Dear Maria,

I just read your note to Westin's family in his guestbook. Thank you so much for your compassion and kindness in reaching out to this family. They are so very much in need of your prayers. I am heading to doctor today to seek help with sleep; yesterday, I went through a red light (thankfully in my own neighborhood) with my younger son in the backseat. I was aware of what I was doing, but it didn't register as "wrong" until I had driven through the light. I am so thankful that God protected us, and gave me a sign that it absolutely is time to seek help with sleep. Please pray that it works!

I'll bet your kiddos are getting excited for Easter, and for Shae's birthday (still can't believe he's almost one!). I'm sure all three will look absolutely adorable, and I look forward to pics.

Am hoping and praying that all continues to go well with Miss Kylie. She is such a cutie pie, and she deserves every happiness life can send her way, for a change -- you all do. You've prepared her so well to bring her own special gifts to the world -- it will be great to come along for the ride and watch her shine in the years to come.

Hey, Maria,

I am thrilled to read your latest update! I am glad everyone is doing so well, especially Miss Kylie. I know February is usually a "jinx" month for seizures, so I am especially happy to see that for once, it did not "curse" you as in the past. I know how you feel about possibly jinking things, but perhaps Kylie's path is finally being carved out for her,so that she can continue to just take off like crazy. Good Lord, it sounds likeyou need at least another pair of hands with that Miss Ava, but Ihave to laugh at her antics and at what comes out of her mouth --easy to , cince I don't have to deal with it, I guess. :) I cannot bellieve that your boy is going to be 1! That just doesn't seem possible. He sounds like he's a real ladies' man, and as adorable as he is, I think tthis is just the beginning with him in that department....
I will pray that kindergarten is a positive experience for Kylie --I have a feeling it will be. Yes, kids can be cruel, no doubt, but they can also be unbelievably sweet, as youhave seeen in your own house. I am glad that she will be close by at school, and am also glad she will bhave one of her therapists working with her again next year. Yes, you will cry when she goes to kindergarten, no matter what --it's one of the rites of passage we moms have to go through -- but I think you will have many happy moments and peace of mind once she settles in. She may be behind, but she is making such great strides. I believe she will do great in the friends department, and will draw those children who will be true, good friends for her. That is a concern every year, I tell you, even when they hit high school, but you just have to do what you can to make THEM be the kind of kid who will attract the right kind oe people, and when you do, that is at least half the battle. I think Kylie is naturally that kind of kid, and you have opened so many doors for her and guided her along the right paths, and I believe she will do just fine. It's never always smooth sailing, but I know you will have many, manymoments when you will be ust bursting with pride about not only what she is able to do, but who she continues to grow and become.
Well, it's late and I should sign off, though I know I won't sleep. I do have to share one piece of horrible news for you (which is at the root of why I can't sleep). Three weeks ago today, my precious, beautiful, sweet Westin left us unexpectedly to be with Jesus. It was 8:36 a.m.EST on Friday, Feb. 26. It feels like forever. I flew to SW Virgiinia to be with his family starting the next day. My husband could only stay until Sunday, as he had to be back here for work and our boys' school. I stayed until that Thursday, but a huge part of me has never left..... I have never, ever known grief so great that at times it is hard to breathe. I know what it's like to hold his mother and his sisters ad his grandparents, to whisper promises to him and kiss him while he lies cold and still, and to speak to and about him at his funeral, and even to stand in the falling snow while a prayer is read and balloons are released at his resting place, but still, it doesn't seem real. It just feels like something is terribly, terribly wrong, but there's no way to fix it. Please pray for his family, expecially his mother, in whose arms he died, asking "Help me mommy!" and his litlest big sister and bestest friend, Emma (8), who was his security blanket and who now desperately needs one herself. They are ALL missing him, but it is his mom, Julie, and Emma who were with him the most, 24/7, with his maternal grandparents not far behind. The support of others, as well as their faith, are all that enable them to move through each moment at this time. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Maria. Any small comfort that can be brought to them means everything to me. As you know far too well, seeing someone you love in so much pain and not being able to take it away is hell in and of itself, and that's part of my world now..... I'm certain Westin is whole and even happy, but it wasn't supposed to happen like this. I'll bet you he has met Caroliine, and together with her is giving the angels up there a run for their money -- they both were so mischieviousand full of energy that they just have to have met -- but the angels are laughing, even as they must chase after them. Ijust hope Westin hasn't broken too many things up there.....
Well, time to try and prepare myself for sleep. Thank you so much again, Maria, and please know I will keep sending up the prayers for all of you -- it makes me so happy to read such a good update, and I pray this is just the beginning for your family.

Such great news on the recent update of Kylie. That makes me sad hearing your worries of someone being mean to this sweet little person. Kylie has overcome so many things in her little life. She will do awesome in kindergarten! She was so happy when I saw her today... smilin'... playing Cat in the Hat and laughing. She cheered me right up. You are amazing parents to your little 3 and great friends too. I love you guys. You're the best!

I'm so happy to hear that Miss Kylie is doing so well! I think of my Lexi, being in Kindergarten now, and can't imagine her or really any of the kiddos in her class being mean to a little girl like Kylie. I think for the most part, kids are more sensitive, wanting to help, noticing that they may be needed than the fact that she may need something. Unless of course the parents have already put some negative bug in their mind. I will pray for her, I'm sure she's gonna do great!
I can't believe Shea is going to be one already! WOW! Time has gone fast this past year! I remember Shannon carrying him on the walk last year, he was such a little peanut!
Lil Ava...she just plain cracks me up! I love her spunk! She will definitely keep you on your toes!
Hopefully I'll be seeing you soon ;-) We maybe have some planning to do!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope your holidays found everyone happy and healthy, and that this new year brings more of the same.

Thanks so much for sharing your Christmas card and letter on Miss Kylie's site. The kids are GORGEOUS, and they all seem to be growing up so fast! It may be just me, but I think that little Shae looks like his biggest sister.....

It sounds like things have been moving at their usual whirlwind speed around the Gibbons householw, and I am glad that everyone is able to get involved in so many activities and live such a fulfilling life -- Mom and Dad, you do a GREAT job of offering your children so much abd helping thme find paths that their little hearts want to follow -- they are very lucky children, indeed!

I am home from Masachusetts (where I grew up) and am bone-tired from a day-long trip (despite it being mostly air travel!followed by a day of winter allergies (only in Austin...) and CFS doday, so I'll be making this short. Please know that all of you remain in my thoughts and prayers each day, evin if I don't always have time to check in on you every day and sign the guestbook. I'll be llooking forward to Kylie's Hope and/or other chances to help you fight TS -- keep me and Kylie's other "fans" up to speed!

She is due for another surgery on the 17th of this month, and i need all the prayers i can get!!! They did surgery last year on one of her tumors, and it grew back plus another one they are planning on taking out... we will be at seattle childrens.

Your daughter is so precious!!! oh BTW!!! We noticed our daughter has white hairs, we didnt know until i read your daughter has some as well, it might be linked to the disease...?

As a read your entry I can't help but relate... this disease turns our lives upside down... I think most families just watch their kids develop - never giving much thought to when their kids do things, but with TS suddenly we watch even our non-TS kiddos closer. Kaylee has white spots too and they look just like Jonathan's and some are in the same extact spots as his. She tests negative - still mskes me stop breathing every time I see the spots ... can't help but question the test results. But... I've also noticed that lots of other kids have the same spots and their parents don't even know to worry - they're lucky in a way - I mean that they don't know enough to worry. I guess it's really out of our control... just wish no parent ever had to hear the words your child has Tuberous Sclerosis. Thanks for all you do to promote a cure... Have a wonderful tourney!!!

Boy does your update remind me of my house just a few years ago! The oldest three were all born within 3 yrs and 3 months and it was tough! Then Ryan came along when Trevor was 2 yrs old and Trevor was a monster. He flushed everything down the toilet - toys, underwear, socks, paper. And he was known to throw things in the garbage too and we went without phones, remotes, etc. He also climbed on everything and nothing was safe from his reach - even things on top of the fridge - plus he could escape from anywhere. And there was the mastitis, constant nursing, sick kids, no sleep, Ryan having days and nights mixed up... You'll get through it somehow - a bit dazed and confused I'm sure from lack of sleep - but it will pass like everything else. I'm thinking of you and praying hard for some sleep. I wish I lived closer; I'd bring you some meals over. Your picture of the three is sure cute!

I am so happy that Kylie and Ava got a little brother to love up. He does look a lot like Kylie. Let's hope he gets a bit of her sweet disposition. I pray her next eye test is better and she isn't losing vision. After spending a couple of days with her when you were in the hospital, I am still amazed by what a sweet, loving little girl she is. She may be behind kids her age, but she makes up for it by being so special. I just wish more people could know her. I am blown away and amazed by her whenever I am with her. What a love!

As for Kylie's speech -- way to go, girl!! You guys are must be so very proud of her (and you can pat yourselves on the back for providing this for her as well). It just goes to show that she is a smart girl as well as sweet. I bet she will be the perfect little mommy's helper when the bsby comes. I suspect you might get some rebellion from Miss Ava, as she has been the baby so long, but her sweet spirit and love she shows for her sister will inevitatbly be showered on the new baby as well.

I know it's far more easier said than done, but try to make these last few weeks until the bigday as stress-free and as easy on your body as you can.

Well, it's lae and I gotta go. Praying for a good race to the finish line for you, and hat Kylie continues to have only mild seizures (I really pray for none).

(His neuroblastoma reappeared in Nov 20 scan, so he's on chemo, and so far scans have shown he is able, but we would like a "no glow" PET scan in a few weeks, so if you have time, please pray for my little buddy. He feels great -- no side effects, and we are all so thankful for that.

I sure hope you are feeling better! The stomach bug is the worst as far as I'm concerned, and if memory serves, is doubly nasty when you're pregnant....

I'm glad you guys had a good Xmas, and am thrilled about the FDA news. It still sucks that it'll be about 8 mos before it REALLY becomes available here, but that IS such good news -- finally they are doing something right, huh?

Sounds like the girls are going great guns, and the video sure shows how cute they are! I'm excited for you for the arrival of baby number three, and am wondering if you'll get a boy (my first guess at your pic in the video has me thinking girl, though.....). As long as it is healthy, which it will be, that is all that matters, although your poor hubby may feel surrounded by all that estrogen, huh? :)

Well, gotta go. One of my boys has a sore throat and is getting another round of Cedar Fever (Austin allergies), so I need to tend to him. I pray that you have a quick recovery and good tail end of the pregnancy -- almost in the last trimester, right?!

I just got through listening to the radio interview and watching the TV spot on Shannon and all she and her family are doing for the families at Children's. I could not make it through either without tears, both of sorrow for the loss of Drew and McKenna, whom I remember every day, but also of joy for the generosity extended toward the Olson's efforts, and most of all, for the beautiful, compassionate friendship you have with her that brought all this about. Although what Shannon has lost is beyond measure, I am certain that she and Cam and Rand are so very thankful to have you and your family in their lives, and count you among their "top" blessings.

May God bless you for reaching out to your friend -- and to so many others in the process -- in this way.

I am so glad Kylie is back in school and that despite the crash of your Xmas tree, things seem to be headed toward a good holiday for the Gibbons household. The little stories of Ava and Kylie are just precious -- what an incredible bond between two sweet, adorable little girls.

I lost a nephew last year who was in and out of Children's from time to time and these donations are a wonderful distraction to all of the families during their journey. Chiropractic has much to contribute and is worth the investigation. Take little Ky to a credible Chiropractor and watch her development! I hope everyone is feeling better, and that there are no more nasty "bottom clean-ups" to kick off that morning sickness. (Who named it morning sickness, anyway? It had to be a guy [probably the same one who invented mammography machines....)-- if memory serves, it lasts ALL day. I definitely will be praying that you don't have it all nine months like I did with my second one (let's just sum it up with he had me in the hospital twice before he was born, not counting the false labor alarm at the end).

Kylie, your angel costume is precious!! You are such a cutie (yes, Ava, you are too! :)) I will be praying that you will both be feeling good for trick-or-treat night, and that mommy will be, too. Don't let your Daddy eat all the candy that you don't want, like at my house.

Dear Kylie,

I'm so sorry to hear you're feeling yucky, and hope that since your mom's last post, things have improved for you. The new pictures of you and your sister, etc., are great -- you two are getting so grown up, and cuter than ever. I'm so glad that the golf tournament went so well -- you guys should give yourselves huge high-fives!

I know today is your angel Drew's third angel anniversary, and I know your mommy will be right there for Drew's mommy as she misses her boy and her Muffin so much. My heart aches so much for that family, and I will never understand why both -- or even one -- of their babies had to leave so soon, but since I cannot change that, the least I can do is remember, and let them know that. They are lucky in having such good friends as you and your mommy to always be there for them when they need you, and I know God blesses you for that.

Well, it's ridiculously late (couldn't sleep), so I will try again to sleep. I'll be sending up my prayers for you, including a big thanks for the strides you're making with your speech and other things -- you go, girl!

I'm sorry that I am laughing about her hair...my daughters did the same thing, right before their dance pictures! I used a little cornstarch, patted it into their hair, then shampoo the hair with a clarifying shampoo. I did it twice, and it did a pretty good job! I used warm to hot water, as cold water doesn't help! I've also heard that a hair dryer can help too...it helps melt away the Vasoline! Good luck!

Hey Maria-

I wanted to let you know that I talked with a family that have children that attend Holy Childhood. She was telling me what a tight knit community school and how she trust everyone. She was also letting me know that yes, they have a lot of parent vlounteers as she is one of them. She explained to me that the school is very loving and has really nice kids! She didn't know a whole bunch about the preschool teacher. The school is really hoping to bring more families in with this new program. The numbers are so low in each grade level. I think it would be a good fit for Kylie. Talk to you soon.

I need to send your mommy an e-mail -- I have some questions about Kylie's Hope, especially about a donation and some other stuff, but my e-mail can only receive and not reply or send, so it may be a few days. Please tell her I haven't forgotten -- it will be coming up before we know it! I still owe her an e-mail from several weeks ago, too -- I just can't seem to catch up, especially now.....aaauugh!

Tell her she keeps me amazed with all she and your daddy do for and with you girls, and that she cracks me up with her descriptions of both your antics -- especially Miss Ava! I saw the book, "Teeth are not for Biting," and laughed to myself about how it didn't go over so well with your sister....

Dear Maria,
I wanted to share what happened last night with Kylie and I. We went to Office Max to get a new stapler. As we walked in the door, and I was putting Kylie in the cart, a very friendly older man who worked there said hello to us. Kylie gave him her trade mark grin and proceded to go into a seizure ( not sure if coming in from the dark to bright lights set her off) As I comforted her and held her, he asked if she would be okay or if I needed help. I told him briefly that she has seizures and a brain tumor, and this a something we deal with but she is okay. She came out of the seizure and smiled at him again. He commented " no matter what, what a beautiful child you have there". I totally agreed and we went on with our shopping.

Sounds like you're doing pretty well -- yay! I love the picture of you with your dog, but really, girl, who's walking who, here?:) I'm glad it's not quite so cold so that you can get outside a little bit. Your mommy would think I'm crazy, but I am jealous of your snow! I grew up in New England and lived in Milwaukee and North Carolina before here, and even NC had snow! I hope all goes well with the eye doctor -- I know it will be a long day for all, but I'll be praying that you get through it and that you get some (good) answers there and from your other appointments for this week.

Dear Maria,

I did a little "hooray" as I began reading the MRI results on Kylie, thena bigger, "Oh S---!" when I read the rest. You are so right -- this disease does SUCK, and I am sorry beyond words that it has struck your child (I wouldn't wish it on anyone). Let me say that I think you are doing the absolute best for Kylie, always -- a good deal of her sunshine personality is definitely just "her," but don't discount the role you and Neal play in bringing about a good portion of the smiles and sweetness that you do get. No child can be happy with bad or mediocre parents, and a child who has been through and continues to go through things that your sweet Kylie has could not do so as well as she does without GREAT parents. You guys are probably her best -- definitely her most reliable! -- medicine.

I will be praying extra hard that Kylie's future MRI's will show better results all-around, and as always, for treatment advancements and a cure that will benefit her and all others affected by this. Although I can't be there due to distance, please count me in on however I can help with Kylie's Hope. Just drop me an e-mail, anytime.

This is AWESOME news!! If memory serves, this is the med you had to get from Canada -- what the heck is wrong with our FDA?!! So glad to hear you passed your swallow test -- what's up with the choking on the way home, though, silly girl?!! I can tell you just like to keep your mama on her toes! I can't believe you like Barium -- I have had it, and let's say I didn't suck it down like you did, brave girl!

I'll be praying you get in for those MRIs, and that they provide useful information for Dr. Frost to help you. I know your mom says you're impulsive, but that's OK -- you can't help it, like she said, and your sweet smile shows your true spirit! you're a very special girl who stays in my prayers, and for whom I hope life takes a permanent up-swing, ASAP. You have awesome parents, extended family and special friends, not to mention some precious angels, all of whom love you very much, and want only the best for you. I pray that will be what this New Year begins with, and continues with -- enough of the Jan/Feb seizure monster pattern.
