thing!
On to what I know you are really wanting to read about. John has been up with Debbie since early this morning. The doctor came in and said that the swelling is going down. In fact, so much so that they are thinking of taking the drainage tubes out tomorrow. Coming out of these types of surgeries, the patients are a little fearful. Debbie has been holding John's hand all day, squeezing his hand every now and then. She's been trying to talk, but she mumbles everything, so it's tough to hear what she is trying to say. Whether she is making sense or not, we don't know.
They measured her head this morning. She will have to wear a helmet for the next three months, except for when she is in bed. This is, of course, to protect the spot where they removed the bone. If I know Debbie, she'll stay in bed alot! Then again, she never has been one to let such things keep her down! It's looks to be around Christmas time when they will go in and replace the bone. What a Christmas present...
I think that is it for right now. Again, keep praying. And keep posting. I think as of right now, there are close to one hundred and fifty messages in the guestbook! And close to four thousand hits on this site! That is such an encouragement! It shows the love and support that Debbie has in all her friends. In fact, I don't know of anyone that has friends like Debbie has.
So, thanks again! The prayers are being felt. Keep on keeping on with the prayers! We don't take them for granted. They are definitely what makes the difference!
Also, pray for the nurses that take care of her. Pray that they keep their hands clean and that they do what's best for her. I know that sounds funny, but as far as we can tell, that is where the bacteria had to come from. You would think that health care workers would think better about such things. I believe God can remind them to wash up! Debbie can't afford to have more infections. So just add that to your prayers. Thanks!
Todd

P.S. Someone suggested that I let you all know that if you missed last night's journal that you may want to check it out. Not sure why they want you to, but I said I'd let you know!

Hi all. Thought I'd leave another entry just before I hit the hay.
John called the nurse right before he turned in. She is the same one that Debbie had last night. She stated that last evening, Debbie was really restless and didn't look well at all. She said that tonight she looked alot better! And that, after surgery! So that definitely makes the family feel better! Other than that, nothing to report along those lines. Oops! Yes there is! Debbie did squeeze the nurse's hand in response to let her know that she was in pain. So, that shows that she is somewhat coherent! Another positive that we will gladly accept!
Now I realize that today has been a day of urgent prayer! So I hope it's no bother to ask for one more urgent request today. I've thought long and hard about how to say this. Actually, more along the lines of whom to request prayer for. You see, Kody has developed the habit of tying shoes onto Nellie's feet.. And Nellie has NOT developed the love of shoes! So I don't know if I'm to request prayer for Kody, to not do that anymore, or for Nellie to have the patience to put up with Kody! So, I guess, either one you feel laid upon your heart, pray that way! Please don't judge me too harshly about the humor. Maxine and I are sitting here needing a little laugh. So I just thought I'd let you in on the fun. Hope that's ok!!
Now, back to the serious matter at hand. We do need you to keep Debbie high on your prayer list. We still get so many reports of churches that have her on their prayer chains. And that is such an encouragement! Thank you!
Todd

Ok. Where do I start. Well, the surgery is over. Lasted about forty-five minutes.
This morning, the doctors noticed that she was really lethargic. We noticed it yesterday. But, they waited until this morning to do an MRI. They discovered that there was infection that needed to be taken care of. So they immediately took her in for surgery.
Once inside, they found a half inch pool of infected fluid between the skin and the skull. It was pushing against the skull which in turn was pushing against the brain, causing her to be unresponsive.
They drained the fluid off and then removed about a three inch circular piece of skull bone. They discarded the bone. In around three months, they will open her back up and put in a plastic piece made to look like her original skull bone.
They don't know what the infection actually is. They have sent some cultures in to determine that. They won't know for around twenty-four hours. They do know that there is E-coli in her blood stream. They have no clue how that occured either.. Usually that is in the digestive system (if I remember correctly), not the blood stream.
The good news is that the brain was very relaxed, which means it's healing. It was not swollen like they had thought it might be. It also doesn't appear that there was any infection in the brain itself, but only time will tell as to whether it is infected or not.
The antibiotics are not reaching the infection because of there being so much fluid in the area. So they have put in some ports to allow that area to drain on it's own. Those will be left in for a few days. This will allow the infection to drain, being pushed out by new fluids made by the body, thus doing what the antibiotics should have done.
Dr. Holsapple was very honest. He said that this was a major setback. In fact, we may be back to square one. They are keeping her sedated for a while to allow her body to regain some strength. They have her back on the breathing machine as well. As soon as she is allowed to awake, we will see if she's responsive.
The Dr. also said that this is obviously very serious. It is going to have to be watched very carefully. He, being an athiest, said we need to keep our fingers crossed. I think you know what I'm going to ask you to do, although I don't think I need to ask. We need to pray, and pray, and then when we are done... pray some more! We don't know what the days ahead hold for Debbie, but God does.
I know I've probably forgotten some important things. If I have, I'll let you know as soon as Maxine reminds me! I feel like this whole journal entry is a convoluted mess! My mind is going forty mile an hour (which is fast for me) and I can't get me thoughts straight! I may come back later on and erase this entry and start all over. But I know you all are wondering, so at least this will give you some idea!
Thanks for praying. Keep it up! She needs it!
Todd

Going to make this quick. We are headed to the hospital. Debbie is going in for emergency surgery. As far as I can understand, the bone across her forehead is causing pressure on the brain. So they are somehow going to release the pressure. Have no clue how. Maxine stuck her head in the door and that's all she hollered. Said to quickly post this and get going!
Please PRAY!!!!

Hi all. Just came back from a wonderful dinner across the street at John and Sharon's house! If you are ever in the area of Syracuse, just stop by the house and say that Todd said they could cook a mean meal for you!
It looks like they are going to go ahead and move Debbie up to stepdown tomorrow. They had wanted to move her there today, but no bed was available. The doctor on duty tends to think that Debbie has been in ICU too long. He thinks she has ICU Psychosis. That happens because they are awakened every couple of hours and never get the rest they really need. They believe that this could be the reason why Debbie is not coming around very well. So he believes the sooner they get her out of ICU the better. In stepdown, she will be allowed to sleep on a more regular basis.
I think John is headed back up to the hospital for the evening. I will keep on keeping you posted when I find more out.
Keep on praying.
Todd

I'm back again. Just came back from the hospital. Debbie isn't having a good day. She is really out of it. She did recognize me, but she couldn't remember her husband's name.. Not good. For John. And, I'll be honest, he's not dealing too well with it at all. I can understand that he wants her better. We all do. The doctor has told us that there will be these days, but John tends to forget that! He worries that all is not going like it should. So please keep John in your prayers a little extra today.
Dr. Holsapple, who is her main surgeon, was in, and he said she is right where she should be in her recovery. He said that her swelling will take longer to go down this time since the surgery was so much more involved than the last. He said he is rather pleased at what he sees. He held up two fingers and asked Deb how many there were. She responded correctly. She shook his hand and smiled at him when he came in and when he left. What manners!
Maxine and I were in there when he was in. John was not. And even though we told John what the Doc had to say, it just does not seem to sink in. He's very worried. I know I keep stressing that point, but I just want to get across that John needs prayer. He's going through alot as well. It's not easy seeing your Love go through something like this.
They have her ready to go to stepdown, but John is trying to get them to change their mind. He is waiting to see a doctor. I'll try to let you know as soon as I hear what happens.
Thanks again!
Todd

Hi. I am in between visits to the hospital. Took David up a while ago, and now I'm back for Maxine! What fun. Don't know why Maxine didn't go up when I took David... Oh, yeah. She was cleaning and washing (ok. she's standing right behind me while I type. I have to say these things! I'll tell you later that she was really lying around doing nothing!)...
There really isn't a thing to tell right now. She had a headache this morning, so they gave her a percocet. It knocked her out. She is sawing logs. So David and I stood there and stared at her awhile. He decided to stay while I came to pick up Maxine and Kody.
The swelling is going down in her eye. It's still swollen pretty good, but it is slowly coming down. They said the infections are coming along nicely. No new ones either. So, I guess the addage "No news is good news" is true today!
If anything changes, I'll let you all be the second to know!
Keep praying. We keep telling her every day how many people are praying for her. Thanks!
Todd

Hi. Before I forget, some of you have not noticed that you can read all of the journals from the beginning. So if you think you may have missed one, I think that right below this journal, there is a link to view all the old ones.
Just returned from seeing her again. She is doing great right now! Maxine and I were talking to her, and out of the clear blue she asked for a certain snack she likes. So I went to the hospital cafeteria and got it for her. I would like to tell you that she was very lady-like and ate it in little bites, but..... It didn't last long! She took her first bite, and she acted like she was in heaven! You'd think that the hospital food wasn't that good! Imagine that!
I can't help but stand there and watch for signs of the old Debbie. I don't stare, just keep an eye out for such things. Well, here she and John are, winking at each other, (well, with Deb's left eye swollen shut, it looked more like she was blinking!) and I just told them that it was making me sick! She wrinkled up her nose at me! Can you imagine! But that is so like her! Her dad cried when I told him that. I wondered why he was crying, but he pointed out that it showed she still has her sense of humor. This kind of surgery can change a person's personality, so it is a relief to know her's is still intact!
It looks like they may be moving her up to stepdown tomorrow. Yeah. She's on the sixth floor right now. Stepdown is on the seventh. So she moves "UP" to "stepDOWN". Oh well. Leave it to me to see the humor in that! But, that is good news!
Oh. I almost forgot. Kody was allowed to go in and see his mommy. We were getting ready to leave and John came running to get him. So I'm sure Kody was thrilled! They aren't back yet. So I'll have to let you know how that went.
So, today was a good day! She made some good progress, and for that we are thankful. And again, it's due to the prayers of God's people. Keep it up! I feel like a race is being run, and you are the ones cheering her on with your prayers. Thank you so much for them. We are so indebted to you all!
Todd

Just returned from visiting Debbie. She is some better today. She is recognizing people. Which is better than she did yesterday. She hugged John and kissed him twice this morning. That made his day!
Jenny had asked me to tell Debbie hi and to see if she would remember her. Debbie replied "That Jenny is so worried I won't remember her!" And she said that with a grin the size of Texas!
She is talking in a whisper today. I asked her why. She stated that she didn't want everyone hearing what she had to say. I said that there was no one around to hear, but she pointed to a nurse and gave me this eye that seemed to say that the nurse was probably a spy! I told her the nurse could probably keep everything a secret, but she still whispers..
They had her standing up today for physical therapy. She did real good. They tested her balance, and it was terrific! Plus they had her doing alot of hand excercises. They wore her out! She was sawing logs when I left. LOUD!!
She has developed a rash on both of her shoulders. It was pretty bad last night. But it is getting better. They don't know what caused it. Could be a number of things.
As far as the infections are concerned, the nurse said that they were on top of it and that they didn't seem to be a threat! And the same goes for the meningitus! They have her on a ton of antibiotics, so they should take care of it. Plus, they were able to replace all of the tubes yesterday evening. Early this morning, they called around one to get John's ok on replacing the picc. So that is done as well.
She had not felt like eating much yesterday. But, today she ate half of everything they gave her. When I told her we were going to get something to eat, she said to bring something back for her. But she was asleep when we returned. I talked to her nurse and he said that if she felt up to it, we could bring her some of her favorite food to eat anytime! Hello Big Mac!!
We picked up Kody from school today before we went to the hospital. He is doing so good! You all must really be praying for him! He misses his mommy so much, though. So do continue to pray for him.
I want to ask you all to put up with my writing. I'm not writing a book here! I may not spell certain words right, or maybe post something the way you would have, but bear with me. It's all about Debbie here. As much as I am a perfectionist, I do make mistakes, believe it or not! I may get messed up on my medical terminology, but as long as God knows what is going on and you get the meaning of what to pray for, I guess that's what matters!
Thank you all again for praying for Debbie and caring so much. She is a treasure to us! And I can tell you all love her as well!
Todd

Hi all. Before I get to why you are really reading this page, I feel that I must address an issue. I don't know if Nelly has paid some people off, but the e-mail that I am receiving on her behalf is just unbelievable! *sigh* I can't even beat out a dog! I must say I'm very hurt.
Now, on to more serious matters. And they are serious today. Debbie has FOUR infections, beside the menengitus. So they have had to remove all of her tubes and put new ones in. That includes the catheter, the picc, and I don't know what else. At this time, they are having a problem putting the picc back in. She has very small veins, and they have a very difficult time working with them. So please pray that they can get this done quickly. I know it's very uncomfortable for Debbie to have them poking around like that.
Debbie is really confused right now. They tried to get her to tell them who David was. She couldn't figure it out. Finally they asked her if he was her dad. She said "No. He's much older than this guy!" David didn't know whether to take that as a compliment or insult... But they think that this confusion is a result of the medication and the infections combined.
Please continue to pray. I know I sound like a broken record, but being in the position I'm in and seeing the direct line between the prayer and the answer, I see how important it is to pray. And I know you all have been there as well. We love Debbie incredibly and want her well.
Thanks for all you do. It is so much appreciated.
Todd

Ah! Another sleep-filled night with Nelly (Arf) at my side! The wonder dog.. Yes, I'm back in New York! By the way, sarcasm heavily intended in that opening line. You try to share a sofa with a fifteen pound dog who thinks she owns it! I do think she was more excited to see me than the rest of the family though... Not sure what that meant! *sigh*
Just returned from seeing Debbie. I was disappointed that she did not recognize me. She called me "Hightower". Have no clue where that came from! She said to give her some time and she would remember who I was. I helped her pick out her menu for dinner and breakfast for tomorrow morning.
Later on, I told her that I was going out to the waiting room for a bit and told her that I loved her. She replied "I love you too, Todd." I think my mouth flew open! It didn't take her long to remember me! It made my heart feel alot lighter!
While in there, a disease specialist came in. He was a different nationality, so he was difficult to understand. He informed us that the count or whatever it is they look at is borderline on the menengitus. So it may or may not be menengitus. It may just be an infection from her catheter. But either way, they are treating it as if it were menengitus, just to be on the safe side. Even if it is menengitus, it won't be life threatening to her since they are treating it this early in the game.
Her fever is down. She does have an infection in her left eye. It is still swollen shut. We have been wondering how her eye sight is since the surgery. So we asked her if she could tell us what time it was on the clock across the room. Without glasses or contacts, she told us the time! It was such a great feeling to realize that not only could she see the time, she could tell time! David cried. He's very emotional about every step she takes in the process of healing. With this kind of surgery, you never know what she'll lose as far as brain function. So every little thing is a big thing.
It seems like it had been an eternity since I was last up there. But it had only been since Wednesday. I guess when someone that close to you is lying in a hospital, it tends to slow life down!
Well, enough about me. That's not why you check out this page! I'll try to remember that!
Keep praying. I know it's still needed! Keep posting. She'll have a ball reading them when she gets home. But most of all, like I've already said, pray. That's the main thing. Don't let up until this is over. We love her and want her well! And prayer is what moves the hand of God!

Well, I told you all that I would not post any more today, but there has been somewhat of a development. The Dr's have now said that Deb has menengitis. This is some cause for concern and prayer. It seems that one day we get good news and the next not so good news. Keep Praying!

Saturday, September 18, 2004 1:09 PM CDT

This is John again. Deb's temperature is gone! That is another answer to prayer. Todd also wanted me to tell you all that there will be no more news until tomorrow because they want Deb to rest for today. Keep Praying!

Friday, September 17, 2004 5:38 PM CDT

I promise I'll try to keep this short.
Maxine just called and wanted me to request prayer. Debbie has been having little bouts with a temperature. Sometimes 101 degrees. However she says that she has a 103 degree temperature right now. They don't know if it's due to the catheter, the feeding tube, or whether it's menengitus. So if you could pray right now as you read this, we would appreciate it.
Thanks
Todd

Hi. Great to see all of the posts in the guestbook. I can't wait for her to get out of the hospital and see all of these! Of course, I just can't wait for her to get out of the hospital, period! For good! Never to have to have this surgery again! And God can do it!
While writing this, Maxine called. Just hung up from her. Debbie asked how Kody was doing just a minute ago. So Maxine shared how he was doing. Then she asked if Charlie was going home soon. She also asked if Maxine was still staying upstairs in the house. Maxine told her she was getting better, to which Debbie agreed! This all means she's having a good day! And that's awesome! The doctors have predicted up and down days, and we have expected them. But two good days in a row! We'll just have to continue this!
Of course, I believe this is a direct result of prayer. From you all. I keep getting reports from people I speak with of how their churches are praying for Debbie. Special prayer. And these are churches that for the most part don't know Debbie. But I think that's the awesome thing about prayer. You don't have to know a person to take them to God and ask Him to take care of them. All that matters is God knows her, and that's enough! And boy, is He proving He knows her! This probably sounds crazy, but I just choose to believe that so many people are praying to Him about her that He can't hardly hear the other prayer concerns coming to Him because of the din! That sounds childish, but that's how I feel!
I need you to bear with me a moment here. John Fike has no idea I'm going to type this. No one does. They'll probably kill me once they read this post. But, here goes. John has had to take off work due to this. As you can imagine, money is tight. Now I know that someone is already trying to get help in this area. And I appreciate it! We all do. But if you would, pray that God would take care of John and Deb financially as well through all of this. I guess I feel for them in this area because I'm there myself. Yet it takes all the pride out of a person to ask for help, so I'm doing that for them. OK. I'll move on!
I'll be leaving tomorrow to go back up to New York, so I don't believe I'll have time to post. If anything changes, I'll have John post.
Something just struck me. Have you noticed when he posts, it is short. Yet when I post, it's a mile long. Yet he's the talker... Yi Yi Yi! *sob*
Keep praying. Keep reading. Keep posting. We thank you so much for the support! I'll keep in touch.
Todd

How I wish you all could be in the position that I'm in! I get to read all of the posts from you all saying that you are praying, and I get to see the results as well! I don't know if I've ever been able to witness the direct results of prayer like I have in the past week!
Today, the doctors told us that Debbie had been talking quite a bit through the night. And she's continued to do that today as well!
Her speech is a little slow. Ok. It's just plain slow. Except for the time she said she needed to use the restroom! Then she had no problem getting that out. Ok. I know. Too much information! But, I have to say that this is an exciting day. John took a picture of Kody in today and asked her if she knew who it was. She tried to get "Kody" out, but it was a little bit of a struggle. But, that shows that not only can she see, but she recognizes people! And more on that note.. The nurse pointed at David and Charlie, asking Debbie if she knew who they were. She replied that they were "Dad and Uncle Charlie." She calls Charlie that because of Kody. Then she looked at Charlie and asked him if he had gone to school today.. So she has things confused a little. But, she IS talking. A great improvement since yesterday.
We still don't know how good her eyesight is and probably won't know until she's better able to communicate.
All I can say is thanks for your prayers! It's not over though. So keep on praying. We are so grateful for your concern and love you all have shown.
Todd

Getting ready to head back to Indiana. I have a couple doctors appointments that I have to tend to. I should be back in Syracuse Saturday night. Until then, I'll keep in contact up here so I can keep you posted on what is going on.
A couple of good things to report today. They have Debbie sitting up this afternoon. She still doesn't talk and seems very groggy. But she is responding much better than yesterday. In fact, they had her swab out her own mouth while I was with her. She was sloppy, but she still did it! And at this moment, we will take anything!
When John went in this morning, he said "Hi sweetie". She looked up at him and lifted her hand and patted him on the face. As you can well imagine, that was a tender moment for him!
Please keep praying. The doctors have said that it is a day by day process. Tomorrow could be the total opposite of today. But I believe that with prayer, it can be another good day.
I'll keep in touch.

Thought I'd write one more time before I try to catch a few winks. You know, (this is real spiritual - be prepared) in spending the past few nights with Nellie (the dog) so John could get some undisturbed sleep, I've really begun to lack in the sleep department myself! But in Nellie's defense, with the medication I'm on, I don't get sleep much anyway. Told you that was to be a real spiritual moment there.
Anyway, back to the serious matter at hand. The doctors informed us tonight that Debbie is looking at four to six more weeks in the hospital. Four of those weeks will be for therapy. This was a little bit of a disappointment for us. But, we would rather them keep her until she is physically and mentally able to come home. We felt the last time they sent her home too soon. So we just want what's best.
I felt that Debbie was responding a little better this evening than earlier today. Also, it seemed that her swelling on the outside of her head has gone down, even though the swelling on the inside is still increasing.
I feel as if I'm rambling, so I'll shut up before it gets any worse. As I always say, please continue to keep her and her family in your prayers. I was informed that the bus convention in Pennsylvania had special prayer for her last evening. That means several thousand there alone were interceding on her behalf! Thank you so much. You'll never know how much it has meant.

Just back from the hospital. A couple of things to tell. The MRI results showed that the swelling is increasing. This could continue through Thursday or Friday. It's hard to tell what "normal" is, because each case is different. So I can't say whether this is normal or not. The last two surgeries, Debbie was speaking to us that night. But, those were less invasive surgeries. And I guess that's what we have to keep in mind.
There are no signs of another stroke. She is still using all four limbs. But she is less responsive today. They sat her up this morning hoping that it would cause her to come around. But it didn't change a thing. The only way to get her to respond today is to vigorously rub her chest bone. That causes her to swat your hand away. She is very restless. Very uncomfortable.
Up until today, the doctors have shown no concern with her status. However, they told us today that she should have tried to speak at this point. That has them a bit concerned. But, as already pointed out, each person responds differently.
Her pastors were up there with me this afternoon. They had prayer with her before they left. In Sister Wallick's prayer, she thanked God in advance that Debbie would once again play the piano, sing and be church secretary once more when she is released from the hospital. I have to admit, this softy cried. No. Sobbed... Ok. I'm an emotional wreck right now! It's tough to see her just laying there. I want to hear her laugh once again. I want to see the spark in her eyes once more. Sorry. Just speaking my heart.
Please continue to pray. I hope this entry made sense. If not, try to understand! But, really, pray, pray, pray. I can't stress it enough. It's going to be a tough road for Debbie. I know that she has made the statement that if she couldn't have her right mind, she would rather go to be with the Lord. So pray that it would be God's will that she would have her total being. She has a family who heavily depends on her. One who loves her so much.
Thanks for putting up with my ramblings.
Todd

I'm back! Thanks to John across the street for getting me back on here! Quite the computer whiz!
Getting ready to go to the hospital. Have some not so great news to report.
They are taking Deb in for another MRI. She is not responding as they would like her to at this stage. She is not coherent at all. She tried to climb out of the bed twice yesterday. She isn't really waking up. They've had her off of sedation for two days now, and there's been no change. So please PRAY for this new problem. God has done so much in her behalf already, and this is not too big a thing for Him to take care of.
I must say it's not easy sitting there and looking at what is the outward shell of Deb, but not seeing any response from the Deb inside the shell. Pray for her mother. She is having a very difficult time with this.
I want to say something on behalf of the littlest one in the family. And, NO, I'm not talking about the dog, Nellie (or Shiloh, him, boy, girl or whatever Kody feels like calling her!) Kody has been one trooper through this whole thing. His attitude has been wonderful. Even though he misses his mommy terribly, he hasn't "acted out" his frustrations at all! Please pray for him. I know it can't be easy for a child his age to be taken from his mommy, not once, but three times in his little life. He's a special child.
Well, I better get ready to go. Thanks for your continued prayers and support. The guestbook is looking good!
Todd

Monday, September 13, 2004 8:00 PM CDT

This is John again. The computer in NY is down at the moment and Todd wanted me to update you all. Deb has been awake some, however she does not recognize anyone. This was expected by the medical team. Todd said that the swelling has went down some, so that it good news. Any way, not much to report tonight, but Keep Praying!

Monday, September 13, 2004 10:40 AM CDT

A little bit of a setback today. Last evening, they took Debbie down for a microscopic MRI. We found out this morning that shortly after the surgery, she had a light stroke. They believe that this is why her right side was not responding. However, they do believe that she should recover fully from this stroke!
They also found that they did not get all of the tumor. There is a small part left inside. So, they are planning on shooting some radiation to get rid of it. They said it should take care of it.
Now on to some good news. She did take John's hand today and put it to her mouth as if trying to kiss it! They are planning on taking her off the ventilator today. Actually, she is breathing on her own, but they have left the tubes in just in case.
We are getting ready to head up to the hospital. Keep praying. She really needs it. Keep posting as well. This will be a good thing for her to see once she gets home!

Ok. How do I start? I'm crying like a baby. Jenny and I just got back from seeing Debbie. They stopped sedating her for a few minutes to do some testing. She opened her eye and started moving around. I said "Hi Debbie. Jenny's here to see you." She looked around and found Jenny. Jenny said "I'm going to be going back to Indiana today." And DEBBIE WAVED!!! No kidding! She actually WAVED. TWICE!! Not only that, it was with her right arm. Yesterday, she couldn't move it. Today, she's squeezing with it, moving it, in fact, so much they are going to have to tie it down like her left arm. The reason for this is that she wants to pull the tubes out.
The nurse says that she is making a faster recovery than last surgery! She moved both feet on command. And when the nurse asked her to move her left thumb, she moved her right one as well! So things are looking great. I mean, she recognized us! And they weren't for sure whether she would for the first week or not! Praise the Lord!
Another thing. We had been informed by the doctors that her incision would come down to her right eye. So, obviously, there would be a scar there. Well, we found out today that they didn't have to make that big of an incision. It came down a little bit lower on the side of her head, but ended in the same spot in front of her head, just at the edge of her hairline! So that was very good news as well!
We feel so relieved to know that she recognizes us and can see! With this kind of surgery, you never know what kind of brain damage can occur. But, it has to have been prayer!
No we realize that there are going to be tough days ahead. The only thing that will bring us all through is your prayers.
I'm getting ready to take David and Maxine up to see her. Continue to pray. We love her so much.
Oh, one other thing. They are going to insert a certain kind of tube (pic tube?)into her so that they won't have to keep poking around to find a vein. She has very small veins. The tube goes in the arm and up into her heart. Now there are some concerns in doing this. There's a small chance that it could cause clots to form. Not likely, but is possible. Also, it could cause infection. So pray that everything goes well.
I'll continue to keep you all posted. You have been incredible! It is such a blessing to know that people are praying. No. You are bombarding Heaven on Debbie's behalf! And for that we are so grateful!
Till next time.
Todd

Sunday, September 12, 2004 11:41 AM CDT

It's amazing what sleep will do for a person's spirits! Woke up feeling a little refreshed today!
Getting ready to eat a meal that Maxine and Jenny Gardner prepared... I know Maxine's a good cook, but we'll have to wait and see if Jenny is here to poison us or not!
I guess that they are going to keep Debbie sedated for another 24 hours. They had talked of taking her off of that today, but they want to get a "microscopic" MRI to see what's going on inside her head before they allow her to come out of sedation. We want what's best for her, so we are putting our confidence in their hands and praying that God directs them! Last surgery, they let her out of the hospital too soon, so this time, we told them to make sure she's ready to come home before they allow her to!
We will be going up to the hospital after we eat the wonderful meal (smells good!), so when I return, I'll post an update.
Keep praying! It makes all the difference in Debbie's world! And ours!

Thank you all so much for the kind words of encouragement. You don't know how they have spoken to us, the family. And I can't wait for Debbie to be able to read them and have them bless her as well!
This entry is going to be a little different. While the focus is definitely (as well it should be) on Debbie, I have another request. It may seem rather strange, but I feel it is something I need to ask.
In all the good things that have happened in the past couple of days, Satan is still at work. He is working through stress to pull us apart. I want to be careful not to give him any credit, because he certainly doesn't deserve any, but he has worked on our nerves to the point that we struggle with understanding what each other truly means in what we say. This is really baring my soul! Now don't think that we have been fighting with each other! That's not the case. There have just been some misunderstandings, and they can sometimes tend to look bigger than what they really are! I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say. We are human, and we are exhausted! Just remember the family up here in prayer! We truly need it. Although we feel relieved that the surgery is over, and we know God isn't finished, the stress of what Debbie and us have went through is taking it's toll on us.
I think Satan is angry at what God has done, so he's working at pulling us apart in other areas. So please pray for our minds, that God would help us to be more understanding of each other and that we would truly be Christ-like towards each other as we are crammed like sardines in this small house! Oh, and that Maxine would understand that I'm a good driver and I do know where I'm going! Ha!
We do covet your prayers. I can't state that enough! Keep Debbie in your prayers as well. She's such a witness! What a servant she is for the Lord. I can see on the nurses faces that they understand that they are working with a very special person!
Hope this entry hasn't been too crazy! We love you all, and are so thankful for every one of you!
Todd

Just a note before I hit the hay. Just came back from visiting Debbie... She's still sedated. They think they'll bring her out of that tomorrow. Before John left tonight, they took her off of her sedative temporarily for some tests. They gave her several commands and she was able to do most of them. She did struggle a little with her right side. But her right eye was able to follow them from side to side. She tried to open her left eye, but it is too swollen at this point. But it was great to see that she is doing that well!
Her face has really become swollen. That is to be expected though. Although everything has gone well up to this point, there will be such a feeling of relief when we find out how much eyesight she has and also to hear her speak her family member's names! Hopefully, some of that will be seen tomorrow.
Keep praying. There's still a long road ahead for her.
Todd

Just went up and saw Debbie. She's looking great! I expected to see a very bruised woman, but aside from swelling and a turban around her head, she looks great. She's under sedation, but still is moving and opening her one eye (the other one is swollen shut.) She does respond when you talk to her.
She is struggling with dehydration. So they are going to give her medication to clear that up. Otherwise, she is doing much better than even the doctors had hoped! They have had to tie her left arm down because she doesn't like to have the tube in her mouth. So they have to watch that!
Keep praying. She's got a long way to go.
Keep posting. It's been an inspiration for all of us. Keep praying.
Todd

Just a quick journal before we go to the hospital. For the ones who haven't read the journal right after the surgery, go to journal history and read it. It tells of so many answers to prayer!!!!
John is at the hospital. He called to tell us some good news. He overheard one of the doctors talking. The doctor said that it's "ALL GONE!!!!!!!!" Praise the Lord!!! The doc said, "We just went in there and got it!" Speaking as if it were nothing to get it done. If you only knew how they had spoken of this tumor before, how difficult it would be to get it out, how IMPOSSIBLE it would be to get it out, you would understand how much of a miracle this is! And an answer to prayerS! As far as I know, she is still asleep. They are allowing her to wake up on her own instead of waking her themselves.
Please continue to pray. It's not over. But we are definitely on the better side of things than what we were yesterday! Also, continue to post. Right now, it is an encouragement for us, the family, to go on there and see the praise to God for what he has done, and it will be awesome for Debbie to see once she is home!
Thanks again for all your prayers. They have been what has made the difference!
I'll keep you posted.
Todd

Ok. Can I hear a chorus of The Doxology!?!? The surgery was a complete success! They were able to get 99.9999 percent of the tumor. If anything is left, it could be compared to dust particles. In a couple of months, they may shoot some radiation in there to make sure it's dead.
Today, some people felt it laid on their hearts to pray that the tumor would not be entertwined with the optic nerve like it was believed to be. When the surgeon came out, he said that for some strange reason the tumor was below the optic nerve, not entertwined like he had thought! Although he is an athiest, he had to concede that it was prayer that had made the difference! He said that next time he has to have a surgery like this, he'll ask us to pray for that to be the case, except to make the tumor on top instead of on bottom!
They were even able to save the pituitary gland! Most of the time, in these situations, the tumor surrounds the pituitary gland. But for some reason, (and we know why) the gland was just out there in the open! They had believed that it would have to go with the tumor. But, since it was in the position it was in, it's still connected! Now it's not for sure whether it will be of any use, so at least initially, they will have to keep her on meds to help her body function.
I'm not going to sugar coat this. It was a very aggressive surgery. They had to move alot of things around. Her brain, her optic nerve, her pituitary gland. So the next few days are going to be tough ones. There will be some behavioral problems. There will be short term memory loss. It's going to be TOUGH! So she's going to need a lot of prayer! It's still not for sure how much of her eye sight she will have. She may have very little, or she may have better than before the surgery. It's just a wait and see situation. So pray in that regard as well.
John just came home from the hospital with good news... No. Make that GREAT news. Dr. Holsapple just came out of Debbie's room and told John's parents and sister that she is already responding to five test, one of which was a light test! That means it's looking good for her eyesight! The doctor was even excited, and if that excites him, then it surely excites me!!!
This ended up being a seven and a half hour to seven hours and fifty nine minutes surgery. Longest day of my life! She won't remember any of this.
The doctors have asked that she get alot of rest. So, kindly put, that means that she shouldn't receive visitors. I know with all of the friends that she has, they want to be here. But she is going to need a month's worth of rest at the very least. While we appreciate the love that friends want to show her, what she needs now more than anything is prayer and REST! So please write to her, or post on here. We'll get the messages to her. But for the first month or so, pray. Don't mean this to be rude, just looking out for the best interest for Debbie.
Thank you all for praying. When an athiest doctor has to agree that prayer made the difference, there's not any room for argument that that is the case! We are deeply indebted to you for your prayers and interest. But, it's not over yet. Keep on praying. She still needs them!
I'll be posting some pictures of her on here as soon as she's up to getting some taken. So keep watching for them!
Just one more thing that I've neglected during this whole thing. The pictures on this web site are courtesy of Jenny Gardner. You know. She's the one who posted in the guestbook and thought it asked for her county instead of countRy and put Clinton instead of USA!! In fact, that is her elbow in the picture on the front page! Isn't that cool!?!? hehehehe
Also, don't forget to sign the guestbook. Even if you've signed before. Deb will want to read these when she gets home! And, boy are we excited that she WILL be able to read these when she gets home!!! Praise the Lord!!!
Todd

This is John again. I just talked to Todd at 10:00 eastern/9:00 pm central. They are still setting in the waiting room waiting on news. They have not heard anything since aroound 6:30pm EDT. Keep Praying!

Friday, September 10, 2004 6:20 PM CDT

Hello. This is John Myers posting this time. I am not in New York but am in Ohio. Todd called me abot 45 minutes ago and said that after over 4 hours of surgery that the Doctors had just gotten things opened up to where they could get at the tumor. Todd said it would be at least another 3 and a half hours. Keep Praying!

Friday, September 10, 2004 12:42 AM CDT

Today’s the big day!!! PRAY!!!! PRAY like never before! Pray every time you think about it. God is an awesome God, but prayer moves His hand! Pray! I know I sound desperate, but this is urgent! We covet your prayers! We love her so much and we want her to be well. Doctors have told us that chances of getting it all are slim, but with God, all things are possible. So PRAY!!!!!!
It is now three o'clock in the afternoon, and she is STILL not in surgery! So.... who knows what time I'll know something. But as soon as I do, I promise I'll let you know.

Thursday, September 9, 2004 4:03 PM CDT

Debbie is to be at the hospital at 10:30 tomorrow morning. Surgery is to begin at 12:30. These times are eastern standard time. So, for people on God's time (Indiana), that's 9:30 and 11:30.
I've asked Debbie how she is doing as far as nerves. She says she is fine. She did, however, say not to ask her tomorrow!
I know I have said this many times, but please pray, pray, pray! We are trusting and believing that God is going to work a miracle. But we also know that he works through prayer.
Her friend, Jenny Gardner and her family are coming in tonight to be here for the surgery. We are so thankful for the friends that Debbie has. We understand that not everyone can be here, (and trust me, there wouldn't be enough room!) but we know that the ones who can't will be praying. Anyway, she's going to be doing some of the cooking this weekend, and Steve, her husband, has volunteered to take care of Kody. Pray for him!!! Ha!
As soon as we know how the surgery went and we are able to get to this computer, I'll let you know how it went. I'm sure it will be good news!
Please continue to sign the guestbook. And continue to pray. We appreciate it so much!
Todd

Wednesday, September 8, 2004 11:39 AM CDT

We are up here in New York. We arrived at 3:00 this morning, just in time to see Peggy and say "hello - goodbye" at the airport. We so appreciate her coming to see Debbie and to help lift her spirits!
Speaking of Debbie, as you can well imagine, she is in great spirits. Joking around, still more concerned about others than herself. Letting us know where Kody's stuff is for pre-school. He starts Monday.
Her husband, John gave her a Woman's Day magazine a couple of days ago. While looking at it this morning, she noticed that there was a scripture verse in it. I Corinthians 2:5. "Your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." It really blessed her heart!
Debbie's surgery is scheduled for this Friday at twelve or twelve thirty. She can't remember which. We don't know when we are to take her in. It will be at Syracuse University Hospital.
Please continue to pray for her. In fact, pray like never before. This is not going to be an easy surgery. There are so many things at stake here. While we know that it's just enough that she be alive, we hope and pray that all of her faculties be spared. We want to have the Debbie that we all know and love to be "in there" when everything is said and done.
I'll keep posting as I find out more. Please keep posting on here. She just checked it out before I got on here. Also, if you want, send cards of encouragement. Her address is in the first couple of journals.
Thanks so much for you all's support. We need it and appreciate it.
Todd

Tuesday, September 7, 2004 5:59 PM CDT

This will be short. We (her family and I) are getting packed up to go to New York. She met with two doctors today. Just to get their opinions on what is to be done. Seems everyone is in agreement that it needs to go.
We did find out today that surgery may not be until Monday. They are trying to schedule a 12 hour time slot for the surgery. Yeah. That's a long time! So we won't know until tomorrow when it is for sure. They were supposed to let her know today, but.... Seems like they forget how anxious a person can become while waiting on this kind of thing.
Please pray for our nerves! Their's, because of the uncertainty, and mine because I'll be driving with Maxine in the vehicle! Ha!
Seriously, though, we do appreciate all of your prayers. They are truly what are keeping us sane. We have had so many tell us that they are at peace about the situation, and that is so encouraging! So please continue to pray!
Todd

Monday, September 6, 2004 9:24 AM CDT

Another day with not much to report. By the end of this week, there will probably not be enough room to tell what needs to be told! So I'll revel in the calm right now!
Seems like I always start these out with the line "Just talked to Deb", but that's just the case again! I like to check with her and see if there's anything she wants to say.
She has been inundated with phone calls of support. People telling her that they are praying. Telling that their church had special prayer for her. That someone was annointed on her behalf! You can't imagine how knowing that boosts the spirits!
Her friend Peggy Taylor from Tacoma Washington, (soon to be Alaska) flew in yesterday and will be spending a few days with her. If college did nothing else for Debbie (trust me, there is some question whether it really did something for her. chocolate chip cookies anyone?) it provided her with a circle of friends that is unmatched by anyone else! I turn green with envy every time I think of her friends. They have been the most supportive friends that anyone could ask for. I know that Debbie appreciates them and everything they do for her.
Tomorrow we will be leaving for New York. "We" includes her mom and dad as well as her brother Charlie. Maxine insists that I go to be her chauffeur.... Sounds like she doesn't trust Charlie that much in Syracuse! So, I probably won't have the opportunity to write anything tomorrow. Please pray for our safety as we travel. We are taking two vehicles up so Charlie and David can return when they need to. Maxine and I have no clue as to how long we will stay up there. I'm sure there will be many doctor's visits for Debbie, so we plan to be there for her. As many of you know, I have three broken vertabrae that are not healing, so I can't work. So that allows me to be there for her. I don't enjoy having the broken back, but I'm glad I can be there.
Please continue to keep Debbie in your prayers. I'll try to keep you updated on a regular basis. Remember to sign the guestbook. She checks the website alot, so even if you don't know her, it's an encouragement to hear from you! Also, if you feel like writing Debbie or sending a card, her address is in a couple of these journals.

Not much to post today. Talking to Debbie as I type. She's still feeling the same. Surgery has been scheduled for Friday at Syracuse University Hospital. We are still waiting on word from Mayo. But most likely she'll remain at Syracuse. It looks as though another storm is headed to Florida after this current one. Being that is where the Mayo clinic is located would only postpone what needs to be done now.
Prayer is definitely helping. She is in great spirits. Through the past three years, she has maintained such a great attitude, even when things didn't look good. She has been such an inspiration to me and so many others, words can't describe!
She is asking that you pray for her husband. He is really battling depression right now as you can only imagine. So please keep him lifted up.
They annointed her at church this morning, and people are trusting and praying that God will heal her if it be His will.
She says to tell you all thanks for the prayers. We feel very strongly that they alone will make the difference.
Thanks for checking in. I'll keep updating as I find out more info.
Again, if you would like to write her, here is her address.

Talked to Debbie a few minutes ago. Several things to report. It is still undecided as to what hospital she will be going to. John, her husband, is trying to find the best neurosurgeon in the business to do her operation and has spent many, many hours on the phone. He has been there for her every step of the way! Her uncle, Howard Lee, is a cancer specialist at St. Vincents hospital in Indianapolis. He knows a brain surgeon at Mayo in Rochester MN. So he is going to be discussing her case with him and see what his opinion is. If Debbie were to go to Mayo, it would be the one in Florida. Ultimately, the decision is up to Debbie. Wherever she feels the most comfortable at is where she will go.
She told me that she found out that there is a 50/50 chance of keeping her eyesight. She thought the odds were better than that, so that was a little disappointing for her to hear.
My mind is a little foggy right now, so I hope I remembered everything. Oh, yeah. There is something else. If she were to go to Florida to have the surgery, she would need an RV to come back home in. So, if you could keep this in your prayers that someone would feel it put upon their hearts to loan an RV for this purpose, we would appreciate it!
Just remembered another thing. The tumor is very sticky. It is so entwined with her optic nerve and her pituitary gland that it will be very tricky to get out. Please pray that God will make it easy, if it would be His will.
Can't think of anything else at this point. I know my cousin will be checking this web site out, so if you would, please sign the guest book! And PRAY!!!!!!
If you would like to write her, here is her address. I'm sure she would love to hear from you.

It looks at this time that the surgery will be scheduled for next Friday. Although Mayo has been considered and contacted, it looks like Syracuse University hospital is the place to have the surgery. She has had her past two surgeries here and she feels the most comfortable there.
For those who are just finding out about this, I'll give a little background. My cousin found out four years ago that she had a tumor on her pituitary gland. It has most likely been there her whole life. It is a cystic tumor. It is not malignant. In the past, it has been the cysts growing out of the tumor that caused the problems. However, this time it is the tumor itself that is growing. Her optic nerve runs right through this tumor, so they have opted in the past not to remove it. Now, they have no choice. If not removed she will go completely blind. She is already going blind as we speak. Also, she would lose her behavioral skills. So the tumor has to go.
The chances of her keeping her eye sight is rather slim due to the location of her tumor. So please pray that her eye sight will be spared. Also, her pituitary gland will go with the tumor, so she will have to be on medication the rest of her life just to be able to live. Medication is 10,000 dollars a year! So please pray that insurance will take care of this.
I'll try to keep this updated on a regular basis.
