Melissa's News

Welcome to the up-to-date info about how Melissa is doing on any given day. Melissa was diagnosed with Stage 3 Neuroblastoma in September 2002 at the age of 22 months. She is now 6 years old. She has completed her protocol, stem cell transplant and radiation. April 10 was the four year anniversary of her transplant. She is currently cancer free. Remember to sign in on the guestbook so we know you were here.

Thank you, Amy Brown, for leaving a message on Melissa's guestbook! Other than Great Grandma no one seemed to be checking her page, so we have been a little slow in keeping it updated.

On May 7th Melissa had her six month scans in Iowa City. She seems to have a good deal of anxiety about having these scans done. She must have some memory of her extended time in the hospital even though she claims not to remember it (although she can't seem to remember what she had for lunch today). At any rate, because of the anxiety, she has to have anesthesia which turns the whole procedure into a big ordeal. Papa and I and Jeni, Doug and Alivia were all there with her. She did pretty good considering her fears. The scans have been preliminarily read by Dr. Goldman and show no change from six months ago. She is scheduled to go back in another six months for repeat scans and an audiology test.

Jeni and Doug, with the encouragement of Melissa's kindergarten teacher, have decided to have Melissa repeat her kindergarten year. She will be with her same teacher and has been told that she can be Mrs. Fowler's "helper".
We are hoping that she also realizes that she needs to learn too. We all think that she is just a little behind the others in her class and could benefit from the extra year. My feeling is that it would be better for her to "get it" now than to be behind for the rest of the time she is in school. Part of her learning problems could come from her eyesight...she very possibly should be put into corrective lenses. The other part could be her hearing...thus the audiology test in six months.

Melissa will be participating in the Black Hawk County Relay for Life in June with Great Grandma Pudil once again. This is always so emotional for me. Unfortunately, Bob and I won't be there this year due to previous plans. I have told Jeni that she needs to take lots of pictures. Speaking of pictures...maybe Jeni can find the time to update the pictures on the website.

Melissa's last day of school is June 1st and I have agreed to watch both her and Alivia two days a week. Alivia is 18 months old and I'm sure will wear me out. I know that Melissa will be a big help to me.

Thanks for checking in with us and keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. Please remember to pray for all of the families affected by cancer.

Until next time...Grandma Nancy
