I loved reading your note on the web page. You don't really know me, but I am your mom's cousin, Renee's sister and your dad is my Godfather (my dad was his brother, but he's in Heaven now). I haven't seen you since you were a tiny baby - and what a beautiful baby you were! I hope you're having fun with softball. My little boy Josh is 4-1/2 and is playing baseball for the first time this year. He loves it, but it's kind of funny because they play in the dirt in the outfield and run the wrong way when they hit the ball! Another son, Nick, is 16, and also plays baseball. He wants to play in college, too. It's his favorite thing in the whole world, even before his girlfriend and his truck! My oldest son, Chris, is almost 22 and married, with a baby boy. I am so sorry to hear about your experience. My husband works in Traffic for Sheriff's Dept and said it is people like that officer that give him(my husband) a bad name. He said that is the way most of the Abita cops are though. I sure hope that the police chief helps you out though.

What a horriable experience!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad he did not take you to jail. I hope you find your registration, you can get a copy of insurance from the insurance office, if he did take it. What a dirty cop. We went through Abita Springs last week coming home, I am sure glad we did not get stoped by him. Will be praying that every thing works out. I hope Haley dosne't have nightmares from this, I would sure tell the judge how much he scared her. It's stuff like this that makes kids think that cops are bad. OK, this one dosen't need to be a cop anyway. Let me know how it works out.

4 years remission, that means you are almsot 2 years Off Treatment. Right? Elizabeth will be Off Treatment for 6 months the 1st. I can't wait to make that 1 year off treatment mark. And God is so good. I remember what Ashton told you in the church that day. Remember what happened to us with Elizabeth's Red Blood transfusion? Such miracles.

Had to laugh about the "Happy Medicine". I take Celexa, thanks to childhood cancer. But hey it works for me. Anyway who could go through what we have gone through with out some kind of help?

I have updated Elizabeth's web page and added a couple of new pictures (if AOL coroperates with me) of the girls.

It was good to hear from you. We have been major busy here. Everyone has been sick. Connor is in the hospital for the second time in 2 weeks. He spent 5 days in came home for 8 days and went back in yesterday. I REALLY hope this isn't how our winter is going to be. Cameron got sick within hours of them getting home from the hospital and spent most of last week sick and at home. I came down with a NASTY cold which led to a NASTY bloody nose on Friday and will be home for the second day tomorrow. I had to go to the ENT today.
Anyway, loved your entry Lori. I always like to read what you write. You really do help those of us still going through it. We just had a friend from here relapse. Her name is Taylor and she is 2. She was diagnosed Sept. 8 2003 and relapsed in cns on Sept. 27, 2004. She will be going to transplant in a couple of months.

Hi Lori and Family! I only write the truth, well most of the time, I may exaggerate some things, but the truth is stories like Ashton's truly do give us hope. I am not good about signing in either but I do regularly check everyone for new updates.
Grand Cayman was WONDERFUL! EXPENSIVE but wonderful. We won't be able to go back for awhile but it was a much needed break.

Hey Webre Family! How the heck are you? I had to tell you, I was being nosey and read some of your guestbook entries. I saw that someone said that they were going to be in Destin too which made me think that you were going to be in Destin. So I read some of your past journals and then I remembered that I had read that before but had forgotten to sign in on that day. My point? My point is that my husband's parents own a condo down there and live approximately 5-6 months down there a year. Their condo is at Tops'l, if that makes sense to you. Anyway, maybe someday we can coordinate visits? I would love to get together with you. We are planning on August of 2005 right now. Connor will be done with treatment July of 2005. It will be a celebration trip. Destin, or "Papa Ray's Beach" as Connor calls it, was the last trip Connor took before being diagnosed with "The Beast". Anyway, had to stop in. Love the picture on the homepage. How gorgeous are those girls?

"The Strength of an Egg"

Parents of children with cancer are often referred to or viewed as having "strength like a rock". Albeit flattering it is not quite true. It is more like the strength of an egg. An egg you ask? Yes!
If you'll think about it, you'll see my point.

An egg has a polished, smooth outer appearance, with no cracks or weak spots visible. It seems almost inconceivable that the inside might not be
as smooth or solid.

Most children, at some point, are shown the famous egg trick. An egg set at just the right angle can withstand enormous amounts of pressure and cannot be cracked or broken. Yet the same egg, tapped gently at an even
slightly different angle, will break. The contents, once so neatly concealed, will come spilling out. The no-longer perfect shell will be crushed. It looks so fragile that it seems inconceivable that it ever held any strength.

A rock, on the other hand is solid all the way through. To break it is almost impossible. If you succeed, you will find that there is nothing inside but more rock. It takes a lot more than pure hardness to hold the "HAND OF HOPE".

Parents of children with cancer are not solid all the way through. We hurt, we fear, we cry, we hope. It takes a very careful balancing act to keep the shell from being shattered. "Balancing an egg" while running a household,
going for doctors' visits and hospital stays, keeping the family together, and holding on to the constantly unraveling ties of your sanity can be very tricky indeed!

Occasionally, the angle will be off and the shell will break, shattering hope and the neatly secured appearances of a truly fragile existence. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, though, parents of children with cancer will pick
themselves up and put themselves back together again.

It was nice seeing you all again. We broke a record at 47 boats and raised $2700 at the Junior Regatta. I tell everyone know that the first Regatta was hosted at Annapolis, MD. We are now working on our 12th regatta in New Orleans! This is the first year we hosted a regatta dedicated to the juniors.

Hi Lori. We are always praying for the kids whether they are on or off treatment. Either way cancer is in our lives forever. Whether it is a battle we have won but will always wonder if it will be back or if it is a battle we are fighting at the moment. Just because treatment ends doesn't mean we don't still have the scars from the fight. We are completely different people than we were when we started this. Please know you aren't alone. Connor hasn't ended treatment yet but I am already stressing about the day that he does. The nightly doses of 6-mp and weekly doses of MTX are my security blanket. Even the dang Nystatin. So, Ashton is a survivor, she is healed, and she will continue to do all of the cancer free things she should be doing. You are her mother and will continue to worry,you will continue to wish she didn't have to go through what she did, you will continue to wish she didn't have to have the kind of outlook on life and disease and death that she does, especially at her young age. While some may say don't worry so much, or the worst is over, or something to that effect, we know differently- No one knows these things, all we know is what we have been through and if you ask me we have earned the right to worry without beating ourselves over the head about it. So go ahead and give yourself permission to worry, be scared, whatever you have to do for you but know that Ashton is, as I said before, a SURVIVOR, a FIGHTER, a WARRIOR, and she is these thing partly because you helped her to find the strength to get through a battle that none of our kids should have to get through.

You know what? I showed your beautiful starfish picture to Julianna earlier tonight and you know what she said? She said "Hey, Patrick!"

You see, Julianna is a hard core Spongebob Squarepants fan (ok, so is her big brother and I!), and the gets so excited whenever she sees pink stars because they remind her of Patrick Star from that cartoon! Do you know who Patrick is? He's not nearly as cute as your starfish, let me tell you!

Hi Lori and Ashton. Ashton I LOVE your drawing of the starfish. Starfish are some of Connor's favorite things. Cool. Lori, I hope you do the marathon next year. We will definitely have to meet up if you do. I know what you mean about the training. I was able to do my 18 miler but Connor got sick after that and spent 9 days in the hospital then it was the last week of school before Christmas and being a teacher that is a busy time then it was the holidays and who has time to do any training then? Let me tell you, the half marathon finish line was looking PRETTY good to me. Either way, if you ask me to train for either the half or the full, when you have a sick kid doing either is definitely a good thing. Kudos to you for doing it. So, next year, it's a date then?

I couldn't agree with you more on the "correcting" issue. There were times I only got to the things that they need to "function in Society" with, the rest, well if you have never been there you will never understand. Amelia doesn't need 10 pairs of shoes....Amelia doesn't need to wear her ballerina barbie dress up dress all around, but she does!! You learn to pick your battles quickly!! And as for your relationship with Ashton, well....my mom is still my best friend!!!! Yes I guess it is true that our kids are spoiled and if I had it to do all over again.....I wouldn't change a thing. I never wanted to live with any regrets and when Marshall wasn't doing good and we didn't know if he was going to make it I can say that there was not much that I regreted. I hug my children( maybe 400 times a day) and always make sure they know I love them!!!

Hi Lori and Ashton. Lori, the marathon was phenomenal. Emotional to say the VERY least. What a truly wonderful experience. We are planning to do it again next year although I think I need a Donald Duck medal to go with my Mickey medal. Now that I have done the whole I think the half sounds like a good idea.
Thanks for signing. Congratulations on finishing treatment Ashton. Connor will be done July 2005. I am already nervous about that. March 10 will be exactly 2 years since he was diagnosed. Can't believe it has been that long.

Thanks so much for stopping by Morgan's site to offer words of encouragement. Ashton is truly a beautiful little girl and a walking testimony to the healing power of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We will keep your family in our prayers, especially as that nine month anniversary and the appointments approach. Ashton came off of chemo two days after Morgan was released from the bone marrow transplant unit. Morgan is nine months post transplant and we will be having scans in December.

Oh, you had me in tears there...plus the song that goes with it is beautiful too...makes everything extra beautiful and I just looked at the photos of the girls and couldn't help but cry... Hello Lori, Paul, Ashton, and Haley. It's been so long since I've spoken to you Lori, but it's good to hear that Ashton is doing so well off treatment. That is an absolutely adorable picture of her on the front of your page! Pink is definately her color.

Vanessa is doing very well OT too. Her doctor allowed us to stop the pentamidine breathing treatments to prevent pneumonia after only 3 months because her blood counts were all in the normal range. This past Monday she started on growth hormone therapy (if you recall she hadn't grown in like 3 years). Rather than a daily shot, she got a sustained-release form that's just given every 2 weeks. Thank goodness for that.

I am so sorry to hear about Paul's dad. Far too many people have to fight this nasty cancer beast. He will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope his radiation treatment goes smoothly.
