I check on all of you often but don't always sign the guestbook. I continue to admire the strength and support you have in one another and community. I was saddened to hear that Lucas was on hospice but can see the advantage in some of the care he is able to get without the burden of travel. It is hard to believe it's been 10 years since we were in Minnesota going through transplant. What a fight it is without ceasing. Nathan would be 26 now and and within a few short months be gone 10 years. I can still see Lucas when we first met, such a sweet and beautiful little boy. The path with MLD is one I still don't understand. So much pain and loss involved but at the same time enriching in a ways one would never expect. My heart and thoughts are with you. Happy late 18th Birthday to Lucas. Happy Anniversary to the both of you and it seems Abby is growing into someone pretty special.

Please tell Abby that Madison still talks about her a lot - wish they could hang out because I know they would be a great support for each other. I think Katherine nailed it. You are such an encouragement to those of us in the trenches of MLD with you.
Sam got very discouraged the other day. I got up to get a piece to his leg braces and he said "Mom, it's not fair that you can get up and go where you want without assistance." I sat back down and with tears in my eyes told him "No son it is incredibly not fair. But do you know that boy with MLD who I told you loves Pokemon?" And I was able to share Lucas' story with Sam. That has helped Sam so much do deal with things and for that simple fact I am thankful......
As a side note, ever since the very first time I told Sam about another kid with MLD who LOVES Pokemon Sam has that show setup on autorecord and watches every single stinkin' episode. I always smile and think of Lucas when I walk by and see it on....

Sixteen!!!! What a blessing to have you still here with us, Lucas, gracing our world with your laughter and good attitude, despite all you've been through. Sometimes, those who are well think those who fight for life are better off sedated, as my husband witnessed many times as a medical social worker. You prove what my cancer doctor's PA noticed about us - that we take for granted our physical sufferings for the joy of being with those we love. I wish everyone understood that like your parents do!
I am praying that you and your mom will find relief at HOME, happily ensconsed in your own beds with your loving father and sister around you. It will come. I look forward to the day when MLD is a manageable problem, like diabetes. I believe that will come as well. Soonere than later, please, Lord!

Off and on through the years with this cancer, since 1996, I have had full body or partial body spasms that give me an idea of what our MLD warriors endure constantly. Recently, I have been experiencing them nonstop, and the difficulties of getting out of bed to take care of myself have been huge. All along, I thought of Lucas and all his buddies, and prayed for relief for them. I still have hopes that they will find the cure in time to save all of our dear ones who suffer each day with some kind of leukodystrophy. My heart is with you in more ways than you can imagine. Loving you all so much!

If you keep up with Maddigan (transplanted with Lucas in MN for those reading this), she is having breathing issues, too. Makes me wonder .... She just got out of ICU and is in a step-down unit.
I will be praying that Lucas troubles are much simpler than organs shifting. Ugh. I have scoliosis and have those issues as well, although I can move myself and get back to normal quite quickly. My heart goes out to you all!

So glad to hear Lucas has not caught any of the flu viruses running rampid it seems...nor has Mac - KNOCK ON THE BIGGEST TREE! I'm glad to hear the switch in neurontin has helped with the bms, too...Mac is on continuous feeds so we mix a little miralax in with his formula and it goes in so slow all day long that it has helped him in that department. Praying always and every day for Lucas' comfort and strenghth for all of you and that Samantha continues to get stronger and stronger with each new day.

Hello Lucas, We wish you a happy 15 years Birthday . Its a little late but we have seen this website today at first time! We are a family out of the Netherlands and have two children with MLD. Erwin is now almost 30 years old and has have a transplant also in may 2002 he is very good coming out the transplant He has the adult form.But his sister Daisy she hat the juvenile form has a transplant in September 2001 on the age of 18 years old but is badly past away in October 2001 she has very many complications.
I'm glad too hear you are now in a better health then a few months ago! We are now also on the familylist from the MLD foundation since last March and we are glad to enjoy the families that fighting again this horrible disease.

I have been working off of my laptop and the website is saved on the home computer which is down. A few times over the last weeks I attempted to check the site but I was having difficulty remembering exactly the website address and could not access it. I've been by several times for an update, but I imagine you are rather busy! I am praying that Lucas is home and ready to take on the world of cartoons again! :) He is such an amazing young man, and while it's hard to believe that we have been checking on him for 6 years, I'm sure it seems like forever for you. I'm so glad you are keeping an eye on those transfers. I may have told you that a nurse broke my back during one 18 months ago, and I still have problems. It is hard for people to see brittle bones when they see dark hair! So the sooner Lucas is home to your excellent care, the better.
You two always amaze me. I do hope to get to NJ again this May. I miss the Jersey fam, and Trish has me so jealous!

Stuart has every reason to be sad, and that does not necessarily spelled depression. I used to have depression, which came from nowhere, as depression often does. Once I learned that it was an internal temper tantrum, I was able to release it to the Lord, and before Chris was a gleam in his daddy's eye, I was set free! I will be praying that Stuart finds his joy again. How well I remember his excitement when Lane took a turn for the better! I know he is kind and sensitive, and at his stage of life, he is thinking of a life partner. I will pray that the Lord brings her sooner than later, although I do wish that Steve and I had been a little more mature in the Lord when we married! Oh well, we learned together! :)
Loving you, and please don't let anything steal your joy! Even in my worst of times, I always have that, and when I don't FEEL it, I turn to the Lord to give it to me. And He always does! Life IS good, Diane, when Jesus is our LIFE. Like I need to tell YOU! :)

I was allergic to Aredia (which is like the drug Lucas is getting for his bone building), so I'm glad he can get something that helps. However, you may know that it does not actually build bone in the classic sense, as it only puts the cells back that were leached out of the bone - it does not create new bone. I have researched this, looking for something that I could take which would actully build bone, and I think I have found it. Curcumin, which is a derivative of tumeric, built bone in a study done at the U or Arizona under the guidance of Janet Funk, MD. I have researched it further, and other studies have shown this to be a remarkable substance that seems to restore brain matter as well. Since my stroke, I am looking for something to also restore the last of my vision, so this was like hitting the mother lode for me. It seems that it would benefit Lucas, as well. You can google it and see all the studies being done. I just started taking it this month, so I can't say where my bones and vision (the optic nerve was affected by the brain bleed), are yet, but I do have far more energy and don't have the back pain I used to have from when I broke my back.
I felt I should mention it.
Lucas, I am so happy to see you still going to school and getting nursing care regularly. You are one amazing young man, and it thrills me to say "young man"!!!! Your parents are wonders, no doubt. I am still praying for you for 100% and nothing less!

Your right about people not knowing what it's like. Having lived it for 14 months I know that an hour turns into a day, turns into a week and sometimes there's only been scant hours of sleep but one does what one has to do. It's the promise and the committment to helping our children live and be as well as possible. My heart breaks, it makes it hard to swallow, and brings tears knowing just how difficult it can be sometimes. And as long as I have missed Nathan you have continued to be there for Lucas. You do what you do cause you have to but I also know if it were to stop, you'd be lost. One of the things with MLD one can hope is that on some level, our precious children don't suffer any more than necessary. I continue to admire you guys for your steadfastness to Lucas. And I am so glad that you have a support system around you. I hope they come on strong in the coming days/years because like you mentioned people think things are OK -- but there's nothing OK with the progression of MLD or the stuff that one deals with post transplant year 1 to year whatever.
I hope you've had a good Christmas with your family and that Lucas is having a good day as well.
I hope the coming year brings relief when you need it, strength when your tired and the support of those around you. I hope this is the year that the medical community finds a breakthrough. God Bless!!! I always think of you.

Oh, Lucas! How I wish I could help in your care! Since I've had many of the same issues (they say I have the bones of a 120 year old woman now.), with broken bones and spasms, I feel as though I know exactly what you are feeling. That makes me so sad, but your laughter makes me so happy! What an amazing kid you are!
I'm sorry they haven't started the Palmidronate yet, although it may be just as well. Aredia was a horrible choice for me, but I pray it works for Lucas.
Your family is such a testimony of deep love and loyalty, and I'm alway glad when doctors see that and encourage you to keep seeking the best for your adorable son. I know you can't imagine doing less, but it does give me such a sigh of relief to know that you are getting some help for 4 hours a day, at least. Should be more ...

A compression fracture! Awwww....poor Lucas! I heard about a type of cement they can inject to fix backs. In fact, Carolyn (Wyman) had it done last summer on her back. Did they mention this as a possible means for relief for Lucas? I hope they do something for it! Sending you love and good thoughts!! ♥

Well, Lucas, did you miss me at the Walk???? Okay, so no, but I did miss seeing you! I had myself convinced that I would be well enough to come this time, but I needed surgery to stop some pain in my hip (although the pain I have now is worse --- sound familiar?). Anyway, I'm so happy that your 14th birthday went so well and that the Walk was a success.
I was sad that the meals stopped for you - I'm not sure I understand the reasoning on that one. Kindness should never get old.
Okay, I'll shut up now! Just wanted to stop by to see The Man! Loving all of you and praying that you will find the professionals you need to meet all Lucas' needs. I run into trouble for Susan so often that I'm completely empathetic to that one!

Samantha, what I would give for one more day to hang out! I'm back in Amarillo...it was so wonderful to see you this weekend! I loved our dinner on Friday night, and then the walk yesterday was so awesome! Abby is so precious, and growing up so fast. Lucas is such a special "big 14 year old." I hope to see you - and all of Lucas' friends and family - at the "One Step Closer" Walk for Leukodystrophy in Old Bridge, Saturday, May 17. At Lombardi Field at the high school in Old Bridge. Sign in begins at 12:00 noon, and the Walk begins at 1:00. Registration is open at www.stennisfoundation.org. Registration fee is $10 per person, which includes a t-shirt! Hope to see you and all the MLD-stroyers there!!

It is definately hard to believe it's been 5 years. January 21 marked 7 years since Nathan was diagnosed and it seems sometimes only yesterday that we were hunting hot wheel cars in the suburbs of Minnesota. I wished Lucas were doing better, didn't have the broken leg and could live without the steroids. God Bless....my thoughts are with you...
