My deepest sympathy to all of you. I met Bob thru my sister Karla many years ago. I lived down the street from him in Orland and remember once a few years ago when he called me on a Saturday night because he was craving carrot cake! I immediately ran and got him one thinking it was the least I could do for him! He was such an amazing person and he fought until the end. He had such a loving and supportive family that many would envy. May you take comfort in the fact that he is at rest. God Bless you all

Just wanted to share a few thoughts about Bob. One of the things that always amazed me about Bob was his ability to make and keep friends long term. I first met Bob riding dirt bikes in Center Field - 1969 and we have ridden together thousands of miles since. We will miss him.

Dear Bob,

Words just cannot express how sad I am… I just heard that you passed away. The last time we talked you were feeling much better and looking forward to summer. You were cheering me up and being the best friend ever. Not a day has gone by that you haven’t been in my thoughts and prayers. I wish that I could have been there for you. I know that you are now at rest – in a much better place, but I miss you so much it hurts! What will I ever do without you? It was always such a comfort knowing that you were just a phone call away. I will forever love you and cherish all the great memories of the time we had together.

Dear Bob:

Now that you have left us I know you are in a better place. There are, however, a few things I would like to tell you. I believe that all of us make our mark in life in one way or another and in your case Bob you should be proud because the mark you left was Huge. You taught us all an important lesson on the value of life. Time after time when faced with a choice between pain and discomfort versus the easier alternative of giving up, you chose the more difficult route. You demonstrated that your love of life, your family and your loved ones were worth the pain and hardship. You fought when most people would have given up and your family stood with you every step of the way.

I can’t tell you how many times over the years I thought of you when I found myself dealing with some insignificant problem, the kind we all encounter on a day-to-day basis. I thought, be “Boblike”. I figured if Bob can find the courage to handle his incredibly difficult situation then I could certainly handle mine.

You taught us so much and you didn’t even know it. I guess what I am trying to say, Bob, is thank-you. Thank-you for being an inspiration to all of us. Thank-you for making it a little easier to deal with adversity and life’s challenges. I will think of you every time I am lucky enough to be “Boblike” and have the strength and courage to take the right path, not necessarily the easy path.

I know nobody tougher than Bob Spallina. It’s your turn to have fun now, Bob. You earned your eternal happiness. You will be terribly missed but never forgotten.

Your friend,
Dave

My DEEPEST condolences!

Needless to say I was overwhelmed at the news I read earlier this morning. I am thankful I saw Bob, and he saw me! This is hard for everyone...

At about the same time as Bob's transition on Sunday, my son came across my high school yearbooks in the basement. I noticed Bob wasn't pictured Jr. year. (an odd coincidence)

Bob Spallina is "safely home"...

Until we meet again, Love forever, Deb

To the Spallina Family-
I have been friends with Bob for a long time and we had some good times working together at Randolph. Bob has met my entire family and they all were very impressed with Bob's eye for decorating and what he did with the house in Palos and his townhouse in Orland. Bob will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never forget the battle he fought. I am sure Bob is at peace now and can rest easy.
The strength and support you gave Bob through his illness is amazing and everyone should hope and pray to have a familly like yours, that has shown such love.

I'm so glad I came to see you today. I only wish you were able to talk with me because there was so much I wanted to tell you. The most important thing was that you are a very lucky man to have such a loving and close family, but you already knew that. I also wanted to tell you that you are an inspiration to all that came in contact with you while you were ill. You will always be my hero Bob, and I love you very much. Hi Bobby! Not a day goes by without loving thoughts of you with hopes and wishes for better and better days ahead. Saturday night, WTTW aired the 1987 Roy Orbison special with Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and many more..... Remember the night at your place when we were able to enjoy your excellent surround sound stereo and watch the concert together? With stomachs full of El Cortez Mexican food, as I recall........... Come on Bobby!!!! Let's do it again!!!! You were so happy for us to watch it together and it was EXCELLENT! Stay strong Cuz. You know you're my idol. Keep your tenacity, your will and your faith. Better days are just around the corner. Love you, Cuz.... Mark says hi too and wishes you the very best. Thinking of you always.

Healing Prayer

In the stillness of Your presence, God, I feel Your healing life flowing through me now, bringing peace to my mind and energy to my body.

Enfolded in Your powerful healing love, God, I experience health and wholeness in mind, body, and emotions.

Thank You, God, for Your healing life that surges throughout every cell of my entire being, strengthening me and restoring me to wholeness.

To You, dear God, I release any concern about my health. I trust Your healing love and Your life-giving presence to renew me.

Dear God, I am open and receptive to Your healing power. Your light and life energize every cell of my being, and I am grateful. Amen.

From reading your journal it sounds like your putting up quite a fight. I wouldn't expect anything less from you. The girls ask about you and Zoe and that "cool yellow car"! I tell them when he gets back he can take you for a ride! When I come to visit, I thought I would bring some music for you to listen to and that beautiful chime box. Your so very brave and courageous...hang in there...so many people love you and want to see you smiling again!!

Hi Bob -- Just wanted to pass on my prayers for your quick recovery. You know that you will always have a special place in our hearts and we miss you here at Metra. Whenever I think of the "penny" story, I get this grin on my face remembering your response. You are a great guy who always managed to brighten my day. If only everyone could have the positive attitude that you do. I'm passing your e-mail on to Mr. Rickerson, our resident retiree, who is also greatly missed by all.

Bob, I haven't met you, but I've spoken to your sister Susan a couple of times. We were connected by a mutual friend, Rhonda Kottke. I met Rhonda when I was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia and needed a BMT. I had a matched unrelated donor stem cell transplant in August of 2005. I was back in the hospital for 7 weeks with severe acute GVHD and returned home right before Christmas 2005. It's been a little over a year and I'm feeling much better, but still dealing with a few issues. It is such a long journey filled with obstacles and little victories along the way. I was happy to read your CaringBridge site and see that you have been able to gain some weight. I just want you to know that I am thinking of you, praying for you, and hoping for the best possible outcome. For what it's worth, here are some quotes that helped me along the way and through some rough times; "All will be well", "Believe", "Never give up", "one day at a time" (sometimes it was literally "one moment at a time" for me), "just breathe", and Eleanor Roosevelt's "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' "You must do the thing you think you cannot do." Hold on Bob. From your website, I can see that there are many people surrounding you with love and support. Wishing you all the best, Betsy Lucas. P.S. Please feel free to contact me if I can be helpful in any way.

Hey Bob. I'm so sorry that anyone, especially someone like you, have to go through the things that you're going through. But just know that some of the best people put on Earth go through some of the most painful experiences. With that said, just know that you are one of those special people and God will pull you through. Just remember it is HIM that has kept you here this long. I know I'll see you again. Hopefully sooner than later. You are a very cool person, and I know you have the power to overcome this. I will always keep you in my prayers. Stay strong and come back home. (Metra) HaHa.

P.S. It takes a special person to make God to want & use, to show his true power. You CAN beat this. And when you do, you'll be a true, living miracle!!!

Hello Bob!
I just learned that you are back in the hospital from my buddy Chuck the Cop at Randolph. My wife and I visited Randolph Street the week before Thanksgiving and I immediately thought of you. Boy, that place has really changed.

I will always remember you in your little window at Lost and Found on the north side of the gates. I used to stand on the outside of your window and you and I would ogle the girls as they passed. Of course, that was during my single days. I've been married for a couple of years now and I am enjoying the good life here in Arizona.

I remember you always saying you wanted to get those 30 years in. Its definetly worth the effort Bob! You always managed to finish what ever you started. I would bet that you can get over this illness too!

We had many a laugh together. I still have that Mukai hanging on the wall that I got from you.

Hang-in-there Bob

What an inspiration you are to anyone who knows you and what you have been through! I think and pray for you often. Your family is also amazing. How all of you have pulled together! But without your smile and positive ways they would have had a more difficult time. Your dad still finds time to send his the best of his e-mails. Your mom acts as if she doesn't have any aches or pains.

Hey Bob,

Keep up the fight. Try to eat & get your strength back. I know this has been really hard, but I also have faith that you can do it! Remember when you hung that funky chandelier up for us on Wabansia? I'd spent all that $$ on that thing & no one was willing to try to hang it for me because the cieling was so high & you had to lean out over those circular stairs... And there came Bob, on the job to paint and did what everyone else was afraid to even try! I was so scared you were gonna fall, and said, "just forget it", but you were like, "Oh, I can get it.." & wouldn't give up until you had that damn thing hung. Dave & I never forgot that. Guess it's just who you are, huh? So, keep showing us how it's done, o.k. Bob?
We love ya,

You have to eat!!! - When you are ready for visitors, I'll drive down and bring you a carrot cake.

Remember that time a few years ago when I still lived in Orland Park and you called me to bring you a carrot cake (had to be frozen!) with cream cheese frosting? I was so happy to do that for you!

Get stronger every day - there are so many people praying for you!

Hi Bob, this is Rosalinda. I have really been thinking and praying for you. I hope you're doing better. I'm sorry I haven't had the opportunity to write to you sooner but I want you to know that you have always been in my prayers. Everytime I go to church I put a prayer request for you that God will strengthen and heal you. I believe in miracles and I know that nothing is impossible for God. I wanted to know if I would be able to call you between the hours of 8:45-9:05 on Sunday morning because at that time at church we are able to call someone on our cell phone that needs prayer and you wouldn't have to say anything just hear our pastor pray for you live during our church service. If there is a way for your sister or yourself to let me know if this would be okay you can email me back at rosy0217@sbcglobal.net I hope to hear from you and always remember that you are being prayed for everyday.
With love from your friend,
Rosalinda

Hey Bob! You know there are other ways to get your own website! I want to thank you for placing my day in perspective today. Here I am running around and complaining how busy I am with my new position at the bank. Task after task after task. Doesn't even compare to all that your are once again enduring. I have to say I have never admired a person more than I do you. Your determination to beat this demon truly says something about your character. I should be so lucky to have half of your courage. It was great seeing and chatting with you at the wedding. Your dancing wasn't so great (and it had nothing to do with the hip, it was the rythem sir) but, you made up for it in how handsome you looked. All those ladies surrounding you! I'm looking forward to getting a ride on that bike when you and Frankie make the trip to Bernie's in the Spring. I programmed my BlackBerry to give me a little Bobby Beep each day. If you are up at 6am know I'm thinking of you and wishing you the best each time. Is that tacky?

I am sure you know that the prayers of all the family are constantly being offered in your behalf and that they will be answered! Today's darkness will be transformed into tomorrow's sunshine, so practice your winning smile. Most important, reflect upon the immeasurable love that is shown by the multitude of friends and well wishers recorded here on your website. Hi Bob! I am catching up on the last few days - sounds really rough with the fever and nausea. I am thinking of you always. Boost shakes - that brings me back. I can't stand the vanilla flavor... chocolate was okay. But if it's a matter of a tube down the throat or a boost shake, I would choose the shake every time!! (I might even drink it straight from the can...)

I'm going to send lots of energy and prayers towards getting that white count up and getting a good engraftment. You have been through so much, and I know you will keep fighting. All my best thoughts are with you.

Hey Bob -- Lisa forwarded me the info on your guestbook -- what a great idea!! I must say that your picture still shows you as handsome as ever - nice tan...the way you got it is not the best, but, hey, at least you're not all white and pasty like you haven't seen the light of day.

Well, here at Metra, the world (okay, my world) is being turned a little topsy-turvy with the retirement of Mr. Rickerson. His wife threw him a surprise party on Saturday and, believe me, he was surprised. You know how he is always so perfect....well, he had on a Cubs jersey and jogging pants with those white deck shoes. Dave Rubino said that he looked like a patient from a psychiatric ward (no belt or laces)....but his hair still looked good as always. That celebration will be followed by a Chili cook-off and then... a retirement party at Mangiano's. You know that, with us, it's all about food. Speaking of food, what's this with you not eating. Do you need me to send you some of my brownies or chocolate chip cookies???? Just say the word and they will be enroute!

When you get back, you'll notice a few changes. I got a promotion with duties added but I'm still a part of your life, so don't worry.....

I miss you and will always keep you and your family in my prayers. Take care of yourself and remember.....cookies for the asking anytime, anyplace...just send an address. (even if you need to just use them for bribery or as an intro to meet a nice young lady).

In addition to including you in my daily prayers, I promise to say a quick prayer for you every time I hold a penny in my hand.....you see, I told you they were worth a lot!!! Every time I think of that story from so long ago, I smile...hope you do too.

One of my favorite quotes by Camus: "In the midst of winter, I finally learned that in me there was an invincible summer." You have always stayed strong through it all and you will do it again this time. You have the warmth of summer from your loving family and friends, and your own faith and determination. Keep it up!

We are all fortunate enough to look around and see and feel your presence . . . at my mom & dad's house with your beautiful stained glass artwork hanging right in the entrance . . . at Franki & Elisha's with your unique and elegant artistic work surrounding us. We have been inspired by your love of photography, your interior decorating skills, your artistic nature, your love of music, and even your shopping skills (LOL). Dear Bob, I don't really know you personally, but have gotten reports about you and your strength of courage and amazing survival spirit, from your sister, Susan, over the years. I'd like to ask you a favor. As soon as you're up to it, PLEASE call Cubs General Manager, Jim Hendry, and INSIST that YOU be the new Manager. Forget Lou Piniella. We need someone with the EXTRAORDINARY, God-like, strength of courage and survival spirit that only you could bring to the team! We need a winner in there!!!! I'm rooting for you, Sandy Weissent

Hey Bob....ol buddy...ol pal.

I see your website is back in operation....that's good for me, because I think about you and would check it out from time to time and was wondering what was going on. I was so pleased to see the photos...what a beautiful family! Congratulations to your sister Sue on her marriage. She is a beautiful bride. You look sooooo great, too!

This is a difficult entry for me. I want you to be healthy and well. You are such a strong guy and you always made me smile. You are forever within my thoughts, and I trust that God knows what he is doing.

I want you to know that I will NEVER forget you and that I have hopes to reunite with all my friends very soon who have molded my life.

I was in Chicago Heights a couple weeks ago, at Marion High School. My daughter is 16 and is on the St. Viator Varsity tennis team. She plays very well. I was there on a Friday and Saturday for a tournament. I haven't really spent any time in that area in ages, and it was wonderful for me. I didn't realize how nice that area still is. I took her by H-F. (I'm sure she didn't care...but I did!)

It's unbelievable how time passes, but it really seems not that long ago that we were all hangin!...huh?! We gotta hold on to those great memories.

I miss you all so much and really love you.

I send you a great big hug and will hold you close in thoughts. Keep going strong.

Lots of Love,
Deb

Bob,

It was so wonderful to see you (& try to keep up w/ you on the dance floor!) at Susan's wedding! You are always in our thoughts & prayers. My Dad is fighting cancer now too. He just finished 7 weeks of daily radiation & is taking an oral chemo called Temador. He had surgery to remove a brain tumor in August. Your strength & courage are an inspiration. Hope you don't mind - I've used you as an example to him as someone who keeps beating the odds.
Hope you are feeling well again soon! Love, Leanne & Dave

In Chicago, now. Saw your mom today at the luncheon. She reported that you were getting stronger. She explained that Susan has been able to get rid of the computer virus and has not been able to update the journal.
Nothing in the fashion show appealed to Mom or me. All at our table wore black, not planned, except the two younger girls who warked with Phyllis T at the cancer center. What does that tell you?
Food was good, company even better.
Keep strong.

Arrived back from Colorado and sent you a message about meeting Joel. When I checked today I found that my message never came through. Joel and his two youngest came over to the hotel. We had a nice time filling in the years. Brittany had just been to her gymnastic class. She spoke of the possibility of getting a scholarship and was considering a college in Minn. Cassidy delighted us with her giggles and enthusiasm. She is going to be the lead in a Beverly Cleary play. Told Joel he looked the same. (didn't say that I hadn't aged a bit, however!)
They wanted to know how you were doing. Told them I hadn't seen you, but that you had been improving slowly, but had the determination to take giant steps in your recovery.
We all pray that you continue improving. You are an inspiration to all of us who less obstacles to surmount.

Just returned from Colorado. Saw Joel and his two youngest. They are lovely girls. Brittany had just returned from her gymnastics. Told her how Mark used to flip across the family room floor for my dad. Wasn't much room but you know Mark. He was ( and still is) ready for any challenge. Brittany has to begin planning for college. She said she was looking into Minnesota where she may be able to get a scholarship for gymnastics. Cassidy was a delight, not the least bit shy. She is going to be the lead in a Beverly Cleary play. Told Joel he looked the same. We talked about relatives and tried to get the cousins aligned- second cousins, once removed or whatever.
They wanted to know how you were doing. We all hope that the days are brighter and that you are stronger every day.

Hope the Sox go on to the World Series. Haven't read the newspapers because I was afraid the Sox wouldn't win their division. That other team in town didn't make it I presume.

It's a beautiful day in Williams Bay. I went with 2 friends to see a designer house where Northwestern Academy used to stand on the shores of the lake. Six bedrooms on 3 levels with closets galore. Even I would never be able to fill them all. Assessments of $1000 a month include the use of the clubhouse, pool, bocce, tennis courts, children's playground, the landscaping and snowplowing, the use of a fleet of 11 boats. Wow! The tzxes are only $40,000 a year. The home sells for $3,500,000. Now what were we doing there?
Hope to hear that you are continuing to improve.

Back in Chicago. Watching the triathalon bikers going down the outer drive. There isn't a traffic jam (yet!) but there is a definite slowdown going north. The mayor sure likes physical competition and seems to regularly close down the streets. He likes festivals, too, and creates traffic problems with the many different ones. Oh, the problems of living in downtown Chicago!
Hope your days are getting more comfortable. Remembered you today at mass.

All right, it's Thursday night and I am wondering what your choice in food will be. I'm sure you have several items in mind so remember, you waited so long you can afford to be picky. In fact, just have several things and only take a bite or two out of each so you can have it all. Oh, don't forget and have a Black Cow for dessert. I miss those and they just aren't as good without your company. I also miss the way you laugh.

Back in Wisc. I'm the social committee of one and member of the condo board. Had the "Taste of Willabay" gathering on our complex lawn. Ordered for 100, but had 125 guests. I guess people were waiting to see if it was going to rain. No walk-ins will be permitted next year. Had games and children running all around. Bocce ball was played. Never heard of bocce ball competition until I taught on the East Side. Guess it is an Italian tradition that our ancestors didn't adopt.
You are still enduring procedures that I can't even imagine going through. When I read that you were looking forward to "real" food I realized that you were possibly on a feeding tube or drinking those "delicious" milkshakes. If you can't eat all of the lasagne your friend is preparing for you, perhaps you could share with some cousins you might know.

I hope all continues going so well for you!

Was in Seattle for the weekend for the White Sox game. Met up with my niece Laura and her husband who traveled from their home in Portland for Sunday's game. Couldn't believe that her tickets were only 4 aisles away. You would love the hills in the city. However, didn't see many cycles. They were probably on the mountain trails.
Sounds as if you are continuing to make progress, but what you continue to have to cope with!

Hey Bob,
I have been working alot so I don't get a chance to ride my bikes. That way you aren't missing anything. My mom and sisters were in this last weekend. We had a good time and a pig roast on Saturday. It's been pretty hot here. I was glad to hear from you. Sorry I couldn't talk. You are sounding great. Charlotte brought her baby with her when she came out. Nancy Doyle is going to help babysit when Charlotte and the boys go to Italy with me in September. So I know you can't ride your bike but I can't figure out what my excuse is. I have been stealing pictures off your web site for my folders. Isn't it nice to have a great family. You can just feel the love in the pictures. I haven't seen Lincenberg this summer either. Alright Bob, I'll write later. Remember, you have a great fan fare in Colorado. Celeste says hi. Lates.

Bob,

It's been 10 days since I've signed your guestbook, however, I look in on you almost everyday. And I pray for you everyday. First thing in the morning when I'm taking my shower...that's when I talk to God about you. I love you and still pray that you will continue to improve and improve and improve and improve...

My birthday is a week from today. I'll be 49! Can you believe that. Good thing you never got serious about me...you'd have an old lady now!

Keep getting better and always remember that I'm thinking about you! Remember those split runs of mine?

Reading the journal that indicated that you didn't know how your dad could keep up with your schedule. He's young! He's only about ten years older than I am. AND I AM YOUNG!
Have to become more knowledgeable about "counts" so I know if your blood reports are good or bad. Perhaps Susan can give us all a lesson on one or her updates. She does an excellent job of describing all the processes you have been exposed to in the last months.
Hope today is a good day. Prayers

Bobbo, (I just made that up now), you may have heard I have a regular job now, working downtown again. I also just made an offer on a house in Naperville and waiting to hear if they accept. You would be proud of me and my negotiating for the best deal routine being as you are a savvy financial negotiator yourself.
Gillian says hi, she is getting quite tall. She is also challenging everything I say. If I say the sky is blue, she says no it isn't. If I say stay out of that nail polish, she gets into it. If I say eat your chicken before your french fries, she eats only the french fries. And she is only 3. Cats are so much easier-they don't talk back.
As soon as you are unquarantined, we will come visit. Gigi had a great time at your place.
Take care of yourself, don't eat Cary's frozen tuna casserole (she never could cook very well), and if you can eat ice cream I recommend Ben & Jerry's if you can't get OBWERWEIS.

So wonderful to hear you had good news on the 4th!!! I continue to think of you and pray for you everyday. Stay strong and positive. I want to see you soon!!!

It's ll:40 p.m. and I have to be us at 4:30 in the morning for work. Don't know what I'm doing sititing here at this computer terminal. I'm tired but just couldn't sleep so I got out of bed a couple of hours ago. Going to go back and try again.

At least the Taste is over. Thank God for that! What a week...first the bridge fire then the storm damage at 59th street. I'm due downtown at 11:00 a.m. but didn't get there until l:00 p.m. Good ol Metra treated us typically (like red-headed stepchildren). Also the heat was torture. Had to deal with alot of unhappy, hot, tired, very impatient passengers. Whew!!!

Take care of yourself and, as always, remember I love you!

Spent a beautiful night on the birthday celebration cruise on the river, along with your mom and dad. Your mom sat and enjoyed the trip; your dad spent some time at the bar. He kept telling me the drinks were cokes.
Glad to hear that your news on Friday was positive. Keep moving on that straight path. You are thought of and prayed for each day.
Friends of mine took the train in from Olympia Fields on the 3rd to join us for the fireworks at the Yacht Club. The trip in was fine, but I haven't talked to them about the trip home, as yet. Was reading the entry from your friend who was working on the train trips that night and was reminded of my friends' venture into Chicago.

Hey Bob,
I've been watching your site everyday and waiting to hear some news. I'm sure Susan has been very busy. I'm sorry to hear that you're having a bad week. But just remember you've got a lot of people out there praying for you and it's going to get easier.

Well it's another July 3rd at Metra and I'm sure you can remember how crazy it gets around here, and this is on top of last weeks Riverdale Bridge fire. In all my years at the IC and Metra I have never seen any service disruption like the bridge fire. It was quite impressive how they built the new bridge in 8 days.

Take care of yourself, and remeber I think and pray for you often.

Hi Bob!
I am sitting here in Litchfield with my mother who has come for a summer visit from Phoenix AZ. I am sharing your website with her and we wanted to send you our best wishes. As we were visiting about life back in the 70's, we had to smile as mom remembers you as the sweet guy who road his motorcycle up our driveway with his red-headed friend! That was early in your bike riding carrier, glad to know you still enjoy the sport so much.

Prayers and all the best as your treatment continues!

Bob,

Hey Sweetie! I pray that you're doing well this morning. It's been a week since your journal was updated but I know it's a busy time for everyone. I hope it's been busy for you too since that would probably be a positive. We want ALL POSITIVES!

Tomorrow is July 3rd...fireworks (ugh). It is however, going to be very profitable for me. The RR is doubleing (sp?) me out tomorrow. I work from 3:52 am til about 8:00 am on my regular job then I'm going out again around 4:30 pm to work the fireworks. Should get downtown around 6:00 pm then take one of the extras back home, sometime between 10 and midnight. That means 8 hours for the regular job, 12 hours for the fireworks. But the really sweet part is that I'll get paid to stay home on Friday, the 4th! Eight hours regular pay plus 8 hours holiday pay. I remember well when you used to work your buns off during this time of year. You were a permanent fixture at Randolph street then they'd send you the Van Buren to boot! I often wondered how you did it...you were always on the ball, that's for sure!

I know from your journal that you're still on the ball (bicycling, etc). Some things never change and I'm sure that that and all the prayers are what has gotten you through. So hang in there, know that we love you and continue to pray for you.

Love,
Elaine

I see Terry's sister Charlotte pretty regularily these days. She and I live very close to each other, and her son AJ babysits my daughter quite often! Isn't it a small world.

I am very thankful for all my great friends from high school, Bob, and you were very prominent in my life back then. I always get a smile on my face when I think back to the times we had - you, Terry, Cary, Patti, Sue, Cathy, Mark... Anyway, thankyou for those great memories. I can tell from reading through this guestbook that you have continued to collect great friends through your life. You hang in there, we all need you. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Sounds like the prayers and well wishes are doing their job. I continue to pray that you get stronger and stronger (being the stud that you are, that's probably a given). I love you much and think about you every day.

Last week I asked about donating platelets and someone responded but I didn't understand. Do you still need them?

The Taste of Chicago starts Friday. I know you don't miss that mess!!! Also, the burned bridge at 137th street doesn't help matters.

Bob,

Wow, it's been a while! I spoke to Lonnie Ray about you yesterday and today she brought me your web site info. I currently work the first train out of Michigan City at 4:02 a.m. and Lonnie rides it to work.

I'm very much ashamed to say that I actually stopped asking people about you some time ago for fear of the worst! But I should have known better! I've read your guestbook and definately agree with everyone else. YOU ARE DEFINATELY THE PERSON TO BEAT THIS. You can do anything you want to do, Bob, and I can't help but feel that you were a very special chosen person to go through this tragedy. You will be healthy soon and can make a difference to alot of people. There's nothing more inspiring that someone whose been there! The only thing that I can think of that's better than that is someone so incredibly BEAUTIFUL whose been there!

Reading all these guestbook entries from your friends and family members who've mentioned bike riding certainly brings back wonderful memories for me. We certainly had some wonderful afternoons together, didn't we? Gary and I have been together for 6 years already (married for 4). I can't believe where all the time has gone. Could have married you if only you'd been willing to give up all the other women!!!

Seriously though, Gary sends his best too and wants you to know that he is praying for you.

I love you Bob and will be checking in everyday now that I know how to find you. Would be happy to have email from you anytime (heavenly65@attbi.com). And when you're up to real in-person visitors I'd love to see you.

Although I've never met your sister, I've decided from reading your web site that you and she must be alot alike. I don't have to tell you that you're fortunate to have each other. I remember well how fondly you spoke of your family back when we used to hang around together.

Love ya, Baby! Keep up the good work!

Hello again Bob! I hope everything works out with the cord blood. I know how unfun steroids can be. But like Mom said, I would be more than happy to help out with anything at all, anything! I've got my strength back no, no more worrying about white blood cells for me! Well, I hope everything goes well, and feel free to let me know if you guys need any help!

Hey Bob!!! We all think about you everyday and wonder how you are doing. I printed out your Journal today and thought I would bring it to Wednesday Morning Class at Espo's. Everyone asks how you are doing. Hang in there!! If you need anything let me know. I am AB Positive and have given platelets in the past. Would be willing to help if you want. Also I used to clean houses too. If your family needs help, let me know. Love you. Barb Kutlik

Continue to progress. You are often in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Bob, I met a friend of yours last week - Cori Holmberg. I began telling her a little bit about myself and when I mentioned that I had a stem cell transplant 5 years ago, at Loyola, she mentioned you to me. I just want to let you know that you are in my prayers. I also had Dr. Stiff as my doctor and still see him every 6 months. If you ever need someone to talk to who has "been there, done that", I would be more than happy to chat. I gave Cori all my contact info. Loyola has an annual Bone Marrow Transplant picnic every year usually late Aug./Sept. I made my first picnic 5 months after my transplant, so maybe I'll see you this year. Good Luck! Keep strong and keep smiling. --Judy

Sorry I missed your call. Went to the AMA Superbike races. Rode down with some crotch rockets and younger kids. Man, they sure can ride. (the kids) It must be the bikes or we would have been doing that stuff when we were young and stupid enough. Saw a couple crashes at the races. Whats the big deal, I can crash a bike. Anyway, if you can't go to the garage to wax the bike, you can always check out pictures of it. Now that I am still broken, I should have time to work on the dirt bikes. Talk to you later.

Bill and I had dinner at Smith and Wollensky on the Chgo. River last night. Met a young couple (your age) Ann and Bob from Homewood who were celebrating Bob's birthday. We started talking when Bob lit up a cigar and Ann asked if it bothered me. Of course, I said it did and the conversation began. Mentioned your courageous fight and the website. Ann was interested and took the web site address.
This morning was ugly but the sun is now shining. Hope your day was bright the entire day.

hey mr bob, i was real glad to hear from terry that you had gotten the transplant. you know everyone here in colorado is pulling for you. Moab was a great time this year, we camped right on the Kane creek trail which has about 60 river crossings on it. what a rush, crack the throttle, hit the water in a wheelie and the water splashes up and drenches you and your goggles so you can't see as you bash up the other side of the river bank.

Judy just forwarded us the website yesterday...What a GREAT way to show you how many people care for you and think about you. We have been reading all of the many entries in your guestbook and came to the conclusion (like we didn't know it already)...YOU ARE ONE LOVED PERSON!!!

Have been reading that you don't have much of an appetite...must be because Judy isn't one of the chefs at Loyola.

Stay strong because you are probably the only walking encyclopedia of BOTH Frank Lloyd Wright AND Harley Davidson Motorcycles on the face of the planet.

I bet you have the tightest abs in town about now! That is the only positive to throwing up. Continue to rest and sleep and you will get stronger. You always have in the past and you will again.

Love,

Hi Superman! When I read that you are riding your bike 5 miles I get tired! I can't even walk one mile on my treadmill - it must be boredom, even if it's positioned in my bedroom in front of the 6AM morning newscast! Well, when I read Susan's entry for May 7, and how you miraculously keep going, I had to cry. You are one amazing MAN! When you have recovered from all of this, your Angel, Susan, should take you on the talk show circuit to tell this story. Then you can make tons of money from your book and become a celebrity! God bless you, Bob. Prayers, hugs, well wishes, love.

Hey Trooper,
Still thinking about our "walk" tonight and thought tomorrow we should do a few more laps....what do you think? But next time, can I be the doctor? ha! ha! All kidding aside....you looked great (love the stubble), they said you're doing great, your smile was great...what more can I say? I'm so proud of you!!! Just keep that fight in you (as you always have) and know that you're going to win this battle!!!!
Love ya,

Hello Bob,

Well, it has been about 30 years since we have seen each other back in High School : ) Wow! that sure sounds unbelievable.

Anyway, Patti Waggoner sent me an email - she knows I'll pray for you - As I went through this web page you have such incredible support and devoted care givers... that's an answer to someones prayers.

Hi Bob!

Just cruisin' by to check on you today (kinda like a cyber-visit to the hospital). Want you to know that you're in our thoughts every single day and I've been asking Diane McClowry (my neighbor across the street) if she's heard from you personally. She and I had a garage sale this past weekend and I saw that foyer light you asked her to sell for you. It sure would have been perfect in her foyer! Wish I could have used it, but I'm more contemporary/modern. Anyway, she has an exercise bike that she didn't sell in the sale....thought of YOU! :-)) Keep up the good work and keep those spirits up too, Bob! (((((HUGS)))))

Hi Bob, I have been tracking your progress through Susan. Susan and I went to college together at Illinois State. I have offered to help back her up with her broker/print sales to help out while she is with you. She is not only beautiful on the outside, she is just as beautiful on the inside. She is a true angel. I know she will take good care of you and watch over things while you are going through the transplant process. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

Bobby

All most 40 years ago we met and my initial impression was that you were a man of integrity, conviction, and was someone who was willing to fight for what he believed in. If I recall correctly ever fight you entered you emerged victorious. Nothing has changed except the battles you face. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the miracles of modern medicine so that your record remains intact, 100% victorious. You have matured over the years into an incredible renaissance man. We hope and pray daily for your speedy recovery. Selfishly I want you to come visit us in sunny southern California, not just to visit and reminisce but so that my wife and son can get to know a great man that I am privileged to have as a friend.

By the way please tell the shutterbugs we want to see pictures of you with Mom and Susan :)

Our thoughts, love, and prayers are with you and your family

Hi there! Thank you for calling me. I am sorry I was not home. I am thinking of you all the time. Keep on keeping on... I know you can get through this. You are a very strong and wonderful person. Take each day as it comes and stay positive. You are such a "gift" from God and he will help you through this. Remember the "Footprints" poem. He will carry you through this tough time. He loves you very much and has wonderful plans for you. Pretty soon you will be home - riding your motorcycle and enjoying yourself. You have passed the hump and have the "will" and "power" to get back to yourself and your life. I will keep you in my prayers and am sending you lots and lots of hugs, kisses and smiles. You are such a wonderful person and friend! I love you very much and will be seeing you soon. God speed! Love, Laura :)

Bob, best wishes on your transplant. My family will keep you in our prayers. My wife underwent a successful MUD transplant at MD Anderson in Oct 2001. Today she painted my daughters bedroom and Saturday she cut the grass. She is fortunate to know her unrelated donor who lives only 100 miles from our home in Cary NC. Her transplant went very smooth. Wish you the best. You are starting a new life, enjoy it.

Like Candy Baldi, I too have a quote on my desk.
"I keep the telephone of my mind open to peace, harmony, health, love and abundance. Then, whenever doubt, anxiety, or fear try to call me, they will keep getting a busy signal and soon they'll forget my number."
Bob, what an amazing journey you have taken with Your Angel, Susan. God is watching and smiling on this wonderous day.

Hi Bob! What wonderful news today that this is all finally coming to fruition. You are truly blessed having a sister like Susan. Here is something I have posted at my desk:
"Optimism is one of the most important traits of a pleasing personality. But it results largely from other traits: a good sense of humor, hopefulness, the ability to overcome fear, contentment, a positive mental attitude, flexibility, enthusiasm, faith and decisiveness." And you do have all of the above. I wish you a complete recovery and offer many prayers. With love....

Bob,
Your will to live and struggle through this whole ordeal, in and of itself, is incredibly astounding. Through Susan's love and support you truly have been blessed with the gift of life. Keep the spirit going; I still want a ride on that Harley!
Godspeed...

Ahhhh, the wonders of modern medicine and the depth of a sister's love. You're 2 for 2. "Sammy" should be so lucky. Speaking of which, I hope you're out at Wrigley field soon! Go Bob. We're all rooting for YOU.
