Thought I would stop by for a visit. I miss hearing from you guys. I am glad to hear that Sara is doing pretty well. I hope she continues to do well. I have some pictures to share with you of me and my boyfriend. He is really awesome I just know you would love him. The first picture is just him and I and the second picture is him, me, and his dad, who has Lou Gehrig's disease. He is a wonderful man and just amazes me every time I see him. I hope you are doing well and having good days with few seizures. I am sad that they have become a part of your life and I pray that one day Sara will have a seizure free life.

Sorry I missed Sara's birthday...Hope it was a good one. I can't believe how big she is getting. I have a quick question, In your update you said you got a handicapp van. Did you get any assistance for that and if you don't mind me asking how much it was. Kody is getting so darn heavy and we are considering that route.

Alex is flying by to say hello! Hope you all are having a fabulous summer. Great news on the new chair. Those things are always such a huge worry because getting coverage is hit or miss and they just cost so darned much. We are looking at a tricycle for Alex that is $3500! No way will insurance cover it. Anyway, I also wanted to give you a tip on impetego (spelling?). A few years back, my two older kids were getting it over and over again no matter what we did. The doctor finally told us that it likes to live in warm moist areas and lots of people carry it in their NOSE. Once the adults in the household took a q-tip and gently swabbed a little of the topical ointment in their nostrils a couple times, the kids never got it again. Good luck!

Go ahead and complain! You have all the right in the world. It's so hard to sit and wait and feel "powerless". The shear exhaustion Sara is going through is also exhausting you, Jeff and Amy as well. The hardest part to all of this is putting in in God's hands. I pray for Dr Katz all the time. That God will enlighten him. I know that God is working through him in more ways than he "Neuroman" realizes. We're right there with you.

You are so right. The smallest milestones to others are huge to us. Yes do take Sara Easter egg hunting and don't forget the camera. She seems to enjoy the eggs in the pictures. Im sure Amy would love to help her if shes not to busy trying to get all of the eggs herself. Molly has lost much more of her awareness since last year so I am so glad and thankful to my mom for demanding I take her last year. Sara is just precious and I think of you guys often.

Your post brought tears to my eyes. Alex's baby book is put away somewhere for that very reason. I don't know what to say except that we started keeping track of other things, smiles and giggles and hugs. I did not put the book away because I am in denial, but because I wanted to concentrate on WHO is important, not what some book said Alex should be doing. There are so many things to be happy for, each breath for many of us with sick kiddos. I do not mean to sound preachy. Grieving the loss of our expectations is natural and healthy. I only want you to know that you are not alone. This road we are on is a long, hard walk . . . made better with friends.

My heart goes out to you mothers with not having the "FIRST". It must be so hard. I know Angela has nothing compared to your all's children and it kills me to see her not having her normal teen years. She can not work or ever drive. Because of her illiness she has lost so many of her so called friends because they have went on with out her. I worry about the furture for her and her furture husband. I feel silly that I worry about these things when I read what you all go through. But she is my daughter and we all want the best for our children. You all are in our prayers.

"Firsts" - There is no true meaning for that word when it comes to our "amazing gifts", our daughters. There firsts are not the same as the other kids or any other kids. But on your "block" you are the first to show compassion and an uncanny sense of what is truely important. An unconditional love that reaches far beyond the depths of your soul. I know because I have seen it up close. I have watched you hold Sara and hugs Amy and kiss Jeff goodbye when you had your "shift" change. And I must agree with the entry prior to this...when those firsts do come they are well worth the wait because of the strength and determination it took.
So.....it's ok. You are an amazing mother and friend and I value your "sisterhood". You are among an elite group of parents with whom I could only have a converstion about how much "seizures suck" and you'd get it.
How many parents at the PTA could really get involved in that type of converstion? Not many! (The terminology is over their heads) Yes, we are part of an elite group and so are our children. Barbara, it still gets me down on some days and other days are better. It hurts sometimes to watch other children so much further along than Mary. But God didn't give me other children and is it fair to compare. She's unique as Sara is. As our families are. It's a struggle but know that I am praying for you for strength. Love you

Oh, my dear Aicardi sister, Barbara...As I read your update tonight, I almost felt like I was ready my own journal on Riley's page. That feeling that comes when we look at what should be a cute little book with all the wonderful reminders of our childs early years. All of the "firsts" are supposed to be the wonderful, exciting little things that we go back and read about and giggle about years from now. You and I have too many "blanks". It isn't fair. There just isn't a space to fill out things like: First successful seizure drug, first surgery, first pair of AFO's, baby's first stander, and so on. We have been robbed of those firsts and so have our daughters. I hate to try to make it all better with some words because I know that it doesn't really work that way. BUT, (I have learned to hate that word), our girls have their own set of firsts but unfortunately they haven't made a book yet that celebrates their firsts - and their firsts truly need to be celebrated because our girls have to work so much darn harder at them all! Riley didn't smile for a year, and her "first" smile after 12 long months should be written in a book, announced on the Late Show, written on a bill board in time square, and I should have tatooed it on my arm for all to see! LOL

I completely understand how you feel and my heart skipped a few beats when I read your journal tonight. Please just remember that you are not alone..not by a long shot. I am so happy that you and Sara and me and Riley have crossed paths.

I definitely celebrate you and your daughter right along with you. And remember that I am always here...walking along side you through this journey...

Hi there! Just stopping by to check in and see how things are going! We have been doing alright. Riley has been very fussy while she is eating so we are having another barium/upper GI test done next week. I feel so bad because every time that she would eat, she would cry for like two hours! We have seen a few different doctors a bunch of times and so far the only things that has helped is that we have slowed her feeding down by half. SO we will see what comes of the test next week. I just hate seeing my little princess so uncomfortable.

Anyways, I hope that everything is going good with you all! We will continue to keep checking in on the web site to see hwo things are going!

Well, hearing of all the doctors appointments I am tired. LOL. It really seems like you all are getting the ball rolling with her health. WOW what great news that you all get to go to Disney World. I have been five times and Angela has been twice. Of course this last time she had to use her wheelchair. They are so great with anybody that is in a wheelchair no matter what their age is. I am glad you all are picking a cooler time. The bad thing is when we were down there when Angela was in her wheelchair it was so hot and of course it was so crowded. I hate it when it was like that. I am so excited that you will be going to Disney. We used to live in Orlando and really enjoyed our time down there. January is a great time to go! It is never worth going when it is 100 degrees outside and the lines are two hours long. I always used to feel so bad for families that did that! All the kids ever watned to do was go back to the hotel and go in the pool!

Anyways, I really do feel for you when you talk about taking Sara off of the Depakote and then seeing an increase in seizures! The you never know if the depakote was working or if the break through seizures are some form or withdrawal (or the weather, or teething, or constipations, or or or or- I could go on forever). Riley has only been on a few different medications and we have found decent control with her vigab and vitamin B-6 (I really think the B-6 was a great addition for Riley), but it drives me crazy that we never truly know what is working an not working, and we just have to go with our gut feeling and listen to the doctors and then take that information to the other parents (like from the Aicardi listserv) and then take all that information and sit down as a family and figure out what we feel is the best decision. I pray every day that I am doing what is best for Riley and I have to tell you that I can see what a great mother you are by how healthy, beautiful, and how well Sara is doing.

I am so glad that we have "met" in our cyber space family! I keep you all in our prayers and continue to keep checking in to hear all the wonderful things that are going on with you all!

DISNEY!!!! HOW AWESOME!!!

Alec did wonderful on his trip. January was an awesome time for him to go because of his overheating/autonomic issues he has when it gets warm out. For us the weather was in the 70s the entire week.

Alec was able to go on more rides than we actually thought. For some of the rides we held him, some he sat next to us, and for a couple he sat is his own seat because it was tilted enough for him. Probably our all time favorite ride was at Magic Kingdom, the Buzz Lightyear ride. This ride actually has a wheelchair cart so Aaron and Alec were able to ride together. It was cool. We did a lot of the "little kid" rides and didn't do much for the fun older stuff. It was too hard to have one of us go on the ride and the other to stay with the boys. But, there was so much to look at and so much to see I wish we could have had another week in FL!

Hi Barbara,
I am so excited that Sara got her wish and you all get to go to Disney! If you have any questions about Give Kids the World or the Disney trip, feel free to ask. You know we just went in November on Kody's trip. Me, my husband,(we paid for ourselves), Kody, Kassi, Kim (Kody's mom) and Chad (Kody's dad) went. We did choose to fly and it wasn't as bad as you think but I understand your concern.

Also Kody got a new stroller recently if you have questions about that (which is crash tested and has tiedowns since he is transported to school in it).

I am so sorry about all the problems you have been having lately. You will love Disney...it is such a nice experience for the whole family and the whole family deserves it since you all make sacrifices everyday.

I wanted to come by, read Sara's story and say hello after I saw your email on the Eli's Angels forum.
I am very interested in keeping in touch. Seems we might have gone through some of the very same things, and some not so much the same. It never hurts to gain perspective, and it never hurts to have more friends!
Also - I read that you shared your story with your church. I have done the same - in somewhat of a different way though. I decided in October that I wanted to help my church start up a special needs children's ministry. When we presented the idea to our church, and showed them a slideshow on the two children at the church with special needs, there was a HUGE response. (My daughter was one of the two). God is good, and yes, you are right, he has a plan for us!

You are right- what is a diagnosis? I remember when we received ours for Mito and someone said, well the difference is "now you have a name for your monster." How true. It is a monster- just like aicardi. I'm just sorry. For me, I think it helped to have a name- I would rather know than not know. You both are amazing parents and have given Sara everything she could ever need. I know it had to make you feel good with Dr. Katz told you that everything had been done right. No second guessing, no regrets.

I hope the Lamictal does help Sara. Morgan took it for a long time and it was the one that helped the most.

I am thinking about you daily and praying for strength and for you to feel God's grace. Grace is an amazing gift from God and will get you through each moment.

Hey Sara and Barbara! Just wanted you to know that I was thinking about you, especially since you just got Sara's diagnosis. I know it is hard, and that you really just don't know how to feel right now, but you are all going to make it through this. It is really good that Sara's treatment and care thus far is what they would have recommended anyways. Always remember, like I have said before, a diagnosis or prognosis will never change your sweet daughter. Sara is always going to be your precious princess - no matter what. As Anne J., one of the other Mito moms, says "A diagnosis is simply an explanation - it is not a verdict." It helps me a lot to remember that. I hope that you can get more information about Sara's syndrome and maybe talk to some more families who have the same disorder. It definitely helps to have the support of those who have been there!!!

I also wanted to thank you for all of the encouragement and support that you have given us!!! You are always so thoughtful and kind. Taylor gave us quite a scare after Christmas, but we are certainly rejoicing now! I appreciate your support so much! Taylor sends her love to Miss Sara, too!!! Hope you all have a great weekend!

I meant to come by yesterday and wish you a Merry Christmas- well, meant to come by on the 25th- it is now the wee hours of the 27th... but you know what I mean!

I hope Amy and Sara are feeling better- no fun to be sick at Christmas. I know how rough Omnicef is on the tummy- I remember it doing that to Morgan. :(

I wanted to say thank you so much for your kind words about Morgan and our family. We are very very sad. Christmas Eve was my most difficult day yet.

Also- I wanted to email you but haven't had a chance... make sure if they do a muscle biopsy on Sara that it is a fresh piece and will not be frozen. Shoffner says the only GOOD and RELIABLE biopsies are those that are fresh. I know that sounds gross, but he knows his stuff. He is very partial to his lab- he controls the environment there.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! It sounds like you have had alot on your mind lately, and I can see why! When Tabby was going to get tested for Mito, we were very nervous about it too! I guss God gave us her dx just in time, because if it hadn't been for a new test her genetic doctor wnted to try-we would've went ahead and done the Mito testing and it would have been all for nothing! It is good peace of ming to know what is or what is not going on with your child! I wish you guys the best!

Hi... I saw your post in Elena's guestbook and I wanted to say hi and let you know there are a lot of moms out there who support you. I know the Mito testing question is not an easy one. We were on the fence for 9 months before we decided to move forward with it. Did I tell you Morgan was "diagnosed" with cortical dysplasia and intractable seizures before her testing? I can't remember if we have ever discussed that.

Sara is just precious and I love seeing her pictures. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. It is much cooler here now, and we plan on spending a relaxing weekend at home.

Barbara & Sara-
You are so GOOD to always check on us- thank you. I am just getting caught up on your entry- you know- we had the SAME problem with early breast tissue. Morgan is now off the Keppra and one breast area is normal, but the other one isn't- hmmm. I DO believe it is the Keppra! Morgan had all the testing from endocrine and so far, everything is normal. I have been told neuro impairments can cause this- ugh. I didn't know you were thinking of Mito testing- I know it is scary- believe me! Morgan was almost 2 before we tested her. Please feel free to email me with any questions. I will say, for us, the diagnosis wasn't earth shattering- Morgan's suffering now had a name to go with it- MITOCHONDRIAL. But all in all, nothing really changed- except we did join the UMDF in Atlanta and it is one amazing support group for our family. And I guess for me, I had more of a peace in knowing an answer as to what caused her seizures, etc... I support you in WHATEVER you decide to do- it is a personal decision. Testing is invasive and I understand your fear.

Please know I am here for you- I am so happy that Sara only needed Diastat twice in one month! Great news.

Hey Sara and Barbara! I'm glad that you got good news about Sara's scoliosis. I'm also happy to hear that her seizures have decreased - that's awesome!

Barbara, I know the fear that you are experiencing about the Mitochondrial Testing. It has been exactly a year since we received Taylor's diagnosis of Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy. For me, it was bittersweet. We were glad to FINALLY have a specific diagnosis, but sad to have one without a good prognosis. You always hope and pray that your child will have a disease that is treatable and better yet cureable, and it is quite a blow to find out that she has a disease that is not. However, the UNKNOWN is the worse to me!!! At least with the diagnosis, you know what is good for her and what to avoid. You also can learn more about what has caused her medical and developmental issues, and gain the support of others who are struggling with the same disease and effects. I can also tell you, from our trip to the last Mitochondrial conference - there are many researchers and doctors passionately searching for better treatments and cures for this disease!!! I completely understand you being scared, but just remember that no matter what happens - no matter what diagnosis they find for Sara's condition -- IT WILL NEVER CHANGE HER - SHE WILL ALWAYS BE THE SAME SARA (TODAY, TOMORROW, AND ALWAYS!!!) So don't let a label or a medical term make you lose sight of that precious fact!!! Sara is a beautiful child of God. She was created just as He intended, and we are all blessed to know her!!! And just like Taylor, I believe the wonderful impact that she has made on the lives of others, just wouldn't as great if she was just like everyone else! She is so special and precious! I appreciate you sharing her and your family's life with us!!! Through our sweet daughters, we have met so many wonderful, caring people - haven't we!?! Thanks for the hugs through the wires! I'm copying the sorority of mothers because even though a "Trip to Holland" is nice the other one speaks of the whole reality. I really needed to read that yesterday again. Mary is doing well. We also have a visit with Katz next week. On wednesday. We see him at 11am and Laban at 1pm. Vns check. Ken and I both cried to read about Sara saying, "momma". What joy for both you and Amy. I remember the first time Mary said it and actually called for me. It was the night in the PICU at the "hotel" after the VNS was put in. One of the nurses came and woke me and said Mary is calling for you. I was in disbelief. And asked what did she say, "she's calling MOM!" I walked into the room and she was crying, "MOM". I began to cry also. I turn to the nurse and then told her it was the first time she ever said that.

Hi Everyone,
I like all your new pics! I also have to say I hate seizures!!!! I have my own ideas about botox...Kody had it twice. If you want to talk email me. Glad that Sara likes horseback riding. I just think it is so good for them not only physically but mentally. I can't put into words how it excites Kody. All you have to do in mention Spanky. We can't take a picture because they won't let us since Kody's riding is in a big barn and they are afraid the camera will flash and spook the horses but we will get a picture one of these days. He only rides till the end of Oct. We have to start emailing eachother to keep up with things.

Wow-sometimes it amazes me how much Sara reminds me of Tabitha!
I hope the seizures get better-Tabby does the same kind of clusters....at certain times of the day. She'll have a pattern for a few weeks, then it changes.

Glad to see everything is stable right now. Kody has had his horseback riding cancelled a couple times for heat. He still LOVES it!!!!! He has went through phases of getting up in the wee hours of the morning at times but it seems like it is always a phase and it passes. Hopefully Sara's is a phase also and will pass. I know you have to be tired!

Kody started school on Monday and cried when he got on the but the first day (it was sooo sad) but is also passed quickly and now he loves it. He loves being back at school too. I will come back and check soon. Hope you enjoy some peaceful days.

Hey Sara and Barbara! I LOVE THE SHIRT!!! I am a HUGE BON JOVI FAN!!! Something else, you and I have in common, Barbara!!! Bon Jovi & Cinderella was the 1st concert that I ever went to, when I was 16 - probably around the same year as you (but I won't tell what year either!). My husband likes them, too! I'm glad that you had fun - you really need nights out like that! I'm also glad to hear that Sara is doing so well!!! I hope her Botox does well for her! I have heard so many success stories from Botox in children like ours. Taylor's injections were in her spine, and it was a really low dose, so it just didn't work as good as it would in a limb - I think. We still have the option of trying a higher dose, but after the successful bachlofen trial - we will probably pursue the pump instead! Who knows - we will meet with the neurosurgeon next Weds. to discuss the feasibility of getting the pump. Thanks for mentioning and remembering us! You are always so sweet and thoughtful!!! Well, we hope that you HAVE A NICE DAY too!!! :0)

I can't believe it's been since February that I've signed

I am so sorry that Sara is having a tough time lately. I hope that gastro is able to give you some answers. I understand your frustration in people asking you what is wrong with her when she gets upset. Most of the time I know what is going on with Makily but sometimes I have no idea and it's just another reminder to me that my sweet girl can't tell me which breaks my heart. It must be so frustrating to not be able to communicate what is wrong.
I will be praying for you and Sara. Makily has erratic sleep patterns and I know what they can do to you as her mom. Sleep deprivation can really mess with your head.

hey sweet girl! I like the AMAZING GRACE- definitely one of my favorites for sure! I think it could be my theme song. I'm happy to read your seizures have been a lot better- that is good news. Sorry about the maalox, tummy issues... Barbara- it's interesting b/c we've had the same thing going on! Morgan has been getting Maalox for possible gastritis. But then the poops got REALLY bad- and we suspected a virus. She was SUPER fussy but is now great.. who knows! We have been giving Morgan Melatonin too- it was recommended by some other mommies... it really helps her sleep.

I hope your allergies get better- I hear you! We have been battling them for a while now too. It's TOUGH.

I swear if the ignorant people on the other end of the phone had to come and carry your child around for one day they would be throwing money at you! Oh how I know the pain of having to justify why your child needs this or that to someone. What they dont' realize is how heartbreaking it is for us to say things like "most 2 years olds are walking, talking, running, playing". LIke we need any reminders of that? I totally understand. As soon as I read what she said to you my blood boiled too.....HUGS! We are still fighting for a stander AND kidcart for Makily.....they wanted to give me a "standard wheelchair"...what the heck am I supposed to do with that? Don't get me started.....okay stopping now! LOL

I am hoping you get as much help as you possibly can as I know how hard it is with a special needs child. I will be praying that Sara's seizures will stay under control.

Hey Sara and Barbara! So sorry that I haven't signed in a while, but I have been checking on you. I can't thank you enough for your sweet comments in Taylor's guestbook! You are so kind and supportive. I'm so glad that Sara's seizures are little better! (I kind of wish that we could use phenobarb again, but it's out of the question with her liver enzymes.) Sounds like ya'll had a great time at the Abilities Expo. I know the bath chair will help you a lot! I know what you mean about the emotions tied to getting a converted van, but I am so glad you were able to get one and it will help you everyday! You've got to do all that you can to save your poor back and arms! We bought a van last year, and are trying to get it converted this year. Well, I am excited for you! I know you wish that you didn't need it, but at least it will make things easier for you and Sara. I don't have any suggestions for the glasses problem. Hopefully, you will find a solution for that also. Sara is so sweet - I love all the pictures! She reminds me so much of Taylor - I think you have said that before also. Your entry is beautiful. I hear you loud and clear- I just kept thinking AMEN as I read your entry- :) I know you love hearing Sara and her little noises and seeing those big stretches- we love those very same things with Morgan!

We went to church today and it felt great to go! We were limiting it with the flu season and Morgan but now I think it is good to go. It is also really hard for me- we have been taking Morgan to the infant nursery for almost 2 years now- I see other kids who “graduate” on to the crawlers, walkers, toddlers, etc… It’s hard. I composed myself and we walked into the sanctuary- we were 5 minutes late… They were singing the song “Our God is an Awesome God” – and yes I DO believe this- it is such a test of faith with a sick child- isn’t it? While walking from the parking deck into the church, Morgan had 3 seizures- then I broke down in the nursery in tears because I was so sad to still walk to the infant nursery. Then we walked into the sanctuary and I thought- now wow, this is a TEST of faith. Singing how great God is yet just seeing our daughter seize, etc… I would definitely say this is walking by faith! God doesn't care if our house is big or small- just wants us to love Him.

Your words touched me when you said "there will be other vacations but there will never be another Amy". If only all parents felt this way about their children, the world would surely be a better place! I am glad Amy is home though and on the mend.

I am so sorry Sara's seizures are so bad right now. It must be hard on you to watch her struggle with that...and I am sure it's no walk in the park for her to experience them either. Hopefully her doctor will be back from vacation soon and will be able to get her meds adjusted to help her.
As for the stander I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND! I have been fighting with my insurance company on this since JANUARY. Makily DESPARATELY needs one and I am almost at a loss of what else to do. Sometimes I really want to smack our insurance company.

What a pretty little girl. I saw the mitten and wasnt sure what it was for, glad you explained! Makily wore mitten for 3 months straight to keep her from pulling out her NJ tube......she still managed to get it out 4 times, our kids sure do find a way around things don't they.
We are also fighting to get Makily a stander and it's been such a pain in my butt. Hoping you get yours soon.

Yeah! So proud of you and your eye is focusing!!! Awesome! Morgan goes to the eye doctor tomorrow!! Sometimes she "crosses" her eyes when she really tries to look at something.

And- awesome news on the GI appt and NEW formula! yeah! I have heard the fiber in the pediasure is great stuff and will really help Sara. Our insurance now pays too- it is nice- just shows up at our door via UPS! We were paying over $400/month on the Keto-diet- but now she is on Nutren, Jr. Your insurance SHOULD have been paying all along!

Praying for Amy this week too.

I'm really proud of you all and giving thanks to the Lord for all the great things He is providing.

We will be taking Caitlin to the hospital next month for another mri and 48-72 hour EEG to find out what is going on with her brain, as they think she is having more seizure activity too. So much about her reminds me of our Elena. I came across your site somehow or other. I read a bit about your sweet little girl and her seizures. I know first hand how scary and sad it is. My grandaughter started having them at age 5 months. I have found that it isn't like having a ear infection, you take medicine and get better right away. I think the medical proffesion really doesn't understand the brain as much as we would like them to. Your daughter is beautiful and I can see what a joy she is in your family. My grandaughter is very special too. I hope your daughter can continue to progress and live a healthy life. I don't understand why children have to suffer. God only knows and has a plan for everyone. Hi,
Wanted to say Hello and that I am thinking of you. Kody had the functional hemi so I understood what you were talking about....(scary isnt' it). Sounds like Sara is doing well in many areas and YIPPEEE about her sitting. I know it only takes the small things to make your heart feel so good! She looks adorable in her glasses too. Kody can't see to much at all out of his right eye and without his glasses he just doesn't focus on anything at all. They are soooo much alike!

Hi Sara. I love checking in on you and sounds like a really informative doctor's appointment. That was a great question about the Benedryl causing seizures. I have never thought about it- my daughter is on the Keto diet so I'm more worried about the sugars in it than the actual drug itself. I hope the Clonidine does work and Sara can get some great SOLID nights of sleep- for all of you! I would love to talk with you some time about the VNS. We might be looking into that this summer. Morgan will be 2 in May. A hemispherectomy is not an option- Morgan's seizures are multi-focal. I do have another friend and her daughter has the VNS and she said it has helped some. I know we will take a little relief wherever we can get it!

Hey Sara and Family! I'm glad you had a good dr's visit and that you got good news about the benadryl. I didn't know about how it affects different kinds of seizures. Taylor is on Clonidine for her high blood pressure and it definitely makes her sleepy, but it doesn't last very long for her. I hope it works well for you! Sounds like ya'll need some much needed sleep!!! I know that you are just loving those smiles!!! That's awesome!!! I understand how great it is that she is putting her hands in her mouth, too! Hi! I saw your link in Taylor's guestbook and came to read all about Sara and say hello. I think you signed our guestbook a while back- I'm sorry- I can't remember! Sara is so precious and yes, she has stolen my heart! Just like my little girl Morgan. Morgan and Sara are very similar. I too love to watch my little angel sleep- it is nice to see them so peaceful.

Hey Sara and Barbara! I think this is my first time to sign your guestbook. Thanks for all the sweet words of encouragement that you leave us in Taylor's guestbook. I was looking at Sara's pictures and she reminds me a lot of Taylor! She sure is a pretty little girl! You can tell that she is very loved!!!

You had asked about Taylor's muscle relaxer. She is on Zanaflex (or the generic name is tizanidine). It works pretty good. It does make her a little sleepy, which is a good thing at night. We also give her melatonin; however, we don't think that it is working very well now. She was up a lot last night - not sure if it is seizures or some other pain. We have a consultation for a sleep study at the end of February -- I wish it was sooner, but you know how that goes! I was really surprised when you wrote that your neurologist recommended benadryl for Sara to sleep. I have read a lot about benadryl causing seizures, or lowering the seizure threshold, and that they don't recommend it for someone with seizures. I found out about it on the Yahoo Mito Message Board, because many kids with mitochondrial disorders have sleep problems, and there was a lot of discussion over the pros and cons of using benadryl vs. melatonin or other sleep aids, because of the danger of increased seizures with benadryl-many neurologists do not recommend using it for sleep. I don't know if you have ever heard that, but I thought you might want to look into! You know your child, and how things affect her, so if it is working for her and not causing more seizures, then I'm sure it is okay for her. I just wanted to tell you what I had heard.

Well, I better go for now, but I am definitely going to put Sara's site on my list of favorites and check-in regularly. I'm so glad that she is recovering from her surgery so well! That is awesome!!! She is one tough little girl! She is very lucky to have a wonderful mother like you!!! Hope you all have a great day! Taylor sends big hugs and kisses!!!

When Kody had his tonsils and adnoids out we had a terrible time!!! He was in the hospital for 10 days and came home on a NG tube for 10 more. Nothing is ever easy or comes as planned it seems. Wow, I read Sara's story and I feel like I am reading Aleia's. Sara, you are beautiful and it sounds like your Mom really worries about you when you have seizures.

I know that feeling all too well. The story about freaking out in the dressing room reminds me of many stories I could tell. You just sort of panic and think, "Why now? Why here? Now what do I do?"

Aleia had her VNS placed in April 2005. She typically has GTC seizures so we don't see as much improvement with seizure control, what we do notice is how quickly she recovers after a seizure. It used to take hours, now sometimes she is up and walking within 15 minutes. Gotta love the VNS. After I read that Sara has the VNS I noticed she has the same scar on her neck as Aleia. How does the scar on her chest look. Aleia's was really large and purple, so I bought this scar cream, now it is getting lighter.

Anyway, we will pray for you dear Sara that you will have complete seizure control.

Barbara,

Thank you for sharing your heart so transparently. I ache for you! This may not be helpful right now, but I would highly recommend the book "Holding on to Hope" by Nancy Guthrie. It's a short, easy read about finding the heart of God in suffering/pain. It can be really hard to see His goodness and love for us when our circumstances scream the contrary. That doesn't make it any less true though, and it's refreshing to be reminded of such as in this book. Still, I am sorry that it's so stinking hard right now. Lifing you all up in prayer, your hurting heart, Sara's health/VNS, your hopefully refreshing vacation and more!

Hi guys I know what you are going through. Jan is 100% correct. I you have any questions don't hesitate to call me. 609-242-8173. NJ has a lot of things and with the education laws there is a lot more power you have than they may lead you to believe. Stacey wrote a letter to Lacey Township to specify everything we need. Mary has her own nurse provided by the town. She drives to my house and gets on the bus with her and is with her all day (2 & 1/4 hours) and brings her right back home on the bus. Door to door.
Also with the VNS Dr Katz can't tell you because of the HIPPA Laws but you remember Mary has one. Ask him! HOw much better Mary is. My thougt was if it didn't work it could always be removed. Dr Fried did the surgery.

Hey, I read your entries regularly, but have not left you a message for a while. You are stepping in to very familiar territory that I have been through with two of my children for many years. Keep in mind that you are an equal member of the team when decisions are made with the school. THEY do NOT make the decisions, the TEAM does! You are a vital part of that team and have a right to bring anyone of your choosing to the meeting. There are advocates out there who will come with you and support/coach you. There are other parents in the district who have been through the process and although their child's needs may be different you can support and learn from one another. I sit on both sides of the table (and have for more than 15 years). Stick to your guns! Be polite and nice, but in the school system the "squeaky wheel most certainly gets the grease". Don't be afraid to learn your rights and pursue them if you do not agree with what's happening. Believe me the schools want to save money, but they also largely want to do what is right. Sometimes they need prodding and lots of guidance to see what is right. Go visit the proposed schools. Ask questions. Learn the system and then you will be better prepared to fight it if necessary. My experience tells me that you need to go to each meeting armed and ready, but remain calm and nice as long as possible. Do not sign or agree to anything if it is not what you beieive is the right thing. Also, try to have an open mind. There are some excellent teachers/therapists out there who will bend over backwards to help you and Sara. Sometimes in the end you can do better in a local program than in a larger one that is farther from home. For one thing you are closer and can be more involved. It is very difficult to make these decisions. You have been her primary caregiver through thick and thin and are rightly very protective of Sara. And one last thing, these decisions are not set in stone. Change is always possible. Sometimes you have to try one approach to determine that a different one is more appropriate. Believe me when I tell you that the parent holds the trump card in these meetings. An active, informed, and involved parent earns the respect and admiration of those in the school and will get what is needed to maximize the child's success. Hang in there! There are many websites and advocacy groups out there to help. I'm happy to provide specific info if you want it. Lots of hugs, Jan

Hi, I've come from Oregon to see how Sara is doing, and to spend some time praying for your family. Thank you for your dynamic testimony and faith. My daughter RachelJoy, struggled with severe seizures (along with many other medical issues) for many years. Almost 2 years ago, she was put on oxygen for cardio pulmonary issues, and her seizures stopped!! Turns out that all those fancy medication trials that she had endured, were not going to help her. She was having hypoxic seizures. It truly is God's grace that she is even alive.

I haven't written in a while, but I've been checking. It's good to hear about Sara's smiles. I hope they make it all worth it. Good luck on getting a new dog! Dogs are the most loyal, loving creatures God created. My husband and I have two border collie mixes, and they are so precious. My heart would weep if something happened to either of them, but I have treasured them so much thus far that the sadness would be worth the joy. Also congrats on getting back into Curves. I don't do it myself, but I have heard wonderful things about it. You certainly need that time to care for yourself and be around other women. Go for it!

There's something about this time of year that makes everyone get the sniffles and coughs. I and people in my office have been struggling with it for several weeks now. On the other hand, I'm looking out my big window (it takes up the whole wall!) and seeing the splashes of color already evident on the leaves. Red, gold, orange. It's really beautiful. The air feels cooler today too. I'm thankful for that. It's wonderful to hear about Sara's acrobatics! Rolling over is a huge step for her, I know. Praise God! You go right on a vent! I remember being at a moms group with the speaker talking about what should be in your first aid kits in your cars. I had to laugh. Diastat and oxygen I had, but Band-Aids?!?!

How quickly even we forget. There was a time not too long ago when our "normal" included diastat administration in WalMart, the airport, at Sunday School parties, at church, at friends' houses, ... I can't remember if we ever gave it on a paint isle, but I wouldn't be surprised! We wondered what the people viewing the surveillance cameras must have thought. :o) It certainly is draining to always be on "high alert". A lazy day has a whole different definition! We went on for seven months of only slightly better seizure control with Lydia after her surgery. The good news is that we eventually found a med combo that worked! They thought they had removed Lydia's "focal point", but it ended up just being the point with the lowEST seizure threshold. We've never regretted the surgery, and think that it helped get us to where we are--to a different kind of hectic that more closely resembles the life we dreamed of for our family.

There's still so much to learn about the brain. I'm grateful for what they can do now, but hope for a wealth of understanding still to come. I wish I could baby-sit for you! I'm sorry. "It's hard" is such an understatement.

Hi Barbara. I appreciate your heartfelt entry. I don't think you need to apologize for expressing your frustration. I truly can't imagine being in your situation. You're right--those with healthy kids are blessed. You know that you are blessed, too, but you're asked to bear a load that's heavier than what most people carry. It doesn't make sense, it isn't fair, and there are no clear answers. I found out two days ago that the daughter of a young woman who was my teaching assistant during my freshman year at Mercer had a cancerous brain tumor removed on her first birthday just a few weeks ago. She now faces chemotherapy. Her name is Catie. Then there are dear Sara, Lydia, Amelia, Joshua, Stefanie, Chris, Jay, Connor, Raef, Brandon, and so many precious others who must suffer, not to mention their parents. It stinks! You're right when you say those who don't endure these things can't possibly understand what it's like. Please forgive us when we say things that seem so insensitive. Sometimes we just don't know how to handle it. I wish we did. Hang in there, and know that your friend in Georgia is thinking of you and praying for you. And use this site to vent whenever you want!

I whole heartedly know about the whole, "oh it's just seizures". It makes me CRAZY! The awareness is so not there I keep giving Dr Katz things to say at his talk he's giving to our school system in October. The ignorance is unbelievable. As for the dinner. What a wonderful thing. Our church had a dinner for Mary back in March. Well over 300 people attended and they ran out of sauce. The overwhelming response was short of a miracle. I look at it that way because the energy that filled the room was so powerful. God's presence was unmistakable there.

I'm always thinking of you and yes I do know what you mean about good days and bad days. Sometimes consentrating on the good can get you through the tough periods a little bit better. We'll be praying for answers for the UTI.

We are so very sorry to hear that Sara is having a rough time of it. We certainly hope the doctors can get to the bottom of her UTI issues and get them under control. I know we have dealt with multiple health issues with Stefanie for years and at times it seems everything acts up and it's hard to get a handle on what is causing what. It's ok to feel angry and frustrated right now. We keep Sara and your family in our prayers. I know that you all must be very tired. We pray that the answers will come very soon and treatments will help her feel better so that she can get stronger and you can get some much needed rest. You really need some boring time in your life!!

I'm sorry Sara's having such a hard time. I'm taking in a urine sample for Lydia just this morning. At least Lydia is not seizing, just quite unhappy. We never thought that Lydia's health would reach this point of stability, but it has. It took a long time though, even MONTHS after neurosurgery. Of course only God knows what's in store for your precious one, but He'll provide and hold you close every step of the way! Hang in there and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers this morning!

Isn't it amazing how those once taken for granted trips now mean so much more because you were all together as a family.

Hi! My name is Kelley and I'm a 25-year-old from Macon GA. I began linking to Caring Bridge sites after reading about Mallory Moss in our local newspaper a couple of years ago. The links multiplied, and now I read about and regularly pray for Mallory, Josh, Lydia, Amelia, Brandon, Connor, Raef, Stefanie, Chris, and Mary. Some of these have mentioned your little Sara a few times, and it's nice to have specific prayers now that you have a page. I can't imagine what you endure daily. Everything I read on these sites seems so terribly unfair. I've been a Christian since I was a child, but I still struggle to understand why God allows some things to happen, especially to these precious little ones. Even so, faith holds somehow.
