I know it's been like forever since I've visited you.
I have just been so busy.

We have come a long way since last Thanksgiving, sure hope that everything stays the same, and we never have to go back. Glad to hear things are going well with Louie. Know you are always in my thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine what you are going through or even begin to put myself in your shoes. I'm sure you are terribly lonely at times. I know I'm lonely for you! You are so brave Kerin. I hold much admiration for you and Mike and especially adorable Louie. Morgan and Abby are both so strong as well. So glad you get to come home for Morgan's birthday--she is so excited. The girls & Annabelle had a great time at Chuckie Cheese's Saturday night. After stopping for ice cream we didn't have Annabelle home until about 10:00 p.m.--needless to say the girls went down easy. Erin came over to play Friday night--the girls had a great time playing hillbilly family--Morgan was the Dad--Erin was the Mom and Abby was the baby. Terry is right-on, your girls are really great troupers through all this.

p.s. Grandpa said the girls made out better at Chuckie Cheese than he did at the boat.

We are so glad to hear the benefit went so well on Saturday. Also glad that you get a chance to go home again. Louie, hang in there tough guy! You have more people pulling for you and your St. Jude's buddies than you could count!

Kerin, Your co-workers at Fidelity did an awesome job last night. I cannot imagine all the work and extra time that went into organizing this event. I know Rene, Terri, Robin, and all the other people that helped deserve a lot of praise for a job well done. Everyone seemed to have a good time. It was fun for me to see Mike's friends they always make me laugh. There were some wonderful items in the silent auction. It was amazing to see all the things that were donated to benefit Louie. I wish someone would have thought to video tape it for you. Dad won a door prize and had to do the Hokey Pokey before they would give it to him. I also wanted to let you know how great your girls have been when I watch them. It's my boys that need a behavior modification plan (teacher talk for drugs just kidding). Abby let me brush her hair and put it in french braids. She looked too cute, but took it out in about 30 minutes. As always we are praying for you and Louie. Have a safe trip and let us know if you need us to help in anyway.

Kerin, I enjoyed chatting with you and Julie this morning in the clinic waiting room. Jill's counts are down after round 7 so we won't be out and about much this weekend.

I had tears in my eyes as I read Louie's journal entries. What an ordeal these kids go thru.

Just wanted to drop a note to say "hi". Kerin I know you get to come home and I'm sure you are so excited to see the girls and revive yourself a little bit. I wanted to share something that I found on Louie's friend Hanna's website. I'm sure the two of you have already seen this but it really puts things into perspective and I thought other guest on Louie's website could appreciate also. As strong as you have to be through all of this I know it has to be so hard getting through each day.

“The Strength of an Egg”

Parents of children with cancer are often referred to or viewed as having "strength like a rock". Albeit flattering it is not quite true. It is more like the strength of an egg. An egg you ask? Yes!
If you'll think about it, you'll see my point.

An egg has a polished, smooth outer appearance, with no cracks or weak spots visible. It seems almost inconceivable that the inside might not be as smooth or solid.

Most children, at some point, are shown the famous egg trick. An egg set at just the right angle can withstand enormous amounts of pressure and cannot be cracked or broken. Yet the same egg, tapped gently at an even
slightly different angle, will break. The contents, once so neatly concealed, will come spilling out. The no-longer perfect shell will be crushed. It looks so fragile that it seems inconceivable that it ever held any strength.

A rock, on the other hand is solid all the way through. To break it is almost impossible. If you succeed, you will find that there is nothing inside but more rock. It takes a lot more than pure hardness to hold the "HAND OF HOPE".

Parents of children with cancer are not solid all the way through. We hurt, we fear, we cry, we hope. It takes a very careful balancing act to keep the shell from being shattered. "Balancing an egg" while running a household,
going for doctors' visits and hospital stays, keeping the family together, and holding on to the constantly unraveling ties of your sanity can be very tricky indeed!

Occasionally, the angle will be off and the shell will break, shattering hope and the neatly secured appearances of a truly fragile existence. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, though, parents of children with cancer will pick themselves up and put themselves back together again

My daughter had a sinus infection that then caused brain abscess October 2003. She was in Children's Hosp. for 40 days. She is still receiving some therapies, but has recovered remarkably. Kerin...Cousin Myssi here from WV....well, I read the past journal entry and I had to write AGAIN. My son Ryan who was born with glaucoma in both eyes has had a terrible bout with his sight as well. I know it' such a small thing compared to what you are going through- and it has helped ME to gain strength from you and Mike. Kerin, from the time Ryan was a baby we have had eye surgeries and patches. Ryan also went through a bout with "use it or lose it." We began patching him daily....'round the clock. Believe it or not- children deal with that a whold lot better than you think. I know that it's a whole different ball game with Louie's situation, but I thought some words of hope would be useful now. Ryan reluctantly wore the patch, but got used to it. And it DID in fact save his sight in his eye. We STILL on occasion have to "patch" him when that eye becomes weak...but it has always worked for us. I hope that you have the same success. Louie just has to train that eye to work. God Bless You...we ALWAYS pray for your family. I hope to see you before long and meet Baby Louie. Stay strong- I KNOW you will. You are one of the strongest women I know! I love ya...and if you need anything- just let Aunt Glenna know and she will let me know. Love and Peace,

Kerin and Mike we miss you guys so much. It was great to spend some time with Kerin on Monday with Abby and Morgan. Kerin looks great and you could tell the girls were thrilled to see her. Abby was having a ball in the waves and Morgan is so tan from her vacation. Louie is looking as cute as ever. I love the pictures. We pray for him all the time. I told everyone at work about him (over 100 people) and several have included Louie on their prayer chains at their own church. I have a funny story to tell. Joe and I were at a sold out Reds game the night before the prayer service. About the 5th inning the two girls behind us were talking and the one asks her friend if she remembers Sue or Mike Hentz. Was so great talking to you Saturday--You sounded so up. They let me lead the church service Sunday (First time since my birthday). Told them how you were doing and how Louie was doing and how great the doctors were down there. What a beautiful prayer service at Blessed Sacrament this evening! Jim and I were so touched by the service and the outpouring of love and care from so many friends for all of your family. You guys are all amazing! I know giving Louie shots will be different than giving them to Al, (I vaguely remember Kerin being fairly young and administering shots to Al!) but most people never even have had a reason to be around shots and needles, so I know it'll hurt Kerin as much as Lou, but I'm sure Lou would much rather have Mom administering shots than a bunch of different people all the time. THE BRICK A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?" The young boy was apologetic. "Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do," He pleaded. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop..." With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother," he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me." Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message "Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!" God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not. Thought for the Day: If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring. He sends you a sunrise every morning. Face it, friend - He is crazy about you! Send this to every "beautiful person" you wish to bless, . God didn't promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way Read this line very slowly and let it sink in... Hey Handsome. Try this out!! You will love it.

Southern Biscuits with Sausage Gravy

1 cup plus 2 Tbsp flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
2 Tbsp shortening or butter
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 Tbsp shortening/butter (for frying pan)

Mix the dry ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Blend in the
shortening/butter until the mixture is coarse and grainy. Then,
using a fork, stir in the buttermilk. Do not overmix. Put out on
a floured board or marble pastry board and knead just a few times.
Pat out the dough to about 1/2-inch thick. Cut with a biscuit cutter
or glass. (Flour the cutter.) Do not handle the dough too much or it
will get tough. Use a heavy black iron frying pan. Place the 1 tablespoon
of shortening/butter in the frying pan and put the frying pan in the oven
for about 7 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and place the biscuits
in the pan. Turn each once in the oil and bake the biscuits at 500 degrees
for 10 minutes, or until light brown.

Sausage Gravy

While the biscuits are baking, cook some pork breakfast sausage in a
skillet. Do not drain off the fat. When the sausage is cooked, remove
it and set it aside. Put a couple of tablespoons of flour in the
sausage fat and stir to make a roux. (If you have some spare bacon
grease, add it for extra flavor.) Allow the flour to cook for a minute
or two, then add milk (preferably a high fat version) while stirring
constantly. Cook and stir on low heat until the mixture is thickened.

To assemble, split a biscuit, put a patty of sausage on each half, then
pour on the gravy.

Hey Kerin, it's jeanie again. you're probably sick of seeing my name. I have a easier recipe for sausage gravy. you just brown one pound of sausage in large skillet, DONT DRAIN GREASE, add about 4 or 5 large tbsp. of all purpose flour, stir with wooden spoon til it is mixed, then add enough milk to cover. let it start to boil, then simmer. I think Louie would also like chicken dumplings and they are so easy to make and should be easy on his stomach.

Two 14.5 oz. cans chicken broth, mixture of Bisquick & milk. one cup of bisquick mix then stir in enough whole milk to make mixture sticky.

Bring chicken broth to a rapid boil, then spoon in rounded tablespoons of flour mix. After all dumplings are dropped into boiling broth, cover, reduce heat to simmer and cook 20 minutes.

Here is a recipe for sausage biscuits and gravy that I haven't tried, but it sounds good, greasy and filling, and it's a little more intricate than the ones I usually make, so I think it will have more flavor. Louie is beautiful! I have only seen pics. He looks so much like Kerin and Abbie! The Albert nose! We all have it :) It sounds like St. Jude's is a wonderful place for families and young children. We are thinking of you often! I have worked with children with cancer and I know that they are much stronger than any of the adults I have seen. They are truly amazing and I know that Lou is as well, esp with parents like Karen and Mike. I love you guys! Ellen

2 buttermilk biscuits
2 breakfast sausage patties
1 tablespoon butter
4 eggs
2 slices cheddar
2 cups Sausage Gravy, recipe follows

Split the biscuits in half and set aside. In a saute pan, cook the sausage patties. Remove from the pan and place on bottom half of each biscuit. Add butter to the sasauge fat and melt. Crack the eggs into the pan and cook to desired doneness. Top the sausage with a slice of cheese and then top with fried eggs. Place the other half of each biscuit on top of the eggs and smother with the sausage gravy.

Sausage Gravy:
5 cups water
7 cups milk
1 pound pork sausage
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons pepper

Mix water and milk in a stock pot and slowly heat. Do not boil. In a cast-iron skillet, cook the sausage. The meat should be chopped frequently while cooking to give it a ground beef consistency. When the sausage is well done, carefully strain and save the grease and then add the meat to the water and milk. Put the grease back in the skillet over moderate heat. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper to make your roux. Cook this mixture until it will cling to the spoon and come off the skillet cleanly. When the milk and water mixture is just under boiling, stir in the sausage roux while turning off the heat to thicken the gravy.

12 cups or 12 servings

Was great talking to you this morning--So glad Louie likes sausage gravy & biscuits. The way I make it is to brown sausage in skillet drain grease, pour flour in separate bowl mix with enough cold water to keep lumps out--pour just enough to cover saugage and stir add just enough whole milk to get gravy as thick as you want--add milk as needed salt & pepper to taste--The pepper may be too spicy for Louie.
I'll guess on amounts, I never measure.
For one pound of sausage, maybe 1/2 cup flour-3 cups milk.
If gravy is too thin add a little more flour & water mix
If too thick add more milk.

I'm sure someone out there can give Kerin a easier to follow recipe.

I will pray for Ben & Easton every time I pray for Louie.

Ed and I just returned from Louie's prayer service at Blessed Sacrament. All the school children were there participating. It was a moving ceremony.
Ever since Amy Wagner (our daughter) told us of Louie's illness, we have been praying for him. I am a member in the St. Jude Society and have been praying to him (among others) for Louie's complete recovery. I am so happy that Louie is in St. Jude's Hospital. With St. Jude's help, I am confident that he will recover. There is such power in prayer. Your entire family is in our prayers.

Hey Kerin & Mike, This is Colleen, and I have been getting the email updates about Louie from Rene and Heather and have been praying ever since the first note I got.
