Janna’s Fundraiser Page

A Janna Update!!!

Janna is doing great and has bounced back wonderfully from her summer of antibiotics. She is doing something different for school this year. It was a tough decision on our part but she truly loves her new school. She is attending a More at Four Program (basically a 4 year old Kindergarten) with 16 typically developing 4 year olds. This county program is held at several sites and Janna’s is at Small World – the daycare where she attended 2 days a week this summer.

She has a wonderful teacher and assistant and loves going to her class. She wakes up asking, ‘school day?’ or ‘school morrow?’. She’s learning to eat/try more foods as well.

I forgot to update you in July (I was SO excited about her cardiac news!) concerning Janna’s dentist appointment in May. It turned out better than we expected although she would not sit in the dental chair. She did allow the dental assistant to brush her teeth and reluctantly let her floss them as she leaned on her back from my lap to the assistant’s lap. She was good for the dentist as well. She has a little bit of a cross-bite due to sucking on her first 2 fingers at night/nap time. The dentist said that it wasn’t too bad but that they would keep an eye on it. Other than that, she got an excellent report! We go back in December. All those evenings of pinning her down on the floor and scrubbing her teeth paid off (thanks Joe for keeping us all faithful in the nightly pin-down). Joe says that he rather hear her fuss and cry at home than in the dental chair! And now she doesn’t even fight it – she loves to brush her teeth and she tolerates us giving them a good scrub as well.

Last month Janna visited her Duke Eye Doctor and also received an excellent report. Dr. Yanovich’s husband is the Golf Pro at the new Lonnie Poole Course at NCSU. Last month he treated TDSN kids to a golf clinic and plans to provide another one in the Fall. Next year Janna will be old enough to attend so hopefully we will be able get her out there, with a UNC shirt on of course! You can read more about Rob Yanovitch and the clinic here Rob YanovitchThis link is not working properly but does take you to TDSN where you can choose Newsletters (top right) and then choose Sept/Oct News Letter. Then scroll down to the last page (12) and also see pictures from the clinic on page 5.

We had a busy summer dosing medicine and trying to get Janna well but it didn’t slow her down too much. We were able to get back to the beach for a few days in August. I’ll let the pictures tell the story below. The kid LOVES water!

Don’t forget that we’re doing the Buddy Walk for our 4th year in October. Please consider coming out and walking with Janna? It is such a fun day for everyone involved, especially for all kids! Where else can you spend the day playing games, riding rides, enjoying free ice cream, eat lunch and get a T-shirt for such a small price. And at the same time support a group of wonderful individuals who enjoy life to the fullest. Visit Janna’s fundraising page for more details and/or to sponsor her.

THANKS FOR SPENDING A LITTLE TIME HERE WITH JANNA!!!

Sunday, July 19, 2009

Janna got a wonderful report at the cardiologist last Tuesday. And we're finally off of Lasix! All praise to God for continuing to bless her health. She started the summer off rough, fighting sinus infections and it took 25 days worth of 3 different antibiotics to help her get rid of the on-going infection. But she's finally got it beat and is enjoying these nice summer days. She's attending Small World in Goldsboro 2 days a week and is really enjoying her class and new friends there. She sits at a table with 3 boys and she's keeping them straight :)!!! And of course she's loving getting spoiled by the grandparents on the other days of the week ;)

A Cardio Hooray! Janna now weighs 35 pounds - slowly but surely she's gaining and getting taller too.

Being silly with daddy and Dr. M!

Dr. M checking out Janna's liver.

Thanks be to God for keeping your little heart in such good working condition! Janna, although your Mitral valve is not perfect, it's yours and we are thankful for that! We know that one day you may have an artificial valve but we'll continue to pray that you keep your valve forever. The Tricuspid side leak is mild and the Mitral side is leaking mild to moderate but Dr. M says you are doing great and tolerating the leak very well. Your heart function is great and there is no enlargemnet.

He was happy to see that you are still full of energy - boy, he just doesn't know how much energy you have! You really disliked the EKG - it's been a year since you had one of those. And not even Duckie could keep you calm.

A pitiful girl after the EKG - those stickers hurt ya know!

Photobucket

And although we made it through the echo without sedation, it was probably the worse one ever. They just wanted to take pictures of your heart and i know that cold gel and camera probe is funny feeling but it surely doesn't hurt! The tech put a Barney video in for you and that helped tremendously as i fed you Kix cereal, held down your arms, and daddy danced a jig in the background to keep you calm. You didn't do that bad i guess, but you sure put up a fuss most of the time. I guess we'll have to start practicing at home like we do with the stethoscope. I'll have to think about what i can use for a cold gel. You really had fun pretending to doctor on daddy!

You did allow Dr. M to listen to your heart and lungs and press on your liver without much resistance. We are so thankful that he took you off of the Lasix - i can't remember you ever being Lasix-free except maybe a short time during your first year of life, prior to the 2nd heart surgery. He said he would increase your heart medicine in January if need be but he wants you off the diuretic - we are so HAPPPY about this!

To celebrate, we took you to Surf City after your appointment. And did you have fun! You loved the ocean and everything about it. You have no fear of the water or anything else for that matter so we had to stay close by you. Daddy bought you a boogie board and it didn't take you long to learn how to ride. Like father, like daughter! Daddy used to surf every day when he worked/lived in Wilmington. That has slowed down to hardly ever, but he sure did love seeing/helping you enjoy the beach. Here you are 'kicking up your heels' at Surf City!

Janna had her 4 year old well check-up today. She weighs 34 pounds and is 37 inches tall. She has gained 5 pounds in the last year. We thought there was one vaccine for this visit but it wound up being 4! Janna was not happy! She screamed and cried while 2 of us held her down for the 4 leg sticks. As soon as she could sit up and rip the bandaids off of her legs she was fine. The finger stick was not too pleasant either. Her hemaglobin was LOW as usual, at 9.5 - not terrible though, for her. This is the one thing that continues to do flips in the back of mind. If a reason could be found I think I'd completely let it go :) Taking iron doesn't help. Her cells all look good but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have Duke Hematology look at them again since it's been awhile. Low hemaglobin is a rare side effect of Enalapril - the heart medicine she's been on forever. So I tend to blame it on that!

Janna has enjoyed spending time with her grandparents this week while school was out. She is thoroughly spoiled by them all :) The potty training is going well - it comes in spurts but lately she is getting more consistent and telling us when she needs to go. Daddy will be one happy camper the day we reach 100 percent!

We visit the dentist next month for a real check-up. Janna went when she was two but it's time to start the routine visits. Say a prayer for all of us. I have a feeling she is not going to be too thrilled about a stranger wanting to get into her mouth. Daddy is expecting a throw-down :) I'll be sure to update. Enjoy the pictures below. It may take me awhile to get them added but I'll start with a few.

We recently enjoyed one of the windy days by flying a kite. Janna really got the hang of it and to our amazement, didn't lose the kite :)

Wanted to give you a brief update on Janna. She is doing well at school and home - enjoying life to the fullest and keeping us all busy. We gets notes from school stating what a good helper she is - from helping set the snack table to helping her classmates with all sorts of things. Some days she doesn't wear her listening ears but most days she is a big girl and listens and follows all directions.

Unfortunately we have discovered that tomatoes/tomato-based foods are the cause for Janna's bottom and back flare ups. She has eczema type patches that get extremely dry, red, irritated. It looks awful at times but never seems to bother her too much. The child LOVES Italian foods and vegetable beef soup! But we cut them out for over a week and it all healed up and went away. So we are only letting her have spaghetti, lasagna, and pizza once in a great while. It's so hard because these are her favorite foods. Hopefully she'll learn to like some other foods along the way.

I wanted to share a few snow pictures and also a few anniversary pictures. Joe and I decided to do a little kayaking to celebrate our anniversay :) I am so thankful for a wonderful husband who is such a great daddy as well. God continues to bless our family daily!

I also wanted to make you aware of a very important day coming up - March 31st. Please watch the following video to see what will be happening on this day. We hope that you will join us and many others in providing respect for all people.

Hope that you are all doing well. In His love and grace, aj

HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY JANNA MACIE!!!

WOW! Four years ago you were starting to wiggle and work your way out into the world. Although a scheduled Groundhog Day induction, I started labor with you that morning - God had planned your birth and He chose your delivery day as well. And after your heart rate dropped nearly out of site three times, an emergency c-section was in order. I couldn't see but they told daddy to stand up and look at your wrinkled face and dark and wild hairdo. He knew from your eyes that you had Down syndrome although we had no official diagnosis prenatally. But that didn't matter - we were more concerned about your heart. They whisked you away and pulled daddy along too. He watched the nurse weigh you and clean you up and he snapped a few pics, after she reminded him that he was holding a camera : ). Meanwhile I was losing some red jello, after I told them and told them that anesthesia would make me sick. They finally believed me and shot something in the IV to relieve nausea. After they sewed my belly back up they rolled me to some room where I waited and waited with no legs for it seemed days while everyone else got to be with you! You completely changed our world 4 years ago baby girl and we wouldn't have it any other way. Yes, it has been challenging at times but we love you just as you are! You've scared us a few times with your heart issues but we know God is making you into just who He wants you to be and you are one tough gal! We love you so much and are so proud of the little girl you are becoming. We miss those baby days but it is such a joy watching you grow up. Thanks for your smiles, for your hugs and pats, and for ALWAYS loving us and life itself. May God bless us with many more years to share in the joy of your life that is VERY much worth living. Happy 4th Birthday!

We love you sunshine girl, mama & daddy

Janna versus Mitral Valve Leak;

the verdict...A GREAT CARDIO CHECK-UP!

Photobucket

Praise the Lord! Janna baby, you did great at the doctor today and also got great news. Dr. M heard a gallop when listening to your heart and daddy read his concerned face. But, the echo says MILD leakage from Mitral and Tricuspid sides of your valve. He told us afterwards that he was a bit concerned and unsure of what the echo would tell because of hearing the gallop. But, the leak is no worse since last visit and possibly even a bit better, he says. Some kids just have a gallop. Your heart function is GREAT! You will continue with Enalapril and Lasix and of course the Prevacid for reflux. We are thanking and praising God for yet another year of good heart function and no surgeries!

You weighed in at 34 pounds! That's great considering you lost a couple before Christmas with pneumonia - you've gained them back.

Janna, mama and daddy are so proud of you! You did so well for the nurses and doctors today. You did struggle some with the echo but overall you were sweet. I know you are glad that I didn't ask about a blood draw as we usually have one done. Every time it tells us the same thing - your hemaglobin is on the low side as well as your hematocrit but that's just YOU, your thyroid levels are fine, you don't have Celiacs, you may be a little dehydrated, etc. etc. As long as you are strong and active, which no one can deny, we will only let them draw blood once a year. You are doing great and we are so happy and thankful for that. ALL praise to God for another good report!!! Mama and daddy love you very much!

Yes, she still loves ripping up the paper!

Photobucket

Being silly with daddy.

Photobucket
Photobucket

But they ALWAYS practice ahead of time.

Photobucket

Showing Dr. M some of my family pictures.

Photobucket

A little reluctant for him to listen initially.

Photobucket

Here's where she shed a few tears - probably because she had to be STILL for longer than a minute.

Photobucket

Janna gets an A plus, lots of high fives, a Dr. Seuess Backpack full of coloring pages, crayons and such, some special nurse hugs, a ticket to come back in July and most importantly, another praise report to share! Now we're headed to Uncle's this evening - Janna calls my brother, Andy, simply, 'Uncle'. And since he has a birthday this Sunday, we're going to celebrate tonight.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY UNCLE ANDY!!! We love you!
Photobucket

Sunday, January 4, 2009

I know, I know, I waited WAY too long to update this time around! Sorry about that. I'll keep this short and sweet and let the last 2-3 months worth of pictures catch you up. Most of you know that Janna fought a bit with pneumonia just before Christmas. She's much better but sill has some head congestion that came on after Christmas. Overall, it really hasn't slowed her down too much. She has enjoyed her time away from school and spending lots of time with family and relatives the last few weeks. She's been doing great with potty training too. She has a cardiology appointment on January 16th. We are so thankful that she has avoided another heart surgery this past year - praise the Lord! They were anticipating her third surgery to be around her 3rd birthday and here she is almost 4! We're praying for another great report on the 16th. Enjoy plenty of Janna pictures below from the October Buddy Walk right on through Christmas;
