Hello,

It has been a while since I visited your website, my computer crashed and I lost everything. I was just reading Dakota's website and saw that you signed and left your website so yeah! I just had Bell's Palsy two months ago and it was very strange. I had to take antibiotics, antivirals and steroids so I got a taste of what Tommy and the other transplant kids had to go thru. In 6 weeks I was back to normal but the hardest thing for me was eating and drinking because you can not move your mouth, cheek, lips, anything to help and I ended up and a lot of food and soda drooling down my face, LOL. Again, I got a taste of what Ciara and Hunter feel like sometimes, our poor babies. Well, if you have any questions about the Bell's Palsy, you know where to find me! I pray that everything resolves soon, hugs!

Your recent entry brought tears to my eyes. As I was sitting here reading it - Alexandra asked me why I was crying and I tried to tell her about this wonderful and strong little girl who is fighting to get better. When I told her that Ashleigh was sick she told me that she just needs to go to the doctor. If only it were that simple. It's amazing to see the innocence in a 3 1/2 year old who just believes that putting a band-aid on a boo-boo or going to the doctor or hospital for medicine or a shot will cure all. I hope and pray that you will both continue to be strong. We pray for you all the time and think of you always.

It hurts my heart to read this update, but we will NOT lose hope! Sometimes, we need to see what is real so that we remember to be grateful when things get better. My hemoglobin was 5 three weeks ago, and they couldn't figure it out, either. Nor did they, even after 6 units of blood. The pastors at our church prayed over me and anointed me with oil in the name of the Lord Jesus, and now my counts are back to normal range. We may never know why - that isn't important. Jesus doesn't need for us to know why - He does, and He knows how to fix it. And that's enough.

Michelle, you are a great mother, and I know that you will keep on doing whatever it takes to give Ashleigh a good life here.

"Lord, we who believe in Your healing touch agree together for Ashleigh, that her counts will be stable and that her smiles and laughter will return. We ask that Michelle will find the peace that passes all understanding. In Jesus' name, and for His sake - for He alone is worthy, Amen."

Ok, now that I am beginning to get settled in my current role I need to write to our supporters. First I want to thank each and everyone of you for the awesome support you have given my family over the years. I also whole heartily agree with how wonderful Michelle is. What most of you can get from her writings is only a small piece of how she really is. She the BEST (bestest as Mackenzie says) Mommy any child could ever ask for. I count my lucky stars everyday to have Michelle as my wife and my childrens mommy. Every time I talk to her she always asks me what I need. Right now I need her to do what she does the best and concentrate on being the mommy. She takes care of Mackenzie from a far better than some moms take care of their kids that are with them. My dear Michelle, I can imagine how bad this feels now - even though imagining can never come close to reality. But my first thought after reading your update is that you have so much faith for Ashleigh that you can easily have that much faith for Mackenzie! We will pray with you that the Lord turns this around for both of the girls - and most of all for you. Kids are, after all, far more resilient than we are. Mainly, our prayer will be that you will see the Lord in all of this - that all things really do work for good to those who love God.

I pitied my children so much when I got cancer - what would this do to them? Well, it made them wonderfully considerate and caring people. Not that they weren't before - but it dug it deep in them at a time in their lives when most kids become cynical. Now that I'm fighting cancer again, it is doing different things. It is making them dig deeper as young adults, at a time when many are looking for material wealth rather than spiritual/soul wealth. Oh, the Lord is so smart. While He does not make people sick, nor does He want them sick (No, He does not!), He will use it to bring them to a better place. Ashleigh is a real angel we are too blind to see as such - a real messenger of God. Let Him speak through her. I can tell you, I do hear it - I hear what Ashleigh came to say. And it's just beautiful!

I'm so glad that you have contact with Howard. I can hardly imagine that. I remember so well missing my Daddy when I was a child - he would be gone out to sea as much as 9 months at a time, and I rarely saw him. But I loved him intensely, and no one was happier than me when he finally retired from the Navy and could be home all the time. If I could have talked to him or gotten an instant answer to my letters, what an amazing comfort it would have been. But you know, it didn't warp me - I don't think!

Life will settle down, Michelle. It really will. Please know that you have so much support - both horizontal and vertical, because we love you so much! God bless you Gwins with dried tears and hearts at peace.

Michelle, I hardly ever pump gas, and I never get it right when I do. Always mess up something. Usually stand there trying to make it pump when I haven't lifted that doohicky yet. Who wants to smell like that all day anyway ...? I'm thinking of moving to NJ!

As for the funeral arrangements, I did that for myself when I had cancer and the nurses were constantly calling my husband and kids to "get here within the hour" because I was supposedly dying. I just wanted one less thing to be bugging them -- Did Mom want this, or this, or this? And you know me - I never gave up or seriously considered dying no matter what; still don't. So I think you're very wise to do that for Ashleigh and it is not giving up at all.

I love that Howard is sending you emails of absolute hope - which, as you may know, means "expectation of a guarantee" in the Bible. I also expect Ashleigh to be healed, and whatever is causing her trouble now is simply known by God alone. He knows how to fix it, so we will let Him. Amen.

So glad you took the time to update...have been and continue to be praying that Ashleigh will continue to heal and that soon you will see lasting results of a perfect healing here on earth...my heart bleeds for you as you endure...I know your suffering all too well...I can only imagine what it is like for our other children...Jeremy and Marina were older when Cody relapsed and seemed to handle the postponed promises and the backseat taking on too many occassions well...always telling us that they understood that Cody needed us to take care of him...it was difficult for them but they perservered...his passing was hard on them...Riley, had a difficult time through out...the constant shuffling between mommy and daddy...grandma and papaw...he didn't understand...and understands even less now...it is love that will pull them (and us) all through...MacKenzie knows she is loved and though she may be feeling lost and a little displaced...in time she will grow to understand and she will recognize the gift that has been bestowed upon your family in Ashleigh...she will recognize the heroes that can be found in her very own parents...don't you worry...she will know...my thoughts and prayers are with you...today...every day.

Whew. That's me giving up a sigh of relief, and I know y'all are sharing it with me because you are back safely at Duke and in the capable hands of Dr. K. I wish I could explain to people what it means to be there, to feel the support of the staff, and to finally be somewhere that you don't have to be the one who knows the most about Ashleigh or Krabbe! It is an overwhelming feeling of relief, no matter what the circumstances, and I know you are feeling a huge weight lifted just to be in Durham. Ashleigh will get better there, I just know it - she loves to show Dr. K what she's made of :). Be careful though and don't mention to her that Jhyrve and Jackson are coming out in April or she may just keep herself sick enough to stay and see her friends ;).

Michelle, Howard and girls,

I have not signed the guest book of late, but I check in daily to see how you guys are doing. I saw the update on Monday, and was surprised to all that was going on at DuPont. I was praying that since things were quiet that no news was good news!

Please know that you are all in our prayers! Michelle and Howard, I have been especially praying for your strength! I know how hard this journey has been for you both! Please know that so many others and I admire your strength, your faith, your spirit, and your resolve. You and your girls are an inspiration to so many. This is not a journey that you chose and I am sure that if given the choice, it would have been different! But God handed you this beautiful child, for safe keeping, to do all that you can for her. He gave you the most beautiful gift, a baby. For He knew when she was given to you that there would be heartache and pain. There would be decisions that would need to be made that no one should have to make for their child. He gave you these things because He knew that with out a doubt, she would be safe and protected and that you would make the right decisions and fight with every part of your being for her life.

We will continue to pray for His will to be done. We will pray that you all continue to find for strength and for healing, both emotionally and physically. I have begun to specially pray to the Blessed Mother for you Michelle, for strength and your continued courage. I have also begun to pray to Saint Gianna Beretta Molla for Ashleigh's healing. I couldn't get in yesterday - and now I get hit like my own baby has been hit. I love you so much, Miss Ashleigh, and I know how hard your family has fought for you. And even if Mom talks about letting you go, I know she won't until Jesus tells her to. She is that kind of mom. So hold tight, sweet baby, and we will do what we can to pray you through.

"Lord God, please have mercy on Ashleigh Ryann, and heal her for Your great name's sake. Take away her illnesses, her need for horrible meds. Give Dr K and Sue the knowledge of God to know exactly what to do to heal our sweet Ash, and do not let her fall to these germs. Please, Lord. Let Ashleigh live and walk and talk and enjoy the blessed home of love You have given her here on earth. We beg You, Lord. We beg You. PLEASE PRAY for Trish Knight's only child Braeden, 17, who is in PICU in Amarillo as of yesterday. She has been diagnosed with a rare illness that causes her body to reject nutrients. She will be in PICU a minimum of two weeks. She has stabilized, but as we all know, it is "the prayer of faith that saves the sick." Jesus be praised!

I have so many emotions after reading your words - thankfulness that the scare in regards to her disease progression has been put to rest, but so much fear and sadness that she's had such a hard time this past week. I wish I lived closer so I could be of more real help to you all, but all I can do is to offer up my prayers and healing thoughts towards Miss Ashleigh and wishes for strength for the rest of you. Michelle, your clear-headedness in times of panic has always been awe-inspiring to me... although you probably felt very frantic, you always manage to make good decisions for your family and keep it together even in the midst of all the chaos and confusion. This time was no different. You are an amazing mommy to Ashleigh and she is so blessed to have you to care for her. I'm continuing to pray for Ashleigh and her health, that she bounce back from this bump in the road and soon be on her way home with her family. I have to say, Michelle, that I have a lot of hope for the bi-pap to help Ashleigh sleep (as it has worked so well for Karla's husband (Mr Cuteness' dad)!) so that she can have more energetic days. But again I don't stop there, and as Trish and I are in agreement for her perfect health, we just keep at the prayers until it comes. The Lord chose to take 2 years for the cancer to be healed in me the first time, and it's been over a year this time (when statistics gave me less than 6 months once again), but I don't lose hope. I never feel in danger, even though there is no cure and I'm considered terminal. In the same way, I feel so secure for Ashleigh. I know that I know that Jesus Christ's plan for her is the truest happiness any of us can know. I have to remind myself repeatedly that what I consider happiness and what is real joy is often totally different. Ashleigh, in my heart, is one very happy child - so well loved! Many just don't have that.

I will be praying for Kenzie's headaches. My granddaughter Emily, who is almost exactly K's age, is having them, too, and she is not stressed at all. It may just be this strange winter we are having!

I found her in the backyard, nearly dead, and carried her inside, crying my heart out. Our family knelt beside her and prayed for her life. The vet said that her heart was nicked and the bullet went through her lung, that she would be gone by morning, but he would put her on IVs to help her pain. He called the next day, telling us to come get our dog, who was walking around the cage wanting to go home. She recovered fully. If God will do that for a dog, what will He do for our sweet Ashleigh? My hope is in Him, and Him alone.

Praying....praying....praying....

Levaquin is a good med, Michelle. It was given to my friend, Alek, last year after he, his wife, and granddaughter all went off a 30-foot cliff on a 4-wheeler, and survived. It was a freak thing. God did such wondrous things through their ordeal, I wrote a book about it, and it is now in the publishing process, with Tate Publishing of Oklahoma City, OK! The book is called "Walking Miracles," and production will start on it in January, so it should be in bookstores in the Spring.

Having said all that, Levaquin worked very well for Alek, so I am hopeful and confident it will work well for Miss Ashleigh. I hope that Howard has made it home...and that you all have a very Merry Christmas.

My nephew had seizures on top of his diabetes for many years, and they treated it as epilepsy. However, a sleep study revealed sleep apnea, and with a C Pap, he no longer needs meds for seizures. I realize that Krabbe is different, but I will be praying that in this instance, Ashleigh will indeed be "normal" and only need this issue of apnea addressed.

Mackenzie, since you are the same age as my granddaugher Emily (only you are ten days older than she!), I imagine what she would be saying if her younger sister Caelyn had stayed sick. I imagine that she would want more attention, too, just as we all did when we were in school and some kid would come in with a broken leg. We ALL wanted broken legs, so we could have a cast, crutches, and special treatment from our teachers! I think you are very, very normal.

Ashleigh, I'm so very sorry that you have been sick. Please tell Mommy that she has to TELL us when you're sick so we can pray about it!!!! And tell her to give you a thousand smooches from us, because we love you so much!

Michelle, I think the best part of your update was when your friend said that those children who have passed on are not Ashleigh. That is always how I've had to view this cancer - I can't look at anyone else's outcome. Thanks for reminding me of that!

Howard, we're so glad that you soon will be home for the holidays! One of our friends who just got back from Iraq for the second time said that the base is like they shipped America over there! While I know men like to get in on the action, I honestly pray that you will spend as much time as possible on BASE! :D

I am glad your mind set is bouncing back! I think you are right to worry about Mackenzie, my Hannah was the same way. "if I got really sick, you would pay more attention to me. I wish I was the one who got the BMT" Of course you are thinking things like "wash your mouth out and count your lucky stars that you're not!!" but I know it is really hard on them. Happy birthday to both the princesses!!!!! Skye had a smililar reaction to the flu shot. She's been full of junk since she had it. It's kind of a darn if ya do and darn if ya don't. Does Ashleigh have one of those vibrating vests? Skye is getting one this week. We tried it out at the docs and it made a huge difference in her lungs and secretions. Seems to be winter is definatley here where the suction machine is my best friend and her worst enemy. How exciting Ashleigh is going to start school. I can't wait to hear all about it. Enjoy the help from the nurse when they 1st starting coming to my house it freaked me out a lil bit but now's it's nice to be able to get some things done and maybe just have a moment to myself to shower and put on some makeup. lol a special treat nowadays. you, howard, and the girls are close in my heart and my prayers. You are so strong michele I admire you so much and I am so appreciative for all you guestbook entries whenever I was lost with Skye and didn't know what to do next you always gave me that go for it attitude. Wow, I really was right about the birthdays - yea, me! Sometimes, this memory actually works!

I'm so glad that Ashleigh has such good caretakers, and I do remember the Lioness being worried about THEM, so it's inevitable that you are worried about the new ones. The old ones were new once, remember! I pray for Jacob David in Wisconsin, and he LOVES school. He turned three in July. So we will pray that Miss Ashleigh has Mr Cuteness experience with school -- they gave him a special board so he participates in class by pressing the button, and even with bad vision, he does a great job. Mackenzie, I'm so proud of you doing so well in your horse show! Trophies on the mantel at such a young age! Your princess tea party with Belle sounds perfect! My granddaughter Emily has the talking teaset for that, and the teapot tells you when you've poured enough, etc. Do you have that one, too? I've been watching Beauty and the Beast for days now, as Rylie, who is two, can't get enough of it! I'm sorry you miss your daddy. When I was your age, my daddy was in the Navy, and my whole life it seemed I was crying for him. It was so wonderful when his ship came in, though! He would swoop me up and take me aboard to meet his shipmates, which was cool. But the best was when he retired after 20 years, and I got to have him home every day. We will pray that Christmas comes extra soon this year for you! I'm so glad you get to have that.

Michelle, your devotion to Ashleigh is a model in parenting, and you and Howard make excellent parents with grace and courage that are amazing. Krabbe hit you in the stomach, but you nailed it in the head. Keep on punching, girl. Krabbe is going down, and we will find the cure. God bless you, we will.

Oh, Michelle, please don't think that I've been neglecting Ashleigh, especially now. I've had some struggles here that have kept me away from the computer for too long, and when I did post, it was for the most ill. But Ashleigh is remembered in prayer at least once during the day or night; God is faithful to remind me all the time of His special ones. It's hard to believe sometimes, but Ashleigh really is doing better than most, and for that we are extremely grateful to the Lord.

Is Howard still in training to go over there? It still seems surreal to me that he actually went - I thought it would get cancelled. Well, you know me, ever positive! Not that I expect them to cancel the whole war, just Howard's unit!

How did Mackenzies horse show go? Does she train in dressage? My Susan did that and loved it. She can break any horse, even ones that seem totally incorrigible. We've always been proud of her gift.

How are the birthday plans going? We're making plans for Justin's (Nov 18) and Emily's (Nov 28). Rylie's is Dec 14, so we hardly get a break before Christmas! I think Mackenzie shares hers with Justin? Ashleigh's is Nov 15, right? I lost my calendar I kept these things on, and I've managed to do fairly well without it --- just off by a day or two! :)

Thank you for posting about Maddie. I know it means a lot to Jane. My heart is breaking, but we are so blessed to know that our girl is safe with the Lord.

I wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I have been following Ashleigh for a very long time(I remember back when you were still at Duke during transplant) I admire you, your daughter and both of your strengths. Ashleigh is a beautiful angel. I have prayed for Ashleigh and have sometimes wished there was more I could do for you. I want to tell you that I understand what your going through with your husband leaving to serve. My husband just got back this past Jan, after serving a year in Iraq. I heard from many that my son was too sick, the stress was too much for me etc.. that my dh should be home. It was made worse when Zach was rushed to the hospital by ambulance from another hospital, and ended up in PICU. Chris came home on leave, we made it through, and he went back. I wanted him to go back, it was gut wretching to let him go, but he had his job to do. What they don't understand when they make those statements are that this is part of our lives. Our husband's job still has to be done, our lives still have to continue. I was very proud of my DH and that he got the chance to serve. I'm very proud of your husband. It was very hard to be lonely, to lose that person who is right by your side. The hardest part of being a military wife, is made extremely hard when you have a sick child, but we are also the toughest, the ones who will make it through. If you need a shoulder, or someone to talk to, I'm here. My thoughts and prayers continue for you and your family.

Michele, I read your entry about Ashleigh's seizure while I was in the hospital, and I just sat and cried. I imagined your excitement, and to see her in need - oh, I just want it all to end for you this minute, that Ashleigh is healed and Howard is home - but it will come. We have to stay focused on the goal. Just keep your wonderful trust in the Lord to get you through these days to see the glory that is coming. God bless you, my sweet friend.

Words can not explain how I am feeling for you after reading the article. My 57 year old husband with the 42nd Discom out of Somerset, NJ, just returned home from Iraq 2 weeks ago. I know how I felt 18 months ago even with 2 healthy children and grandchild. My heart is breaking for you but just know that God is with you and your family. God will guide both you and your husband and hold your child in the palm of his hands until your husband returns. Please feel free to e-mail me at any time for support with your husband gone. O Michelle, I don't even know where to start. I was crying before I finished reading
your entry...then I went and read the newspaper article, and cried some more. My
heart breaks for you! You have so much to deal with right now. I'm so glad you have
some help.

I am praying hard, that God would miraculously bring Howard back home to you, and
also that He would keep His loving, healing hand on Miss Ashleigh Ryann. I pray for
these seizures to stop, and for the very cause of them to either be gone, or to be made
known so it can be corrected, in Jesus' name. I pray for the very life of God to flow
through Ashleigh's body - from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. And I ask
for strength and comfort for Michelle, in Jesus' name. Amen.
