Lieber Stefan,

Alles Liebe

Happy New Year and welcome home to Canada where it is cold.
Here in Southern CAlifornia it is hot and it is not fun.
Fires just started again.

Your Christmas letter is beautiful. I love the name of your new cat....Trouble...
Olivia is sooooo beautiful. Rikki and Stephan you write so beautifully.

I look at you Rikki and I think, Ok....I can do this.
This, meaning....ride the Grand Prix 20 year old half arab who is on loan to me. Training is expensive but I want to try for my life long goal to show upper level dresaage and do well.
I had let go of that goal by the time I met you and little Olivia at that Yard sale so long ago i n PA.
But suddenly there is horse. She is not easy and I am working hard and think....at times....I am toooo old for this dream stuff.

I still love my bed frame!!! and all of the beautiful clothes and everything you gently guided me to try....like curlers:-) I actually use them on occasion.

I hope to ride in an upper level Dressage show with a horse that is on lone to me. Her name is Fancy Treats.
I would love to make the International Qualifier show that includes the Para-equestrians (myself) on 2nd week of March, in Del Mar, CA. I would love to do well.

My body is screaming at me sometimes but I look at your letter from Xmas and think....welllllll I can keep trying.

Miss you and hope to meet Trouble. My Sweet Pea (himmy cat,) turned 8 years old Jan 4th...

Happy Birthday to Olivia. I hope you are all WARM and doing well.
take care

What a wonderful treat to receive your Christmas letter and pictures. We miss you, for you all left such a big hole here. We just had a 20" snowfall and COS was closed yesterday. The concerts were last week so they were spectular as usual. We should be plowed out by Christmas so looking forward to another special day with the Body of Christ. Olivia will have a ball this year, she is growing up. Jeb and Laurie's little Jeannie is 4 and sometimes we think going on 20. This will be a big day for them as well. They have 10 relatives from CA staying 9 days. Wow!

Well, we spent all day wrapped around Livi's fingers at her every beck and call. Of all her presents, she still loves her singing Frosty the snowman. Dinner was amazing with all the trimmings. We're sad the snow has turned to rain, but at least Jon should make his flight tonight.

Everytime I see Rikki, Stefan and Olyvia, my outgoing flight is threatened with snow. (yes, it is Ol-y-via).
What a good time. Stefan and I made a huge snowman, which at the very end my father tried to lay credit to. I am sure the picture is posted here somewhere. Stefan submitted it to the Times (ok, the Seattle Times). Mom frowned when we told her that we captioned it "Former Councilwoman Margaret Pageler's Family Celebrates the Freshly Fallen Snow."

I love this site and check it almost every day. I am have slacked on signing the guest book, but will get better. How fun to think of you cozy in your house, snow outside and frosty the snowman entertaining the fam. Just last night "santa claus is coming to town" entertained my fam. Ok, me. I watched it after the kids went to bed. We are looking so forward to seeing you over new years. Quality time with you is always a wonderful thing. Much love. Shelley

Dear Rikki, Stefan and Olivia Joy,

I was so sad to read your entry concerning Jesse. She was indeed a very special and faithful friend and accompanied you all through good and less good times... I feel your loss and want you to know that I am thinking of you at this sad time. I remember meeting Jesse on a couple of occasions at your home in Chester Springs, she was a wonderful dog, very gentle and friendly and made a great addition to our German coffee get-togethers!
Take comfort in the fact that she is no longer suffering now and is resting peacefully among her other friends in dog heaven (I am sure that there is such a place...)

With tender thoughts,

Helen & family

I had Daphne and Delilah (Mark and Jen's standard poodles) yesterday and drove up to winterize the cabin, and play in the mountains, visiting Wild Horse Wind Farm outside Ellensburg, among other things.

We stopped at Bullfrog Rd. (the Interstate 90 Roslyn - Salmon La Sac exit) where Jesse and Freya would play in the Yakima River on my fishing trips. We would throw sticks over and over again -- life was beautiful on those easy summer days:

In the sun that is young once only,
Time let me play and be
Golden in the mercy of his means,
And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calves
Sang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and cold,
And the sabbath rang slowly
In the pebbles of the holy streams.
( from Dylan Thomas' Fern Hill )

Jenny and I came to this spot to mourn Freya -- I played tunes on my harmonica then. Yesterday I sang Oh My Darling . . . and, before departing, threw one last stick for Jesse. It's still floating down the Yakima, then it will go down the Columbia and out into the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum -- the Ocean of Peace).

Yesterday was the last day for Jesse, the dog.

She has swum many lakes and oceans. She enjoyed Washington, Germany, California, Pennsylvania and Ontario. During our road trip from California to Pennsylvania, she visited Sun City, AZ, Atlanta, GA, Lexington, KY and Ohio. She loved the ocean independent whether it was the Pacific (Olympics, Alki Beach, Cannon Beach, Santa Cruz, Ventura) or the Atlantic (Atlantic City, Outerbanks, Tybee Island). Whenever she saw water, she wanted in. Independent of size or time of the year.

One year we froze her in the Wiesent in Germany. It was below freezing and she would swim in the river and upon getting out her fur would freeze and little icicles would hang of her belly. Neighbors were concerned about her, but she was happy.

We will never forget how she got into the mud on Tybee Island. We drove off the island as dogs were not allowed on the beach and she went into a river full of mud. Rikki had to save her and I had to clean her in the hotel pool. Our car smelled lovely for the rest of our trip.

In Pennsylvania she loved to visit the neighbors, join their pool parties and convince them to get treats for her. Since she had pancreatitis in California (where Jenny and Jason saved her life!) she was on a strict diet. Therefore she loved the visits to the neighbors even more.

Before pancreatitis she was used to eat almost anything she can get. Rumours say she was seen at Drive Thru’s from Mc Donald (supposedly with Grandpa Jack next to her). In Rothenburg in Germany she ate once ice cream. A little boy was walking there next to his parents and kept his cone with ice cream too low. Jesse addressed this issue right away and after that the boy only had an empty cone in his hand.

As we visited Montreal the first time for vacation we had booked a hotel outside the city and had requested ground floor. We arrived around 8 pm in the dark and in the rain and unfortunately had a room on the third floor (as the floor will not be guaranteed when you book a hotel). I had to carry Jesse up metal stairs outside the building to access our room.

Jesse also loved to play in the snow. Cabin time with her cousin Freya was her favorite time. The higher the snow the better. She would chase snow balls and dig holes. This year was already hard on her as her legs rejected to carry her in the snow we had in Oakville.

She was always available to defend our yard and chased squirrels and rabbits out of it.

As she couldn’t get up lately to eat, Olivia would hand feed her. She would take some dry food from her bowl and reach it to Jesse. We are sure Olivia will miss her.

Bagheera also lost a sister. Bagheera had to take over already last year to write the annual Christmas letter as Jesse couldn’t see anymore so well. I was a typical sister relationship. There were times where Jesse would scare Bagheera away or chased her through the house and up the stairs. On the other hand there were days were Bagheera would stretch out on Jesse’s oversized dog bed (a cat can be very long if she wants to) and Jesse had to accept a place on the carpet.

We all will certainly miss her!

Stefan Boehmer
Oakville, ON Canada - Tuesday, October 14, 2008 6:17 AM CDT

This man’s best friend . . . Jesse the Dog.

Jesse was a Dog of great Accomplishments. For one, Jesse was an accomplished Writer. How many of the Boehmer Family’s friends and relations counted on Jesse’s skillful Christmas letters to keep track of the Family through happy times and sad times, moving from one country to another . . . to another. Jesse was a Rock, an anchor in the whirlwinds and storms of life, one who settled the Boehmers down and in, who just wanted to lead a peaceful life at home (no more suitcase packing, please).

I was Jesse’s GrandPa. Jesse and her cousin, Freya (from whom she learned to swim), would accompany me on my fishing trips on rivers in Washington state. They were ever so respectful as I quietly crept up to my fishing holes so as not to spook the trout . . . they would wait and watch me fly casting the river for ever so long (often without luck). But as soon as I gave up on fishing, they sprung to life and dragged sticks to me to throw in the river so they could swim out, against the current, to retrieve them and bring them back to me so I could do it all over again, and again, again.

In the car on the way home they would, from the back seat, lick my ears in gratitude for such a wonderful summer day on the river. A rumor made its way through the family that I would stop at MacDonald’s and order a plain hamburger each for the granddogs, but you know the story, someone start’s a rumor and there’s no stopping it. . .

Jesse gave us a very good life and I and each family member will cherish her memory. Thank you Olivia Joy, Stefan and Rikki for caring for our Dear Jesse from beginning to end. Our hearts are full of that exquisite joy and sorrow that love requires.

GrandPa Jack

Rikki, I never understood before why Ecclesiastes had that line in it about "a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones," but of course, it's about Jesse! I've never known another dog who fetched stones like Jesse. She was never happier than when one of us was casting away stones so that she could chase them down and gather them. Of course, she liked to fetch huge logs, too. Thanks for the wonderful memories.
Love,
Mom

Dear Rikki, Stefan and Olivia Joy,

Thank you for the good words about Jesse.

Thank you for parenting, loving, keeping and caring for my most beautiful Grand Dog.

I'm glad Olivia got to know Jesse and I will try to keep her mindful of Jesse by pictures and stories as she grows up.

Good bye, Sweet Dog Friend. I will miss your knuckle kisses and your rallying expression of joy at seeing me when I came to visit, all too infrequently.

You were my Good Dog. Forget you I cannot ... I will not.

I am so sad. It makes my heart hurt because I know this pain too well. The only thing I can say is let yourself feel all your feelings, she is worth every one of them. I am certain I would not be the person I am today without my best friend Keats and as I held her when she died, all I could say was thank you, thank you, thank you for finding me. Good luck and tons of love during this crappy time.

G'Pa Jack is visiting the Boehmers this week (Meg and Jen and Mom must be soooo jealous). Rikki and Olivia met me at the airport Sunday afternoon; my bags will be delivered (I hope). Stefan is in Germany until Thursday. On the way home from the airport, Olivia and G'Pa ate dried mango and sunflower seeds in the back seat -- after Olivia took only a short time checking me out with her searching eyes that used to plunge me into sadness (but not this time). She ended up feeding me after mouthing the dried mangos. She is quite the eater of all kinds of things, I understand.

Tomorrow we get to take walks and check out the neighborhood together. The back yard is full of birdsong -- it's Spring in Ontario.

Good Job Mommy! What a week. I was busy feeling sorry for my family of 5. A week ago we all had the flu. The puke flu. Everyday someone either barfed or had to come home from school with the aches and barfing the next day. I was the last to get it. I felt like a dark cloud followed me all week then landed right on top of me. But that is over and it sounds mild compared to what you dealt with. I should tell you what I told almost every parent of a small child teething. Teething look and acts just like the flu. Most parents can't figure out why the flu last so long for a one year old. Because most of the time, it is teething. Usually, it is not because of the tooth you can see of feel, but the movement of the "buds" inside the gums. I am a huge fan of the bath. I used it like a reset button. For each kid, it took them out of the present state of mind, and into a new one. Call me anytime, I have tons of little tid bits about kids I gathered over my years working with them. 1-360-920-7526.
Love to all
