Nicholas-
I am a former teacher and know how you feel about being in second grade...Some of my favorite years in the classroom were spent with that age group. I am so glad to hear that you are having fun--both in school and out--and I will keep you in my prayers for a long and healthy life. Collecting toys for kids in the hospital is a kind thing to be doing and will make many children very happy. You can be proud of your efforts and generosity. I will be adding some gifts to your collection. Keep up the good work! ~Ginger Johnson (of Winding River Plantation)

Nicholas:

We know your grandparents and parents and we are always marvel at your story and your strength to deal with such a challenge. The clear scan is a clear path to a full life and we are sure you'll live it to the fullest. This may sound cliche, but you have the capacity to do anything you put your mind to and we are sure you'll be very busy growing up. Stay well always and and let us know when you have completed reaponding you all your friends in the guest book. That is an impressive list.

It sounds as if you guys have been having fun and enjoying life. Good for you. Wanted to also wish you luck and send positive thoughts your way for your upcoming scans. We have our scans in March and this may be our last set too because after this visit we transfer over to the long term effect clinic instead of with our regular oncologist, so we shall see what they say when we get there. We certianly do share in your joys. Jared is 4 1/2 years since diagnosis and NED for 4 yers now. Praise God. May our kiddos remain NED forever and ever.

Ahoy Nicholas,
You are one handsome looking pirate. Thought I would stop in and meet you. Would like to tell you I will be thinking about you. I saw where you get your treatment at Duke University. Do you know Dr. Susan Christman? She used to treat my son at Riley Children's Hospital in Indy. She left there for Duke and she is a wonderful doctor. If you know her, please tell her Nathaniel Stewart is still here. He has relapsed twice since she treated him but he is now doing good. Just as you are and I am so happy that you are. It won't hurt to pray that it stays that way so I will pray for you.

Hi-
I am so glad to read that Nicholas is doing well. My son had the same diagnosis and protocol, so I check in on Nicholas often to see how he is doing, and for hope and reassurance as well!! My son is at 1 1/2 yrs. post transplant right now. He has an MIBG scan next week to check an abnormal spot on a bone scan in March. We are praying it is just an injured spot. Again, I will keep checking in on Nicholas and praying that he remains NED!!

I just found your site on Joey Thompson's site, so it's my
1st time to visit & sign in. My grandson, Adi also has neuroblastoma~you can visit his site and read about him:) He is also NED since May 2005, but hasn't had the full treatment that other kids here in the states have had because my daughter and Adi live in Romania~my daughter, Kari is in the process to try & adopt Adi. He was treated in Romania and hasn't had any stem cell transplants, radiation or antibodies. He is on accutane right now. So good to read about Nicholas and so glad that he could start Kindergarten this year:) Best wishes to your family and I'll be checking back soon. From Adi's Grandma Liz

Hi Nicholas! I haven't been by in a while - and am so happy to hear that you continue to be NED! Praise God!

Wow! you guys raised that much $$? I'm too impressed. I barely raised any for the Myrtle Beach relay. I'm surprised you guys don't start doing something for Curesearch as much as you do!

I just saw (oops, a month behind) the big article @ Paul in the GS Magazine! WTG! My office mgr brought it to my attention. I told her that I've already met Paul and even proudly display his magnet willsing4acure on my car! She then put 2 & 2 together!

Have fun in Kindergarden Nicholas! Laurel doesn't turn 5 until after the school year starts, so we have another year. AFter a scaring visit at MUSC last week, we too continue to be NED.

Hi Nicholas! Congratulations on graduating! How exciting!! But more exciting is the scan results from your visit here in May! I'm so happy to hear that you are doing so well. I was reading that while you were here that one of your "traditions" is to eat at Kanki! You'll have to let me know next you are here and go there to eat! I LOVE KANKI TOO! :o) Have a great summer!

I just love the new pics. Oh that little guy of yours, He is going to be a heart breaker. That is so so difficult when kids leave pre-school and go somewhere else. They do miss their friends but always meet new ones just as fun. We will have to wait and see if Nicholas really does marry his "best friend". Mike and I met in school and were "high school sweet hearts" but not pre-school. That would be neat. You all did a great job with the relay for life. WOW, that is alot of money. GREAT JOB!!!! I bet it was fun. We are in the midst of a ham sandwich sale now as a fundraiser. I need to work a little harder at it then I have been though. Both our little guys are off to kindergarten this year. Exciting but sad too. Sad because my they are growing up and no longer a baby but Great because they are here and doing it. We are truly blessed everyday by everything we get to enjoy and do. God bless and take care. When is vacation? Coming up soon? Where are you going? Hugs to you all. caringbridge.org/pa/jaredstrayer

I wanted to stop by and give you a big big thank you. I was having a bad day the other day. I really think I was more frustrated with myself and my reaction then to the kids actaul behavior. I love those kiddos so much and want them to have the world but boy there has to be a happy medium and we have to get there. We will too. I am still thinking about how that day went. I keep replaying it in my mind and wishing I had handled it differantly. Nothing I can do about that incident though, only learn from it and move on with our best foot forward and do better next time. Your words of encouragement were more than helpful. Thank you again. It sounds like you guys are having fun and enjoying the warm weather. We had a small taste of it and then we went back to cold or rain. That is funny about your little guy wanting to lose a tooth. That is how Jared was everytime his sister lost a tooth. I was showing Kirsten and Jared Nicholas's web page and we were talking about Nicholas and Jared. So when I went to the home page. We were talking about how Jared and Nicholas both had the same thing (referring to Jared's belly/NB), they both had a doggy named Buddy and when I showed them the picture I said what else do they have the same? Jared guessed they both have scars on their belly. Kirsten guessed where I was going though, they had the same outfit. They loved the picture of Nicholas holding the puppy and the picture with all the birds on him. They laughed and adored the dog. My kids both love animals so much. Well I hope you lose your first tooth soon Nicholas (which I am sure you will). Take care and god bless.

I saw Paul at Coastal Grande Saturday and he told me the good news! WOOOO HOOOO! I am sooo happy for the Black family! Nicholas is an amazing child! Luckily we don't have to do CT's - just CXR & u/s's. I know Laurel would FREAK w/a CT. We just had her 4 yr portrait taken (reason at the mall). She freaked at THAT!

Again, big CONGRATS on the NED!!! We go to MUSC in 2 weeks for our scans.

I checked in to find out the results of Nicholas' scans. So happy to hear he remains NED! That's the best news you could get for Thanksgiving! God is good...let us give thanks! Thomas was scheduled for scans the week before Christmas, but they requested his MIBG appointment for a child who needs to start MIBG therapy at UCSF that week. Looks like we will go the second week of January now. In the meantime, the whole family is going to Disneyland Dec. 14-17th!

Hi there - I found your page through another caringbridge site. So glad to hear that Nicholas is doing so well. He sounds a lot like our Thomas -- a talker, a love, and a ladies man! Thomas is 2 1/2. He was diagnosed Aug. 2004 with Stage 3 neuroblastoma, unfavorable histology and non-MYC amplified. He finished the high-risk treatment protocol in September and is doing great. We pray for more good news for you at your November scans.

Hi Nicholas, I found your site through a mutual friend - Brooke. We're all sending special prayers for her right now. My grandson, Skylar, was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma in June of 2004. He will be 5 next week. He has had many of the same treatments that you did (and a few more). He had a stem cell transplant in July, but it didn't have much effect on his remaining tumors. He'll be going to UCSF for some experimental treatment next month. Stop by his website if you get a chance, he also loves all the different messages. I'm so glad to hear you have NED!!! Hello, My name is Lisa Hobbs. I was just at Duke Hospital with my six year old daughter. How i came across your name is because the child life specialist gave my daughter a pillow case that i assume you guys made. It was so sweet that you guys made them for sick kids in the hospital my daughter really likes it. She got the one with ballerinas on it. It is so pretty
Anyways my daughter had been sick off and on for a while, but she really got sick this past weekened. I took her to the er and they determined that through a ct scan that she had an arachnoid cyst on the top of her brain. We then were transferd to duke hospital that night. They were going to do emergency surgery the next morning but she had a high fever so they had to wait untill the next morning. She also had hydrocephily on the brain because the cyst was not letting the fluid to pass. They told me that this was a bith defect that started this. They also told me this was rare to. I told him that was nothing new to me i also have a 10 year old daughter that has ediopathic chronic pancreatitis i have been told this was rare to. So i know how you guys feel to have a sick child i feel for you and i hope and pray to god that everything will continue to go well for your son. Ireally appreciate the pillow case my daughter got.I really think that was very special of you guys. well i shall go for now i will keep you all in my prayers.I f you have time remember my girls in your prayers also

Thanks so much, and god bless you all.

I was happy to hear that you are free of cancer, I pray that your scans are negative. I is good to hear of a good out come. My son just turned three and was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. We just finished our first round of Chemo, and it has been hard, the beginning of a bump ride. Your story has given me the hope that I need to get through this and it is a great to hear that someone has beaten it. Good luck to you.

Hi Nicholas,
We are so happy you are doing well and working on your second year now. Today is Meredith's 15th birthday and also her 1 year transplant anniversary (she doesn't get to have two like everyone else, but we're ok with that). She is having a great time at the beach celebrating with her family.
It really makes my heart sing to read good reports like yours. We will continue to keep you in our prayers and all the others that have traveled this difficult journey.
We wish you good health and happiness,

A friend sent me your webpage and I wanted to say, "Wow, what a trooper!" Your family has been through a lot of heartaches and headaches, I know from experience. My son was diagnosed with ALL T-Cell Leukemia June 12, 2003. Relapsed after 10 months in his spinal fluid, CNS Relapse. We stayed at St. Judes in Memphis for almost 10 months straight with all the treatments and low counts and fevers. He will be 13 on July 20, 2005! His website is on caringbride---la/aaroncjordan. As you progress through your recovery, it is my hope and prayer that you remember the love that everyone has shown, the prayers that were offered for you, and the concern that we all have that you will make a full and complete recovery. Although you are too young to remember the specifics, I do hope that you remember the spirit.

You are the definition of determination and courage, and you have exemplified what it means to be a hero to me. I know that there is a great and wonderful task for you to complete on this earth, and I hope that I live to see it.

Hi Nicholas: Enjoyed seeing your web page when we were in California. What a wonderful tribute to you, for all you've been though over the last year, and the strength given to you and your parents and family from our dear Lord. Enjoy the holidays, and don't worry about eating too many Christmas cookies!!! Love Barb and Bill Giese

Hi Nicholas,
You won't remember me as I met you at your grandparents (Ruth) house when you were a giggling baby boy, your sister Hannah was a little hugger, and your sister Meghan was a cute dancer. You and your family will always be in my prayers.

Hi Nicholas. I hope you remember when I visited your grandparents and we had pizza. I have your pictures from your Walk for cancer that shows your medal. What a hero. I am so glad you are doing better. Maybe I can come and visit you and your grandparents again next year. You take care and have fun on Halloween. Your website is all decorated for the holiday and looks real cute.
