Wow...I can't believe we are beginning the holiday season!! Seems like we just finished it last year. Last Christmas we went home to Ca to spend it with my granparents and aunt and cousing. My parents also flew out. This year....they are all coming here plus my brother and his family from Tx...so we will be crowded. It will be alot of fun tho!!

We are kicking off our 4th annual Pediatric Toy drive to benefit the local hospitals. In the past we have had such a great success with it...with the help of our community and my yoga teachers studio. Hopefully we will once again be able to load up the van with lots of toys, movies and gift cards to put some smiles on kids faces. The pic above is the delivery to one of the hospitals last year. It was great...and the kids love to do it!!!

Nicholas is just finishing up soccer and will start basketball here soon. He is also doing his Wolf pack in Cubs and loves it. He is doing great in school. Just got report cards and got all A's and 1 B (only 1 pt from an A). He really does like school and loves to read!! Meghan was on A/B honor roll for her honors 8th grade and Hannah is in honors 5th and had straight A's...so we are really proud of all of them.

We did go up to Duke a few weeks ago and all is well. They thought he looks great...labs and urine were great!! He doesn't have to go back for another 6 months!!!!!!

Well have a great holiday season and remember to keep those fighting in your thoughts and prayers!!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Wow...been awhile since I have updated!! The kids started back to school last week and so far so good! Nicholas is in 2nd grade now and loves his teacher!! Scary thing I realized this year...Hannah will be finishing up elementary and Meghan will be finishing up middle so next year I will have one in each school!! Where does the time go?
Our summer was fun...relaxing! We had company from the 5th of August til the 21st...so August was busy!! We took a few quick trips this year. One to Hershey, PA and one to Charleston, SC. They were both alot of fun. We hadn't ever been to Hershey before and the kids really enjoyed it.
Nicholas is excited to start soccer up again this fall. He will also be back with cub scouts as a Wolf. He really enjoys doing both!!
Medically...all is well!! We don't head back up to Duke til sometime this month or next...guess I will have to check on that. But he is doing great!!
Not much else to report. We are just waiting to see what TS Hanna decides to do...hit us or miss us. The bad part of living on the coast. Then Hurricane Ike is kind of following in her path so we may get a one-two punch here!!! Hopefully it won't be too bad!!
Thanks for checking in and please continue to pray for those still fighting NB!!!

Well we are quickly finishing up school here. Only 10 days left...where did this year go?? The kids are excited to be DONE with school!!
Alot has happened in the past few months since I last updated. Nicholas had to go back to Duke for another scan to rule out a questionable spot...ALL WENT WELL...NOTHING WAS THERE!!! Then Nicholas has been busy playing baseball...he walked in Relay for Life again. This year he walked the survivor lap with his grandpa (my dad) so that was pretty cool. Nicholas also turned 7 and had a BIG Star Wars party...25 young Jedi's came to our house for training!! They even had a visit from Darth Vader and they had to attack him and defeat him!! We had the Star Wars music playing and had smoke effects for Darth to walk through...it turned out pretty cool! Can't believe he is 7 years old already!!! YIKES!!
Our summer is going to be pretty mild this year...yea!!! We have some friends visiting from Los Angeles in August. We may take a trip here or there but I am actually looking forward to just hanging out at the pool or beach!!
Nothing really exciting to report!! Hope this finds all of you well!! Please remember to pray for those that are fighting the beast!!
Love, Heather

HAPPY SPRING EVERYONE!!
WE HAVE BEEN BUSY HERE LATELY. NICHOLAS STARTED BASEBALL A FEW WEEKS AGO. HE SEEMS TO LIKE IT BUT DOES LOSE INTEREST AFTER WHILE OF STANDING IN THE FIELD. HE HAS A PRETTY GOOD ARM BUT IS STILL A BIT AFRAID TO CATCH THE BALL. WHEN HE GETS OVER THAT HE CAN CATCH IT PRETTY WELL. HE LOVES BATTING THE MOST!!!

HE IS STILL BUSY WITH SCHOOL AND CUBS!! WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SPRING BREAK COMING UP IN A FEW WEEKS THO.....WE NEED THE REST!!!!!!!

NOTHING REALLY TO REPORT OTHER THAN WE DO HAVE TO GO TO DUKE ON THE 10TH TO HAVE A CHEST X-RAY TO JUST DOUBLE CHECK SOMETHING FROM HIS SCAN. JUST TO BE SAFE SINCE THIS WAS HIS LAST SCAN. HE ALSO HAS TO SEE HIS EYE DOCTOR WHILE WE ARE UP THERE. LUCKILY I GOT IT ALL SCHEDULED FOR A DAY OF SPRING BREAK. HE HAS MISSED ENOUGH DAYS OF SCHOOL THIS YEAR WITH ALL HIS SURGERIES AND SCANS!!!!!!

WE ARE GETTING READY FOR OUR RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT THE BEGINNING OF MAY!! NICHOLAS AND HIS GRANDPA WILL BE WALKING IN THE SURVIVOR LAP TOGETHER THIS YEAR!! NICHOLAS IS WALKING WITH OUR COMMUNITY TEAM THIS YEAR INSTEAD OF HIS SCHOOL!!

I HOPE EVERYONE IS STARTING TO WARM UP A BIT....WE ARE!!!! KEEP NICHOLAS AND ALL THOSE STILL BATTLING IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!!

TAKE CARE!!

SCANS ARE CLEAR!!!!!

Nicholas' scans came back NED (no evidence of disease) and he no longer has to have scans!!!!!! He will still have to go back up to Duke in 6 months for an exam and labs but no more scans!!!

I am exhausted so this is short!! Thanks for all those that kept him and will continue to keep Nicholas in your thoughts and prayers!!!

Will update when I am more awake!! Scan days are LONG and TIRING!!!!

Hello!!!
Just a quick update....On Saturday Nicholas had his first pinewood derby and HE GOT 2nd PLACE in his Tiger Cub den and 6th overall (out of about 30 cars). He was VERY excited and I was surprised cuz his car was designed BY HIM. Paul let him design the car. I really was worried that it wasn't even going to GO!!! But it did great!!! You can see a pic of the car on the album page!!

Also, a few weeks ago..Make a Wish gave us some tickets to the Hurricanes game. It was the first game for the kids and my first hockey game since LA. We got to explain the game and the kids really enjoyed it. He even got to check it off as a scout thing!! Paul didn't think it would be a good idea for me to wear my Kings jersey....guess I have to get behind the Cannes since we live here now!!!!

Last thing...and most important!!! On Wed Nicholas, my mom and I will head up to Duke for what we hope is NICHOLAS" LAST SET OF SCANS!!!!!! Wow that will be sooooooo great. So PLEASE keep him in your thoughts and prayers that he does well and that the scans are once again NED. It has been a long road and while he has been NED since 5/04 each step farther away from treatment is great!! Can breathe a little easier!!! He gets a bit stressed about having to go for scans but he does well!! So please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and I will let you know the results ASAP!!! Thanks!!!

Hope this finds you all well and please remember those that are still battling!!!
Love, Heather

UGH!!! I sat and wrote a whole new journal and IT IS GONE!!! I am not sure what is with this site lately!!!

So here it goes again...but a shorter version!!! We had a terrific toy drive this year and were able to deliver a bunch of toys to Duke and Rainbow Day Hospital. Our friends and neighbors were very generous this year and we appreciate the support!! We not only had the help of Winding River this year but Melissa (my yoga instructor) held a drive at her studio, Island Yoga! So thanks to all of the donations from her and her patrons!!

On December 20th we headed out to Los Angeles for the holidays!! We spent 2 weeks there visiting and having fun!! We hadn't been back for Christmas since we moved so it was a great time!! My grandparents, aunt and cousin were thrilled to have us...probably thrilled to get rid of us too!! My parents also went out for Christmas so it was just like old times!!! We got to spend time with some friends also and see some we hadn't seen in years!! We went to Disneyland (along with everyone else in so. Ca.) but we had the front of the line pass again so that helped. We hit every ride and some more than once!! It was a sold out day so most people had to settle for a few rides!! We also went and saw some of the Rose Parade floats being built. We didn't go to the parade cuz I have done that and it is miserable. Next time we will plan it better and get bleacher seats so we can go. We also drove up the coast to Carpenteria (just south of Santa Barbara) where I spent my summers growing up. We walked the beach and saw my old house!! The kids found some great shells too!! We went to the LA Zoo, rode the ponies and stayed a few days at our friends the Hollingsworths. We rang in the NEw Year's at their house with some other friends as well!!

Nicholas also got some new glasses when we got back!! They are a mild perscription so he hasn't been wearing them all the time...but so far so good. We haven't lost them or broken them YET!!!

Next month is HOPEFULLY Nicholas' last set of scans!!! He will be monitored via urine and blood work after that!! I can't believe he won't have to have scans anymore! It is reassuring to have those scans but I guess they feel he is now 3 years off treatment and a good prognosis. So please keep him in your prayers that the upcoming scans are once again NED!! I am sure they will be!!

Nicholas just started basketball and is liking it so far!! He is getting ready to start spring soccer also!!

I hope this finds everyone doing well and that you all had a wonderful Christmas and will have a happy and healthy 2008!!

Love, Heather

Hello!!
I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season!! We had a nice Thanksgiving and are looking forward to going back to Los Angeles for Christmas!! We haven't been back to LA for Christmas since we moved here. My grandparents and aunt still live out there and are very excited for us to come. My parents are also flying out there for it!! It will be a very memorable Christmas.

Nicholas' eye surgery went well...no complications! He recovered pretty quickly too!! NOW he has surgery tomorrow to correct a problem that was left due to where the tumor was and where it was pressing. So we will head up to Raliegh in the morning. This surgery will be at WakeMed which we have done EVERYTHING at Duke...so it will be interesting to see how it goes. We have just gotten so comfortable at Duke and know alot of the staff there...but I am sure WakeMed is a great hospital also!!

Our toy drive is underway and doing well so far. It had a slow start this year but I think since I started earlier this year (due to our travel schedule) people hadn't gotten in the Christmas spirit yet!! Hopefully we will have a vanload again this year!! The kids love to go deliver the gifts and make a day out of it!!

I hope this finds everyone well!! Please remember to keep those still fighting the fight in your prayers!!

Love, Heather

Happy Fall!! Wow where did the time go? The kids had a blast on Halloween (pics in the photo album) and we are now stocked for the year with candy!!! I am not kidding...we have TONS!!!

Nicholas is doing well. He just had eye surgery yesterday up at Duke and is doing well! We figured it was better to just go up there and have it done since they know his history and they have top notch doctors!! His left eye drifted out a bit so they decided to just fix it now before his brain decided to shut it down. They ended up doing both eyes. He is so good about this stuff it is kind of sad. He isn't in too much discomfort today...eyes are looking a bit ugly but he has a few days to recover before going back to school...HE doesn't like missing school!!

He also has to have surgery on the 30th to correct a problem that is a result of the cancer and chemo. It isn't a big procedure but I feel bad for him! Hopefully this will be the last of the surgeries!!! We considered putting it off til the first of the year but figured we might as well just get it over with!!! POOR BOY!!

We are looking forward to the start of our 4th annual toy drive for the children's hospitals!! The pic above is from last years delivery to Duke. That was just PART of what our community donated...the rest went to other hospitals and the Rainbow day Hospital!! We have had such generosity over the past few years we have filled our van...Sleigh...and made a day of delivering presents and then seeing the Meadow Lights on the way home. It has kind of become a fun family tradition for us and I love how it teaches my kids to do something nice for others. I hope we have just as well of a turn out this year!!

Nicholas is just finishing up soccer and is looking forward to basketball in Jan. He is LOVING cub scouts and went on his first campout last weekend...they FROZE but they had a blast!! He earned his Bobcat badge and is working hard along the Tiger Cub trail!!

The girls are doing well also...school, dance and piano take up alot of their time!!

This is also the time that Lunch for Life starts their Giving Tree campaign. If you would like to read more about Lunch for Life and make a donation in Nicholas' name you may copy and paste the link!!

http://www.lunchforlife.org/family/home.aspx?FamilyID=105

I hope this finds everyone doing well and enjoying the beginning of the holidays!! I love this time of year but it is also rough since this is the time of year that Nicholas was diagnosed (Nov 7) but I see how WELL he is doing and get lots of his hugs and kisses and it makes it all better!!

Take care!! Check out the pics in the album and sign our guestbook to let us know you were here!!!

Not too much to report!! Nicholas is doing well in school and seems to enjoy it! He likes his teacher and has learned to NOT TALK when she is talking. Nicholas is VERY social so that is tough for him. He is reading like crazy and his progress report was great!! Just needs to work on the not being so social when in class..lol.

Nicholas has been busy with the beginning of soccer and cub scouts!! He was very excited to start both. His best buds are on the soccer team and involved in scouts with him. He had his first soccer game this past Saturday and got 2 goals. He was sooo proud of himself. He is doing much better this year than last with getting in there and getting the ball. Last year he just kind of ran around the field and around the ball. Nicholas and Paul get to go on the first cub scout camping trip next month! Nicholas is looking forward to it! We got his casual uniform and have to go get his REAL cub uniform soon.

On a medical note...Nicholas is doing terrific. Unfortunately tho...he does have to have surgery on November 26 on his eyes. He has a drifting eye and the doctor feels it is best to take care of it now than wait and have the chance that his brain will shut that eye down! He is having it done at Duke (where else would we go they know us there lol) and the doctor that is doing it had done my nephews surgery so we know his work!! He is actually going to have both eyes done and he does need glasses also. This seems minor compared to all he has been through but still he has to go under GA and I hate that!! Just remember to please keep him in your prayers that day and following that he has a quick and relatively pain free recovery!!

Nicholas will once again get to be a starter at the Cape Fear Duke Children's Mini Grand Prix. This will be his 3rd year doing it and actually my first year getting to go!! He looks forward to doing it and since he is a HUGE race fan he loves to just watch the races!!

I hope this finds you all well and remember those still battling!! Please keep Nicholas in your prayers that his battle is DONE!!!

Thanks for checking in on him!! New pics are in the photo album and remember to sign his guestbook and let us know you were here!!

Love, Heather

Well our first week of school went off smoothly!! I just can't believe the summer is over already!! We did have a great summer tho. We got to go back to California for a few weeks, went to Atlanta for a few days with my mom and my niece and nephew and spent lots of time at the pool or beach. I know the kids were excited to get back to school and start the new year off!! Nicholas is now in 1st grade and loves it!! He was a bit bummed that he didn't get ANY of his neighborhood friends in his class...actually they were all split up between the 5 1st grade classes!! But he is VERY social and making new friends fast and like I explained to him..he can still see his buds at recess and afterschool. He loves his new teacher and assistant. He is reading really, really well and is really loving it too.

His sisters are enjoying school also! Meghan is in 7th...aaahh!! I went through the whole freaking out for her starting middle school last year but for some reason 7th just sounds BIG!! Especially when she borrowed my red sandals yesterday cuz "they went with her outfit"

Hannah is in 4th and is Ms. Socialbutterfly!! She has alot of her friends in her class but doesn't get to be in her main class much. She made AIG this year for both Math and Communications....so most of the time she is in that class. But she does get to see them at lunch, recess, resource and science. She needed to be challanged this year so it is good for her even tho it is harder. She enjoys it too...so that is good.

A few weeks before school started my brother and his family came out from Texas for a visit. So we were able to have a mini family reunion (just our immediate family). We spent most of the time up at my parents lake house...jet skiing, swimming, kneeboarding and tubing. The cousins all get along so well and even tho they don't all get to be together very often they just pick up where they left off last year. I posted some pics of them all together. They really do love being together....my kids and my one brother's kids see each other alot cuz they live in the same neighborhood but my bro from Tx we don't see as often.

Well unfortuantly NIcholas and I head up to Duke on Tuesday. His optomotrist wanted him to see a pediatric Opthomologist about his drifting eye. This is no surprise cuz it runs in the family!!! But she is sending him up for a consult on possible surgery for it before it gets too bad and his brain shuts that eye down. Shouldn't we get some sort of private parking space or something for all the time and money we have given to Duke??? Hopefully they will be able to get it done soon so it isn't something that will bug him. Or hopefully it won't have to be done...but that is unlikely.

Well we are off to the lake for the long weekend!! I hope this finds everyone well!!!

Love, Heather

Be sure to sign the guestbook and let us know you were here!! Thanks!!

SCANS ARE CLEAN!!!

We had a long 2 days at Duke but Nicholas did terrific and was a brave boy!!! His scans were NED once again!! When we saw his doctors yesterday after scans they said that he will have one more set in 6 months and THAT WILL BE IT FOR SCANS!!!!! They will still monitor his urine for VMA markers but other than that NO SCANS!!! Paul and I have mixed feelings about that. It is great that he has moved beyond them and his Dr is thrilled that he is 3+ years NED and 2+ years off treatment....BUT it is kind of reassuring to have those scans occasionally to KNOW there isn't anything there!! But we are thrilled that he will be done with them!!
Thanks for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers during scan time!!
Love, Heather

Monday, August 6, 2007 3:50 PM CDT

Nicholas will go for scans on the 8th and 9th....so please keep him in your thoughts and prayers that he will remain NED!!! I will update when we get back and let you know how scans went and what we have been up to this summer!!
Hope everyone is enjoying what's left of summer break!!!

May 30...
Wow I can't believe I haven't put up picks of Nicholas' party!! He had a really fun PIRATE party!! THey had a treasure hunt and yes the treasure was buried, played pass the cannonball, we were even attacked by another pirate ship!! It turned out really fun.

RELAY WAS ONCE AGAIN A BIG SUCCESS!! I LOVE WATCHING NICHOLAS STANDING THERE IN A SEA OF PURPLE SHIRTS WAITING TO WALK (OKAY RUN) THE SURVIVOR LAP!! HE REALLY DOES LOOK FORWARD TO RELAY EVERY YEAR...MAYBE CUZ HE IS SO SPOILED AND LOVED BY ALL THE OTHER SURVIVIORS. HE WAS THE YOUNGEST SUVIVOR THERE THIS YEAR...ACTUALLY THE ONLY KID. THEY HAD A DRAWING FOR THE SUVIVORS AND THE WINNER GOT TO GO UP IN A HOT AIR BALLOON AFTER THE SUVIVOR LAP! A MAN WON AND CAME UP TO NICHOLAS AND ASKED IF HE WOULD LIKE TO BE THE ONE TO DO IT....UH...DOES THAT MEAN MOMMY HAS TO GO?? NICHOLAS JUMPED AT THE CHANCE AND I MADE PAUL GO WITH HIM. IT WAS VERY SWEET OF THE MAN (WHO I NOW CAN'T REMEMBER HIS NAME)UNFORTUNATELY THE WEATHER STARTED TURNING WINDY AND UNPREDICTABLE SO NICHOLAS ONLY GOT TO GO UP A VERY SHORT DISTANCE AND THEN THEY PUT THE BALLOON AWAY. BUT HE WAS STILL THRILLED WITH IT!! AFTER THAT WE WALKED A BIT AND THEN WENT TO THE VIRGINIA WILLIAMSON ELEMENTARY BOOTH. THEY HAD A BOUNCE HOUSE SO THAT IS WHERE NICHOLAS WAS FOR THE REST OF THE EVENING. HE WOULD NOT GET OUT OF THERE!! HE GOT TO VISIT WITH SOME FRIENDS AND THE GIRLS GO TO SEE SOME OF THEIR FRIENDS AND TEACHERS. I BELIEVE THE PRELIMINARY AMOUNT RELAY RAISED THIS YEAR WAS $300,000...FOR A SMALL COUNTY THAT ISN'T TOO BAD!! OH A REPORTER ALSO CAME AND INTERVIEWED NICHOLAS AND I AND GOT EVERYTHING IN HER STORY WRONG!! HE CAME HOME FROM SCHOOL YESTERDAY WITH QUITE A FEW COPIES OF THE ARTICLE AND HIS PICTURE THEY PUT IN IT!! IT WAS PRETTY CUTE BUT NOT A VERY WELL DONE STORY!!

WE ARE EXPECTING LOTS OF PIRATES THIS WEEKEND!! NICHOLAS' BIRTHDAY IS THIS SATURDAY AND HE IS COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS!! HE WAS SOOO EXCITED THAT HIS BIRTHDAY FELL ON A SATURDAY THIS YEAR SO HE COULD HAVE HIS PARTY ON HIS BDAY!! HIS PARTY SHOULD BE REALLY FUN...EVERYTHING IS PIRATE!! I WILL POST PICS AFTERWARDS!!

WELL OTHER THAN THAT NOT MUCH TO REPORT!! NICHOLAS IS DOING TERRIFIC AND GROWING LIKE A WEED!! HE CAN'T WAIT FOR SCHOOL TO BE OUT AND SUMMER TO BEGIN!!

LOVE, HEATHER

Hello all,
Not much to report! Nicholas' birthday is on the 12th and he is VERY excited about his party!! He decided (after a LONG time at the party store) to have a Pirate Party!! I think it will be pretty cute. I made the invitations out of parchment paper and printed them on the computer then burned the edges and tied them up with jute. It said that Captain Nicholas was looking for a crew to celebrate his party. Then when the kids get here they will each get a pirate doo-rag (hat thing) and then have to perform certain things to get an eye patch, sash and sword. They will have to walk the plank across a pool...hunt for buried treasure and stuff. It should be cute!!

We are also participating in our local Relay for Life this friday! He will walk the survivor lap...okay he will RUN the survivor lap. I just LOVE seeing him do that!! If anyone would like to donate to his team you may use the link below. You may have to copy and paste since I am in a rush to code it correctly!!
https://www.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=189665&supid=172670638

School is almost out and I just can't believe how fast the year has gone!! WOW!! Seems like yesterday it was the first day of school!! YIKES!!

I hope things are well for everyone!! When I get time I will post new pics of Nicholas!! I have some really cute ones!!

Take care!!!

****Feb. 2007 Scans NED!!!!****

Happy Spring everyone!! We are all fine here except for dealing with the allergies. The pollen is really bad here this year....layer of yellow on EVERYTHING!!!

The kids start Spring Break tomorrow til the 16th. We will head up to my mother-in-laws for a few days over break. Other than that we will just enjoy sleeping in and hopefully the weather will be nice enough to go play at the beach!!!

We are starting our fundraising for this year's Relay for Life. Nicholas will walk with his school team..Virginia Williamson. We are getting some donations for an auction and actually have had a good response so far. This will be Nicholas' 4th year walking....1 as a patient and 3 as a survivor. It is always a bit emotional cuz during the survivor lap he is one of the youngest and the other survivors are just so great with him. Someone always "adopts" him for the survivor lap...little do they realize HE RUNS THE WHOLE THING AND THEN SOME!!!!!! Last year this man asked if he could watch over Nicholas during the lap and he kept up with him for part of it. That kids is FULL of energy!! Last year Nicholas alone was able to contribute $4500.00 toward his team. So we will see if we can beat that this year!!

Nicholas' birthday is next month and he is ALREADY planning his party. At first he wanted to have it at the movies to see Spiderman 3....but after I saw the previews and that it is PG-13...I didn't think it would be all that great for a 6 year old party. So he wants to just have one at the house with all his friends. He is leaning toward a NASCAR party again (last year's theme) but we will see if that is what he stays with!!

I hope this finds everyone well and that everyone has a great Easter. Thank you for checking in on Nicholas and please continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers that he will stay NED!!!

Love, Heather

Good day all,

ONCE AGAIN....SCANS CAME BACK NED (no evidence of disease).

Our trip to Duke was fine. It is just 2 long days for testing!! Day 1 is clinic and MIBG injection, Pre-op exam (due to the fact he has to go under GA for it)...then we were done around 3. Usually we ALWAYS have to go to the same restaurant while we are up in Durham but this time he changed his mind. Then we usually ALWAYS have to go swimming in the evening but he wasn't feeling too hot due to his cold and he was tired...so we didn't go. He told me I could go and he would watch...but we just played with his new toys and went to bed early.

Day 2...we had to get up at 5:15am.....I AM NOT A MORNING PERSON. We had to be at the hospital by 6:30 and his scans started at 8am. He did fine and woke up from anesthsia grumpy as usual. But he quickly fell back to sleep in the car and about a half hour later woke up cheery. In the post-op he kept screaming he wanted the "dizzy" to stop...poor boy!! I just really don't think he could sit still for the MIBG (which lasts about 2 hours). Maybe next time we will try sedation again...but he broke through it last time we tried it and woke up midway through the scan. We will see.

He doesn't have to be seen again for another 6 months...YEA!!

Thank you for all that kept him in your prayers for clean scans and keep praying that he will remain NED.

Have a great day!!
Love, Heather

Wow...it has been awhile since I updated. We had a great Christmas and a good start to the new year!1 Nicholas is loving school but is VERY SOCIAL and TALKATIVE. He has gotten perfect attendance for the whole school year so far and he is sooo proud of that!!

Unfortunatly next week he will have to miss 2 days as it is SCAN TIME!!! UGH!! We will head to Duke on Feb. 7th for his clinic check up, pre-op and his MIBG injection. Then on the 8th he will have a CT scan and MIBG under general anesthesia. Please pray that his scans continue to be NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE.

Not much else to report. Nicholas is getting excited to start spring soccer soon. He really missed playing. So we will see how this season goes!!

Hope this finds everyone doing well and again PLEASE PRAY FOR CLEAR SCANS....I really hate scan time. I am just a bundle of stress!! I am sure they will be fine!!

Take care,
Heather

HO! HO! HO!
I hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas season!! We have been busy getting ready for Christmas!!

Tonight we FINALLY got the chance to go see Santa!! And the best part was....THERE WAS NO LINE!!! We caught Santa right when he was going to go on his dinner break but being the nice Santa he is....he let us come see him and have the kids pictures taken. Nicholas sat and gave him a run down of his Christmas list. He REALLY wants a Gameboy SP (he isn't big enough for a DS) a MP3 player, some NASCAR cars, Magnetix...blah blah blah!! Hannah went next and she has a very little list this year...there was just nothing she REALLY wanted other than an iPOD. I have strange children. Meghan being 11 sat on Santa's lap but didn't give him her list of clothes and jewelry. But it was fun and got a cute pic...which Paul will have to scan for me cuz they wouldn't let me take a pic with my camera...I guess even Santa has to make money...lol

A few weekends ago we went up to a place called Mike's Farm with my brother and his family and my parents. We went last year and had so much fun we decided to make it an annual thing. It is just some guys farm that he opens up to the public durning the holidays. They have a REALLY good restaurant that serves family style country cooking...and it is such a cute place how they have it decorated. The inside looks like you are sitting outside on the front porch. Anyway...then they have a hayride that takes you through the trees and he has it all decorated with lights and light figures/scenes. They play music the whole time and at the end it snows on you! That just THRILLED the kids even tho they knew it was coming!!! It is a good place to get in the holiday mood!!

We did our annual toy drive for Duke. I started it about 3 years ago in our neighborhood. We once again had a great turn out! We will be delivering the toys this week on Wen. The kids always look forward to heading up with our vanload of toys and piling them in the wagons to take to the unit. I took the kids to Build A Bear and let them make some bears to take. It was a great experience for them...teaching them about giving and charity. I was so proud too cuz they didn't ask if THEY could make one or keep one. Well Meghan made comments about wanting a dog one but she snapped out of it!!! Oh well!!

Other than that not much else going on. Just trying to get ready for Christmas!! We have all had a nasty cold (our one alloted for the year) and have been trying to get over it. Poor Nicholas tends to still hang on longer than anyone but has finally gotten rid of most of it. Just a lingering cough now and then.

The Lunch for Life campaign is still going on and will go on til Christmas. If you would like to make a donation in honor of Nicholas....click on the link below and it will take you to his giving tree. His giving tree code is 19244 so make sure to put that on the donation form...it gives extra ornaments on his tree!! The money raised goes towards finding a cure for Neuroblastoma!! Thanks!!

NICHOLAS' LUNCH FOR LIFE GIVING TREE

I hope this finds everyone well and enjoying the holidays!! May you all have a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy 2007!!

HELLO!!

I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A FUN AND SAFE HALLOWEEN!! WE HAD A BUSY WEEK LEADING UP TO HALLOWEEN BUT IT WAS FUN!!
WE WENT TO PUMPKIN DAY AT INDIGO FARMS AND WENT ON A HAYRIDE OUT TO THE PUMPKIN PATCH AND GOT TO PICK A PUMPKIN. THEN THAT EVENING WE WENT TO OUR PUMPKIN PATCH THAT WE HAVE BEEN GOING TO FOR A FEW YEARS NOW TO GET THE REST OF THE PUMPKINS!! ON SATURDAY WE HAD A PARTY AT A FRIENDS HOUSE. ALL OF US HAD TO DRESS UP....SO...I WENT AS A BLACK BRIDE (DEAD BRIDE), PAUL HAD A SPONGEBOB COSTUME FROM A FEW YEARS AGO, MEGHAN WAS A VAMPIRESS, HANNAH A ROCK STAR AND NICHOLAS A NASCAR DRIVER. THEY HAD SO MUCH PLANNED FOR THE KIDS TO DO...THEY HAD A BLAST!!

ON HALLOWEEN WE WENT ON OUR ANNUAL COMMUNITY HAYRIDE. WE LOAD ALL THE KIDS UP IN OUR COMMUNITY ON TRAILERS AND EACH YEAR PICK A SECTION TO HAUNT. OUR COMMUNITY IS GATED AND SET UP IN 4 SECTIONS...SO WE CAN'T GET ALL OF THEM. THOSE THAT WANT TO SEE THE KIDS BUT AREN'T IN THE SECTION WE ARE HAUNTING...CAN COME BEFORE TO THE CLUBHOUSE AND WE DO A TRUNK OR TREAT. THESE POOR KIDS ARE SOOOO TIRED AFTERWARDS CUZ THEY ARE RUNNING AROUND FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE. THEY END UP WITH SOOOO MUCH CANDY IT IS RIDICULOUS!!

NICHOLAS ONLY HAS TWO MORE SOCCER GAMES THEN THE SEASON IS OVER. HE HAS REALLY ENJOYED PLAYING AND IS ALREADY ASKING ME WHEN THE NEXT SEASON IS!!! HE IS FUNNY TO WATCH CUZ HE WILL GET IN THERE TO GET THE BALL BUT......IF HE IS PLAYING A TEAM WHERE HE KNOWS SOMEONE ON IT....ESPECIALLY IF IT IS HIS LITTLE GIRLFRIEND FROM LAST YEAR....HE WON'T TAKE THE BALL AWAY. AND IF SHE FALLS OR SOMETHING...HE IS RIGHT THERE HELPING HER AND MAKING SURE SHE IS OKAY. NOW MARISSA IS VERY INTO SOCCER SO SHE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT NICHOLAS BEING A GENTLEMAN!! POOR BOY!! BUT MOST GAMES HE IS RIGHT IN THERE GETTING THE BALL AND EVEN GOALS!!

THIS IS A HARD TIME OF YEAR FOR ME CUZ THE DAY AFTER HALLOWEEN 3 YEARS AGO WAS WHEN NICHOLAS STARTED GETTING SICK AND BY THE 3RD WAS IN THE HOSPITAL. WE FOUND OUT "SOMETHING" WAS IN HIS ABDOMEN ON THE 6TH AND TRANSFERRED TO DUKE AND GIVEN A DIAGNOSIS ON THE 7TH!! SO THIS ISN'T MY FAVORITE WEEK...BRINGS BACK TOO MANY MEMORIES! WE ARE JUST THANKFUL THAT HE IS DOING SO WELL NOW!!

NOT MUCH ELSE TO REPORT. SCHOOL FOR THE KIDS IS STILL GOING WELL!! THEY JUST FINISHED UP THEIR FIRST GRADING PERIOD AND WE ARE WAITING FOR GRADES....BUT THEY ALL DID TERRIFIC!!

NICHOLAS DOESN'T GO BACK TO DUKE TIL FEBRUARY...YEA!! WE WILL BE GOING UP SOMETIME IN DECEMBER TO DELIVER GIFTS TO THE KIDS. I ALWAYS HOLD A TOY DRIVE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND BRING UP A VAN LOAD OF TOYS FOR THEM!!

OH....THE LUNCH FOR LIFE GIVING TREE HAS STARTED!! ALL THE MONEY RAISED BY THIS GOES TOWARD RESEARCH TO FIND A CURE FOR NEUROBLASTOMA!! THE IDEA IS TO GIVE UP YOUR LUNCH FOR A DAY, WEEK, MONTH WHATEVER YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO DONATE THAT MONEY TO LUNCH FOR LIFE. PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINK IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A DONATION. THANK YOU!!

NICHOLAS' LUNCH FOR LIFE GIVING TREE

HOPE THIS FINDS EVERYONE WELL!! PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR NICHOLAS TO REMAIN NED AND FOR THOSE STILL BATTLING!!

LOVE, HEATHER

Hello Everyone!

Well things are going pretty much status quo here, which is great. Nicholas started soccer last week, and he is doing quite well. Although at his age they don't count goals, he did score twice for his team and once for the other team in the first game! Not bad.

He is also doing well in school, along with Meghan and Hannah, so the academic year has gotten off to a great beginning.

There really isn't much more going on here for now.

We ask that you keep all those who are battling the beast in your prayers that they may be cancer free, and we ask that you continue to pray for Nicholas that he remains cancer free. Scans are coming in February.

Have a great day!

Paul Black

WELL....OUR SUMMER VACATION IS OVER!! THE KIDS WENT BACK TO SCHOOL TODAY....BUT LUCKILY THEY WERE ALL EXCITED TO GO!!

NICHOLAS WAS VERY EXCITED TO START HIS NEW SCHOOL....THE "BIG" SCHOOL AS HE CALLS IT! HE DID REALLY WELL...BUT THEN AGAIN HE WENT TO ALL DAY PRE-K LAST YEAR. HIS TEACHER IS MRS. PRIESTER AND HE EVEN HAD 2 KIDS IN HIS CLASS THAT HE KNEW! ONE FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE OTHER FROM CHURCH! HE ASKED IF HE COULD WALK IN BY HIMSELF THIS MORNING BUT I HAD A BUNCH OF STUFF TO TAKE IN AND OF COURSE I HAD TO GET SOME PICS!!

THE LAST FEW WEEKS OF OUR VACATION HAD BEEN BUSY ONES. MY BEST FRIEND FROM HIGH SCHOOL CAME IN TOWN WITH HER SON AND SPENT A WEEK WITH US! THAT WAS ALOT OF FUN TO SEE THEM! LAST SUMMER NICHOAS AND I FLEW OUT TO RENO TO SEE THEM. WE WENT JETSKIING, TO THE BEACH, TO THE AMUSEMENT PARK, POOL, AND TO MAGIQUEST! WE REALLY ENJOYED HAVING THEM HERE AND MISS THEM ALREADY!

LAST WEEKEND, WE WENT UP TO REHOBOTH, DE TO SEE PAUL'S MOM AND BROTHER. NICHOLAS' UNCLE RICK HAD BOUGHT NICHOLAS A REAL ELECTRIC GUITAR....SO NICHOLAS WAS ANXIOUS TO GET UP THERE TO GET HIS NEW RED GUITAR. HE EVEN GOT HIM AN AMP....WASN'T THAT NICE?? I HAD THE GREAT IDEA THAT WE LEAVE IT AT UNCLE RICK'S SO EVERYTIME WE CAME UP NICHOLAS COULD BLAST IT OUT THERE....LOL...BUT NO IT CAME HOME WITH US AND HE WAS VERY EXCITED TO HAVE IT!! THANKS RICK!! (SEE PHOTO ALBUM FOR THE "NEW, RED GUITAR"!)

MEDICALLY, NOTHING NEW....JUST THAT THE LAST SET OF SCANS WERE CLEAR (AUGUST) AND WE DON'T KNOW WHEN WE GOT BACK....3 OR 6 MONTHS.

EVERY SO OFTEN (USUALLY AROUND SCHOOL TIME) WE MAKE THE KIDS STAND IN A DOOR JAM OF OUR HALL CLOSET AND MEASURE HOW BIG THEY HAVE GROWN. THEY HAVE ALL GROWN ALOT!! NICHOLAS WAS SOMETHING LIKE 4 INCHES IN THE LAST 9 MONTHS. MEGHAN IS NOW 5'3....SHE IS GAINING ON ME!! AND HANNAH...SHE IS GOING TO BE TALL! SHE JUST TURNED 8 AND IS ALREADY AS TALL AS MEGHAN WAS WHEN MEGHAN WAS 9 1/2.....I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING TO BE THE SHORT ONE IN THE FAMILY!!!

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN ON NICHOLAS! HE DOING TERRIFIC AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO HIM ENJOYING HIS KINDERGARTEN YEAR!! HIS TEACHER WILL SURE NEED A BREAK AFTER HAVING HIM IN HER CLASS....LOL....HE IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY GOOD KID! JUST VERY BUSY!!

TAKE CARE AND KEEP PRAYING FOR THOSE THAT NEED THEM!!

LOVE, HEATHER
CHECK OUT THE NEW PICS AND PLEASE SIGN NICHOLAS' GUESTBOOK AND LET HIM KNOW YOU WERE HERE!!

NICHOLAS WENT UP TO DUKE FOR A CT SCAN TODAY AND ALL IS CLEAR!!!!!!! STILL NED!!! AS ALWAYS IT IS SUCH A RELIEF TO GET ANY TYPE OF SCAN OVER WITH! IT IS ALWAYS STRESSFUL THE WEEK BEFORE SCAN AND THEN YOU HEAR THOSE WONDERFUL WORDS.....NED.....AND THE STRESS GOES AWAY....AT LEAST UNTIL THE NEXT ROUND APPROACHES!!

THANKS FOR THE PRAYERS AND WILL UPDATE MORE SOON!!

LOVE, HEATHER

Sunday, August 13, 2006 8:02 AM CDT

OOPS!! I REALIZED THAT I HAD THE WRONG DATE ON HERE FOR NICHOLAS' SCANS!!! HE WILL ACTUALLY GO UP TO DUKE THIS TUESDAY....THE 15TH FOR A CT SCAN!! PLEASE SAY A PRAYER THAT THE SCAN WILL ONCE AGAIN BE CLEAR!! PAUL WILL TAKE HIM UP THIS TIME SINCE WE HAVE COMPANY IN TOWN...MY FRIEND FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND HER SON.

NICHOLAS IS VERY EXCITED ABOUT KINDERGARTEN TO START! WE HAVEN'T FOUND OUT WHO HIS TEACHER WILL BE YET...BUT WE SHOULD SOON. HE WILL HAVE OPEN HOUSE ON THE 22ND AND THEN SCHOOL STARTS ON THE 25TH. HANNAH ISN'T QUITE READY TO GO BACK...EXCEPT TO SEE HER FRIENDS.....AND MEGHAN IS BOTH EXCITED AND NERVOUS TO START MIDDLE SCHOOL. SHE AND I WENT TO ORIENTATION YESTERDAY AND SHE GOT TO SEE HER SCHEDULE (WHICH WAS ALL WRONG CUZ THEY DIDN'T HAVE HER IN AIG...SO THAT IS BEING FIXED) SO WE WILL HAVE TO GO BACK DURING OPEN HOUSE TO SEE HER CORRECT CLASSES!

WELL IT IS A GORGEOUS DAY SO WE ARE OFF TO THE BEACH!! AGAIN, PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR CLEAR SCANS!! THANKS!!

LOVE, HEATHER

Boy.....I just spent the last 15 minutes writing a nice long update and LOST IT SOMEHOW....so now I will do the abbreviated verson!!

Paul and I got back from our cruise on July 2nd. We had a great time on the new ship, Crown Princess....yes the same one that listed hard left today....we were the second sailing and I am soooo glad it didn't do THAT while we were on it!! Our cruise was a 9 day out of NY with ports in Bermuda, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and Grand Turk (which I just LOVED) Then we had 4 sea days to do nothing but RELAX....but then it was back to the real world!!

When we returned home we found out that our friend, Ryan, had lost his battle with ALL the friday before. We knew it was going to be anytime now but it still was so sad. He and Nicholas went through transplant at Duke the same time...Ryan on the adult BMT and Nicholas on the peds BMT. Please say a prayer for his family....Ryan fought hard til the end!!

On a more cheerful note.....the day after we got home we had Hannah's baptism. It was nice cuz we had alot of family in town visiting so they could all be there. The rest of that week we spent with the family.

We have been enjoying the summer by hitting the pool, beach or going jet skiing. We even FINALLY got to take the boat on the inagural ride. No fishing yet and the kids (and Paul) are anxiously waiting to be able to get out to do that!!

Yesterday Nicholas got to do something he just thought was soooooo great. He got to meet Kasey Kahne. Boy did that just amke Nicholas' day! Now....the things we won't do for our children. First of all I am not a NASCAR fan that is a Nicholas..daddy thing. So I had to get up yesterday morning and drive down to Myrtle Beach NASCAR speedpark (about 45 min.) and get wristbands so we could come BACK that evening and meet Kasey. I decided I wasn't going to wait in the 2 hour line to get the free wristband so I did Option 2....buy $50 worth of merchandise and get a wristband....sounded MUCH better to me. So Nicholas got a hat and a shirt and Meghan got a hat (Hannah isn't a fan either). So back home I went....THEN BACK to Myrtle Beach in the evening to wait in another 2 hour line IN THE HEAT to meet Kasey Kahne....did I mention I am not a fan?? Paul is but he was busy so I HAD TO DO IT!! Finally we get up to the front of the line and the lady announces that they are trying to get people through faster so they will not be taking posed pics just those you take WHILE he is signing. GREAT!! We have one wristband that entitles you to one autograph....so Nicholas gives him his hat (kasey Kahne hat) and he signs it...all the while talking to Nicholas about stuff. Kasey then asks Nicholas if he would like his shirt (also Kasey Kahne) signed....Nicholas' eyes got soooo wide with excitment cuz he knew he was only suppose to get one signed thing. If that wasn't good enough.....Kasey Kahne THEN tells Nicholas to turn around so I could get a pic. Now I was watching others go through the line and they moved them along pretty quick....and here is Nicholas just chatting up a storm with Kasey and getting not one but 2 pics with him!! Oh....and as Nicholas loved to point out...."he touched me!!!" That little boy was so excited and for the rest of the night we had to hear about him getting 2 autographs!! What a treat for him!!

Medically...nothing new! We go for a CT scan on the 11th of August. Nicholas has to go next week for his kindergarten physical and all the fun shots to go with that!!

Hope everyone is staying cool and enjoying their summer!! Take care!!

Love, Heather

The summer weather is finally here! It actually hasn't been TOO hot....yet. The other day we went jet skiing and the kids just loved it! The kids and I also tried Knee boarding for the first time. Nicholas got right up on it.....NO FEAR and fell off one time on a turn but other than that was able to ride the lake without falling off. Hannah had a bit of trouble getting the hang of it but once she did she did terrific. Then Meghan tried and she too got right up. So I decided "hey I have waterskiied...I can do this" Okay....so the first time I face planted it but on the second try I got on and stayed on!! We all had a fun time!!!

On Friday Paul and I will leave for our cruise and the kids will spend the time with Grandma, Grandpa and Aunt Jane in Myrtle Beach. We are all looking forward to our vacations!!

No medical news. Nicholas doesn't go for scans til August so we are free of Duke til then!!

Hope all is well and hope everyone is enjoying their summmer!!

Love, Heather

Nicholas is now 2 years post transplant!! Sometimes it seems like yesterday...other times it seems so long ago. He has grown so much since then....looking back he was such a little toddler!! I am so thankful to see him a wild and crazy 5 year old boy!!
We are having a good summer so far. Last Friday we hit Myrtle Waves to celebrate the end of the school year for all the kids and for Meghan's 5th grade promotion! I can't believe I have a middle schooler now....AAAHH!!
Next week Paul and I head off for our much needed vacation!! We are going on a cruise with my brother, sister in law and grandparents. It should be alot of fun! The ship we are going on is brand new...we are the second sailing. My kids, and both my brother's kids....so 7 in all are going with my parents and aunt down to Myrtle Beach to a resort for the 10 days we are gone. When we get back it will be my parents and aunt that will need the vacation!! I am looking forward to it but will miss the kids!!
Please keep our friend Ryan and his family in our prayers. He relapsed once again with ALL and this time they aren't going to be able to do anything for him. He is home now (he had been at Duke following his 2nd transplant) and is being surrounded by friends and family. Please pray for them!!!
Not much else to report! Hope everyone is having a great summer so far!!
Please sign the guestbook and let us know you were here!!!

*****MAY 25, 2006*****
TODAY WAS NICHOLAS' PRE-K GRADUATION! IT WAS A CUTE LITTLE CEREMONY....EVEN THO NICHOLAS DECIDED TO STAND UP THERE AND BE MR. COMEDIAN INSTEAD OF SINGING THE SONGS THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO SING!! BUT ALL IN ALL IT WAS ADORABLE!!
IT WAS SAD TO SAY GOODBYE TO HIS FRIENDS AND ESPECIALLY HIS TEACHERS MRS. BRENDLE AND MRS. CAUSEY! THEY WERE BOTH GREAT, LOVING TEACHERS AND WE WILL MISS THEM. NICHOLAS WON'T BE BACK AT SOUTHPORT CHRISTIAN NEXT YEAR. WE ASKED HIM IF HE WANTED TO STAY THERE FOR KINDERGARTEN OR GO TO VWES WITH HIS LIKE HIS SISTERS....AND HE IS VERY EXCITED TO GO TO VWES....ESPECIALLY CUZ THEY HAVE A COMPUTER LAB AND CAFETERIA! OH THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WILL THRILL A CHILD. HE SAYS HE WILL MISS HIS TEACHERS AND THAT MAKES HIM SAY HE WANTS TO GO BACK TO SCS.....BUT I THINK WE WILL STAY WITH VWES!!

I PUT SOME NEW PICS IN THE PHOTO ALBUM ALSO!!!

It has been BUSY BUSY BUSY here! Nicholas' birthday party went great!! We had about 15 kids....and a bunch of adults!! Nicholas really enjoyed his NASCAR theme party!!

This is Nicholas' last week of school...so it has been a busy one! The last few months they have been learning about different countries. So today they had to come dressed as a person from their assigned country and bring a food from that country. Nicholas was picked to come as an Austrailian aborigine and he brought Meat pie (which was really good...I made it!!). My parents had gone to Austrailia a while back and brought home a boomerang so he brought that.....that could have been dangerous!! But it turned out so cute...all the kids were adorable!!

Tomorrow is field day at his school! Then Thursday is Pre-K graduation and he is sooo excited cuz that means next year he will get to go to school with his sister. He is sad that Meghan won't be at the elementary school anymore but Hannah will be there!

I don't recall if I updated about Relay but Nicholas raised $4300.00 and his team raised $14,000....too bad not much of that goes to pediatric cancer.....but it was still fun and for a great cause!!

Check out the new pics in the album and sign his guestbook to let him know you were here!!

Hope all is well!!

Love, Heather

HAPPY 5TH BIRTHDAY NICHOLAS!!!!!!! HE IS SOOOO EXCITED ABOUT HIS PARTY TOMORROW!!

NOW FOR SCAN STUFF............ALL IS CLEAR....STILL NED!!! WE HEADED TO DUKE EARLY ON WEDNSDAY AND HE HAD TO HAVE AN ECHO, ULTRASOUND, LABS AND HIS MIBG INJECTION!! THEN WE WENT TO DUKE GARDENS AND WALKED AROUND A BIT AND FED THE DUCKS. THEN FOLLOWING TRADITION WE WENT TO KANKI (AS NICHOLAS DESCRIBES IT..."THE PLACE THEY COOK ON YOUR TABLE") AFTER A BIG MEAL WE WENT BACK TO THE HOTEL FOR SOME SWIMMING!!! NICHOLAS WAS SCHEDULED FOR HIS MIBG AND CT SCAN AT 8:15AM ON THURSDAY. WELL ON WEDNSDAY NIGHT THEY CALL TO TELL US THAT HE IS SCHEDULED FOR THE SCANS BUT ANESTESIOLOGY DIDN'T HAVE HIM ON THEIR SCHEDULE. SO INSTEAD OF 8:15 (WHICH IS A GREAT TIME CUZ HE DOESN'T HAVE TO GO ALL DAY WITHOUT FOOD) HE GOT BUMPED TO 1:15. THEY SAID HE COULD EAT A SMALL AMOUNT BEFORE 7AM....BUT OF COURSE NICHOLAS WASN'T HUNGRY THEN. SO HE DIDN'T GET PUT UNDER TIL AROUND 2 YESTERDAY BUT HE WAS SUCH A TROOPER!! HE STARTED TO SAY HE WAS HUNGRY AND WE TOLD HIM HE COULDN'T EAT CUZ OF THE SLEEPY MEDICINE....SO HE WOULD TRY TO PLEAD HIS CASE AND SAY HE COULD EAT JUST A LITTLE SOMETHING!! BUT HE HELD OUT AND HAD HIS SCANS AND THEY ARE ONCE AGAIN CLEAN!!!!

TOMORROW WE ARE HAVING HIS NASCAR PARTY. HE IS REALLY EXCITED TO HAVE HIS FRIENDS AND HIS TEACHERS COME OVER!!

TONIGHT HE WANTS TO GO TO A PIZZA PLACE FOR DINNER AND THEN WE HAVE HIS SCHOOL END OF YEAR PERFORMANCE TO GO TO. WE WILL SEE IF HE PERFORMS CUZ HE IS PRETTY TIRED. WE DIDN'T GET HOME TIL 10PM LAST NIGHT!! IT SHOULD BE FUN THO!!

THAT IS ABOUT ALL FOR NOW. WE GO BACK TO DUKE IN 3 MONTHS FOR A CT....AND 6 MONTHS FOR CT/ MIBG. THEY WANT HIM TO DO THE CT WITHOUT ANY SEDATION NEXT TIME SO HE CAN DRINK THE CONTRAST. HE IS A BIT SCARED OF THE MACHINE BUT HOPEFULLY WITH THE HELP OF AN ATIVAN IT WON'T BUG HIM TOO MUCH!!!

TAKE CARE!!
HEATHER

Friday, April 28, 2006 7:52 PM CDT

Well....we are back from our trip......Florida!! What happened to Ohio? The MORNING we were suppose to go, we double checked the weather cuz it had been ify all week and everything we had planned was for outdoors. So on Wed. morning we got up bright and early and ready to hit the road....BUT it was now a BIG chance of rain for Ohio and we didn't want to drive 10 1/2 hours to sit in a hotel cuz of the weather. We then had to figure out where to go....Baltimore/ DC area was a choice....NO....RAIN. Okay let's go south to Atlanta.....NO....RAIN. We had to go FURTHER south and decided to go to Tampa, Fl. Good of place as any....we had never been there and they had a zoo, aquarium, beach....so off we went after a bit of repacking for warmer weather.

We got there LATE that night and decided the next day we would go to the zoo. It was a really nice zoo and took up most of the day. Afterwards we just hit the pool at the hotel!

The next day (Friday) Paul had decided he wanted to go up to Orlando and do one day of Disney (about all we can handle....before going crazy) So the kids picked Magic Kingdom....big surprise....that was their favorite last time! It was great...weather...not too crowded....but the best part of all was Nicholas was tall enough to ride EVERY ride there....SO NO STROLLER SWAPS!! He rode Space Mountain for the first time (he was too short last year) and HE LOVED IT!! We had to ride it a few more times. We hit every ride there.....except Stitch's great escape cuz that scared the pants off the kids last time. We did have about 40 minutes of rain but we just hit the indoor rides during that time. We even saw some of the characters but the kids had gotten to see them ALL during Nicholas' Wish trip that they were more interested in going on rides....which made mom and dad HAPPY to not have to see every single character. We only saw a few!

On Saturday we went to the Florida Aquarium in Tampa....that was also pretty fun! They had a little water park so we brought the kids bathing suits and after we saw the aquarium we let them get in their suits and have fun.

We decided to head back to Orlando....but NOT TO THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH!! We went back up to visit Give Kids the World. It was really fun to go back and remember all the fun we had there last Jan. The kids would run around and say..."oh...remember this"..."that is where we danced with Mayor Clayton"....it was really a fun trip then and so fun to go back and have their memories!! We went to the Castle of Miracles and located Nicholas' star up on the ceiling. It was really hard to clearly see them cuz they are so far up and don't turn out with the camera...even with the zoom. The hardest part about going back was thinking about the little girl and her family that we had met and still keep in touch with. Brooke had passed away in December and it just made me sad while at GKTW cuz last time we were there she was running around, dancing and waiting to visit Santa. It was hard.

We then headed home and drove til Jacksonville, Fl. and spent the night. We got home on Sunday and had to get back to the real world.

For a last minute trip....it turned out FUN!!

As far as medical news goes.....it is approaching that time again.....TIME FOR ME TO STRESS!!! Nicholas will have scans on May 10th and 11th. He is already telling me he doesn't want the circle machine (CT scan) or shots! Poor little guy!! He is so good tho when he has to go do this! Please say an extra prayer that all will be clear and no scares like last time!! Please pray that he continues to be NED.

Nicholas is counting down the days til his birthday...MAY 12th. He is excited cuz he gets to bring snack and cupcakes to school that day and then the 13th is his party. His school is having a end-of-year performance on the 12th...but that is okay. He just wants the PARTY on the 13th.

I will update after scans...THINK GOOD THOUGHTS!!

Love, Heather

Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!! Ours was nice! On Saturday we had an egg hunt at church...then had to go home and dye our eggs! Sunday we went to church and then to my brother's for dinner. The kids had an egg hunt there also. Then we did something I hadn't done since elementary school.....we played kickball. It was quite comical.

We are heading out in the morning for Ohio. We are going to Columbus to go to the big zoo they have there. Then we are going to the Paramount amusement park and to Amish country. It will be a LONG drive but thank goodness for DVD and video games!! The kids have been looking forward to this....hopefully the weather will cooraperate!

We have also been having GREAT weather so we have hit the beach a few times. We took the puppy down to see how he liked the ocean and Nicholas and Meghan ended up SOAKED (and NOT in their bathing suits) Buddy tho...he wasn't so sure of the water!! Then yesterday we threw on the suits and played down at the beach....the water is still a bit cold to swim in but they played in it a bit!!

Nicholas goes for scans in a few weeks....ugh!! I am sure all will be fine but after our scare last time I will be extra nervous! BUT HE IS FINE!!

Hope all is well with everyone!! Take care and we will update after our trip!!

Love, Heather

Thursday, April 6, 2006 7:57 AM CDT

I just sat and wrote a LONG journal entry and LOST IT ALL....so now it will be short cuz I don't feel like doing it again!!! LOL

We are FINALLY having beautiful spring weather here!! The kids are outside playing every chance they get and they are always wanting to take the dogs on a walk!! Fine by me!!

Since we are having such nice weather and the kids had last friday off (end of grading) we decided to venture down to Myrtle Beach,SC to go to Alligator Adventure. We try to do all the touristy things the kids like before the crowds hit!! They love to see the alligators and other animals they have there! They got to pet a small alligator and Nicholas gave it a hug and tried to give him a kiss but the lady got it out of the way in time!! Sweet boy!!!

Nicholas' class had a field trip yesterday to Dixie Stampede. While we were out looking at the horses...he and I were going along reading the names of the horses and what kind of horse they are! We got to one horse and before I could read the name he says "This horse's name is DOC!" His teacher Mrs. Brendall was standing there and was soooo happy that he got it without even sounding it out!! He has really come along way with his reading and will enter kindergarten reading really well I think! His teacher was soooo proud of him!!
The Dixie Stampede is similar to what Medivel Times is....watch a show and have dinner (well we had lunch). But it is southern food and a stampede instead of medivel! It was pretty interesting tho. NIcholas wasn't too woohoo about it unless there were animals out there....he didn't care much for the singing and dancing!!

In medical news....Nicholas will go for scans again in May on the 10th and 11th. He will have a CT scan, MIBG, echo and ultrasound. Since last set of scans was his one year off treatment check up....he should have had the echo then but they had forgotten to schedule it....so it will get done this time! Let's just pray that there is no "glow" this time on the MIBG...that turned out to be nothing....BUT STILL I DON"T NEED THE STRESS!!

Nicholas' birthday is May 12th so I was glad they didn't schedule it then....I would have had to change it! Can anyone guess what theme Nicholas' birthday party is going to be????? NASCAR!!! He is sooo excited for his birthday party (on the 13th) and keeps asking when he can send out his invitations!!! It's going to be a long month!!!

Hope all is well with everyone!! HAPPY SPRING!!!

Love, Heather

Hello everyone,

Just a quick update to let you know that everything is status-quo over here.

After a week where every one of us got sick (Nicholas: strep throat/ear infections, Meghan: Bronchitis, Hannah: Cold/Cough, Heather: Cold/Cough and Me: Flu Like), we are all healthy or on the mend.

We would like to thank you all for our help with the Relay For Life campaign that Heather has undertaken. So far she has been able to raise over $2,200 for Nicholas' school team, and still counting.

Please continue to pray for all of those fighting that they may be healed, for those families that have lost a child, and for those in remission or NED that they may continue to stay clean.

God bless you all and WELCOME SPRING!

Hey everyone,

Nothing much has changed here in the past couple of weeks. Meghan, Hannah and Nicholas are all doing well in school and are looking forward to the end of the school year. The weather has been unseasonably mild, and spring is just around the corner.

Health wise, Nicholas is doing great. Growing like a weed. He is very active and is enjoying school, his family and the new puppy. We didn't realize that a small, helpless puppy could be carried around by the head, but thanks to Nicholas we now know. He seems to be a fast learner for everything except doing what he is supposed to do.....boys!

We are excited for Spring Break to come. We will be heading to Columbus, Ohio to visit the big zoo there. There is an amusement park there too!

As you can see, Nicholas' background has changed to reflect NASCAR. He is a BIG fan of Tony Stewart (thanks to me!)

Anyway, we hope you are all doing well and pray daily for those children who are still fighting hard. We ask your continued prayers for our son to keep him cancer free, and also ask a special friend for our friend Ryan Brew who is battling a 2nd relapse of A.L.L. He just received another stem-cell transplant, and we pray the cell graft.

Grow Cells Grow!

God bless you all and take care.

******SCANS ARE CLEAR....NICHOLAS IS STILL NED (NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE******

Whew.....for those of you that don't know.....Nicholas had scans yesterday and for awhile there we weren't sure of the results!!! NOT FUN!!! The CT scan was fine....still clear....but the MIBG scan (the one that seeks out any neuroblastoma cells) was showing up a spot in front of his bladder!!! Not what we wanted to hear! His oncologist had to compare scans and since she was in surgery til late yesterday...she wouldn't be able to get in touch with us til today!! So, needless to say I was a mess all night wondering if he had relapsed or not!!
Paul spoke with Dr. Kreisman this morning and she had said she didn't feel that it was NB. She had seen cases where for some reason the lining in the bowel will absorb some of the radioactive stuff they inject Nicholas with the day before the scan. Plus the "glow" was curved and in front of the bladder. She felt that it was most likely bowel and she and the radiology team were going to put the CT and MIBG scans together (I guess kind of like superimposing) to see if the "glow" was indeed at the bowel. She had also said that the amount that it was glowing (it was glowing alot) she would have expected to see SOMETHING on the CT. So.....we had to wait for a definate answer for a few more hours. She called awhile ago and said she and some other Oncology doctors, the nuclear medicine and Ct radiologist all went over the scans and THEY ARE CLEAN....he is still NED!!! Big sigh of relief!!!!!
But because of this lovely scare....we were suppose to have gone down to every 6 months for scans....but he will have scans again (MIBG and CT) in 3 months just to keep an eye on things!! Which if fine with me....if it were up to us he would be scanned everytime he walked through the doorway to his room.....just have a little built in scanner and we would KNOW each and every day!!!
Thanks to everyone that said a prayer for Nicholas....relapse NB is really, really nasty stuff so that is why it is so scary!! I know he will grow up to be a wonderful man (if we can get past the nasty teenage years...lol) but I do pray that he will NOT have to fight this disease again!!
Please continue to pray for our friend RYan. He will be undergoing his second bone marrow transplant this week and he really needs our prayers!! He is an adult with a childhood cancer (he has ALL when that is mainly found in children and AML is usually found in adults) He is a great guy and he and Nicholas went through their first transplants together. NIcholas was on the 5th floor and Ryan was on the 9th...
I hope all is well with everyone and thanks again for praying for Nicholas!!
Love, Heather

Hello everyone.

There hasn't been very much to report between the 1st of the year and now, so we havn't had much case to update.

However, there are a couple of things that are happening now that we wanted you to know about.

First for the fun stuff:
1. Nicholas (and family) have a new puppy named Buddy. He is now about 10 weeks old, and a very sweet dog. He was rescued from the pound, and is a Black Lab mix, although we can't tell what the mix is yet (fingers crossed).

2. Nicholas is doing very well in school, and is the heartbreaker of the class, well as much as a pre-schooler can be. His teachers love him dearly and he gets along well with everyone. He has also progressed academically at a good rate.

Now for the other stuff:
1. Nicholas goes in for scans on Feb 8th and 9th.. Please keep him on your prayer list and pray for clean scans. He is having a CT, MIBG, Echo and Ultrasound. After this, we only have to go back to Duke every six months. Praise God for the talents and abilities of the doctors taking care of my son, and for all of you that have offered prayers in his name. Please don't stop.

2. Our friend Ryan Brew has relapsed for the second time with A.L.L. He has tumors running up and down his spine and one in particular is pressing against his spinal cord. They are now treating him with radiation to try and shrink some of them and then do chemo and another stem-cell transplant. Ryan is 28 and running out of options. Please, please pray for him and his family that they can get through this.

I guess that is about it for now. I hope everyone is doing well. Please sign our guestbook and let us know that you were here.

God Bless.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE!

We are getting the presents wrapped, the food prepared and the kid's ready for a wonderful family Christmas. We hope nothing but the same for you and your family.

Since last writing, not much has gone on other than the usual holiday madness! Nicholas got out of school last Friday and the girls got out 1/2 day today. Heather has been working hard with the holiday baking, and I have been adding up the calories!

On Monday, Nicholas, Ted Johnson (family firend) and I went to Duke to take a van load of toys to the Rainbow Day Hospital and the 5100 floor of DUMC. Toys, books, games, stuffed animals and other stuff were loaded up and hauled to a full 5100 floor and day hospital. It was a wonderful experience for Nicholas, and he was very excited to participate. He was especially thankful that he didn't need to see the doctor, but rather to visit.

The toys were donated by the residents of Winding River Plantation, where we live. Heather spearheaded her yearly toy drive, and the response was outstanding again. In addition, money from the Will Sing 4 A Cure program was used to buy additional toys and games. The music tour has been wonderful and we are looking forward to 2006.

We hope that all who read this will have a wonderful holiday this year and a safe, happy and HEALTHY New Year. For those that are fighting the beast, our continued prayers are with you and your family. May the Spirit of our Heavenly Father bless you and keep you safe.

Thank you to all that have prayed for us and Nicholas. It is very much appreciated. We ask that you continue to pray for him, as well as the other kid's fighting.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Paul, Heather, Meghan, Hannah and Nicholas Black

Merry Christmas!! I know it has been awhile since I updated...but we have been busy!! The Pre-K and 3rd grades at Nicholas' school had a feast day for Thanksgiving and it was ALL OUT....the kids all were dressed as pilgrims and indians. Those of us that helped out had to wear costumes also....ugh!! It really was a nicely done event!!
My grandparents came out from LA to spend Thanksgiving with us which was fun!! While they were here we went to the Alabama Theater for their Christmas show...check out the pic in the album...the kids got to go on stage and Nichoals sat with a lady and kept rubbing her legs! He was doing it cuz she was wearing fishnet stockings but it was so funny to see him sitting there rubbing her legs!! What a boy!! We also went to a farm that has a wonderful hayride and light display...for those back home in LA...it was like Griffith Park's show but on a hayride instead of driving through it in your car!! It was COLD that night tho!! Then we just visited with my grandparents and were sad to see them have to head home!!

Nicholas' school also had their Christmas show this past Tuesday....let's just say...Nicholas was more interested in whacking kids with his bell around his neck than to sing the songs!! I was laughing so hard I was crying...too funny! He had to stand next to his "girlfiend" Carmen and she would talk to him during it...so he kept waving his bell in her face and fanning her with it....she still wouldn't talk!! It was a cute show tho!!

Medical news....no visits to Duke til Feb when he will have his MIBG, CT scan, echo and labs. If all goes well with that set of scans (which i am sure they will) he will start only having to go every 6 months instead of 3 months....YEA!!!

On a sad note our friend BROOKE lost her battle with Wilm's tumor yesterday. Please pray that her family will be comforted through this difficult time!!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday season!! Merry Christmas!!!

Love, Heather

UPDATE...NOVEMBER 16, 2005
*****CT SCAN IS CLEAR...NICHOLAS IS STILL NED****

NICHOLAS FOUGHT THE SEDATION AND THEY HAD TO TURN UP THE GAS...SO HE HAD A PROBLEM WITH BURNING EYES AFTERWARDS!! BUT OTHER THAN THAT HE DID FINE!! HE WILL HAVE TO GO BACK UP IN FEBRUARY FOR MIBG, CT, ECHO AND ULTRASOUND SINCE THIS WILL BE ONE YEAR OFF TREATMENT!! AFTER THAT THO...IT IS EVERY 6 MONTHS FOR SCANS!! WOOHOO!!!
*****NED...CLEAR SCANS...IN CASE YOU MISSED IT THE FIRST TIME****

WELL I UPDATED YESTERDAY BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO IT!!! CB SEEMS TO BE HAVING A BIT OF PROBLEMS LATELY WITH THEIR SERVERS!!

ANYWAY...PAUL AND NICHOLAS HEADED TO DUKE TODAY FOR HIS CT SCAN!! HE SAW DR. MAEZUR AND DR. KRIESSMAN!! THEY BOTH THOUGHT HE LOOKED TERRIFIC. PAUL DIDN'T TELL ME HOW MUCH HE HAS GROWN BUT I KNOW IT HAS BEEN QUITE A BIT IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS CUZ NONE OF HIS CLOTHES WERE FITTING SO I HAD TO GO OUT AND BUY ALL NEW!!! AFTER CLINIC HE HAD TO GO DOWNSTAIRS TO PRE-OP! SINCE NICHOLAS DOES NOT LIKE THE "CIRCLE MACHINE" HE HAS TO BE KNOCKED OUT FOR IT!! WHICH IS NO FUN SINCE HE HAS TO BE NPO FOR THAT AND THE BOY LIKES TO EAT!!! I FOUND A TRICK THO... KEEP HIM UP LATE AT THE HOTEL AND FEED HIM GRANOLA BARS, GUMMIES AND LET HIM DRINK BOOST BEFORE BED AND PUT HIM DOWN AT ABOUT 10PM....OH AND TO ALSO GO TO KANKI FOR DINNER CUZ IT ENTERTAINS HIM (THEY COOK ON YOUR TABLE) AND HE EATS ALOT!! MOST OF THE TIME HE DOESN'T ASK FOR BREAKFAST AND BY THE TIME HE STARTS ASKING FOR LUNCH IT IS TIME TO GET KNOCKED OUT!!!

PLEASE KEEP HIM IN YOUR PRAYERS THAT TOMORROW'S SCANS WILL ONCE AGAIN BE NED (NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE). I WILL UPDATE WHEN WE HAVE SOME RESULTS!!!

LOVE, HEATHER

Nothing new to report!!! Nicholas got his school pics back so I thought I would put them up!! He is really loving school and behaves on MOST days!!! He is quite a character and ladies man!! He is always coming home letting me know the drama of the day!! One day he came home and said that Madison wasn't his girlfriend anymore cuz she liked Matthew...so Nicholas said he liked Carmen. That only lasted a few days and now his new "girlfriend" is Marissa. They were chasing each other around the playground hugging and kissing each other....the teachers had to tell Nicholas to stop hugging and kissing her....they are only 4!!!!!!!! Like his teacher said tho...he has a heart of gold and is very affectionate!!! Gotta love him!!!

Nicholas will go to Duke for scans on November 15 & 16th....he will just have a CT scan this time!! Please keep him in your prayers that his scans will once again be clear!! I am sure they will be!!

Hope all is well with everyone and have a safe Halloween!! We will have a witch (Meghan), Spiderman (guess who that will be?? Nicholas) and Hannah is either going to be a Diva Rock Star or a Drama Queen...and i can't tell you how fitting either of those would be for her! Personally I think the Drama Queen is her.....she wouldn't even have to dress up....she is our little drama queen 24/7!!!

Take care!!!
Love, Heather

Thursday October 6th,
The kids decided for Christmas that they wanted a new swing set!! So we got it early so they could enjoy it while it was still warm!! They absolutely LOVE it and have been on it pretty much everyday since it got put in!! They are calling it Club Wannahakalukie!! If you have seen Finding Nemo (I know we have a billion times while Nicholas was in the hospital) they had Mt. Wannahakaloogie...but we changed it since the Hawaiian alphabet does not have a G in it. We thought it was pretty funny!!
This Sat Nicholas gets to be a starter for a mini grand prix that is going on in Wilmington to benefit Duke Children's. I have been trying to get him to practice "Gentleman start your engines" so we will see how he does...if it doesn't get rained out!!!
Hope all is well!!!

Please say an extra little prayer for our friend Brooke (we met her on Nicholas' make a wish trip) she is not feeling very good right now!! She had relapsed with Wilm's tumor and is having a hard time right now with HIGH fevers and just started chemo again!! Thanks!!!

Not much new to report!! Nicholas is really loving school!!! His teachers JUST LOVE HIM...even tho he is a little stinker!! He is terrific during class time but the boy just does not want to relax during rest time!! But then again...he has never been a good napper!!! He looks forward to going everyday!!!
We had an unexpected week off of school last week due to Hurricane Ophelia!!! Or as Nicholas called her...."felia". They decided to call for a voluntary evacuation of the islands on Monday so they have to close the schools....since the high school is used as a shelter. By Tuesday it was a mandatory evacuation of the islands and a voluntary for us.....but we didn't go!!! She was only a weak category 1 and by Wens....she was here!!!! I could tell Meghan was nervous about it coming cuz her class had been studying weather and the damages by Katrina. We kept telling her that Ophelia was nothing compared to what Katrina was. Plus our house is new, it has hurricane proofed windows on most...so she was okay with that!! We never lost power during the storm and Paul (not a bright idea) would venture outside to take mesurements as we were getting TONS of rain! At one point our backyard had 10 inces of water in it!! Compared to Charley last year.....we didn't get much wind damage but we sure got LOTS of rain. Which is why the kids were out of school on Thursday and Friday!!! We live on the Lockwood Folly River and it was way over flood level. The bridge going over it on the highway was underwater...a house at the end of our cul de sac was surrounded by water and it was about 1/3 of the way up their bottom floor...which luckily was their garage. There were many docks broken off and in the middle of the river and the marina level was above the permanent docks!!! So no school for 2 more days even tho MY KIDS could get there. Nicholas actually did have school on Friday....and I sent him cuz his girlfriend was having her party on that Saturday and I needed directions!!! But the girls had another few days at home.......even tho the school is at the enterance to my neighborhood!! Oh well!!
But other than a house falling off into the beach on Ocean Isle Beach....there wasn't any MAJOR damage!!!

Paul and a few others from our church are suppose to be heading down to New Orleans this coming Friday to help with clean up. I don't know if Rita will change their plans any since they are getting flooded again as I type!! But I am proud of him for going cuz I know he is a bit nervous about it!! My brother will also be going!!! Please pray that they will have a safe trip!!

As far as medical goes....NICHOLAS IS TERRIFIC!! We will go back for scans in November. So we won't see Duke til then.

Not much else going on!! Please continue to pray for all those fighting this disease.

DON'T FORGET TO SIGN THE GUESTBOOK AND LET US KNOW YOU WERE HERE!!!

*****SCANS ARE CLEAN******

THE KIDS ARE BACK IN SCHOOL....WOOHOO!!! Summer in our household is offically over!!! The girls started back to school on the 25th which had Nicholas riproaring mad cuz he didn't start til the 30th!!! Poor boy thought he wasn't going to go to school!!! But he went to Pre-K on the 30th and is loving it...okay it has only been 2 days...but he loves it!!!! He HAD to have a Spiderman backpack and he brough his spiderman blanket for rest time!!! He also thinks it is a big thing to bring his lunch to school!! He was soooo excited to get to school and see his friends...alot of the kids from his pre-school switched over to this new school!!! He has to wear a uniform, which makes it so much easier in the mornings!!! The girls take forever picking an outfit it has to be done at night or they would be tardy!!! They were all glad to be back in school and to see their friends!! I am so glad my kids love school....makes it so much easier!!!

A few days before school started...we decided to head up to Charlotte to go to Carowinds!!! We headed up Sunday and that night Nicholas started feeling a bit warm. So we woke up Monday morning and he was still feverish....but he acted fine and so he and the girls said they still wanted to go. We had told them that if we just go home we could do it another time but if we go to the park and use our tickets and then Nicholas starts feeling bad...that would be it!!! No they all said they wanted to go...duh!!! Nicholas did fine for awhile and then about 4 hours of being there he started feeling REALLY warm and asked to go home.....so we did!!! It wasn't a great day but they did enjoy the rides they got on!!! We will just have to do it again......oh nothing really came of the fever....a bit of a cough for a day and then that was it!!! He fought whatever was trying to get him!!!!

Nicholas has been busy with his Tae Kwon Doe class and is starting to listen pretty well to the instructor. He really seems to enjoy it!!!

We have been trying to get some afternoons in at the pool before the weather starts getting too cool....plus we only have a month and a half before they close the pool for the season!!!! He loves to swim and it is great exercise for him and the girls!!!

Please keep praying for Nicholas and for those fighting this terrible disease. Please pray for all the victims of Katrina.....it is tragic to say the least!!! Lastly, please pray that Nicholas stays NED!!!

Hope all is well with everyone!!!

SCAN UPDATE....8-17-05

SCANS ARE CLEAR !!!!!!!!!

WE HEADED TO DUKE YESTERDAY AND HAD AN APPOINTMENT WITH ONCOLOGY....IT WAS VERY SAD NOT SEEING DR. BURKE.....EVEN NICHOLAS SAID HE MISSES DR. BURKE!! AFTER ALL HIS APPOINTMENT WE HEADED OVER TO THE MUSEUM OF LIFE AND SCIENCE!! NICHOLAS AND MEGHAN HAD FUN...EVEN THO WE COULD ONLY SPEND ALITTLE OVER AN HOUR THERE CUZ THEY WERE CLOSING! WE THEN WENT AND CHECKED INTO THE HOTEL AND HEADED OF TO KANKI FOR DINNER!! NICHOLAS LOVES TO WATCH THEM COOK ON YOUR TABLE AND IT IS ALOT OF FOOD THAT HE WILL EAT...SINCE HE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO EAT IN THE MORNING I HAVE TO FILL HIM UP AT NIGHT!! AFTER DINNER WE RAN TO THE STORE AND THEN TO COLD STONE CREAMERY (OUR FAVORITE) FOR SOME ICE CREAM!! WE THEN WENT SWIMMING AND THEN AT ABOUT 10 PM I HAD NICHOLAS EAT A FEW GRANOLA BARS AND DRINK A BOTTLE OF BOOST (YUMMY MILK) AS HE CALLS IT. THEN IT WAS OFF TO BED!! ALL THE FOOD AND THE BOOST REALLY HELPS HIM GO WITHOUT BREAKFAST AND HE ONLY ASKED ONCE FOR A SNACK!! SCANS WERE AT NOON SO WE HAD TO CHECK INTO PRE-OP AT 10:30....ALL WENT WELL WITH SCANS...HE WOKE UP CRANKY AS USUAL.
WE ARE SO THANKFUL AND SO BLESSED THAT HE ONCE AGAIN GOT GREAT NEWS THAT HE IS STILL NED!!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE PRAYERS SAID ON HIS BEHALF!!!!

Did I mention this is STRESS WEEK????? Next week is scans and I am always a mess beforehand......UGH!!! I am fine pretty much all the other days...but approaching scans...the stress begins!! We will head up to Duke next Tuesday the 16th for his appointment with Dr. Breitfield...who we just found out will be leaving Duke at the end of August....then he will have a pre-op appointment for his anesthesia. Then he will get his injection for the MIBG scan. Then back to Duke on Wednsday for his CT scan and MIBG. PLEASE KEEP HIM IN YOUR PRAYERS THAT HIS SCANS WILL BE CLEAN ONCE AGAIN!!!!

Other than that....all is fine here!! The girls will start school on the 25th and Nicholas will start on the 30th. He is VERY excited to be going ot Pre-K at a new school. Alot of his friends from his school last year will be in his class at this new school....so that will make it a bit easier for him! We did our school supply shopping last weekend and he had to get a Spiderman backpack....surprise??? He just couldn't wait to get it home and put it in his closet with his lunchbox. Tomorrow we will go clothes and shoe shopping!! He has to wear a uniform so he is pretty easy this year!!!

We have been having fun going to the pool...haven't hit the beach much lately....the weather hasn't been all that great!!!

Nicholas started a Tae Kwon-Do and is just loving it!! He finally got his Gi and belt on Thursday and was driving us crazy about it!! His first class he was soooo obsessed about getting a belt he bugged the teacher the whole time!! Which she is pretty strict (but seeing as it was his first time she let his talking slide a bit)we finally had to tell him if he could go 3 classes without talking too much and listen....he would get his Gi and belt!!! It is pretty funny to watch him tho. He has alot to learn.
Devin.....watch out...next time we see you...he can show you HIS moves too!!!

Paul has been doing alot of singing to raise money for the kids at Duke. When we go up this week we will bring a bunch of toys, coloring books and other things to them!!! Tonight he is singing at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach so I took the kids down to see him and go to Build a Bear to make a bunch of bears for Duke. Last time I took the girls to Build a Bear, Nicholas didn't get to go so he got to make a friend this time!! He was soooo happy to finally get to go and make his own!!!

Not much else going on. We are going to try to head out of town for a few days right before school starts. We are going to go to Charlotte to Carowinds Amusement park and waterpark. The kids are looking forward to that....they are all such daredevils!!! We went to the waterpark here a few weeks ago and Nicholas was mad cuz at first they said he couldn't ride the BIG slides....well he only missed it by a hair...so we stuck his water sandles on and he was tall enough. I would only let him go on the ones that I could ride double with him. After we would get to the bottom of the slide he would keep saying how AWSOME it was. He even did the pitch black one and loved it!! The girls were hitting all the rides....even the one that drops you STRAIGHT down.....ugh!!!

PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ALL THE KIDS THAT ARE FIGHTING THIS TERRIBLE DISEASE!!

PLEASE PRAY THAT NICHOLAS WILL HAVE CLEAN SCANS AND CONTINUE TO BE NED (NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE).

Hope all is well with everyone and that your summer has been happy and healthy!!

Love, Heather

Hello all.....

I hope everyone is having a great summer!! We have been keeping busy and having alot of fun!!!

Nicholas and I went out to Reno, NV for a week to visit my friend from high school and her family... Michelle, Chris and Devin (my godson). Paul had decided to send me for my birthday and since Nicholas and Devin are only a year apart....I figured they would have fun!! Nicholas got to go sit in the cockpit (before we took off) on both flights going out and both flights coming home. Out of all the kids going by the cockpit...he was the only one picked to go...maybe he just looked like a future pilot??? It was pretty cool for him. He kept touching all their buttons and switches....AAAHHH. I told him unless he was changing our course for Hawaii to please stop. I don't like flying to begin with and then to see him TOUCHING EVERYTHING....

While we were in Reno we got to go up to Lake Tahoe, hit 2 waterparks...one was mainly spinklers and fountains and the other was the BIG waterpark...kids loved both. We went to the children's museum, a little zoo, a lake to go swimming, and lots of playing!! Two very energetic boys!!!!! But they played really well together...even tho they hadn't seen each other in 2 years!!!

The week came to an end and it was back home for us!!! We had a great time and miss them already.

We have been going to the beach and pool alot!!! Trying to stay cool!!!!

My friend Denise came out for a few days to visit....now we are expecting Paul's brother and his family tomorrow. They will only be staying overnight...they are on their way home from my mother-in-laws.

Medically...nothing new. We are set for scans for August...he will have a CT and MIBG this time!! Pray for clean results...which I am sure they will be!!!

Please keep praying for those that are fighting this horrible disease.

Have a safe and happy summer!!!

Love, Heather

Hello,

Back to the real world!!!

We had a great trip to Duck Key, Fl. where we stayed at Hawk's Cay Resort...in our "little zilla" as Nicholas would call it!!!

We got there on Sunday the 12th and stayed til the 19th!! The kids did great on the flight down. Last time they were on a plane was about 3 years ago...so for Nicholas it was the first time he would remember!! He actually fell asleep both ways!!

Our days there consisted of getting up, having breakfast, putting on our bathing suits and going to the Pirate ship and pool. Then about lunch time we would go back to the villa and take a break...usually about an hour. Then we would hit the beach...which was really cool cuz it was a saltwater lagoon. We would rent kayaks and swim all day!! By evening the kids (and mom and dad) would be exhausted!!!! My parents were on some of the other keys the same time we were there...so we were able to go to dinner with them and Paul and my dad went for a half day fishing trip.

Right before we had left Nicholas was starting to learn to swim. While we were there he improved even more!!! Now he thinks he doesn't have to have his floaties on....but he knows unless I am in the water with him...he has to have them on!! He isn't THAT good yet!! But he takes after me...a natural...lol!! He really did amaze me how quick he picked it up!!!!! Watch out swimming world...Olympics...we can wish!!!

We drove down to Key West one day and the kids got a kick out of the 7 mile bridge!! We also went to a place where you can feed Tarpins....REALLY BIG FISH!!! They thought that was cool too!!!

It was just a really nice time to spend together!!!

On the 14th Nicholas had his 1 year post transplant anniversary!! Wow...time flies!! I can't believe he has been out of transplant a whole year already!!!

Nicholas is really doing well and is ALL BOY!!! He defiately keeps me on my toes!!! He doesn't have to go back to Duke til August for scans!! It will be weird going this time cuz we won't see Dr. Burke!! We will really miss her and the hospital she is going to in Ohio is VERY LUCKY!!!!! She is a wonderful doctor!!!

Nicholas and I will head out next week to go to Reno to see my friend and her family!!! Nicholas is really excited to get to go on another plane and to see Devin.

That is pretty much all for now!! Keeping busy hitting the beach and pool.....my coppertone babies!!!

Please continue to pray for those fighting this disease!! Please pray that Nicholas remains NED!!! Hope all is well with everyone and have a great summer!!!

Love, Heather

We are just about to leave on our vacation to Duck Key, Fl...but I realized I hadn't updated in awhile (Paul had). On June 6th of last year we were entering the world of Stem Cell Transplant at Duke!! It was a really scary time with not knowing WHAT to expect....so I entered expecting it to be awful...which it was...but not as awful as I had thought!!! We started our journey into the unknown on June 6th. He had 4 days of INTENSE OBLITERATIVE CHEMO....which he did surprisingly well with. Then he had a day off and on JUNE 14th he recieved his own stem cells back!! So almost one year ago he had his transplant. Wow...what a difference a year makes!!!
Nicholas entered stem cell NED which was to his advantage!! He did pretty well with it but I still remember when the mucositis hit...and it hit hard...I thought...what is this poor boy going through!! Having to be on morphine...mouth sores...the amount of mucous that he was throwing up.....but ya know what?? He didn't have it so bad...compared to some kids...and I know that it was because of all the prayers and blessings he recieved that he made it through without any complications!!
Now he is a very active little boy and I am so thankful for that!!!
We have been spending alot of time at the beach and pool...and he doesn't stop!!!! Energizer bunny!! The other day I took off his floaties in the pool and HE SWAM....pretty much the first try. Now I have to fight him to get his floaties on if I'm not in the pool!!! He is amazing!!!
Today is Hannah's 7th birthday!!! Although I think she is turning 18...she is so mature for a 7 year old!!!
Well I am being told it is time to go. Our flight is EARLY in the morning so we are heading up to Raliegh to stay at a hotel so we don't have to get up AS EARLY!!!!
Please keep praying for those still battling this beast!! Please continue to pray that Nicholas stays NED!!!!
Our little friend, Brooke, is doing better. She just had her 1st round of chemo and got a fever so back to the hospital she went. Her birthday was on Thursday and she was able to get out of the hospital and get home. Her site is ne/brooke!!!
Hope all is well!!!
Love, Heather

Hello everyone!

Nicholas has continued to do well, and we are so thankful for his progress. My sister-in-law commented the other day that to look at him you would never know that he ever had cancer. We'll take that!

Last week marked the end of the school year for Nicholas, Meghan and Hannah, and we are looking forward to a great family trip to the Florida Keys next week. The kid's deserve it after such a great year in school. Meghan finished the year with a straight A report card, and received several awards at school. Hannah finished with an above average report card (they use numbers for her grade) and was one of the highest level readers in the 1st grade. And Nicholas finished his year with joy and excitement, leaving an indelible impression on his teachers.

I don't write this to brag about them, but yet I do. Last year at this time we were getting ready for a stem-cell transplant, uncertain of what the future would hold. To see where my children have come from this point is simply a testimony of the resolve and determination that is in each of them. All three stayed focused and concentrated on what they needed to do, and performed above any expectation that I could ever have. As a father, I couldn't be more proud of each of their accomplishments.

As we continually thank Heavenly Father for our blessings, we cannot forget those who are still fighting for every breath. We pray for them, and ask that you do the same. As a family we have a living testimony of the power of prayer, and encourage you to please offer a prayer for those children that have cancer.

Well, I guess that's it for now. Here's hoping that everyone has a great summer!

*****CLEAR SCANS 5/11/05*******

HELLO,

NICHOLAS HAD A GREAT BIRTHDAY!!! BETTER THAN LAST YEAR WHEN HE WAS UP AT DUKE GETTING OUTPATIENT CHEMO!!!!
HE HAD A WONDERFUL PARTY ON SATURDAY!! WE HAD 15 KIDS COME CELEBRATE WITH HIM!! WE HAD RENTED A BOUNCER THAT DECIDED TO NOT WORK!!! JUST WHAT WE NEEDED!!! LUCKILY, ONE OF HIS FRIEND'S DAD WAS ABLE TO FIX IT!!! THEN SPIDERMAN CAME...ORIGINALLY OUR BABYSITTER WAS SUPPOSE TO COME DRESSED AS SPIDERMAN...CUZ HE IS TALL AND SKINNY...BUT THE COSTUME WOULDN'T FIT!!!!!! SO, HIS BROTHER, WILL, VOLUNTEERED TO DO IT!! THE PROBLEM IS THAT NICHOLAS GUESSED RIGHT AWAY THAT IT WASN'T REALLY SPIDERMAN...BUT IT WAS WILL....HE IS TOO SMART! WE KEPT TRYING TO CONVINCE HIM THAT IT WAS SPIDERMAN AND WE WEREN'T SURE IF HE EVER REALLY BELIEVED US...BUT HE ENJOYED IT ANYWAYS. THE NEXT MORNING HE WOKE UP AND TOLD US ONCE AGAIN THAT WILL WAS SPIDERMAN...OH WELL.

NICHOLAS WON'T HAVE TO GO BACK TO DUKE FOR SCANS AGAIN FOR ANOTHER 3 MONTHS....YEAH!!!! THIS NEXT TIME HE WILL BE DUE FOR THE MIBG AND A CT SCAN! THIS PAST TIME UP WAS OUR LAST TIME WE WOULD SEE DR. BURKE!! HER FELLOWSHIP IS UP AND SHE WILL BE HEADING OFF TO CINCINATTI!! WE WILL MISS SEEING HER AND SHE WAS A WONDERFUL DOCTOR!! NICHOLAS WILL NOW BE SEEN BY DR. BRIETFIELD...WHO WE ALSO REALLY LIKE!!

NICHOLAS FINISHES SCHOOL TOMORROW. THE GIRLS AREN'T OUT TIL THE 3RD. NEXT YEAR WE DECIDED TO PUT HIM IN SOUTHPORT CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FOR PRE-K. HALF OF HIS CLASS FROM HIS SCHOOL NOW ARE TRANSFERRING OVER TO THIS SCHOOL...SO HE WILL AT LEAST KNOW SOME KIDS!! I JUST FIGURED WITH HIM MISSING A WHOLE YEAR, BASICALLY, OF SCHOOL...HE NEEDED A BIT MORE ACADEMICS THAN SOCIAL. HE WILL STILL GET LOTS OF PLAYTIME...BUT THEY ARE MORE STRUCTURED!! GET HIM READY FOR ALL DAY KINDERGARTEN!!! WE WILL DEFINATELY MISS MS. TIFFANI AND MRS. BEVERLY....AND THE THINKING CHAIR!!!

WE HAD MET A FAMILY ON OUR MAKE A WISH TRIP AND THEIR LITTLE GIRL, BROOKE, HAD BILATERAL WILM'S TUMOR. SHE HAD ONE KIDNEY REMOVED AND MOST OF THE OTHER. SHE WAS IN REMISSION AND THIS WEEK SHE HAD TO HAVE SCANS BECAUSE OF HEADACHES. THEY FOUND A LARGE GUMBALL SIZED TUMOR IN HER SKULL (THEY AREN'T SURE YET IF IT HAS INVADED HER BRAIN) SHE WENT IN FOR A BIOPSY TODAY. PLEASE KEEP HER AND HER FAMILY IN YOUR PRAYERS. HER SITE IS CARINGBRIDGE.ORG/NE/BROOKE.

NOT MUCH ELSE REALLY GOING ON HERE!! JUST THANKFUL THAT NICHOLAS' SCANS WERE CLEAR AND THAT HE IS A VERY (AND I MEAN VERY) ACTIVE LITTLE BOY!!

PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE STILL BATTLING THIS BEAST AND THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!

PLEASE SIGN THE GUESTBOOK AND LET US KNOW YOU WERE HERE!!!

LOVE, HEATHER

HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY NICHOLAS!!!!!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE NICHOLAS IS 4!!! LAST YEAR THIS TIME HE WAS SPENDING HIS BIRTHDAY AT DUKE GETTING OUTPATIENT CHEMO!!! SO WE ARE VERY GLAD THIS YEAR...NOT ONLY IS HE HOME FOR HIS BIRTHDAY BUT THAT THE CT SCAN CAME BACK CLEAR!!!!! THAT IN ITSELF IS A GREAT BIRTHDAY PRESENT....OKAY MAYBE NOT FOR A FOUR YEAR OLD WHO ACTUALLY WANTS EVERYTHING HE SEES ON TV....BUT FOR MOM AND DAD...IT IS WONDERFUL!!!

Hello everyone!

I am sure that Heather is going to update this page in more detail, but I just wanted to let you know that Nicholas had scans this morning, and everything is CLEAR!

As I am sure you can imagine, we are so very thankful. Dr. Burke, who Nicholas visited for the last time, said that he looks great and is doing "fantastic." So, I am sure that she knows what she is talking about.

At any rate, please continue to pray for those facing this beast that they will recover, and that one day it won't exist.

Thank you all for your love, support, prayers and kind words.

Wow...what a crazy weekend we had!!! Friday night was Relay for Life....the weather was horrible...cold and drizzly!!! We went out to do the survivor walk and Nicholas was a crack up!! They wanted all the survivors to walk behind the banner....but Nicholas and Hannah (the litlte girl he was in the commercial with) had other plans!!! The two of them took off when they said "survivors start walking" and they RAN the whole track!!!! Then Nicholas continued to RUN another whole lap. He even lapped the group of survivors!!! He stopped very little...occasionally to see if I was still following him....at a much slower pace....but he had everyone cracking up!!! Hey.....much better than last year when we pretty much had to carry him. So I was thrilled to see him SO full of energy. He ended up running a total of 2 1/2 laps...then I had to carry him the last half! My junior women's group had a tent set up...so we ate and then they had a bag for Nicholas. It had his name monogramed on it and stuffed full of pajamas, coloring books, crayons, view master....and a bunch of other things!! He absolutely loved it and rolled it out to the car and had to have it at the end of his bed that night!!! He even took it to school today to show his teacher!!! They were really sweet to get him that!!!

Saturday morning started off EARLY!!! We headed out at 6:30 to get to Duke for their Rainbow of Heroes Walk. Thanks again to all those that donated in Nicholas' honor!!! We got to Duke around 9:45 and first person we ran into was Nicholas' best buddy from transplant, Connie. We also got to see "Bubble Dr." well that is what Nicholas would call him cuz everytime he would come see Nicholas when he was in transplant he would have a little thing of bubbles for Nicholas...otherwise Nicholas didn't want to have anything to do with him...his name is actually Dr. Beam...great dr!!!! We then headed out to put up Nicholas' picture and story on the Wall of Heroes. They had tons for the kids to do!! Lots of characters walking around, booths for face painting, making instruments and a giant inflatable slide, bouncer and maze!!! The kids just loved it!! The walk started at 11:15 and we all carried balloons. We (well I) walked 13 laps...which equals 5200 yards. 5200 is the PBMT unit...so they walk that in honor or memory of all the kids transplanted this past year. I think I counted 96 names of kids transplanted!!! Unfortunatly not all made it and there were many people there with "in memory" on their shirts. It was a very emotional day. Here we looked at our son who is a SURVIVOR (and will remain one)...yet so many people there were there to do the walk in memory of someone they lost!!! There are so many kids we met that have lost their battle and you feel bad but at the same time THRILLED cuz your child has beaten the monster...hard to explain!!!
After the walk was over...everyone gathered in the middle of the track and after a few awards and stuff....they started playing that version of Somewhere over the Rainbow (the one that they played when Dr. Greene died on ER...yes I know) and we all relased our balloons. It was a beautiful sight!!! I believe the walk raised $140,000 for the PBMT family support services!!! WOW!!!!

After the walk we headed over to the hospital to deliver 50 totes of toys (one for each child in 5100 and 5200) quilts, pillowcases and snacks for the familes of 5200....cuz hospital food get OLD real quick!!! The quilts and pillow cases were sewn by my mom and the quilts were done by ladies at our church. The bags were from Paul's fundraiser for Duke. It was great to see some of the nurses and nurses aides!!! There is one nurses aide that would always call Nicholas....Nick- Nick. If she didn't make him smile when she came in for vitals...she at least made me smile. She was a sweetheart. SO we got to see her...we hadn't seen her for a few months!!!!
By the time we made it home......WE WERE EXHAUSTED!!!!!

Yesterday was Mother's day. The kids brought me breakfast in bed!! Very colorful waffles....I think they sprinkled every bit of cake decorating stuff I had on it...plus they were red!! Well Nicholas decided to sit in bed with me and eat ALL the waffles....that was okay cuz they were a bit much for me!!! Then last night I had my grandma up for dinner. My parent's were out of town so we will have dinner with them next weekend!!!

Tomorrow it is back up to Durham!! Nicholas and I will head up in the evening and stay overnight. He has pre-op at 9:45 and his scans are at 12:00. I really don't know how he will react to even going there so soon after freaking out last week!!! Please pray that he will not only have clear scan but that he will be calm. Once they get that sedative in him...no problem...it is just leading up to it!!

Thursday is Nicholas' 4th BIRTHDAY>>>>YEA!!!!! He is soooo excited about his party on Sat!!!

I hope all is well with everyone!!!

Well....Yesterday was an interesting day to say the least!!! We got to Duke and checked into clinic. The nurses just LOVED Nicholas and how big he is getting!! They thought he was adorable (but he is isn't he...lol) He wasn't real thrilled when they had to start an IV tho.....he was NOT A HAPPY BOY!!! After that it was down to CT...he drank his contrast with no problem. Then it was time for the scan....and Nicholas was going to have NONE OF THAT!!! The poor boy just freaked out!! He was soooo scared and didn't want to lie on the table or "go in the circle machine" so needless to say....he did not have the scan done. They couldn't give him any sedation because he had eaten. They rescheduled for next wednesday (11th) and he will have it done with sedation.
He saw Dr. Burke and she checked him out and pressed on his belly. She thought he looked great and his labs were all perfect!!!!
It is very stressful leading up to scans....even tho I know he is NED....there is always that part in the back of your mind that says "what if"....so I was a bit upset that we didn't get them done yesterday. But after seeing Dr. Burke and talking with her....both Paul and I are very confident and reassured that he remains a very happy, normal almost 4 year old!! As Nicholas' teacher says...he is WIDE OPEN!!! But I wouldn't have it any other way!!!
Please keep him in your prayers that NEXT week's scan will be clear!!! Least this time they will knock him out!!!!
We look forward to doing Relay for Life this Friday and the Rainbow of Heroes walk on Saturday up at Duke. We got to see alot of his nurses yesterday but hope to see some of his transplant nurses on Sat.
Have a great week and hope all is well with everyone!!!!

Love, Heather

Hello,

Not too much new going on here!! We got a call last night from the lady that is in charge of our county Relay for Life. She asked if we could have Nicholas to the ABC studio by 10am today to film a commercial for the Relay!! We weren't sure if he would make it cuz he has been sick (he had a lower Resp. infection and ear infections) but he was doing better and decided it was a great opportunity for him. So my mom and I took him up there today and he actually did pretty good. All he had to do was stand there and smile while Chris, the weather man and host of this year's Relay, read the script....for those of you who know Nicholas....HE DOESN'T SIT STILL FOR VERY LONG!!! He was wild before they started so I was concerned that he wouldn't cooraperate...but he surprised us. It will begin airing this week and run til Relay.

Nicholas' next scans are scheduled for May 3rd. He only has to have a CT scan this time....so hopefully he will do okay. We will do it without sedation since it is a relatively short scan. Please pray for him that they will be clear and he will remain NED!!! I am sure he will!!!

He is getting VERY EXCITED about his birthday coming up on May 12th!!!! He is having a spiderman party!! Spiderman will be visiting his party...so he should be surprised about that!!!

I hope all is going well with everyone. There is still time if you would like to donate for the Rainbow of Heroes Walk....click on the link below and designate Team Nicholas. Thanks!!!!

Happy Spring.....today it was 78 and beautiful out!! Now we just have to deal with the tourists starting to hit the beach!!!

We had a great Easter....a bit different but nice. We woke up and let the kids find their baskets and threw them in the car for the long drive up to Paul's mom's house in Rehobeth Beach, De. It is about a 8 hour drive and we wanted to get up there by dinner. Thank goodness for DVD players in the car. We got up there and the kids had an egg hunt that the Easter Bunny left for them there at grandma Black's house. We stayed there til Tuesday morning when we got up and headed into Washington DC...along with everyone else on Spring Break!!!! It is only about a 2 hour drive into the city. We were only staying til Thursday morning....so we had alot to do. I had wanted to see the cherry blossom in bloom...but they weren't quite out all the way. It has been years since I was there during full bloom and wanted to kids to see how pretty it was....next time!!! We saw all the main monuments, went to the Natural History Museum...which the kids loved...then to the Air and Space Museum. We saw the White House, Supreme Court, Library of Congress...and did ALOT OF WALKING!!!! Nicholas loved riding the metro....I think that excited him more than anything!!! We had nice weather the days we were in DC.

Then it was back to school for all!! Nicholas was sooo excited to get back to see Ms. Tiffany and all his friends!!!

The weather here has been wonderful so we have been outside alot...starting early on those tans!!! Kidding!!!! The kids love being out tho!!!

Medically...nothing new! He seems to be doing GREAT and is scheduled for a CT scan on May 3. So we will be heading up to Durham to see his doctors and say goodbye to one of his main Drs that we just love!!

We then have to head back to Durham on May 7th for the Duke Rainbow of Heroes Walk that honors all those that have been transplanted this past year. We are going to be walking as Team Nicholas Black....I know...real original. It benefits the families and patients going though bone/stem cell transplants!! If you are interested in making a donation to Team Nicholas....clink on the link below (hope it works) and make sure you designate it for Nicholas.

We are also attending the Relay for Life here. Nicholas will get to walk again in the survivor lap and my Junior Women's group will have a team. Unfortuantely I won't get to really walk with them because of having to get to Duke the next day!!! It should be a great event!!!

Please continue to keep Nicholas in your prayers that he remains NED and remember those in need of healing or comfort!!!

THANKS FOR CHECKING IN ON NICHOLAS AND REMEMBER TO SIGN THE GUESTBOOK SO WE KNOW WHO VISITED!!!

IT IS FINALLY FEELING LIKE SPRING!!!!!!!!!! Today it is beautiful out and we have been playing out all day!!! The kids are now officially on spring break!! Nicholas had an Easter party at school today and they had an egg hunt in the park!! He had alot of fun except he wasn't happy that some kids got more eggs than him....so what is a boy to do?? Follow behind the girls and sneak an egg out of their bucket...yup....that's my son!!! Of course then there is mommy chasing him and taking eggs out of HIS bucket and putting them back into the appropriate buckets!!!! So then when he realized he wasn't going to get away with that...he decided to sweet talk some eggs out of some girls....THAT WORKED!!!! It was sooooo funny to watch tho!

After school we met up with my friend and her son...Kimberly and Teddy and took the boys to McDonalds and then to the park. After about 2 hours at the park it was time to head home to get the girls from school. Hannah and the whole 1st grade had a picinic today (perfect day for it) and an egg hunt and Meghan's class played a game and got eggs as the prizes...so needless to say...WE HAVE LOTS OF EGGS AND LOTS OF CANDY...not good for someone on a diet!! Oh well!!!

No much planned for spring break yet! We were going to go camping but the weather is not suppose to be all that warm at night and sleeping in a tent when it is cold is NOT my idea of a good time. I would like to take the kids up to D.C. for a few days....so we will see! Nothing like waiting til the last minute. I just hope the weather gives us a few nice days (we have rain coming this weekend) so we can go play at the beach.

Update on those following Jared....he is out of PICU!!!!!! He is still in the hospital but I guess doing much better!!

Nothing else really exciting going on! Nicholas is staying very active and has avoided the dreaded colds going around...knock on wood!! Paul and I got a touch of colds but the kids have avoided it.....thank goodness!

Hope all is well with everyone and continue to pray for Nichoals to stay NED, please!!

*****Update on Jared**** Believe it or not they found out what caused him to have a stroke.....Cat Scratch Fever. His cat bit him right after he got hime from Duke and since he had a compromised immune system it affected him more than it normally would!!!! He is doing better tho. Please pray for a full recovery!!!
Ava and her family will be going up to NYC to Sloan to see what protocol they will follow due to her relapse!!! Please pray for them!!! Relapses in NB are hard...hopefully since hers is trace amounts it will be easier to get rid of!!!!!

Hello,
Not much new or exciting going on around here!! We have had some nice weather and then it turns COLD again. I am READY FOR SPRING!!!!
On Saturday I took the kids to Lake Waccamaw to go on a nature hike. We walked down to the lake and then did a .75 little trail...which was just enough for Nicholas. By the end I had to carry him for a bit and he is not light!!! Hannah and Nicholas decided to see what "nature" things they could discover. Nicholas decided to stock up on the rocks and load them up in his pockets!! We were walking back to the car when Nicholas' pants ended up falling down to his ankles.....I think he had a few too many rocks in the pockets!!! It really was funny!!! As we were walking it started getting windy and the clouds rolled in. By the time we got back to the car it started POURING!!! We had planned on doing another little trail...but that will have to be another trip I guess!!!
Monday ended up being gorgeous and near 70. So my friend, Amy and her son AJ came with me to pick Nicholas up from school and we took them to...ugh..McDonalds and then to the zoo. It is a little zoo but pretty well maintained....plus the kids just love it!! Nicholas and AJ had a blast!! Everytime Nicholas would walk by the camel's pen it would grunt and make noises at Nicholas. He soon became Nicholas' favorite animal. He even fed it a girl scout cookie....luckily no one else saw!!! He also really liked the tigers...they had a 6 month old tiger that he wanted to take home!! For awhile Nicholas and AJ were more interested in the cat and dogs that were there.....ummm...we have those at home!!!!!
Nicholas is still enjoying his days at school!!! He has started telling all his friends that he is having a Spiderman party....his birthday isn't til May...but I guess he wants to give them enough time to pick the perfect gift...lol We set a date for his party already and I booked a bouncer. What a diffence a year makes...last year he was getting outpatient chemo and recovering from surgery on hid birthday and preparing for transplant. So last year he didn't really get a big party!!!
Relay for Life is coming up and Nicholas will get to walk to survivor lap again this year. My junior women's club asked me to speak at next month's meeting about our experiences of the past year and a half!!! I am not real fond of speaking in public but I told them I would do my best!!! It is still hard to talk about certain things without getting too emotional...so it may be short.
Our friend Jared is still in the hospital. He ended up having to have a tracheotomy done because of problems trying to take him off the ventilator. They also did a brain biopsy to see what is going on. So please keep him in your prayers for a full recovery!!!!
I hope all is well with everyone!!! Please continue to keep Nicholas in your prayers that he will remain NED (no evidence of disease)...which I am sure he will!!! He is such an energetic, happy boy you would never have guessed he was a cancer kid!!! Luckily our lives are returning to normal and that horrid disease will stay out of our lives!!!

PLEASE SIGN OUR GUESTBOOK SO WE KNOW WHO VISITED US!!! THANKS!!!!

Hello,
Not much new around here! Just staying busy with the kids school, dance and music!! We signed Nicholas up for T-ball and WOW is he excited to play!!! Meghan will be playing softball and she too is excited!! Nicholas now walks around the house pretending to swing a bat and telling me he is practicing!!!
Last Sunday when we went to church we were able to see a friend of ours that we haven't seen for awhile Ryan, 26. He was up at Duke the same time as Nicholas fighting ALL and he was in the adult transplant unit there the same time Nicholas was getting his stem cell transplant. Ryan looked good and he was so happy to see Nicholas looking good and with hair..lol It was a very touching day to see the 2 of them together...both beating this horrible disease and getting stronger everyday!!!! Ryan had a bit of a setback with Graft Vs. Host this week but hopefully they will get that under control and he will once again be on the way to recovery. I hope to see them this next week at church and I want to get a picture of them together. He sat with us during church and just played with Nicholas and well...it was just very cool!!!
The kids are off of school today and it is RAINING...figures. So they are going crazy...which in turn makes me crazy.
I finally found out when Nicholas will have to be back at Duke......NOT UNTIL MAY!!!! Woo hoo!!! He will have to have a CT scan at that visit and then 3 months from then he will have another MIBG and CT scan. Dr. Burke said in her email...he would have to be seen every 3 months for the 1st year off Accutane with scans...then every 6 months til he is 5, then every year...basically forever!!! But hey....better safe than sorry. But she thought he was doing great!! So do we!!!!
Paul's Will Sing 4 a Cure shows are doing pretty well. When we go back to Duke in May we hope to be bringing alot of stuff for the kids up there. Proceeds from what he gets at the shows go to getting stuff for the kids and families to help the hospital stay a little easier!!! He is getting busy and booking alot of shows!! He will also be singing at Relay for Life this year and he will most likely be singing at the Rainbow Walk for Heros up at Duke...that benefits the PBMT unit and Nicholas' name will be on the shirts this year since he was transplanted this past year. But you can check out Paul's website from the link below!!
Hope all is well with everyone and please continue to pray for Nicholas to remain cancer free and keep those that are fighting this monster in your prayers!!!
Love, Heather

Hello All....

There isn't too much new to report since last update....except SCANS ARE CLEAR....still such a relief!!!
Nicholas is enjoying school and looks forward to seeing his friends everyday!!! He comes home pretty tired and will even take an occasional nap...yea!!!!

A boy we were on 5200 with, Jared 13, is back in the hospital! He found out last week that he is CANCER FREE...but on sunday was having symptoms of a stroke. They rushed him to the hospital and indeed it seemed to be that he was having a stroke!!!! He is now in PICU on life support and needs all the prayers he can get!!! This kid had to stay A LONG TIME on the transplant unit and didn't complain....now this!!! He is a fighter!!

Another little boy, Peyton, that we were on the unit with also needs prayers. He too had his scans last week. His MIBG came back clear but they saw a spot on the CT scan that they aren't sure about. It could be scar tissue but since it grew a bit since his last scans...it has the doctors concerned and his parents scared. He too had neuroblastoma...but his was on his kidney. He will have scans again in a few weeks!!!

Enough sad news....

I got Nicholas' hair cut today and he looks sooooo cute!!! I will post a pic soon!!!
Paul and I are going to the Teddy Bear Ball on the 18th!! It should be fun!! It benefits Duke Children's and Children's Miracle Network!!

Well need to go get kids in bed!!! Hope all is well with everyone and please continue to keep Nicholas in your prayers that he will remain in remission. Also, please keep those in need and fighting their own battle in your prayers!!!
DON'T FORGET TO SIGN NICHOLAS' GUESTBOOK IF YOU WOULD LIKE!! I HAVE BEEN PRINTING THEM OUT AND SAVING THEM IN A BOOK...SO WHEN HE GETS OLDER HE WILL SEE HOW LOVED HE IS AND HOW MUCH SUPPORT HE HAD DURING THIS!!!
Love, Heather

Good morning folk's!

I just wanted to update you on Nicholas and his journey to Duke this week.

Heather, Suzanne and Nicholas went to Duke yesterday for his scans, which will be taking place this afternoon. He had to have a chest X-Ray done because of some coughing that he was having. The Dr's wanted to make sure that it was OK to sedate him. The films came back negative, so all is proceeding as planned.

He will be having his CAT scan first, followed by the MIBG. Hopefully we will get some preliminary results today. We are very positive that he is clean, but the stress stinks!

On Wednesday a news team from WECT TV6 in Wilmington came to visit us to do an interview about Nicholas and the music tour that we have started. They were here for two hours! He showed them everything, his yellow car, his room, his dogs, his swingset and anything else he could get their attention on. It was a great experience, and the report was broadcast 6 times yesterday and they put excerpts of it on the wect.com website!

Also, today is the last day for ACCUTANE! 6 months of that stuff.

Nicholas shouldn't have to be back to the Dr's until May or June. That will be the longest that he has gone since diagnosis. Heather and I aren't going to know what to do with all of this extra time.

Anyway, please keep us in your prayer as we do you. We appreciate all of the support that we have received and love you all.

Thanks.

Paul

WE'RE BACK!! WE HAD A GREAT TIME ON NICHOLAS' MAKE A WISH TRIP TO DISNEYWORLD. WE GOT DOWN THERE ON SUNDAY THE 17TH AND STAYED AT THE DOLPHIN HOTEL. IT WAS REALLY FUN!! THEN WE CHECKED INTO GIVE KIDS THE WORLD ON MONDAY. WOW...WHAT AN AMAZING PLACE. WE HAD A 2 BEDROOM 2 BATH VILLA AND IT WAS HUGE!! WE HAD A KITCHEN, LIVING ROOM AND A BREAKFAST NOOK!! WE SPENT MONDAY JUST AROUND GKTW. THEY HAVE A CASTLE OF MIRACLES WHICH HAS A CAROSEL THAT LOOKS LIKE A GIANT MUSHROOM, A PLAYROOM, A MAGIC WISHING WELL AND TONS OF OTHER STUFF. THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE WAS WERE WE COULD GET BREAKFAST AND DINNER. IT WAS REALLY CUTE!! THEN THERE WAS AN ICE CREAM PALACE THAT WAS OPEN AT 7:30AM TIL 9PM. THEY HAD A MOVIE THEATER AND THE AMBERVILLE TRAIN STATION. THERE YOU COULD PLAY MINI GOLF, PLAY ARCADE GAMES OR TAKE A TRIP ON THE TRAIN. THE KIDS THOUGHT IT WAS NEAT THAT THE ARCADE GAMES WERE FREE. HANNAH KEPT ASKING IF SHE COULD HAVE SOME QUARTERS AND I HAD TO KEEP REMINDING HER THAT IT WAS FREE. EVERYTHING WAS!!

THE VOLUNTEERS THERE ARE AMAZING. SO GENUINLY NICE AND CARING!! THEY REALLY MADE A BIG FUSS OVER THE KIDS...ALL THE KIDS NOT JUST THE WISH KIDS. IT MADE YOU FEEL VERY GOOD TO SEE PEOPLE LIKE THAT.

ON TUESDAY WE HIT THE MAGIC KINGDOM AND HAD A BLAST. NICHOLAS GOT A PASS THAT GOT US ALL TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE FOR EVERYTHING!! THEY WERE SO SPOILED!! THEY EVEN GOT TO GO TO THE FRONT TO MEET THE CHARACTERS. THEY WOULD ACTUALLY CLEAR THE ROOM SO NICHOLAS AND THE GIRLS WOULD HAVE THE CHARACTERS FULL ATTENTION!! IT WAS PRETTY COOL!! NICHOLAS IS QUITE A DARE DEVIL. HE TRIED ALL SORTS OF RIDES. SPLASH MOUNTAIN, BIG THUNDER MOUNTAIN...ANYTHING HE WAS TALL ENOUGH TO DO...HE DID IT.

ON WED. WE WENT TO SEA WORLD. THAT WAS ALOT OF FUN BUT THE KIDS WANTED THE RIDES.

THURSDAY WE WENT TO MGM STUDIOS AND EPCOT. NICHOLAS JUST LOVED TEST TRACK AT EPCOT. WE HAD TO RIDE THAT A FEW TIMES. THE GIRLS LOVED TOWER OF TERROR AND ROCK-N-ROLLER COASTER AT MGM.

FRIDAY THEY DECIDED THEY WANTED TO GO BACK TO MAGIC KINGDON...AND IT WAS A GORGEOUS DAY. IT HAD BEEN A BIT COOL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK...BUT IT WARMED UP NICELY. WE HIT ALL THE RIDES AGAIN....AND I MEAN ALL.

SATURDAY WE WENT TO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS AND ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE. MEGHAN AND I RODE THE HULK...NICHOLAS WAS BUMMED CUZ HE WAS WAY TOO SHORT TO GO ON IT. SO HE KEPT TELLING US...WHEN I GET BIGGER!!! HE LOVED SPIDERMAN THO. HE WAS SOOO EXCITED TO MEET HIM.

EVERY DAY AFTER YOU WOULD COME BACK TO GKTW THEY WOULD HAVE SOMETHING FUN GOING ON THERE TOO. SO IT ENDED UP BEING TIRING LONG DAYS!! ONE NIGHT SHAMU AND MAYOR CLAYTON AND MRS MERRY (MAYOR CLAYTON IS A GIANT BUNNY AND IS MAYOR OF GKTW) HAD A POOL PARTY AND WE DANCED WITH THEM. BY THE END OF THAT NIGHT THE KIDS WERE EXHAUSTED!! THEN ANOTHER NIGHT WAS CHRISTMAS EVE AND SANTA AND MRS. CLAUSE CAME AND GAVE ALL THE KIDS TOYS. ONE MORNING MICKEY, MINNIE, GOOFY AND PLUTO CAME TO GKTW AND WE GOT TO HAVE OUR PICS TAKEN WITH THEM.

THERE IS SOOOO MUCH I COULD TALK ABOUT WITH THIS PLACE. WE WERE PRETTY TIRED BY THE END OF OUR TRIP. WE ACTAULLY HAD ONE MORE DAY AT UNIVERSAL BUT WE WERE TOO TIRED TO GO SO WE CAME HOME.

IT IS AN AMAZING PLACE AND ONE WE WILL NEVER FORGET. NICHOLAS HAS A STAR UP ON THE CEILING OF THE CASTLE OF MIRACLES. IT WILL STAY THERE FOREVER. WE MEET SOME REALLY NICE FAMILIES AND SOME GREAT KIDS!! IT WAS SO NICE TO SEE THEM ALL HAVING A GREAT TIME CUZ OF ALL THEY HAD TO GO THROUGH THEY CERTAINLY DESERVED IT!!!

I HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH EVERYONE AND KEEP PRAYING FOR THOSE IN NEED.
NICHOLAS WILL HAVE HIS SCANS AT THE END OF NEXT WEEK...PLEASE SAY A PRAYER THAT THEY REMAIN CLEAN...I AM SURE THEY ARE BUT IT IS INCREDIBLY STRESSFUL BEFORE SCANS!!

TAKE CARE AND CHECK OUT THE PICS!!
LOVE, HEATHER

Thursday, January 13, 2005 7:45 AM CST

HELLO,
WE WENT TO DUKE ON TUESDAY FOR NICHOLAS' MONTHLY CHECK UP AND ALL IS WELL. HE HAS HAD A TOUCH OF THE FLU FOR A FEW DAYS BUT THEY WEREN'T CONCERNED ABOUT IT....BUT HE IS BETTER NOW AND BACK AT SCHOOL. HE WILL HAVE HIS SCANS ON FEB. 4TH...SO START PRAYING THAT THEY WILL BE CLEAN....WHICH I KNOW THEY WILL BE.
THEN HE WILL HAVE TO GO BACK UP FOR A VISIT ON THE 8TH. AFTER THAT, IF ALL GOES WELL WITH THE SCANS...HE WILL ONLY HAVE TO GO EVERY 3-4 MONTHS. YEAH!!!! THEY ARE VERY PLEASED WITH HOW WELL HE IS DOING....SO ARE WE!!! EVEN WHEN HE HAD THE FLU THIS WEEK...IT DID NOT SLOW HIM DOWN AT ALL!! MOST PEOPLE WOULD BE DRAINED BUT NOT HIM!!! AMAZING!!!
WHEN WE WERE LEAVING DUKE HE WANTED TO RIDE THE TRAIN THAT TAKES YOU BACK TO THE PARKING GARAGE. SO WE HAD TO GO FROM THE CLINIC INTO THE HOSPITAL AND THEN DOWN TO THE TUNNEL. IN DOING THIS WE HAD TO GO TO THE 5TH FLOOR WHICH IS THE CHILDREN'S UNIT. THERE IS A BIG FISH TANK IN THE LOBBY OF THE 5TH FLOOR THAT WE WOULD ALWAYS GO SEE THE FISH AND PUSH THE BUTTONS TO MAKE BUBBLES. OF COURSE HE HAD TO DO THAT. THEN I WANTED TO WALK OVER TO THE PLAYROOM TO SEE IF IT WAS OPEN TO ASK THEM A QUESTION...WE PASSED THE DOORS TO 5200 (THE BONE MARROW/ STEM CELL UNIT) AND HE STOPPED DEAD IN HIS TRACKS AND SAID "I DON'T HAVE TO GO IN THERE DO I MOMMY?" BROKE MY HEART!! I GUESS HE REMEMBERS THAT PLACE SINCE THAT IS PROBABLY THE WORST HE FELT AND IT WAS ALSO THE LAST PLACE HE WAS IN. I TOLD HIM NO AND HE SAID " CUZ I'M NOT SICK ANYMORE, RIGHT?" UGH!!!! THEN WE CONTINUED ON.
HE WANTED TO GO SEE THE DUCKS AT THE GARDENS SO WE DROVE OVER THERE...SINCE IT WAS SUCH A NICE DAY. WE SAT AND ATE LUNCH AND FEED THE GEESE AND FEW DUCKS. THEY WEREN'T REALLY HUNGRY SO HE KEPT YELLING AT THEM TO EAT THE FRENCH FRIES. I KEPT TELLING HIM THEY DON'T WANT THE FRENCH FRIES BUT HE KEPT YELLING AT THEM TO EAT THEM!!!
AFTER THAT WE BEGAN THE LONG DRIVE HOME...HE SLEPT!!!
TOMORROW WE ARE HAVING HIS MAKE A WISH SEND OFF PARTY!! WE WILL HAVE ABOUT 34 PEOPLE OVER TO GIVE HIM A WONDERFUL SEND OFF. WE PROBABLY WON'T LEAVE TIL SUNDAY....BUT THAT WAS THE ONLY DAY WE COULD GET EVERYONE TOGETHER. HE IS VERY EXCITED. WE ALL ARE ACTUALLY. IT WILL BE SO NICE TO JUST GO HAVE FUN AND FORGET ALL THE BAD STUFF THAT HAPPENED THIS PAST YEAR. THERE IS GOOD STUFF TOO....BUT IT WAS A CRAPPY YEAR!!!! HANNAH IS SO CUTE CUZ SHE WROTE MICKEY MOUSE (MICEE MOUZE HER SPELLING) A LETTER TELLING HIM SHE MISSED HIM AND LOVES HIM. THEN SHE SAID HER BROTHER HAD CANCER AND MOMMY AND DADDY TOOK CARE OF HIM. HE IS BETTER NOW AND WE ARE STAYING AT GIVE KIDS THE WORLD. THEN SHE DREW HIM A PICTURE!! IT IS JUST REALLY SWEET!! THEY ARE JUST SO EXCITED!! THEY TOO DESERVE THIS TRIP....THEY HAD TO PUT UP WITH ALOT OF TIME AWAY FROM ME. ALL IN ALL THEY DID REALLY WELL WITH IT. HANNAH STILL GETS A BIT UPSET IF I HAVE TO GO TO DUKE...EVEN IF IT IS FOR THE DAY I THINK SHE THINKS IT WILL BE LONGER. TIME WILL HEAL THAT!!!
WELL ALL THE KIDS ARE AT SCHOOL AND I HAVE TO GET READY FOR OUR TRIP. HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH EVERYONE AND TAKE CARE. THERE ARE NEW PICS IN THE PHOTO ALBUM. I WILL UPDATE AFTER DISNEY!!!! KEEP PRAYING FOR THOSE IN NEED.
LOVE, HEATHER

HIS TEACHERS NAME IS MS. TIFFANY AND HE REALLY SEEMS TO LIKE HER. HANNAH HAD HER WHEN SHE WAS 3 AND I THOUGHT SHE WAS A GREAT TEACHER!!

HELLO,
NOTHING REALLY NEW TO REPORT. I HOPE EVERYONE HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS. WE HAD A REALLY NICE CHRISTMAS. MUCH BETTER THAN LAST YEAR. NICHOLAS REALLY ENJOYED IT ALL. HE KEPT TELLING US THAT SANTA CAN'T COME CUZ IT WASN'T SNOWING. EVEN ON CHRISTMAS MORNING BEFORE WE WENT DOWNSTAIRS WE WERE TELLING HIM SANTA CAME LAST NIGHT AND HE SAID NO HE DIDN'T CUZ THERE IS NO SNOW. IT WAS SOOO CUTE!! IT WASN'T UNTIL HE WENT DOWNSTAIRS AND SAW HIS BIKE IN FRONT OF HIS STOCKING THAT IT FINALLY CLICKED. I GUESS ALL THE CHRISTMAS SHOWS THAT THEY SEE THERE IS SNOW.
MY BROTHER AND HIS FAMILY CAME OUT FROM EL PASO...SO WE HAD A FULL HOUSE THIS YEAR. IT WAS REALLY NICE.
WE LEAVE ON THE 14TH FOR NICHOLAS' MAKE A WISH TRIP. HE IS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT AND HE DEFINATELY DESERVES IT. THE GIRLS ARE THRILLED ALSO...ESPECIALLY CUZ THEY GET TO MISS A FEW DAYS OF SCHOOL.
HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH ALL OF YOU. TAKE CARE AND KEEP NICHOLAS AND OTHERS IN YOUR PRAYERS.
NEW PICS IN THE PHOTO ALBUM!!!!

TODAY WE WENT UP TO DUKE FOR NICHOLAS' APPOINTMENT WITH DR. BURKE. ALL IS GOING WELL WITH HIM. HIS COUNTS ARE RIGHT WHERE THEY WANT THEM AND DR. BURKE, DR. BRIETFIELD AND THE NURSES WERE ALL THRILLED TO SEE HIM RUNNING THE HALLS OF CLINIC. THEY ALL THOUGHT HE LOOKED TERRIFIC...SO DO WE!!!
WE ALSO BROUGHT A VAN LOAD OF TOYS FOR THE KIDS ON THE PEDIATRIC UNIT AS WELL AS THOSE THAT WERE IN THE RAINBOW DAY HOSPITAL. WE WEREN'T ABLE TO PASS OUT THE TOYS UP ON THE UNIT BECAUSE OF HIPA (PRIVACY ACTS) BUT WE WERE ABLE TO HAND THEM OUT TO THOSE THAT WERE IN THE DAY HOSPITAL. CHILD LIFE WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE ALL THE TOYS AND THEY WERE GOING TO GET RIGHT ON IT AND START PASSING THEM OUT TO THE UNITS. THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED WITH THE TOY DRIVE. NICHOLAS KEPT TELLING US AND THE CHILD LIFE PEOPLE THAT THEY WERE FOR THE SICK KIDS...TO MAKE THEM HAPPY.
WE HAD BROUGHT COOKIES FOR THE DOCTORS AND NURSES AND NICHOLAS WISHED THEM ALL MERRY CHRISTMAS BEFORE HE WOULD HAND THEM THEIR PLATE. HE THEN SANG JINGLE BELLS AND SANTA CLAUSE IS COMING TO TOWN FOR DR. BURKE. IT WAS TOO CUTE!!!
THANK YOU AGAIN AND WE WISH YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR!!!
LOVE, HEATHER

Hello,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. We are keeping busy trying to get everything ready for Christmas. Meghan and Hannah were in the Christmas parade with their dance studio...so Paul, Nicholas and I watched the parade with some friends and family. It was really fun except it ended up being pretty warm that day. Nicholas just loved the fire trucks and the people throwing out candy!! He just jumped up and down waiting for the candy!!

He is doing really well. He is fighting a bit of a cough right now....but his immune system was "nearly normal" at his 100 day studies...so I am sure he will be fine. He was taken off the Septra which he took Fri-Sun. and he is still on Accutane til Feb.

We started a toy drive in our community for the kids at Duke and so far have had a terrific response. My dining room table is stacked with toys and we have raised alot of money. We will out as a family and buy toys with the money. It will be good for the kids to learn how to give. They are actually excited to help out and pick toys for the kids.
We will take them up to Duke with us on the 21st when Nicholas has to go back for a check up.

Not much else going on here!! Keep praying for those that are in need of prayers....especially this time of year it is hard to be in the hospital.

Merry Christmas!!!
Heather

HELLO!!
I HOPE THAT EVERYONE HAD A HAPPY THANKSGIVING. WE HAD A NICE FAMILY DINNER AT MY BROTHER'S HOUSE. WE HAD SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR.
NICHOLAS IS FINALLY COMPLETELY POTTY TRAINED. WE WERE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH GOING #2 IN THE POTTY. YOU FIGURE FOR 6 MONTHS HE WAS GOING IN A BAG OUT OF HIS BELLY...SO HE HAD SOME TIME TO MAKE UP. BUT IT FINALLY CLICKED AND HE IS SOOOO PROUD OF HIMSELF!!! ANYWAY......
WE ARE NOW IN THE PROCESS OF FINDING A SCHOOL FOR NICHOLAS TO START IN JANUARY. HE IS EXCITED TO GO TO SCHOOL LIKE HIS SISTERS. HE WAS GOING A FEW TIMES A WEEK BEFORE HE GOT DIAGNOSED. HE LOVES TO BE AROUND OTHER KIDS.
WELL NICHOLAS IS WAITING TO GO DECORATE THE HOUSE SOME MORE. HE IS MY LITTLE HELPER....OR SO HE THINKS....IT ACTUALLY TAKES ME LONGER BUT IT IS FUN!!!
HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH EVERYONE AND HAVE A FUN HOLIDAY SEASON.

Hello all!!!
Paul and Nicholas went up to Duke today for his monthly visit. All is well with him. He actually grew 3 cm in the past month!!!! He is 103cm and 40lbs. Dr. Burke was very pleased with how he looked and his blood counts were GREAT!!! Poor boy tho...this was the first visit that he had to have blood drawn from his arm since he had his central line removed. They had to stick him twice which made it worse. Paul said he just SCREAMED and then fell asleep right away afterwards!! After he woke up (2 1/2 hours later) he told Paul he didn't like the shots. But other than that his appointment was terrific. He may not have to have all his immunizations again (which was a possibility after transplant) cuz he is still showing strong immunizations. They will make a decision by next month. But the doctors are very pleased with his progress. His next set of scans will be the beginning of Feb. So from now until then he will be seen once a month....then after those scans (if all is clean) he won't have to go back up there til May. YEAH!!!!!!

I got an email from a little boy's grandparents that we met while up at Duke. He is 2 years old and is going to be getting a kidney transplant (his father will be the donor) but the doctors are trying to wait as long as they can to make sure that he is a bit bigger and stronger. Right now his kidneys are only functioning at about 15ut lately he has been keeping steady at that. His name is Bayden...so please keep him in your prayers that he will continue to get stronger so he will have an easier transplant!!! We met them one day while Nicholas was out walking and Bayden was in a wagon. Nicholas kept saying look at the baby (I guess cuz he was in a wagon) But Nicholas sat and talked with him and his family..then later that night while we were making the rounds on the unit he kept telling everyone good night when we passed their rooms. A day or two later Bayden's grandfather came looking for us and found us in the playroom and he had a big stuffed dog for Nicholas. They were leaving and he said he just had to come find Nicholas to give him the dog he bought. He said Nicholas just touched their family and got in their hearts. He asked if we would keep them posted on Nicholas' recovery. We all knew that Nicholas was a special little boy but it is great to hear it from a stranger.

Keep all the kids in your prayers....they need them!!! It is so great to hear about the kids you met getting clean test results and continue to pray that they stay that way...because unfortunately many of these cancers have a high relapse rate!!!!

Everyone have a very Happy Thanksgiving....I know this year will be much better than last year for us.

Love,
Heather, Paul, Meghan, Hannah & Nicholas

I will post new pics after Thanksgiving!!!!

HELLO,
TODAY NICHOLAS GOT TO GO SWIMMING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A YEAR!!! WHENEVER THE GIRLS WOULD GO GET IN THEIR SUITS TO GO TO THE BEACH OR THE POOL....NICHOLAS WOULD ALWAYS SAY..."I GET TO GO WHEN MY TUBIES ARE OUT" WELL AS YOU ALL KNOW, HE HAD HIS CENTRAL LINE OUT 2 WEEKS AGO AND SO HE WAS READY (ONCE THE SITE HEALED) TO HIT THE POOL. SINCE IT HAD BEEN A YEAR, I REALLY THOUGHT HE WOULD BE HESITANT TO GO IN. HE TALKED ABOUT IT ALL MORNING...AND WE WENT TO GRANDPA AND GRANDMA'S INDOOR POOL...HE PUT ON HIS "BABING SOUP" (AS HE CALLS IT) PUT ON HIS FLOATY AND JUMPED RIGHT IN. HE SWAM ALL OVER AND JUMPED IN FROM THE SIDE...OVER AND OVER AGAIN. WHEN IT WAS TIME TO GO I HAD TO DRAG HIM OUT OF THE POOL AND PROMISE I WOULD TAKE HIM ANOTHER DAY!! HE WAS SOOOOO EXCITED THAT HE GOT TO GO SWIMMING!!! SUCH LITTLE THINGS EXCITE KIDS...IT'S GREAT!!!
PAUL AND I LEAVE ON FRIDAY AND WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A WEEK OF PEACE AND QUIET. AFTER A YEAR OF GOING AND GOING....WE ARE READY FOR JUST RELAXING!! WE WILL MISS THE KIDS BUT THEY WILL HAVE FUN WITH GRANDPA AND GRANDMA....WHO WILL NEED THEIR OWN CRUISE AFTERWARDS!!!
A LITTLE BOY THAT NICHOLAS WAS ON THE UNIT WITH JUST GOT HIS SCANS AND HE IS ALSO IN COMPLETE REMISSION. THIS LITTLE BOY AND NICHOLAS ARE ABOUT A MONTH APART IN AGE, A MONTH APART IN DIAGNOSIS, SAME DISEASE, STAGING, HISTOLOGY..ONLY DIFFERENCE IS NICHOLAS ISN'T N-MYC AMPLIFIED!! BUT WE ARE GLAD THAT HE IS DOING WELL.
PLEASE KEEP PRAYING FOR NICHOLAS TO STAY HEALTHY AND FOR ALL THE KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES FIGHTING THEIR DISEASES!!!
HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT WEEK!!!
HEATHER

Happy Halloween Everyone!!!!
We actually did our trick or treating last night. Our community has a hayride to take all the kids around the neighborhood. Nicholas was Captain Hook (pictures will be up soon) Hannah was Tinkerbell and Meghan was Belle. We also had a party at church on Friday night...Paul was Spongebob and I was an angel.
Make a wish called this evening. Nicholas' wish of going to DisneyWorld was approved and we will be going Jan 17-23....yea!!! He is sooooo excited. It will work out great also cuz some friends of ours and their kids will be there for a few days that we are there. That will be fun!! We get to stay at Give Kids the World. They give you a 2 bdrm villa. Then at Disney we don't have to wait in line for ANYTHING!!!! Wish kids get a special pass that gets them to the front of the line!! Yea!!!!!
We had a party tonight to celebrate Nicholas being done with treatments (for most part) the only thing he has still is his Accutain for 6 months but that is just a pill we give him at home. He has no real side effects from it except dry skin. So, we had 24 friends and family over to help celebrate. I can't believe that it has been a year since all this started and I am glad that we are done. It WILL NOT BE BACK!!! I won't let it and neither will Nicholas!!!!
I hope and pray that all those that are fighting cancer and those we have met along the way are doing well. We will continue praying for you!!!
Love, HEather

Monday, October 25, 2004 9:51 AM CDT

Nicholas is now tube free!!!! He had his central line removed this morning and at first he wasn't really happy about not having his "tubies" but then he was okay with it. When he realized he can splash in the tub now and not have to have his tagaderm changed....he was happy to not have them. But you figure he has had them for a year now...just about...so he may not realize that he isn't suppose to have them. It is just what he knows now!! But thankfully they are GONE cuz it is very hard to bathe a 3 year old without them getting too wet!!
Other than that no new news!! He is doing great and we pray he continues to do so. It doesn't seem that it has almost been a year since all this started!!! Hopefully this will be the end of it and other than routine follow ups and scans....we pray that we are done with chemo and all that other fun stuff!!!
Have a great Halloween!!!
Love, Heather

Hello,
Nicholas is still doing great. He went up to Duke on Tuesday for his check up with Dr. Burke. She seemed to think he was doing great. He will get his central line out Monday and then he will only have to go back up to Duke once a month for check ups....yeah!!!!! We did get a bit of bad news Tuesday tho. At the beginning of all of this Nicholas had bad swelling of his right leg and testicles. So they wanted to get an ultrasound of his testicles to see how they were doing cuz they seemed a bit abnormal. Looks as if there was loss of blood flow to the right testicle and probably the left (further testing will have to be done) and looks as if they are necrotic. Which basically means that he will more than likely be sterile....if they find the left is the same. But hey....upseting as it is....he is alive and that is what matters. So many of the kids that fight cancer have lost organs or limbs...we have been pretty lucky and tho unfortunate....it isn't the end of the world.
Hope all is well with everyone and hope those we have met along the way are also doing well. We keep praying for them. Thank you for your continued prayers for Nicholas....we know they are being heard!!!!
Heather

Thursday, October 14, 2004 8:46 PM CDT

Hello all....
Nicholas continues to do great!! He is thrilled that he is getting hair again, which you wouldn't think would bother a 3 year old...but I guess it did. I caught him in front of the mirror patting his head and when he saw me he said "Mommy I'm getting hair" He was sooooo excited!!!
We went up to see Paul's mom in Delaware and Nicholas loved the trip. It was the first time he has been able to go since Paul's dad's funeral which was 3 weeks before Nicholas' diagnosis.
We will be going back up to Duke to see Dr. Burke on Tuesday. Hopefully they will say he can start going to some sort of school or mother's morning out at the beginning of the year....cuz HE NEEDS IT. He just loves when he gets to go play with his little friends. The picture of him that is at Alligator Adventure he went with his friend A.J. and Nicholas was more interested in just playing with A.J. than the alligators. He is just glad to be with kids again.
We thank all of you that have prayed for Nicholas over this past hard year. Continue to pray for that this horrid cancer NEVER comes back!!!! Thank you all for the support you have given us!! We truely appreciate it!!!
Love, Heather
Look at the new pics!!!!

Thursday, October 7, 2004 10:04 PM CDT

Well....Nicholas had his last appointment with Dr. Driscoll...his stem cell doctor. He will now go back under the care of the hemoc team. He is now off his daily antibiotics and will only have to take them Fri-Sun. He is still scheduled to have his central line removed on the 25th!! We are leaving tomorrow to head up to Delaware to see Paul's mom and brother's. This will be the first time Nicholas has gotten to go up there since last year!!
I will get new pics on the site when we get back!!!

Hello all,
Yes, I am finally getting around to creating a web page for Nicholas!!! He is doing terrific!! He had his 100 day studies last week and his scans were all clean!!! YEA!!!! His immunology tests were also great!! This means no more masks and he can go in public now and play like a kid again!! He is scheduled to get his central line taken out on October 25th. I will be sooo glad to get those out cuz he is so active that I am afraid he is going to pull them out!! He is SO ACTIVE it wears me out!! He is eating like a pig....even when he is on Accutane which is suppose to decrease appetite, but not his!
Hope all the other kids he was on 5200 with are doing great!!
