Dear Mr. Hallmark,

I am writing to you from heaven, and though it must appear,
A rather strange idea, I see everything from here,
I just popped in to visit, your stores to find a card,
A card of love for my parents, as this day for them is hard,
There must be some mistake I thought, every card you can imagine,
except I could not find a card, from a child that lives in heaven,
they are still a parent too, no matter where I reside,
I had to leave, they understand, but oh the tears they cried,
I thought that if I wrote to you, that you would come to know,
that though I live in heaven now, I still love my parents so,
they talk with me, and dreams with me, we still share laughter too,
memories are our way of speaking now, would you see what you can do?
my parents carry me in their heart, their tears they hide from sight,
they plants flowers in my garden, there my living memory dwells,
they writes to other grieving parents, trying to ease there pain as well,
so you see Mr. Hallmark, though I no longer live on earth,
I must find a way, to remind her of her wondrous worth,
they need to be honored, and be remembered too,
just as the children of the earth will do,
thank you Mr. Hallmark, I know you will do your best,
find a way to tell them, how much they mean to me,
until I can do it for myself, when she joins me in eternity.

The Gap

The gap between those who have lost children and those who have not is profoundly difficult to bridge. No one, whose children are well and intact can be expected to understand what parents who have lost children have absorbed and what they bear. Our children come to us through every blade of grass, every crack in the sidewalk, every bowl of breakfast cereal. We seek contact with their atoms, their hairbrush, their toothbrush, their clothing. We reach for what was integrally woven into the fabric of our lives, now torn and shredded.
A black hole has been blown through our souls and, indeed, it often does not allow the light to escape. It is a difficult place. For us to enter there is to be cut deeply, and torn anew, each time we go there, by the jagged edges of our loss. Yet we return, again and again, for that is where our children now reside. This will be so for years to come and it will change us profoundly. At some point in the distant future, the edges of that hole will have tempered and softened but the empty space will remain - a life sentence.
Our friends will change through this. There is no avoiding it. We grieve for our children, in part, through talking about them and our feelings for having lost them. Some go there with us, others cannot and through their denial and a further measure, however unwittingly, to an already heavy burden. Assuming that we may be feeling "better" six months later is simply "to not get it." The excruciating and isolating reality that bereaved parents feel is hermetically sealed from the nature of any other human experience. Thus it is a trap - those whose compassion and insight we most need are those for whom we abhor the experience that would allow them that sensitivity and capacity. And yet, somehow there are those, each in their own fashion, who have found a way to reach us and stay, to our comfort. They have understood, again each in their own way, that our children remain our children through our memory of them. Their memory is sustained through speaking about them and our feelings about their death. Deny this and you deny their life. Deny their life and you no longer have a place in ours.
We recognize that we have moved to an emotional place where it is often very difficult to reach us. Our attempts to be normal are painful and the day to day carries a silent, screaming anguish that accompanies us, sometimes from moment to moment. Were we to give it its own voice we fear we would become truly unreachable, and so we remain "strong" for a host of reasons even as the strength saps our energy and drains our will. Were we to act out our true feelings we would be impossible to be with. We resent having to act normal, yet we dare not do otherwise. People who understand this dynamic are our gold standard. Working our way through this over the years will change us as does every experience - and extreme experience changes one extremely. We know we will have recovered when, as we have read, it is no longer so painful to be normal. We do not know who we will be at that point or who will still be with us.
We have read that the gap is so difficult that, often, bereaved parents must attempt to reach out to friends and relatives or risk losing them. This is our attempt. For those untarnished by such events, who wish to know in some way what they, thankfully, do not know, read this. It may provide a window that is helpful for both sides of the gap.

One year....It was one year ago today, that many Trimper Troopers were on a conference call, praying so diligently (and vigilantly!) that the life of Princess Maddie would be spared and miraculously renewed. One year. It seems like one day, in the pain of it. It seems like a lifetime, in the pain of it. It just doesn't seem right that a child go Home so soon.

But, did God say No? I've thought about that a lot, because I've felt that I failed your family miserably in Maddie going Home too soon. But He's taught me, over and over again, that the prayers He hears most clearly are a child's, and I think that when we stand before His throne, He will say, "Maddie wanted to be with Me." And Maddie trumped all our prayers, all our beggings and supplications. In the end, God said Yes, to Maddie. And I have no doubt that she is very happy with this outcome.

Praying that the Lord's comfort will be greater than any grief, for He is able, He is willing, and He is awesome.

Dear Jeff, Jane, Max, and Sam,
It is hard to believe that it has only been a year since your beloved, Maddie, became an angel. So much has happpened and yet so little in the bigger scale of things. Of course you still miss her painfully. That is to be expected. Of course you will miss Maddie forever. You proabably had a stronger relationship with her than many parents as you had to spent more actual time with her due to her illness. My hope and prayer for the whole Trimper family is that you will always hold Maddie deep within your hearts and that you will be able to move on and adjust to this "new" life that has been dealt to you. You all have the ability to give so much more insight to others. It will just take time to be ready to do that. Take time now for yourselves. Learn to enjoy life again. No time can heal a wound like this, but people say it does get easier. When my dear friend lost her daughter Ruthie 23 years ago, neither of us knew that grief was supposed to have a time stamp on it, so we talked every Friday night for years - it helped her, she said, for that little while. Maddie reminded me of Ruthie when she was little. As I say, it's been 23 years, and I still miss Ruthie. So I already know that I will always miss our Miss Marvelous Miracle Maddie Madhatter Monarch, Magnificent Marathonist. Always.

Jane and Jeff, no "one year anniversary" will stop our prayers for you and the boys. I'm glad that Max has that sparkle, that Sam has those friends, and that Maddie's candle is still glowing.

I don't come here often...it is hard to go back to transplant times. Your "last" entry says it all...I have the same feelings...stuck in grief land...wondering if it will ever get any better. We too are coming up to the 1st Birthday in Heaven...just past Lane's earthly birthday. I will have to say that I was amazed at the feelings that I had on that day...actually feelings of gladness for him...yes, sadness for me...but, gladness for him...to think of all that these kids are seeing...what they are doing...and how healthy they are...they certainly don't miss us as we miss them.

I find myself thankful that I only had one son affected with ALD...but, like you...we miss the one that isn't with us...there are times I wonder...why...there is no explanation...God knows the purpose...and His ways are always right...if we understand or not...

God knows that you aren't giving Him the cold shoulder...He knows that we need time to adjust to such a tremendous loss...He knows because He also had a Son to die...not from some disease that just happened...but for each and every one of us...

I would love to hear from you sometime...it has been a long while since we were on 5200 together and I hope that you remember me...

We will be praying for you as the day approaches...we are just a couple of days later...so, please remember us in your prayers as well. You aren't alone in your suffering...I hope that brings you some sort of comfort.

I'm so extremely sorry to hear this update about Don. If it's any consolation, I've spent many a time in ICU with lymphoma, and I'm still here after 10 years. I know that his and Marcia's tremendous faith in Christ will give them amazing peace in the midst of another storm.

Confused?

But when Jesus turned and look at his disciples, he rebuked Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” Mark 8:33

Jesus called Peter, Satan. Certainly this rebuke shocked him. Why was it necessary?

Peter had just made a good confession. However, he did not comprehend what it actually meant. He failed to see the connection between Jesus being the anointed Son of Man and the need for him to suffer and die on the cross. In his confusion, Peter actually tried to make Jesus into something he wanted him to be.

At times, I can fall victim to Peter’s confusion. I know Jesus needs to be in my life. At the same time, I try to make him into what I want him to be. I want him to answer my prayers according to my will. I want him to make my life as comfortable as I would like it to be. Just like Peter, I need to be brought back to the truth. I need Jesus to be the Savior he came to be. I need him to carry my burden of sin. I need him to pay the debt I couldn’t pay. I need him to reconcile me to God the Father. Certainly, I need Jesus for everything in my life. First and foremost, I need to have him as my Savior.


Prayer:
O precious Jesus, I need you to be my Savior. Through your holy Word, remove any confusion I may have. Let me see you clearly that I may trust you confidently. Amen.

Even though I don't really "know" you, but have enjoyed the little time I've interacted w/ you at Duke, etc....the thing I like most about you is your honesty, and I'm sure God does too. I have always appreciated your courage and the honesty in your entries.

I understand a bit about "relationships" that sometimes just need to end to fully move on. While I would miss checking up on you and your family, I will continue to lift you up in prayer.

There have been times when my relationship with God has been quiet, and a bit distant due to something I was going through. Sometimes, for long periods of time, I just didn't have the words to say anything to Him. He never abandoned me during those times, even when it meant giving me time to draw close to Him again. I guess what I am trying to say is that I believe God understands where you're at and is big enough to hold you quietly in His hand while you move forward on your own timetable.

Jane,
So many times you have echoed my feelings about the grief process. I am further along and will tell you that the one year anniversary does not mark the end of the grief process. You do learn to live with it as you are doing, but there are always what I call "time bombs." It's okay to cry and scream, it's part of life as we know it now.

I understand your reaction to the woman's comment. I am truly blessed that my surviving children are healthy but neither of them are a replacement for the one I lost.

I ultimately had to delete Alex's webpage to break my "relationship". My only sadness is the loss of contact with our Duke friends.

God will wait on you. He did me. I finally feel like praying and teaching Elizabeth and Daniel to pray. They aren't old enough to ask too many questions about Alex. Elizabeth looks at his picture and calls his name but doesn't understand. Of course, Daniel wasn't born when Alex was alive. It will be tough to explain that God allows children to die, but one day that question will have to be addressed with them. God will guide me - I'm sure.

I think of you often. Don't give up. The road is rocky but it still continues to be a road.

I am selfish enough to say that I will miss you so much, but understand your need to close this chapter of your life. During the years and during Maddies struggle you were so wonderful at keeping us informed. For that I thank you. I will light a candle in Maddies memory on her 1 year anniversary. If Jeff sees fit, It would be nice to see the boy's school pictures posted. I too have a hard time praying at times----sometimes I just don't understand why things happen as hard as I try. I know those who lost children years and years ago and their greiving has never stopped, there is no time frame. Love to you all.

Jane - I know you are getting lots of response from your entry - how hard it must have been to write. I can't say I know how you feel, because I did not lose a child. My family went through some rough times - my mother died about 2 weeks after my husband lost a lung to cancer. During those weeks and months (still) of grieving - I felt I could not pray. I felt so dry inside. My friends said don't worry about it - we are taking care of that for you - God knows you are hurting and he hears your cry through us. Also a priest told me once that even though your prayers might feel empty, it's like a freight train traveling the track with empty cars - even though they are empty - they are still going in the right direction. You never have to apologize to any of us. I check your site periodically to see how the boys are doing. I know how Maddy is doing - she's with God waiting for you all. May God bless you all and may He keep you in His gentle hands.

Dear Jane, I read your entry and have felt all that you say. I can tell you I know exactly how you feel...I left the caringbridge for awhile and know feel I need it back. I just passed my 3 year anniversary of Addison's passing and I think it was the hardest and I cry more know than I did before. I remember when he passed and someone said to me at the funeral "Atleast you still have two children." I said, "Oh, and if you had to give up one of yours which would it be." I know it wasn't right but it hurt so bad and sounded so stupid that someone would say that to me I just let it out. We are only human. I hope we hear from you again. I check on you so often just because I care. Your family was always so kind. We have entered a community of all our own...A community we would hope would be zero. (The community of parents who have lost there children.) I am sorry for rambling, just remember you are loved in Minnesota.

I am someone who understands your feelings due to the fact that I lost my daughter one and one half years ago to MLD. Do not be so hard on yourself. No one should understand the pain that we are in and making sense of all of this is at times - almost impossible. Thinking about you today... wondering how the new school year is going for the boys as well as Mom and Dad.

Looks like it was an adventurous summer in many ways. Max - you look good on Safari. Wait, I think it was Australia, so you must be on a "walk about"! Sam, what a ham! Looks like you got the up close and personal seat on the Mackinac Island horse carriage. Your mom chose well - far away from the horse's rearend!!!! One of the things you just have to love about Mackinac Island - the unique smell combo of horse and fudge!!

I know it is not even remotely the same - but I miss Maddie. Praying that you feel her in your heart. I know you would give just about anything to feel her in your arms.

Hello. My name is Julie Bihn and my daughter Dakota had a cord blood transplant at Duke with Dr. K in january of this year. I came across your sight through researching about the recent study being done with Dr. K and Dr. Beam. My daughter has Juvenile Onset Tay Sachs. I have not had time to read through your entire journal but I intend to and from what I've read so far I am already touched and blown away by the work you have done as parents, and as "researchers". Your children are beautiful, and I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. We have many friends from 5200 who are our angels now.
Dakota just got to come home a couple of weeks ago and is doing pretty well. If there is anything we can do for you from Ohio please let us know. You are all doing a remarkable job.

It is good to hear that you have had a much deserved nuturing summer. Healing is a long process. May the new school year be good to all of you.

Regarding stem cell research. Our President was not elected because he is a wise man. That chartacteristic has been woefully lacking in him and his team throughout his presidency.

Last week Steve Inskeep, scientist, was on NPR talking to Kathy Hudson, director of the Genetics and Public Policy Center at John Hopkins University and announced a new way to make human embronic stem cells that avoid harming embryos. They are currently informing Congress and hoping to get enough support to override a Presidental veto should another one occur. If interested, maybe you could get a pod-cast of that interview.

Perhaps you would be interested in having your "warrior-supporters" wage a telephone campaign to support this.

Glad to hear that Sam's braces are helping him. Our Andrew has been in and out of braces since birth. Our experience with them is that they have helped him immensely. He went 6 months without them and during that time the position of his feet started to get awkward. He has a new pair now (called Sure-Steps)which put his foot in the correct postion. Like you, we were worried about running, climbing, etc and they have only helped with these things.
So my point is to let you know that orthotics such as Sam's really do help :)

Thanks for the great update, it sounds like you have had a busy, productive and wonderful summer. I am sorry to hear Sam needs the braces but so glad they are available and are working so well for him with no problems. A motorized wheel chair will be great for Max, the things the wheel chairs can do now are amazing. It is amazing how much we miss when we lose a child, things they did or said that we didn't even notice when they were with us. It is a hard thing to cope with, I don't know how we would do it without God showing us the way. The new pictures are not up yet so I will check them out later. Please visit www.stempac.org ...it's a political movement that was started by my brother when Benjy was diagnosed with Tay Sachs. Thank you for posting the article. I'm heartbroken that our President vetoed the stem cell transplant bill. Here in North Carolina, I'm praying that SOMETHING will happen so that these embryos (that are to be discarded) can be used to save lives. It's a totally different story when it's YOUR child or grandchild who needs the transplant.

Wow! I wish we could sit around on the porch watching storms come in. It has been 109 degrees at 9 PM here in hot California! The days reach 118 degrees! We're definitely having a very hot summer. I hope yours is a lot cooler!

I'm so sorry that politics hold back cures for our children! I came accross an article that broke my heart last year before my Maddy's second transplant....and a clinical trial for a vaccine that would have prevented Maddy from having a second transplant was denied funds because some doctor said that it wasn't important enough. Our children, and many others suffer because of politics! I'm so, so sorry!

Jane and Jeff......I, too, was disgusted by Bush's arrogance this week on the stem cell research issue; I won't say question because I don't feel that there should be a question at all if there is even a POTENTIAL to save sick children. I will continue to campaign and make my feelings known to those who have influence into those decisions.

My husband Steve is crazy like your dad about them - stays on the second floor deck until the last minute, and it faces west, too. KitKat is my favorite!!! Morgan Madeline is so pretty - you could almost smell her babyness. Sam, you are getting some muscle there - you and Mr Muscle Matt (Tomaino) really need to meet. I'm so glad that you made it and praying that all will go extremely well with both boys. I'm so sorry that going to Duke stirs up so much emotion, although I imagine that just about anything can do that. I have no doubt that you balance your conversations extremely well - you both have that gift.

Congrats to Cindy and Carl on the birth of their Princess. Morgan Madeline has such a great ring to it! I'm sure Maddie has finagled her way with the Lord and is stationed right beside Morgan's bed at all times. It just seems right.

Looking forward to great reports out of NC this week! Agreeing in prayer that Max's ride back home will be better. I sure feel for him. Sam, praying that your feet are better. Can't wait to hear about the human trials - I get so much joy just thinking about that!

Oh, it is hard to look at the front page, remembering that day well, and why that look. Lord, have mercy on our aching hearts. I often go to the pictures on my computer, determined to remember Maddie when she was smiling for every picture. MLD never got her - never got her for one day. Thank You, Lord.

I'm glad your Mother's Day wasn't any worse than any other, Jane. I prayed extra blessings for many of you that day - it just isn't right that so many families are aching on what should be a day of joy. But Jesus will right all the wrongs one day, and won't that be a glorious time!

It's so encouraging to hear that Dr K's people are that close to human trials! I can hardly wait! His timing is perfect, though, so we will trust Him for that!

I remember last year I especially loved the picture of Maddie holding her carefully wrapped package for Max. It speaks of her love for her big brother and how he was just Max to her - same as he always was. She is missed.

Happy Birthday, Max-a-million! Eleven is such a great year - the year you REALLY start giving Mom and Dad some trouble! :) I always tell people to take a mental picture of their child at 10, because you will see him again someday - at around 20! Until then, someone seems to have taken your kid and traded him for another one you don't know! But we expect better of Max, right? Right!

Jeff, most of us believed that Maddie would be healed. It never entered my mind to doubt it. Now we are the ones needing healing - our hearts hurt so much, and we aren't even family. We just feel like she was our child, too, in many ways. Your sharing her with us was the best gift ever, and we thank you.

I'm so glad that Max and Sam speak of Maddie with pride. Kids rock! Especially your kids.

I am happy to have read your message today even though it was a bittersweet message ~~ one of birthday wishes for Max and also one of missing Miss Maddie. Unfortunately, life doesn't always go as we want it to.

Is today (April 28) actually Max's birthday? It is mine. Tell Max that he will have to work extra time to catch up with me, though. I had never known more than just a few people born on 4/28 until recently. Now, every where I turn, there is another one. We are special people, though, and with our Taurus given stubborness, we can strive to great heights.

I was so glad to read about Sam's good report! I hope the worst thing he has to put up with from now on is the orthotics. Well, Rufus and Lilly are finally parents! Lilly had her baby boy on friday.
